Gmc - Sierra1500 :: Road Noise Becoming Loud - Soundproofing
Nov 12, 2011
My 2000 GMC Sierra truck is in great shape at 150,000+ miles with one exception. Road noise has become so loud that my wife and I have to practically shout to carry on a conversation at speeds above 40-45 MPH. Is there an after-market fix to improve the situation?

My 2000 accent (manual) suddenly started making a LOT of road noise - like I'm driving on off-road tires. It's speed-sensitive. At 20MPH, it sounds like a trilled R, spanish style - like in "perro." Above 30, it's just a roar.
It's there even with the car in neutral and engine off. It goes away completely when turning right, such as on a freeway exit ramp. It does not go away when turning left.
CV boots are intact, no grease to be seen. It started with a set of tires that were due for replacement, so I replaced 'em and the noise hasn't changed. I've jacked it up and don't notice anything unusual when spinning the tires by hand. I even had wifey spin them while I was under the car feeling around the shafts - nothing interesting.
Also, occasionally, I hear a single "doing" sound (like metal rod striking something), from what sounds like front center of the car. Might be unrelated, but I never noticed it until the road noise started up.

After replacing the OEM tires at 25,000 I bought new tires at Discount Tire. Road noise seems louder. Would under coating work and is undercoating recommended by Hyundai?

I have a 04 v6 model , in the last couple of months when I am on the interstate at about 75-80 mph. I get a very loud vibrating noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. The dealer thinks the drive shaft has some play in it.

When I was at about 40k miles I started to have this problem. Driving above 35mph the road noise started to get louder. I first thought it was my tires but the noise went away after driving about 1k miles. Now I'm at 72k miles on different set of tires and the noise is even louder. According to a few mechanic shops, they say that there is not enough air flow going into the engine. But I'm not sure if that's the problem. It's not under warranty anymore and I can't just take it to the dealer to find out what's wrong.

Starts getting loud above 35mph, local tire shop recommends replacing the struts- says they are causing bumps in the tire because the tire is bouncing along as I drive. I did feel bumps going across the tire when I passed my hand across it.

This is a 2001 Prius - car runs great and the AC is fine. However, driving down the road, when the AC is turned on there is a noticeable scraping/ticking noise - sounds like it coming from under the hood.
With the car parked, and the ignition ON, but without the gas engine running, there is no scraping noise.

I purchased a new Outback Limited (2.5) in April of this year. I've got a service appointment coming up next week for an oil change anyway, and I noticed that the road noise from the sunroof is very loud.
I own an `09 Legacy Limited which also has a sunroof and it's not even close in terms of loudness.
When I called to make my service appointment, I was told that this is really "normal" for the sunroof, and I obviously don't think so.
My Outback has a sunroof air deflector which might be causing the problem - none of my other cars have had this option and it came with it when I purchased it. I'm considering removing it, but I want to be sure this is the cause rather than a problem with the sunroof itself.
Has driven an `11 Outback with a sunroof (with or without an air deflector), and if you have, is it noticably louder than other cars you've driven?

2008 Odyssey - sometimes produces loud whining noise. Noise will pause when I slightly touch the brake and resume when I release the brake surprisingly will pause when I hit the road bump.

My 2012 RX350 now for over a year and like it a lot.........BUT.
There's seems to be a lot "road noise" that's transmitted back into the cabin, like driving over expansion joints on blacktop or rough road surface, is this normal?
I drove a 2000 RX300 for 100,000 miles and don't remember it being this noisy. Interior noise is great and quiet.

I have a 2002 Mazda tribute, and I was driving down the road yesterday when I heard a loud pop. After, the check engine light started blinking, the lights and electricity started struggling, and I hear a loud thwack thwack thwack sound when I step on the gas. This sound gets louder and faster the more I hit the gas. When I checked under the hood, the serpentine belt looks fine, and there is no visible damages but when the car is running it sounds like I have no exhaust system it is so loud.
What could have happened and where I should start working? Family and friends have thrown out a few things but I do not want to start taking things apart if If they are not the problem.

My 2012 Elantra with 10,000 km sounded like the rear suspension was bottoming out with a loud clunk whenever I went over a bad bump or heave in the road. It was the right rear shock, which was replaced under warranty. The car handled well so it wasn't as if the damping had disappeared. About 500 km later the left rear shock had to be replaced under warranty as the loud clunking as if the suspension was bottoming out returned. I'm not sure of the shock manufacturer Hyundai is using, but they obviously had/have a quality control problem or the shocks just aren't up to the job. I live in the country and drive a lot of secondary roads, but have never had shocks go like this before. Something in the internal hydraulic value circuit is going wrong.

