Ford - Taurus :: 2000 - Sputtering After Startup - Cause?
Sep 20, 2011
Recently my car has been sputtering a bit after I start it. It starts fine, but it sputters like it is going to run out of gas, but it's always at least 1/2 full.
To get it to stop I have had to pull over, turn it off, and restart it after a few minutes of running, then I haven't noticed anything again until the next morning when I start it again.
One time it turned off by itself when I stopped it and put it in park.
If at all possible we'd like to repair it ourselves, but we are not sure what could be wrong.
Our thoughts are: clogging/clogged fuel filter or spark plug issues. What could be causing this sputtering?
Again, it is not constant, as after restarting I continue to drive almost 60 miles to work, then back home in the evening with no issues yet. It has stopped once, but never while moving.

I have a '99 Ford Taurus that was hesitating and sputtering while driving. I had the fuel pump replaced about a week ago thinking my problem was solved. Lo and behold, while driving about 50mph and trying to pass vehicles, my car started doing the same thing. It acts as though I have bad fuel or there is dirt somewhere that is entering my gas line.

For the past day, when I turn on my 2008 Ford Taurus X, i hear a repetitive flapping sound for about 15 seconds. It seems to be coming from the center of the dashboard. It sounds like " bap bap bap bap..." My son said it sounds like a metronome. Is this bad??

We have a 2010 Ford Taurus. In good repair, regular maintenance has been done, 80k miles, mostly HWY.
Friday when I started the vehicle there was a sound that lasted for about 10-15 seconds that was like "Tack tack tack tack tack tack tack" coming from the passenger side dash seemingly behind the glove box. Perfect rhythm.
No dash warnings or alarms. Everything seems to be functioning fine. I've started the car 4 times since then with the exact same behavior. Only occurs when I first start the car.
The AC seems to be working well (thought maybe it was something related to that as it's just gotten warm here).
The local Ford Dealership is an option however they are an hour away so if this is something I might be able to diagnose and fix myself, I'd prefer to. My searches thus far indicate that it could be a problem with a blend door actuator but I've not seen much info on what investigating/replacing that might encompass.

My 2010 LE has been having this issue for a little while now. Whenever I start up the car when the engine is still warm, (an hour or two after initially driving it), the engine will sputter for around 3-4 seconds, but will always start up. On cold starts, like every morning, the car will start normally. There are no noticeable rpm problems while driving either.

I'm having some serious trouble with a 2000 4Runner with the 5FVZFE V-6 with 165,000mi. The engine is bogging down/ sputtering and dying on startup, won't drive over apx. 20-30mph, doesn't seem to want to shift up or down, and won't rev past 3000rpms, stopped or driving. I've been a mechanic for awhile and never seen this issue before. But here's the kicker... I'm in bfe Afghanistan, have almost no access to parts (if I do it takes quite awhile to get them and even the easy stuff is hard to find), no diagnostic comp, and only the tools in my toolbox, air compressor, and solvent tank.

Immediately after putting new tires on my '02 Taurus SES, steering is really hard at the pullout, or turning at slow speed just after startup. After several seconds, steering is back to normal. I did have the steering pump flushed out with new fluid several months ago, and fluid is up to level now.

F150 has the 5.4L w/ the auto. 59K on the ticker. This "spuddering" type problem only happens when in overdrive. Mostly highway and when starting to pull up small hills. The symptom is a slight jerking and "spuddering" feeling. It goes away with more rpm's and some acceleration. I've tried injector cleaners and 91 octane just for grins, nothing works. Is this a possible COP issue?

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger, small v-6, automatic, no AC, windows, door locks, this has a heater and radio. This truck runs fine until I try to climb up the mountains (Colorado) and at app. fifty mph the engine starts sputtering and losing power. More than just an engine ping. When I run on flat ground while pulling a fifteen hundred pound load it runs fine with no sputtering or loss of power. Mechanics here are stumped.

