I have a 2001 jetta 5 speed. While driving yesterday, I had trouble shifting into second gear. When I took the car out of second, I would hear a slight popping sound. Shifting into the other gears was fine.
View 2 RepliesMy wife and I recently purchased a 2013 Jetta and have noticed some abnormal lag when accelerating. It's an automatic transmission and the gear shifts aren't as smooth as they should be. I have read that it is possibly related to the drive by wire system and may just be an inherent result of that system.
View 4 RepliesI made a horrible decision after my Ranger got totaled and bought a 94 Jetta... When I first got it, the car had trouble starting in the rain but eventually she would fire up. If I drove it immediately away after finally starting, it would jerk really bad when I gave it gas while shifting, until 4th gear. Once she ran for a bit it would smooth out. Nowadays if it rains the car won't start at all, just keeps turning over and I have to wait for a nice dry sunny day then it starts right up.
My mechanic worked on it recently and replaced a sensor in the distributor and the crank shaft sensor, because they showed up on the diagnostic as bad. Once his work was complete, he said he sprayed the engine with water and it started. So that was a week ago and it's raining and it won't start, the engine just turns over so it's not a starter issue. The car only has 143,000 but I am gonna get rid of it this fall but I just wanna know what this wet weather problem is.

So, I haven't been the kindest car owner to my poor little hatchback. I do my best to get regular oil changes, but other than replacing the brakes last year, I have not kept up with most of the manufacturer's suggested regularly scheduled maintenance. The car has about 130,000 miles. Manual Transmission. My clutch feels a little loose, and I have been noticing a slight grinding sound when shifting (only from neutral to first gear).
I bought a certified pre-owned VW Jetta 2012 in August of 2013 that had 4,500k miles on it.. I currently have 60,000 miles on it. (I drive a ton)... but ever since I bought it my engine makes this jolting feeling when I slow down. it comes and goes and gets worse when I am due for an oil change. I have taken it to the dealer several times about this issue and they say that german engineering...I think differently. My engine light constantly comes on and my problem is still not fixed. What the issue is??? I am clueless about cars.

Then the car drives fine as usual. As if the gears are slipping? Is this a sign that my transmission is going out? What else can cause this? What should I do?
View 2 Replies I had recently purchased a 2003 golf gti AUTOMATIC (with optional shifter) with a 1.8 turbo 4 cylinder engine. The vehicle has 139,000 miles on it. Before purchasing, I had a mechanic come out and look at the vehicle for a pre-purchase inspection, and ran the code P0303 (cylinder 3 misfire) which without test driving, told me that is what caused the shift shudder I noticed when I had test driven it a previous day. He told me the coil packs were in good condition by looking at the top of them, and told me if I replace the spark plugs, the issue should go away.
I feel it is important to mention that he had also run codes on the transmission and nothing came up. Taking it home, this morning I had replaced the spark plugs and driven it for about an hour both regularly and aggressively to test it. The problem is still there, and I was really hoping that there is a solution to this problem, because everything else on the car is beautiful, while being my dream car, I just want it to work as well as I know it can. To be more descriptive, when shifting to 3rd the whole car feels basically like it is tripping over itself before successfully shifting.
Sometimes when I go into reverse it feels like it pops into reverse and it doesn't go into reverse smoothly but sometimes it does go into reverse smoothly.
View 10 RepliesI have an automatic 2003 Volkswagen Jetta GLS with 138,000 miles on it. I bought her four years ago with 91,000 miles. Right after I got her, I noticed that she'll jump a little when when she's cold (i.e. ease on the gas for the first few miles until she drives more smoothly). Looking around the web, this seems to be fairly common and most forums say that it shouldn't be a cause for any alarm.
More recently though, she's started to lag when I accelerate right around the RPMs where she should be shifting. For example, increase to about 3000 RPM, then it feels like a second of free fall, then she'll catch up and be just fine.
I took her into a shop to get it looked at about 3 weeks ago - initial thought had been maybe an issue with the transmission fluid (did a flush back in 2014 / 110k miles). The mechanic refused to do the flush until I had the catalytic converter and downstream O2 sensor replaced. The previous owner had installed a modification to the sensor and the wires had got too close to the converter and melted.
We noticed the check engine light about a year ago and had it looked at, but the mechanic then said it wasn't a huge issue and was really only going to affect our gas mileage so we held off. Since this mechanic was fairly certain that this was causing our issue, we went ahead and had the repairs made. No luck. Haven't had a chance to take her back to the shop, but I figured I'd ask to see if we were at least on the right track.
Second issue. My wife and I share this car, and her commute is significantly further than mine. She says that four times over the past two months the car has shut itself off when it comes to a stop. Not a common occurrence given the amount of driving we do, but enough to be concerning.
I've had regular oil changes and kept up with the routine maintenance over the past four years (new spark plugs, air filters, etc.). Just got a fuel system flush with the catalytic converter repair three weeks ago. Haven't changed the battery since I bought her, but every time we get the oil changed they check it and say it's good.
Just recently, my car 6 speed has started acting up and it's got me worried. First, and most notably, when I go to shift into 4th gear, there is a slight grinding noise and its a little tough to shift into 4th. Once it is in 4th gear, though, it shifts and drives fine with no other grinding noise. A buddy of mine says it might be the synchros, but what that means or how I can fix it.
Also, it has been having a rough idle on startup for a while now. It will idle at around 1,200 RPMs for a bit when I start it up, and it will kind of backfire out the exhaust a bit, kind of like it's a misfiring coilpack or something, but will usually go away after I drive for a bit.
Driving my car right now isn't very fun when I am only worrying about what's wrong with it, so I really want to get it fixed sooner rather than later, before these develop into larger problems.
I blocked off the hpop discharge tube to test for leaks, shop air. I am plugged into the oil rail drivers side, and keep getting a slight popping sound. The first time I did this it took ten minutes to start, so I replaced the top injector seals. The second time it did this after about four minutes, so I took the oil rail to the local shop and they did the ball tube orings in the rail, now I went to put it back on and it does it almost right away.
Am I just pushing the oil out of the injectors? is this normal or should I have NO air noise period? I guess I am not sure how these injectors work, where does the oil go after it enters the top of the injector? It seems like it's coming more from the top coil area, more so perhaps than under the oil rail.
MK4 ... I have a 2002 VW Jetta 1.8T with that weirdo tranny (09A for those in the know) with the psuedo manual tiptronic VWtransmission. I don't think the tiptronic has anything to do with this, but here's my problem.3rd gear has gone missing. The car will over-rev high in 2nd and then BAM into 4th (and not, using the Tiptronic does not ameliorate, nor does using the 2nd to 3rd to 4th on the automatic shifter).
Interestingly, when doing tiptronic the car will reflect on the dash that it thinks it is in/going thru 3rd, but obviously is not. HOWEVER, When it rains, 3rd gear re-appears.I would not say things shift like a dream, but certainly not like the aforementioned nightmare. Up shift and downshift occur on time with an occasional hard shift.
My thoughts are that this is due to solenoid(s) conking out. VW says it is lifetime ATF and makes changing it next to impossible for an ape like me. Is it definitely something (solenoid or something else?)?
93000 miles 5 speed manual transmission only lets me use 2,3 and reverse gear. I took good care of that car and dont think transmission should go out that soon/
View 7 RepliesI have the above referenced car with about 65k miles on it. Today I took it for a drive, switched it to tip-tronic manual and found that the car would not shift past 3rd gear. When I switched to automatic, the transmission stayed on tip-tronic (the display indicated I was on 3rd gear). I had to fully stop the car, place it on park and only then did the transmission switch to automatic.

