98 acura 1.6 ... (automatic transmission) i was at a stop sign in the rain and accelerated only to hear a clunking noise and it sounds like its spinning around and clunking and it hits something on its way around every time. clunk clunk clunk clunk. when i put it back in park i can feel what ever is spinning stop in the gear shift stick.
View 1 RepliesI had the weirdest noise in my prius this morning when I started it. This was the first really cold morning so far ( 24) and Ive had the car a few months now, new to me 2010. When I started it, it went clunk clunk clunk like something was spinning in the gear box and hitting something as it came around, possibly from generator box too. Car was in park when this happend and during the initial startup. Then it quickly got less and went away within about 20 secs. This wasn't some light sound either, pretty loud and If I would have got under the hood fast enough I could have tracked it down maybe. Also on a side note the previous day I got a weird yellow light on for no reason under heavy acceleration. It was the yellow light with 4 tires in it showing sliding. Anyway it was on for about a min then went out. Dry road no sliding of any kind. I continued to drive the car 140 miles today without an issue.
View 13 RepliesI have a '981.8 and all of my control arms were shot so I replaced them all (a MAJOR PITA i might add) and got rid of that horrible noise of clunking and clattering. But wait... whats that I hear?? a little clunking or something. I don't know, its quiet and only audible at low speeds (35-). I don't know what it would be because the control arms are quiet now. Am i missing something? Sway Bar?

View 9 RepliesI recently bought a 1998 Honda Accord with 124,000 miles. The car had one owner for 14 years. The carfax indicates the owner maintained service on the vehicle, but didn't go into detail about the work that was done. (only that the started had be replaced) When I come to a complete stop the car downshifts rough into first gear. It almost feels like it slightly jumps forward. Is this a problem I need to address and if so what is the problem? I bought it from a trusted dealership who had their mechanics give it a check and said nothing was wrong with it.
View 6 RepliesI have a 2011CRV 2 wheel drive that is making a clunking noise in the front brakes every time I take my foot off of the pedal. I took it to the dealer twice and both times they told me that there is nothing they can do about it. They said it has to do with the way the pads wear but said that even when I change them the clunk probably won't go away. I have never heard a car do this.
View 4 RepliesMy 1997 Honda, with 200,000 miles was making a clunking noise when I turned right. The mechanic replaced the rack & pinion, which stopped the clunking. However, it still makes a rhythmical softer clunking or clicking sound on right turns. It takes a while on the road for this to start, but once it starts, it happens on every single right turn. The mechanic said there is nothing wrong with the axle or the struts or anything whatsoever and it is probably just the flap hitting the fender, or something like that bec the car is so old. However, the noise is too rhythmical, too consistent for me to be confident that it is just pieces of rubber or metal randomly brushing together.
View 19 RepliesThis is what’s wrong with my 1998 Honda CR-V manual transmission. When it’s off, the gear stick works normally. However, when I start the car, the gear stick gets stuck and won’t move to change gears. It happened before a couple times and if I warmed the car up for about 10 minutes it worked normally again, and normally the next time I drove it. However, this morning, the gear shift would not work even after warming it up, except when the car was turned off.
View 5 RepliesProblem #1: So I've noticed a clunking when I go over sharp bumps or uneven road conditions (think roots under the pavement) at low speeds, such as in a parking lot. The noise is only under the front left tire well area, and the car drives smooth and great otherwise. Is it a bad joint? The closest dealership is over an hour away, so I want to make sure I'm driving there with a real reason. The MDX has about 130K, transmission is great, and new timing belt, so I'm scared it's some sort of axle/joint problem...
Problem #2: The check emissions light came on about two days ago. I have filled up since, but it hasn't gone away. There is not a smell from the exhaust, and there is no rattling. Gas mileage hasn't changed one bit either! What could it be?? The car has been restarted quite a few times, but the light comes on each time.
I have a 2006 Hyundai Sonata that is making a loud clunking noise when I first put the car in gear. I start the car, put my foot on the brake, put the car in R and I hear a creeeeaakkk, clunk! noise coming from the front, passenger side of the car. I back up out of the driveway/parking spot, put the car in D and get a slight clunk! noise out of the same area again.
At first, I thought this was maybe a ball joint or a tie rod failure, but a friend of mine and I took the front wheels off of the car this past weekend and I gotta say, everything was found to be in solid shape. Nothing loose, bushings are in good shape, boots are in fantastic shape, no loose wheels that can be moved in ways they shouldn't move. After getting the noises and clunks to happen again, my buddy's opinion is that it's my transmission having a tough go of it and that I should take it to a transmission shop. Is it a transmission thing?
2006 Sonata, 6 Cylinders, 141,000 miles (227,000 km)
Never did anything with the transmission fluid since I've owned the car. I bought it in 2010 when it had 80,000 miles (129,000 km) on it.
Is it normal to experience a distinct clunking noise when downshifting into first gear? My dealer indicates this is normal but I don't want to risk damage to the tranny if it is not normal.
