I have a 2002 GMC Envoy that has developed a shrill whistle. It starts after the car hits about 20 mph, stops when braking or at a standstill, and sometimes doesn't start right away if the car is cold. My mechanic has checked things out and can't find anything. He pinpointed the sound to the front right side, but replaced the wheel bearing and that didn't fix the problem.
View 4 RepliesI have always taken car to dealership for service/repairs. Recently left car at dealer service for just the above issue. They said they could not duplicate the sound. Perhaps they didn't drive long enough..it hadn't 'warmed up'? Everyone who rides with me hears it. It is very very annoying. What could this be?
View 6 RepliesI've recently purchased an 02 Envoy from an auction. There are a couple of issues. The main one started last night. While at the store I put the truck in park and turn off the ignition. The ignition will not go into the lock position. I messed with the key and go it to turn off. Then started the truck to leave and couldn't put the truck in gear. I messed with the shifter and was able to put into gear.
At that point the gear shifter would move from park to reverse without me pushing the break pedal. I drove home and could not turn the key all of the way off again. Moved gear selector from 1st to Park a few times and then was able to remove the key. I restarted the truck and could not move the gear selector again; however I was able to remove the key easily.
I am leaning towards replacing the "Neutral Safety Switch" on the tranny but with my symptoms, I've seen brake light switch, ignition, and solenoid at gear shift selection.
Back up lights do not work either. Since I purchased the truck, I've replaced,
-Battery
-Ignition Coil
Upon noticing some squeaking noise when my car hits particularly rough pavement I asked my mechanic to take a look. He informed me that my front lower control arm bushings have shifted, the right one some, and the left just a hair. The car was involved in an accident some years back and about two years ago I ran it into a curb bad enough to shift my steering wheel about 10-15 degrees out of position.
According to the mechanic, it its not a bad problem currently, drivability is not at all affected, but it could be a potential issue in the future. However, because I just identified the problem, I don't know if it is recent or has been there all along for the last 5 years (just inherited the car from my dad a few months ago). For the moment, its wait and see if it gets any worse.
So I say, OK, whats it take to correct it, just for future reference. This is when I find out that the 02 Camry, for some insane reason, has control arm bushings that are not replaceable without replacing the entire control arm. And if that wasn't bad enough, the control arms cannot be removed without lifting or removing the engine AND transmission!?
Just purchased an EX. There is a whistle that starts about 65 mph. Sounds to be coming from the front but can't tell exactly where???
View 14 RepliesMy 2002 F250 7.3 randomly dies while driving and seems to only be when I hit a bump no matter the size. I have checked the valve cover harness connector outside of the valve covers and they look fine. I checked the ECM connection took it off and reconnected it.
Changed the CPS censor twice, checked the ICP sensor, checked continuity of all the glow plugs through the valve cover harness. Checked the fuel pump, checked all related fuses, changed the fuel filter, checked glow plug relay, batteries hold good voltage and were recently upgraded to bigger batteries.
Engine runs just a little rough but not enough to be of concern. Air filter is clean and oil level is perfect. What could possible be causing my truck to randomly die when it hits a bump and not start back right away??? This truck is new to me and its the first diesel engine I have ever owned.
I was noticing today when i started my car that it was making a whistle noise. So naturally i popped the hood to find the source of the noise. It is from this hose that connects to my header it has this crack in it and it is sucking air in.

Just the other day noticed a whistle noise or a whining noise while I'm accelerating. Sounds like its coming from from the front passenger side,not sure.

