My car developed an "intermittent" accelerator whistling noise coming thru one of the speakers (I think). The harder you accelerate - the louder the whistle. When idling, it sounds like an open air whirring noise. Of course every time I bring it to the shop - it stops and when I hear it it's never convenient to get to the shop!

My regular 20 year mechanic checked transmission, replaced timing belt (at 65K; now have about 74K); all idler pulleys; checked alternator; He thinks is is the AC drive pulley on the compressor; Hyundai dealership did not know what it is; laymen have suggested is is a power steering pump, reservoir issue. Power steering fluid level is fine. Otherwise, the performance of the car is fine.

The truck starts fine and when it was idling just started this loud machine gun sound for a few seconds, then stopped, and then happened again. I turned it off, and now...? May or may not be related but the battery was dead yesterday. We jumped it quickly and drove it to let it charge. Had the battery checked and it tested good. The battery is only about 6 months old but it's been pretty hot here in southern NM so figured that was probably the cause. There was no check engine light. I did a search here and spark plugs were mentioned for a Ford, but not sure if that holds true for the Honda.
Honda Ridgeline RTL 2006
I have a 2001 Honda Odessey with 114K miles. When I step on the accelerator I hear a whistling sound. The sound sounds louder as the RPMs go up. However I don't hear the sound when I take my foot off the gas or when the RPMs are 1,000 or less. What the sound is and what I should do? I had my transmission replaced last year and my wife thinks its related to the transmission.

The noise goes away if I hit the brakes or if I hit the gas, even if I manage to maintain the speed below 20mph. What this could be?
View 1 RepliesWe hear 5 to 8 second whistling noise inside car...can't tell where it comes from as it is very faint. ALSO, we hear a longer, maybe 10 to 15 second, noise that sounds like fingernails on chalk board. Both sounds are intermittent & neither can be heard when radio etc is on. We took car into shop and had driver side front wheel bearing repaired but that DID NOT solve these TWO issues.

View 3 RepliesI have a 2004 Camry (2.4 Ltr engine) with 120k miles on it. 2 days ago a whistling/whining noise began after I had been running errands & restarted my car after being parked for about 20 minutes.
If my car has been sitting and the engine is cold (like when I get up in morning to go to work) the noise doesn't start until it gets to the 3rd line above the "C" on the temp gauge. It's a constant sound while idling or driving, except when I am accelerating. The noise seems to be originating from around the alternator, but hard to tell exactly. I have no Check Engine, battery or other indicator lights showing. Other than this mystery noise my car is running fine.
I have a 2005 Hyundai Elantra that makes a RRrrrRRRrRRR noise when turning corners - only to the right. It's not a screeching or scraping noise... more of a loud whirring or humming. One note- back left tire was removed and repaired shortly before this began - could that relate?
View 4 RepliesThere's something that sounds like an electric motor whirring for a few seconds when I open the door on my 2009 Passat Wagon after it's sat overnight. (I'm not sure if it does it other times as well, I've not really noticed). It's not really annoying, and I don't think anything is broken or malfunctioning. I'm just curious what that motor is doing.

After I drive about ten or twelve miles it goes away and diminishes into a hissing noise. Is it possible the fuel pump is failing? I have a 2005 trailblazer with 105000 miles.
View 9 RepliesI heard this noise on my mkIV GTI as well. When I unlock and open the car in the AM I hear a strange "whirring" sound. It sounds like a cell phone vibrating on a hard surface. I don't think anything is broken since it has done this on two different cars. I just want to know what it is. The sound happens as soon as I open the driver-side door.
View 4 RepliesMy wife has a 2002 Hyundai Elantra that has a rotational noise coming from the left rear wheel. We just got it back from the shop where they replaced the left front wheel bearing and rear brakes/rotors, and the right/rear wheel bearing was replaced about a year ago. It's a thumping noise that speeds up proportionally to the speed of the car. Normally I'd expect a bad tire or warped rotor, but the tires are relatively new and we didn't notice the problem before we took it to the shop last week (though it's possible we weren't hearing it over the wheel bearing noise they fixed). Is it possible we got a bad rotor, or the shop did something wrong? Or could this be something new entirely (which would be entirely typical for this car).

View 1 RepliesMy APR dealer is double checking on this. Got an APR Stage 1 tune today and am now periodically noticing a whistling/slight rattle when I punch the accelerator. Only appears to happen when I build revs quickly. Never heard anything like this before the Tune.
View 24 RepliesMy girlfriend's Elantra (mid 90s model, I think) makes an intermittent noise when on the highway. It sounds to me like it could either be from friction or some sort of wind noise, but I suspect it's the former. It only seems to happen at speeds above 50 or so. When it occurs, it is always the same pitch and loudness -- these don't seem to vary. It's rather loud, to the point where it is pretty unpleasant to drive when this is going on. It has happened both when my foot is on and off the gas pedal. When the noise happens, it can last anywhere from just a second to up to a minute or more. I haven't been able to identify anything obvious that it's correlated with -- wind direction, grade of road, etc. The only thing I do know is that it only seems to happen at highway speeds. We never hear it during city driving. So far one mechanic has confidently misdiagnosed the problem as a bad wheel bearing.
View 3 RepliesI have a strange issue that just started happening. A whirring sound comes from the vent in the back seat I believe which sounds like escaping Air. Not like the last 2 years I've owned it. At the same time I noticed that the accelerator now takes a second to engage after I hit the pedal from a stop every time. Furthermore the engine seems to be over revving, as if engine braking. I've restarted the car a few times. I've checked all the fluid levels.

Once everything warms up the steering looses power at low rpm and starts making whistling noises around the steering wheel and can also be herd outside the car somewhere.
I have just replaced the power steering pump and flushed the system. I also replaced the belt and tensioner at the same time.
Air has been bled from the system and i have checked everywhere for leaks and cant see any and I am not loosing any fluids. But I still have a lack of power and the whistle noise sounds like it is sucking air into the system somewhere..
I still get some small bubbles coming up in the reservoir even tho i have bled the system soo many times now.. What is going on?
My Tacoma makes very loud roaring and whistling noises mostly when I am idle and the brake is engaged while the clutch is depressed. Sometimes, she'll rear and balk continuously --- even more loudly --- depending on the outside temperature and her level of activity. I need to get her fixed, but live in the New York City area and am a broke graduate student terrified of getting ripped off. Do you think it's just belts? My transmission (sometimes I can feel the noise in my gear shifter)?