View 3 RepliesName that sound!!! It's coming from the rear. Sounds like a spinning creak sound kind of rattly. Always after cold starts it's more prevalent. Happens in first and second gear mostly at 3-4k rpm... Not as noticeable when warmed up but still there. Can't figure it out....
View 7 RepliesI've got a 2000 Accord. I recently started hearing and feeling a hard knocking/clunking noise at the front-center of the car during the correct after a left turn. My trustworthy mechanic told me the subframe is rusted out on the right side and that it isn't safe to drive until the subframe is replaced (he also said he's seen several of these this last year). He suggested that the cause is that the hose leading away or down from the air conditioner is too short, and leaks directly onto the subframe. There is no recall on this problem currently. I've done some Internet research and there is some buzz about this, but not as much as I was hoping for.
View 17 RepliesOnce a week or so my car doesn't start right away after I have driven some where, such as to get coffee, the library, or shirts from the cleaners, It makes noise as if it will start, but then gives up. If I sit and wait patiently -- doing nothing for 15 to 20 minutes or so, it will start. The mechanics have checked it over several times, but can't figure out what's wrong. They suggested putting in a new engine relay a week and half ago. Since then, the problem has happened twice.
View 1 RepliesMy 1998 Acura RL just shut off while entering the garage. The engine shut off, and the battery and engine lights remained on. An attempt to restart the car without taking the key out of the ignition did not work (no sound). Taking the key out of the ignition and restarting it worked like normal.
Occasionally the car makes a loud sound right after starting, which resembled a cross between a honk and a grinding sound. I'm not sure if this is related.
I would rather the car not stop mid-drive on a busy street or the highway.
I had to really hard brake today over a very very short distance...the tires locked and the car slid for about 5 feet. Car is 2000 corolla, 4-spd auto.
As soon as I came to a full stop, I notice the engine was still "spinning" like it was in second gear...because the RPM was around 1000rpm (idle is 650). As soon as I started moving, there was a slight clunk noise (sounded like it came from CV half axle/transmission).
Although rare, This also happened a couple of times before when hard braking. It downshifts to 2.. idles around 1000rpm for a couple of seconds... and then there is a "slight" clunk noise.
Other than this, the transmission/engine has been very smooth and the car has no problems.
When I insert the key, there is current to the dashboard and the steering wheel moves into position. When I try to start the car, the dashboard is illuminated- the radio comes on etc- but the starter does not engage all. It's totally quiet. I remove the key, insert the key and try again. Sometimes the starter engages, sometimes not. When it cranks, it starts right up. The battery is good. We had the ignition switch changed out a while back, but it didn't really improve the situation.
View 2 RepliesI have a 1998 F-150 and I have a squeaking noise and I can only hear it when I am in in first gear at low speed and when I'm in reverse backing up and goes away when I press the clutch pedal. I'm thinking its either my U-Joints or Throwout bearing.
View 3 RepliesAcura 98 2.3 CL: Looking from the driver's seat, I saw white steam coming from the right hand side of the front. When I came out of the car and opened the hood (now, facing the car as if in oncoming traffic) I noticed the white steam came from the center-left side of the engine area (not the engine). There was also a fluid (slick but not oil - it smelled more like cooling fluid, or some kind of fluid) that was under the car, and it was not just a little bit - it dripped all over an area, probably the size of a small doormat, in the pattern of the car's movement as I parallel parked the car. It has been very cold the last few days, and all the sudden warmed up this week. Some more information:
The white steam and fluid only appeared/dripped three to four minutes after turning ON the de-fogger
the white steam came from the center-right (from the driver's seat vantage point) or, center-left (vantage point of someone facing the car).
the car, after being turned off, made a humming sound and then clicked off
The fluid from the car was slick but not oil (or not purely oil). It again reminded me more of a fluid, it did not smell like oil.
What is this? A blown gasket? Ruptured coolant area? Luckily the car did not do this until I parked it at home (it all happened within a period of about 120 seconds). I am concerned enough that I will not drive it and have it towed to the mechanic to fix. I love this car. (Is there anything I should ask the tower? From what I have been told there is a RIGHT way to tow the Acura!)
I've been having this problem for about 2 weeks now, and I am trying to figure it out. I know the video is only 5 seconds but at least you can hear the sound, it only happens in first gear, on take off, about 2-5 seconds after the take off, and the sound is coming from the rear axle area. I cant figure out if its diff or brake related.

I have a '98 Accord. It's got some issues and I am in the process of buying a new vehicle. But need to have a driveable car for work in the meantime. I have a torn boot on the front passenger side. Front brakes are also pretty worn down, not mention the Cat converter is shot and rusted. I'm getting a very loud, grinding noise when I turn to the left. Very loud noise. Some noise when turning to the right but not nearly as loud. My mechanic looked at the car a week ago and told me too many problems to fix the car, get a new one. which I am but it's taking some time. I'm just wondering if you think the car is likely safe enough to continue to drive until I get the new car. It's the loud grinding noise that freaks me out.