Belt looked good, idler pulley felt loose, changed idler, no luck. no drips at water pump, alternator seems fine. Could this be as sneaky as a fan clutch? If it could, how can I test it?
View 6 RepliesI have a 2002 f-250 7.3 diesel, i straight piped it but only by cutting muffler off and welding a piece of pipe in its place, it is pretty loud but id like to hear the turbo more like more of a whistle, it has a pretty good whistle once i get past 1500 rpm, is there a slightly bigger turbo i could put on without putting too much strain on the 180,000 mile engine?
View 6 RepliesMy Dad has a 1995 Lincoln Towncar that has developed a continuous shrill whistling sound inside the car when you start and drive. No amount of fiddling with any of the controls makes it go away...but ..it does stop on it's own, sometimes.
We have heard all kinds of theories about what it might be; including seat belt warning, turn signal flasher, short in the steering column, vacuum leak, etc. But short of committing to an expensive hourly rate to find the gremlin, we have been unable to solve the problem.
Recently I have been having a strong gas smell coming from my 1997 F150 Supercab 4.6L 2wd. It is not happening all of the time. I have also been hearing what sounds like a vacuum line leak. A loud shrill which varies with the engine rpm. This also does not happen all of the time.
View 1 RepliesYesterday, I noticed a rattling sound coming from the entire car a 2002 subaru outback 2.5l 4 cylander (it seems a bit louder on the passenger side but it literally can be heard throughout the car). I was on the expressway and got off and stopped at a red light when the check engine light came on and started to flash and the rpm's dropped rapidly and the needle began to bounce up and down. I pulled into a gas station to check it out more and popped the hood to find that when the car is rattling it is also shaking and rocking the engine of the car from side to side slightly.
When I'm idling the rpm's drop and the car feels like it is going to stall out. Then, as I accelerate, the rpm's barely go above 2000 and jump up quickly between 3000 & 4000. It sounds like a metal on metal rattle with a very slight high pitched whistle and you can hear a fan kick on and the engine try to keep the rpm's up every couple of seconds when the car is stopped. I had the timing belts replaced 2 years ago and it sounds very similar to how it did when they needed to be changed, however, the engine never felt like it was going to stall until yesterday.
When idling the noise gets louder and when accelerating it can still be heard but barely. Also, the rattling has caused the entire car to vibrate all of the time. I noticed yesterday that the oil was low and topped it off, but I don't think that would cause such a hige issue so quickly. When I go uphill, i have a good amount of power but every 30 second or so the car shifts and the rpm's jump lurching the car forward because of the surge of power. Also, when I hit the brakes, my rpm's jump slightly to about halfway above the 1 but the engine does not accelerate.
Tranny loses all gears forward and reverse intermittently. I turn ignition off and on a couple times and everything is fine. It might be electrical because when I take key out of ignition and get out of car my power windows and radio are still working.

But then in the afternoon after sitting in the sun I went to start it an when I turned the key all that happened was the check engine light came on and nothing else. Would not turn over nothing, not a sound! That was about 4pm..... Now I got home and at 10pm went out to check it and it started right up.
View 7 RepliesI have a 2005 GMC Envoy with four wheel drive. When at a stoplight, with my foot on the brakes, occasionally it will feel like I have been hit from behind. A sharp clunk but since I am on the brakes the car does not move forward but I feel that if I were not on the brakes it would move forward. One dealer shop suggested that it was a problem with the "yoke slip joint" in the drive shaft. Another dealer shop thought it might be something else.

Whether I put little in my tank or fill it up, 80% of the time when I turn the car on after putting gas in it the dash says "low oil pressure stop engine" for about 30 seconds. That's the only time it ever says it and the pressure gage goes up to 40, where it's always at. I check the oil regularly, there's a slow leak between the motor and tranny but I keep it full, it's never low. Can this cause major damage to the engine?
View 12 RepliesMechanics are stumped. 3 months ago, during a 4WD commute through the snow, I started noticing what at the time smelled like bus exhaust coming into the cabin. My SES lights comes on for 2-3 days, then off for 2-3 days. Codes say MAP sensor and low coolant coolant.level. When the SUV warms up fully, you can smell the odor strongly under the hood, inside the cabin while sitting at a stop light, and inside with the Heat or AC on. Mechanics had the car for days, replacing cam and Map sensors. There is no evidence of exhaust leaks or coolant on the engine. Level of coolant has been dropping slowly in the reservoir.
