1996 GMC sonoma, 150k, automatic. Parked it today and it wouldn't go into park. First thought was that the cable had stretched but notice that the shift lever wasn't going all the way to the park position. Feels like something is blocking it. Tried it running as well as not running. Of course I can't get my keys out or turn the ignition all the way off so I had to unhook my battery.
View 6 RepliesI have a 2000 2.2 with a bad auto trans that is removed from the truck. The engine runs good but it won't crank because of the Park/Neutral switch not getting made. I have the 2 connectors at the switch on the side of the the trans and I think it's the 6 pin connector I need to work with.
View 8 RepliesWe had the Excursion parked untill we can get the thing up to have the radiator flushed and new thermostat put in. But we had to drive it today. Had no choice. Well, To our surprise the truck wont go into park. You can shift it untill the needle goes into the "P" like always but the truck will roll and go "click, click, click" as it rolls. It wont start either (guessing due to neutral safety switch). I got under the truck, everything seems tight, I tried to put it in park from the lever on the side of the transmission but it will not move any further. Could the whole neutral safety switch be bad and not fully putting the transmission in park? I can pull it down to neutral to start it and it goes into all gears and moves just fine.

We rock it back and forth, move the wheel all around, check fuses and fluids, and sometimes after 20-90 minutes it will shift again. Also our speedometer and odometer don't work, not sure if they are related !!

Today I stopped the truck put it into park and shut it off, everything worked fine, when I went to go start it back up it started but I cant put it out of park, I called FORD and they said put the key into the on position press the break as hard as you can and put it into neutral, we tried that and it didn't work, then they asked if we could move the truck because it could be struck or something still nothing... We tried the little cap and hold it to override the solenoid but it didn't work I dunno if I am doing it wrong so Is there any other things I can try or can you walk me through the override button here's what I did with that.
Opened the cap with a flat head
pushed it in
And started tried to shift
Is that what you do or what do you need to do??
Is there any way I could check the solenoid how do i take apart the column to do that?
I have a 98 chevy truck and shortly after the mechanic put brakes on my truck, when I start it you cannot get it out of park. In fact sometimes when I can't get it out of park when I shut it off I have trouble removing the key from the ignition. I've found that when I want to start it I turn the key one notch put the truck in neutral and continue starting. At this point all works correct.

Drove fine for a few months (she's a little rough, but she does the trick).
The other day, I went out to go to work, truck would start and run, won't come out of park. Both turn signal indicators on the dash are illuminated, turn signals, flashers, radio and Climate controls do not work.
Currently driving with the emergency shifter release pulled out and zip tied open. First thought was interlock switch, but I'm not sure if that would affect everything else.
This happened once before, and I pulled all the taillights and checked all fuses, then it just seemed to work again after flipping the rheostat for the interior/dash lights. didn't work this time around.
Dash is all torn apart - where to start looking?
So I just bought a 2001 F-150. It has the 4.6 v8 it's a 4x4 automatic. Sometimes i'll go to start it in park but nothing will happen. But if I put it in neutral. It'll start right up.
View 7 RepliesSearched and can't find anything like what I hear out of my V10. After I start the truck, say 10 seconds later, I get an inconsistent clunk type noise that I can't nail down. It like a clunk that flutters if that makes any sense. Truck has 125k on it. I've had it since 113k and noise has always been there. Im concerned as I'm soon going to be towing a travel trailer.
Also this passed week I started the truck and got a ticking noise almost like a lifter noise that would come and go. I tried changing the oil and substituting one quart of MMO. Ticking started after that. So I drained that out and put in 6.5 quarts of valvoline 10w30. Truck still runs fine down the road and I just completed a 300 mile round trip with no issues. But as soon as truck goes into park that clunky flutter noise is there.
Last two weeks I have had my truck randomly not want to start while in park. If I shift to neutral it has so far started up everytime, but as of today I was at work at a security gate that sits at the bottom of a mild to moderate incline and the moment after I had put the truck in park and lift off of the brakes the truck clicks moves forward making a clicking sound life the parking prawl is not fully engaging or something.
So doing some google searching the closest answer come up with is that its a failing/out of adjustment Transmission Range Sensor. Does this sound right? I had the tranny rebuilt last year and only have put on 7,500 to 10,000 miles so its not a matter of age since it looks like the sensor was replaced at that time.
I had what I was told was the breather (on the drivers side valve cover) snap off. I was able to place a piece of tubing In it and reconnect it. I had to change the #7 cylinder spark plug wire. Got a misfire code and found the wire was loose and corroded. Replaced wire and PVC valve.
My problem is, it seems not to be idling as fast as it was before this happened. The truck stalls out now in gear but not in park. 1997 F150 4.6 ....
I have a 01 F150. I just turned it on and everything was fine it turns on lights turn on but when I tried to get out of the garage I would not shift. Windows won't go down . I am guessing it's something electrical .

