My 2005 Elantra has no running lights, a/c won't come on, dash lights don't come on, and lights flicker on the dash when I have started the car and it has been on for a few minutes. Where I can look for a short or possible main fuse box in the engine? All the fuses in the interior box are fine. Headlights, wipers, and radio all work fine.

The issue being that my interior, tail and sometimes dash lights have begun to flicker while the engine is running. It's noticeably worse upon cold start, however, once the engine warms up the flickering improves a bit. Also noteworthy, is just after starting the voltmeter jumps around between 14-14.5 volts. When the car idles down it settles at 14. My left side battery is sitting at 5 years old and when just the electronics are on it hovers around 13 volts. Am I looking at a failing alternator or voltage reg? Or perhaps a loose connection or iffy fuse or ground somewhere. The car does not idle roughly and I am not hearing or smelling anything that isn't normal. I just had both vcg, valve body, and tie rod ends done. I do not have a vag yet, but I was wondering if there is any for of troubleshooting I can do before she goes back in?
View 24 RepliesAfter starting my truck the dash warning lights (oil, battery, brake, low fuel) stay lit and flicker for 20-30 seconds then go out with the exception of the battery light. It remains dimly lit for 2-3 minutes before finally going out. The battery and alternator have tested OK. I cleaned the battery ground connections andreplaced the check light relay. "I inadvertently had my foot on the brake and lights on for awhile when the car was not started. Ignition on. then when i went to start it, it made a clicking sound inside the car (not at the engine) and the lights on the dash flickered. during that time i was initially still able to turn on radio, turn on headlights, use power locks, etc so i don't think it was the battery (tried jumping it and it did not jump start). maybe it's the starter?
Starter had given no problem previously. Or is there an interlock or module that could be keeping it from cranking?
2002 Elantra GLS automatic Every once in a while when I use my turn signal, the signal will either not come on at all or flash very slowly. Also, all the interior lights (gauge cluster, windows, radio etc) that are on when I turn on the headlights will flicker when I move the turn signal selector sometimes. This comes and goes and the only way I can sometimes replicate it is when the headlight is on, I'll kinda jiggle the turn signal selector up and down and the interior lights will flicker and go out then come back on. Turning the steering wheel will sometimes cause the turn signals to flash slower or stop altogether, but again this comes and goes.
I'm guessing its something inside the steering column....maybe a loose or dirty contact? Or maybe a flasher? I know my old Camaro has a flasher that looked like a relay. Once the turn signal just came on and didn't flash and that's what I had to replace.
I have a 1981 F100, lately when I've been driving at night I notice my headlights, dash lights, and charging light will flicker at the same time, and even sometimes my headlights will flash on and off by themselves.
View 2 RepliesI have a 1997 F250 that I am fixing up. The issue is this... The dash lights now flicker off when I place the transmission in Drive position. I can slightly move the slack in the gear selector and the lights come back on. When the transmission is in Park, the dash lights work correctly. Not sure why there is some type of switch to control the dash lights buried within the steering column?

Next trip they came on when first started the car stayed on for about 9 miles once I got on the.Why they went off stayed off till I hit town about 30 miles. Stayed on till I parked the car. When I left to return home lights still on. While driving. n all dash lights came on then went real dim to no lights transmission and brakes felt like they were losing power .parked the car the next morning it started right up but break and battery light still on moved it a couple blocks to my sons house . When the lights went off on the hey. Then heater fan would kick up when lights are on heater fan runs slower.
View 1 RepliesI've got a 2009 Hyundai Accent, 28k miles on it, and was working fine until today. When I turn the key, the lights on the dash come on, but the engine doesn't turn at all. My battery seems to be fully charged. I checked my ignition fuses and everything seems fine. Is there anything else I could try? I'm still under warranty, but it's such a hassle dealing with those dealership types.

The car is not starting and all lights are flashing dimly. I get no clock or meter numbers but the light are dim blue and flashing. The horn is also going off but almost silent.
I unhooked the battery and reconnected but with no luck. This is the most I know. I have the car manual with me and a laptop.
I have a 2006 Hyundai Sonata that in winter does very strange things, almost ghostly. While driving, headlights flicker on and off, the dash abs and esc warning lights go on, and rpm's shoot up and stay there as if it downshifted by itself. I have to pull off the road and turn the car off.
Further, three different times I shut the car off and then nothing would work, including not being able to start the car. After it sits a while it then seems to reprogram itself and works properly.
I contacted Hyundai, and they only said bring it in and pay to diagnose it. But there appears to be no fix, as many have reported electrical problems for this model on the internet.
First, while driving, my radio dies, my lights start to dim, and I lose my power steering. The first local shop I took it to installed a new alternator and I drove it home. Died again while I was driving. They then replaced three alternators with same results thinking they were bad. Ended up refunding my $400 and putting my original alternator back in and I had my car towed to the Hyundai dealer.
They had car for four days while testing it after charging the battery. They could find nothing wrong with it(again, no charge). Picked it up and drove it home(with someone following me). Two day latter, dead again. What is draining my battery? Do I have a short or something?
I currently have a Australian 2001 Elantra 1.8lt manual hatchback which is a nice little car that does the family well as a second car. Lately i've been having issues with the electrical system. When I'm driving along and switch something electrical on, say the driving lights, the dash lights go out. If i indicate to turn a corner, the dash lights go out then came back on again. When i switch the rear wiper on the front wipers come on also. These are just a few of the problems. There are others which are similar.
This is only just start happening out of the blue. No work has been done to the car which could have instigated the problem.
How do I turn my dash lights COMPLETELY off? I do a lot of night driving and have learned to live with the dimmer all the way down, though my personal preference is to have it just a little dimmer. My commute makes traffic unpredictable, so I often get to work early (better than too late!), so I like to nap a little in the car until time to drag myself in to the office. When my headlights are off and I'm parked, the dash lights are WAY bright. Is there a way to turn them off, and also have the headlights off too? I need the headlights off (and the silly parking lights that stay on till you set the parking brake). So, simply stated, is there a way to turn everything all the way off while the engine (and heater) stay running?

It never bothered me before because they would come on for maybe two minutes then turn off and didn't cause any problems whatsoever.? I think because they were coming on during the day. I never realized it happening at night time. In the last month the lights came on at night time and blew out all my headlights. I replaced them three times already. I read that maybe the alternator is overcharging. I haven't checked anything yet.. I'm very mechanically inclined. Just not with electrical...
View 3 RepliesNoticed this evening that my parking lights were on in my '01 Elantra. Car has been sitting since Friday evening in my garage. The lights were not on earlier today.
The car did start right up when I turned it on. Went inside to research and an hour later the lights are off again.
Having intermittent starting on Elantra 2013 Key start model ? After over-nite car will not crank only dash lights come on and on third try (after overhead lights out) it starts ok ? I measured my battery after 6 hrs at 35 degree F , I see 12.4 vlts and about 0.09a draw in main neg cable (car not running). Brand new battery on 2/17 - had same trouble when original battery was in . dealer says all electrical DTC ok Batt / alternator charging etc.
View 8 RepliesI just bought a 2005 Elantra GT 5 speed. Nice car but the dash lights (including the radio and climate control) don't work. All fuses are good the rheostat (dimmer) is fine. Checked the continuity from the dimmer to the back of the dash instrument panel all checked OK. Light bulbs are good.
Basically it appears that I am getting power to the panel lights, yet they don't work. The radio appears to be stock with a factory plug. All other lights and electrical gadgets work fine. I can not find a schematic to check grounding.