From beginning about 1/month will be driving ~30 mph in 3rd gear when car seems to hiccup once before returning to normal operation. Does not seem to have any repeatable attributes. Only seems to happen when about constant velocity with very slight acceleration.
Dealer says computer doesn't show anything and of course can't replicate.
I have a 2003 VW Jetta GLS 5 sp. Manual with the 2.0 Naturally aspirated 4 cyl engine. The car has approximately 147,000 miles. My MIL light has been on for some time now. I recently got my local mechanic to run diagnostics on it and he reported two error codes (411 and 420). To my understanding, 420 is due to the imminent failure of a catalytic converter, an issue which I have addressed by replacing Plugs, wires, distributor, and cat.
My real question is, I would like to know if a mysterious Vacuuming sound that comes from my car whenever I start it cold in the morning and persists for about 25 seconds, and then comes on and off intermittently, is related to the 411 code. My local mechanic told me that there is some kind of exhaust recirculation motor that may be going bad.
I love my VW and want to keep it running properly rather than give it up, so long as there is no serious problem that is impractical to fix.
Car & History:- 99 Jetta, 2.0 AEG engine, manual. 86,000 miles. Bought at 70,000 miles 3 years ago.- low oil warning once in 2013 maybe. since been using 5w-40 synthetic and used Ceratec additive once. Been doing regular oil changes.- replaced original fuel filter at 80,000 mi- gaskets have been going. Replaced thermostat and gasket. Replaced leaking oil cooler gasket. Valve cover gasket has been leaking for at least 1 year. Will replace.- Replaced timing belt, tensioner, water pump, and serpentine belt at 84,000 miles.- Flushed radiator at 84,000 miles.- All break rotors and pads at 80,000 miles- Replaced battery at 75,000 miles- Gas mileage: 26mpg
Problem:- the sound is similar to a tapping. This has been going on for a year or more.- very noticeable and loudest when cold- worse in the lower gears- diminishes once warmed up (5 minutes)- happens only under load - so 5th gear and letting off the gas pedal (coasting) it's not noticeable.- JUST TODAY: 20 degrees F, and wouldn't start on first try. Cranked for 6 seconds probably. Second time I turned the key, it started no problem.
Things of note:- By peaking behind the engine, it looks as though the oxygen sensor wire covering (pre cat) is getting a little frayed at one spot.- When I bought it I noticed new spark plug wires.
My thoughts:- Exhaust manifold gasket (to the head) is bad. So when it gets warm the bad gasket expands and stops the noise.- It's not the valve lifters because the noise goes away when warm and not really heard when gas pedal isn't engaged.- Replace the O2 sensor?

Its a 2008 Volkwagen jetta with about 60000 miles on it. My car makes a rapid fire clicking sound. I've checked the battery connections and they seem fine. When I tried to jump start, the electronics inside start flashing to the same clicking sound. The check engine light is on.
View 7 RepliesMy 03 Jetta TDI wagon, with 210,000 miles, had a grinding sound about 10% of the time when I braked, BUT ONLY AT UNDER 5 mph...that is the last couple of seconds before completely stopping. The car braked fine, but the periodic grinding worried me. Two weeks ago, my mechanic couldn't reproduce it; today, however, we did and he identified it as the ABS (and I remembered that sound from the couple of times the ABS has kicked in during winter driving. But my question was safety, and my mechanic says the car brakes fine...he has checked them all around and driven with me...and the fault is the ABS system and not the brakes themselves. Need to verify this? The car runs fine (I am the original owner, and for the first 7 or 8 years had it solely dealer maintained) and I plan a road trip this summer, but I need a little more comfort that the ABS acting up won't result in a more serious problem.