My PRNDL on dash has always been off for the last 3 years park has always shown as reverse its never affected anything! I already checked the torq. bolts and that was not it. My shifter is very sloppy so is my steering wheel. I found a 00 whole steering column with wheel and shifter but its not a early 99 will it work or fix my no park. The guy didnt know if it would fit early 99 or my no park problem.
View 2 RepliesI parked my 2010 F150 XLT at work and went inside, 10 minutes later it had rolled 25 feet and into a ditch.
My first thought was that I had somehow forgotten to put it in park but when I went over to the truck, I checked and it was still in park and the display "lit up" on the "P". Also, a buddy of mine pointed out that the key won't come out unless its in park.
And so my insurance is taking car of the damage but right now I'm driving around with my "parking rock" because my parking brake doesn't work and even if it did, I want to know the root cause of what happened for peace of mind that it won't happen again.
I never use the parking break and my truck was in 2WD at the time. Luckily it was a shallow ditch and so I threw it in 4WD and backed out.....
I have a 2006 f150 fx4 4x4. I drove it home from work yesterday and it ran and drove just fine. I got up this morning to go to work and turn the key but the engine won't fire. I turns over just fine. I turn the key to release the trans to put it in neutral to see if it would start like that and the shifter is stuck. I button in the front will not go in. I tried lifting the rear tires off the ground to see if I could free the trans.

I have been reading threads that discuss potential causes such as blown fuses, bad brake switch, bad brake shift interlock actuator, and even ignition switch. All fuses are okay. Before I try to get into all the other possibilities, I have a question around what the local auto parts worker suggested. He said that there is a small plastic piece that may have slipped down interfering with gear movement. This could make sense, especially since the white manual release lever doesn't seem to be moving.
View 14 RepliesWhen I put the truck in to park, the doors do not unlock. They work fine with the button or the key fob. What do I need to do to fix this issue. Its quite annoying considering I have passengers with frequently that need to open the door a lot.
View 7 RepliesSo I drove my F150 to work as always, with no problems. I went to leave and it fired right up, but it wouldn't shift out of park. The emergency brake light was on even though the brake was not applied, the traction control light was on even though I wasn't moving, and the tire pressure warning light was on even though all tires are new and inflated properly. I removed the cables from the battery and brushed the contacts even though there was no grime on them, and when I went to start it, it just kept cranking without turning over. So I turned it to off and gave it one more shot and it fired right up, and drove like it was perfectly fine. Why this happened? I got 75k miles on it and have never had a problem...
View 6 RepliesI was driving my sons 99 f250, 7.3, today, pulled into a friends driveway, put the truck into park, turned it off and got out. 5 minutes later out of nowhere the truck jumped out of park into reverse like someone was in it stomping on the gas then the breaks then the gas, then the breaks. This truck took off in reverse with such force if there was someone behind it they would have been seriously hurt. I was parked on completely flat ground. While this was happening it sounded like it was trying to start and clicking very loud. It is an automatic.
View 3 RepliesI've noticed the brakes don't build pressure when pumped with the truck in park. I can push on the pedal and it has pressure, but it seems lower than normal. I can also push the pedal to the floor slowly, even if I pump the pedal multiple times. I don't see any obvious signs of a leak and the fluid is full. This is a 2001 v10.
