My jeep will randomly just loose engine power the rpms just drop off completely. Sometimes the whole car goes off but not always sometimes just engine power then it wil kick back in after a few secs...... I have been looking everywhere see that it looks like a common problem but whole bunch of fixes.
View 19 Replies2004 Grand Cherokee. I was pulling a heavy trailer 1000 miles, and while coming down a mountain pass 50 miles from the end of the trip the check engine light came on. All other gauges (oil pressure, temperature, etc.) had not changed while climbing or descending and I was in low gear while descending to save the brakes. I drove the rest of the way to the destination without incident. I tried turning the Jeep off and restarting it several times to see if the check engine light would turn off and it stayed on. The next morning the light was off when I restarted it and has not come on again since. I hooked it up to a scan tool and received 2 codes: P0152 and P0132. 2 days later I noticed that it was revving high while idling and in Park. It would rev between 1500 and 2200 RPM while in Park, and at 900 RPM while in Drive. Also, while travelling at freeway speeds it seems like it's trying to downshift for no apparent reason. I hold the throttle still and have even tried cruise control and it intermittently increases engine speed, without changing ground speed. I assumed that I got the transmission too hot while climbing/descending and that the error codes listed above (related to O2 sensors) were associated with that, but now I'm wondering if something more has happened.

My mechanic said it could be exhaust manifold ,not her says lifters. My main mechanic told me to change my oil to 20/50 and put in STP oil treatment. that did not work,then told me about another oil treatments?
View 19 Replies1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 4.0 in line 6 Cyl misfires when driving. I bought this about 2 months ago (200,000 miles), and when i first got it it was acting like it was misfiring when driving above 60 mph( did get codes P0301 cyl 1 misfire, and P1391 CPS) . it started to act the same way just driving in my small town. so i ended up changing the ignition coil pack and changing spark plugs, i also replaced the CPS (camshaft position sensor). and was still acting the same way. I located a TSB that said there might be a carbon build up problem preventing valves from rotating and seating.
So I used seafoam and clean up the Top, and drove it in low gear at 4500 rpm for 15 seconds or so 6 times.. initially when doing this it was cutting out (jerking) when rpms got up there. after doing this twice with about 3 weeks in between never had a problem in town with it acting up running like it should from what i can tell..
Then i took a road trip, and a 60 mph was fine, 70 mph it was fine.. so i thought it fixed the issue and all good.. but about an hour into the drive it started acting up again.. unexpectedly cutting out for a second here and there, and usually when going up hill, and when got to destination about another 40 minutes, coming to a stop light i noticed it when stopping it was running pretty rough like it wanted to die out but never actually did. never got any more check engine lights either. I'm kinda at a loss at what the issue might be, and what i need to do to fix it as i really like the vehicle
My 99 jeep grand Cherokee 4.7 v8 4x4 will not start after 2 to 3 short trips. it starts up fine in the morning when the engine is cold but driving for a while while and I stop somewhere and shut the engine down for a few minutes it will not restart.. after I wait 10 to 15 min it start up ok.. Next when I'm driving on the highway, after 10-20 mins of driving, the engine stalls for 5-10 secs. and fires back up..I inspected all connections and the starter which were ok but I did find that the starter is soaked with oil dripping from the valve covers.. Could the oil be the problem..? Even causing the stalling out on the highway..?

After driving for about 30 minutes when at an idle/low speed the oils pressure goes low enough to set the check engine light on. The motor sound good sometime there is a little clacker, oil sending unit replaced and have installed a mechanical gauge... What else will cause this?
View 18 RepliesMy Jeep does not always start. All the dash lights come on, but when I turn the key to start the engine, they all go off. The lights stay off, and the engine will not start. The ignition won't even click... it's similar to a dead battery. When I turn the key back to its original position (when first inserting), all the gauges spike and the needles jump really high for a split second. When the door is open the gauges keep jumping (spiking). After waiting for 30 minutes, the engine will start fine like nothing was wrong (except the fluctuation in idle). It would rev high at idle sometimes, and sometimes it would idle low... so low in fact the jeep stalls. I have read about the symptoms of crank/camshaft sensors and relay, but I wanted to make sure from people that know more than I or have faced this particular problem.
View 5 RepliesI drive a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 6 cylinder engine, with about 120,000 miles on it. I used a code scanner and pulled a P0138 code-bank 1 sensor 2 O2 sensor high voltage, if I'm correct. First of all, it looks like this sensor is after the catalytic converter, right? So I think I either have a bad 02 sensor or a bad catalytic converter. What are the consequences of driving around without fixing this? Will I see any reduction in fuel economy, or any potential long-term problems elsewhere?
View 2 RepliesSo I noticed when it started getting cold that my Jeep emits this extremely high pitched whistling sound and I can't figure out what's going on. I've taken it to two mechanics and both said it was a belt that needed to be replaced so I had the belt replaced and the noise persisted. I've noticed a few things about the noise, it only happens when it is approximately 30 degrees outside or lower; only while the car is idling (when I accelerate the noise goes away immediately); It only happens after I've gone above approximately 30mph; The noise will go away after I've gone through a series of idling and accelerating; and stops immediately once I turn the car off. The Jeep is almost up to 150,000 miles.