Just bought a new 2011 gmc sierra 1500. I am getting a vibration at 40 to 60 mph. Brought truck back to the dealership at 400 miles and they re-balanced all 4 tires. Didn't work. The second time back they had the car for a week and told me they sent the tires out to be road forced balanced that this should take care of the problem. I now have the truck back and it is vibrating even worst than before. There are 20 inch tires and rims on the truck. The truck now has 1400 miles on it. What could be going on?

I described about 3 weeks ago this loud metal sound coming from the exhaust with any revs above 4k at stop or on the road. The car sounds like a Z06 Vette with out the cats on-it is really a loud disheartening sound. The VW stealership replaced the whole exhaust but the sound is still there. Where I should direct them to look??

I recently bought a 1998 GMC Seira with over 211,000 miles on it. On the way home I noticed that the oil pressure was low when I stopped for red lights. Can this mean anything other that a bad oil pump?

I have a 2004 Ford f250 6.0. When driving it down the road i will hear a loud spinning sound, sorta like putting a playing card in your bicycle spokes. The sound can be heard until I make a complete stop where at that time the sound stops and a clunk can be felt. After that the truck sounds normal. This also only happens once between starting the truck and turning it off. I took it into the shop and they could not hear the sound, all they said is i need new ball joints.

This one should be easy but I feel the need to check. Lately the brakes on my GMC sierra pick up truck has been sticking. Not badly but ever so little. Seems to happen most when it has been parked and when i put it into drive it doesn't move. If I let it sit there for a moment the brakes release and it does just fine after that. If I hit the gas and go I get the same result. what do you think? Calipers??

My 2002 GMC Sierra, when the AC is on, occasionally makes a sound like pressure escaping from an air tank. Sometimes it doesn't do it at all, like when I take it to the dealer to get fixed, and other times it does it every 30 seconds or so. It's worse in hot weather, but I've had it do it in the winter when the Defrost (and AC) is on. It sounds like an Air Compressor that has a broken regulator and builds up too much pressure and releases the pressure. The sound only lasts for about 1/2 a second, but it's fairly loud. It's coming from under the hood, because it is very loud when driving slow with the windows down. It will do it at all speeds, and is very annoying. We're planning on taking this truck to the Grand Canyon this summer, so I'm hoping to figure it out. My wife says we should just buy a new truck.

I have an '02 GMC,Sierra,4.8 L 5-speed,once upon a time this truck would easily travel over 500 miles on a full tank of fuel, for the first 10 years ,on a road trip ( which I do every summer), approx.,210 miles one way, this truck would still have just over 1/2 tank of fuel, as of the summer of 2012, the thing used up to 3/4's of a tank.
Then the service engine light came on, I replaced all sensors, O2's new injectors, motorvac, new plugs ,wires etc,( All done by a certified ASE mechanic). After his work the truck got back up to the aforementioned "good mileage", and the Service engine light went out...for awhile, now it is on again, as mentioned earlier, the truck has basically had a complete tune-up. So whats up with this ?? I sure hope I don't need to R/R the engine itself....

I recently had my ignition cylinder replaced at the dealer. Immediately after this repair, I noticed that several lights were out - lower left radio, lower left dashboard, lower left steering wheel control, some light controls, and drivers side daytime running light. I brought it back to the dealer, and they told me that it was a coincidence that all these bulbs burned out at once (and all on the lower left side) and is not related to their repair. I'm not convinced.

I have a 2006 GMC 1500 4x4 just under 100,000 miles on a GM crate engine, 266,000 on truck, runs great no loss of power, no drop in MPG. sill get 17-18 around town on 87. If I put 90-91 gas in when pulling a load I get 18 all day long. So were is the problem? I am getting spark knock. I have tried diffrent gas, just put in plugs and wires. Old plugs looked good. No Cel on, No codes. It happens when I am flat roads and going up hills. I did get to go away for 1 tank when I switched gas stations, but now all brands of gas do it. This has been going for 3 mo's. One more thing it all started after I made a 800 mile round trip puling a trailer ( just under 5000 lbs on trailer 2 axle enclosed). On that trip as always do I used 90-91 gas.