View 1 RepliesI have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Some of the gears are intermittently "sticking". When I get up to 60 m.p.h., it's supposed to shift into the next gear, but sometimes it won't and the vehicle starts lurching as it comes up against the "shifting wall". Other times it won't downshift, so I leave a stop light in 2nd or 3rd gear. The lurching only occurs for the gear at about 60 m.p.h., unless I put the gear selector into "2", then it sometimes lurches there too. Several mechanics, including a transmission specialist at a local Jeep dealership (who charged me for 2 hours of "diagnostic time"), couldn't determine what is wrong. I did a transmission fluid flush, but that didn't work.

View 6 RepliesI have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 2001 with about 150,000 miles. About every other day my car will shut off while I'm stopped at a light, stop sign, etc. The strange thing is that the radio and lights (stuff controlled by the battery I assume) does not turn off with the engine. It seems the frequency with which this happens has stayed about the same, and I haven't been too worried until yesterday when I went to start my car and it would not start. It just kept revving and seemed like it was very close to starting.
I opened the hood and saw a lot of corrosion on the battery and luckily I had a coke in the car. After pouring some coke and wiping away the corrosion, the car started up. I have had no problems since I did this yesterday. But like I said, my car engine seems to turn off without warning so it could happen next time I drive. If these two problems could be linked, that is the corrosion on the battery could have caused both the car not starting and the engine shutting off when the car is idling. I took to a mechanic about a month ago and they couldn't find anything wrong with it and, of course, it didn't shut off when they drove it.
I have an issue with my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee v8 Laredo that has been bothering me for a little over a year now. When the temperature gets warm out (over 80) and I am traveling on the interstate up a long hill (65-70 mph, towards the end of my commute so about 30 miles in or about 30 minutes) my engine randomly begins to sound like I am in the wrong gear (RPMs do not change but engine sounds like I just changed to second) and I loose quite a bit of torque. I can maintain my speed but my engine sound horrible. After about 10 minutes of this my engine goes back to normal and I can accelerate without issue. Then randomly it goes back to being loud with low torque. To add to the the fun, if this happens at any time during the day, the next day when I start my Jeep the issue resurfaces and I have no torque for about 10 minutes (5 miles) then all is well for the rest of my commute (40 miles downhill). I had a diagnostic scan done and they found nothing wrong and I also just got both of my exhaust manifolds replaces but the issue continues.

After service and 30 miles the light came back on. They erased the memory. After 35 miles the light came back on. So far I have returned 4 times and they cannot find the problem.
View 6 RepliesI've replaced fuse underhood and fuse inside door panel. I've read about in the glove box there may be a fuse there for power windows? I removed the glove box panel to find 4 relays. Nothing is marked on these relays or panel. I read the numbers off these four relays inside the glove box to the clerk and she did not show any such thing on her computer for my vehicle. can a person pop out the main driver door switch and replace that?

I've got the feeling wire clothes hangers, duct tape, & screw clamps may be handy,;>). there appears to be a security cage around the fitting where the hose connects to the pump.
View 1 RepliesI bought my jeep about a year ago, and have had major problems with the computer system. My car wouldn't start for days on end, and then one day would start right up. I just went ahead and replaced the whole computer, wiring, ect..and it ran fine for about 4-5 months. Once and a while the check engine light would come on, but nothing happened. Then one day my car died right in the middle of the street when I was driving it. All the lights in the dash go off and it just stalls.
Sometimes it starts back up immediately,and others I have to sit for a god 15 minutes. Sometime it'll do this 5-6 times in a day, others it won't do it at all. I noticed it does it more often when it's hotter outside. I got the check engine light checked (it comes on only once in a while) and the code said it was a cylinder 6 misfire. I took it into the shop and the checked my spark plugs and said they were fine, and they couldn't find anything. Could this be related to the new computer? What I should have checked on it?
It was running on 7 cylinders and had not been tuned in probably 50,000 miles or more. I recently bought it at auction. Changed spark plugs and 1 coil for the dead cylinder. Rear cylinder on passenger side was not firing. Compression test shows 150 psi that cylinder. Fairly loud mechanical pecking from that area which was isolated with a stethoscope. I suspect a flat cam lobe or broken rocker arm.
View 5 RepliesI have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee that when you start and put in drive, it will feeling like it is stalling and sometimes backfire. It does this until I step on the gas and go fast for a couple of seconds. After that it is fine until I start again alter in the day. There were no codes when the garage checked.