My 2000 Ranger standard 4.0 4x4, started spitting and sputtering the other morning just when i was gone up hills then it would quit doing it. The other evening it got to where it don't idle, missing very bad, and wouldn't even pull itself up a slight grade, and the wife said there was flames and sparks coming out the exhaust. Now it wont even try to start, it just turns over. I put a different coil pack, wires, and plugs, and still nothing. I pulled the gas line off the frame fuel filter and its shooting gas out, and I got gas to the check port on top of the engine.

I have a 2000 Explorer with the 4.0 OHV. 104,000 miles. Has always ran great. The last few days it has had a sputtering almost knocking sound that gets worse when put into gear or the ac turned on. I changed the oil and checked all fluids. Looks good. Only thing I had done was fill it up this past monday after a storm. My mother in law told me afterwards that the particular station always has complaints after rain and has leaks in their tanks. I'm assuming I may have gotten water into the system. Would this cause these problems? And is it ok to drive it out or should it be flushed. I've added a can of Iso Heat and am now down to 1/4 tank. I had planned on getting a little lower on fuel and filling up with Premium. I've never had a problem like this before so not really sure the best way to track the problem or fix it. Or it may be something else all together.

2000 Ford Taurus left outside mirror with electrical adjustment has come loose. How does one get it tight? How much should this cost for parts? How difficult is the work? What tools does one need? What would be a reliable $$ wag be to have a dealer/independent shop do the work?

I am wondering why my 2000 Ford Taurus experiences gas line freeze on a handful of occasions each winter, when our other vehicles never have this problem during our winters. It doesn't get extremely cold here, I live 50 mi south of Indianapolis, IN. Last winter I had this problem on a few occasions, and basically just waited for the temp to warm up above freezing, and the car started. Now it has happened again this year, with temps down in the high teens/low 20's. Car is parked under a carport at night - my battery is cranking strong, my fuel pump is doing it's humming noise when the key is turned 'on', tank was filled a day or two before this happened, and our other vehicles are starting just fine. We do use Heet in our gas tanks during the winter, but I hadn't gotten around to adding any to my tank before this incident. I have lived in northern Wisconsin and the Chicago area, and never had this happen to my old beaters back in those days....what is the big problem with the Taurus?

2000 Ls V6, 145,000 miles, Ok the other morning I start up, and sitting waitng for it to idle down, when it does it starts to sputter like its gonna die, so I hit the gas kinda rev it up a bit, and it's fine, it drives fine with no problems, however I was sitting in it today and reved it up at around 3,000 rpms it starts to sputter, but I punched it on the way home and no problems, put it back in park and reved it up and it did it again around 3,000 rpms.

I have a 2000 Ford Taurus SES that jerks heavily after being driven for about 5 mins. She starts right up, idles well, runs well in the beginning but then suddenly will start jerking when pressing on the accelerator. I'll pull to the side, put the car on neutral and rev the engine a little to see if any hesitation - NONE. Then once I put it in drive again and step on the gas, it feels like the tranny or something is jerking and about to fall off. If I park it and turn the car off for a while, then return to it, start it and drive it, it'll run fine for a few minutes and then the problem will start again.

2000 Ford Taurus w/ 233,000 miles. Yep, it's been good to me, and I've been good to it! However, the romance may be over now. There is a not so pleasing sound of rocks in a rock tumbler when the car is in idle, or in drive waiting at stop lights. Doesn't matter if I just started the vehicle or it's been running awhile. Noise is definitely coming from the engine and not at the rear of the vehicle (just had the muffler replaced - noise was present before and after). I'm also burning through oil. No tell tale puddles under the car though.

So, I'm minding my own business pulling out of Starbucks with my gingerbread latte, making a nice and easy right turn when I hear "clunk" ("pop" maybe??). I hear a scraping/whirring sound on deceleration only (once I get past say 30-40 miles per hour). NOT brake related at all, occurs only when I let up on the accelerator. My baby is a 2000 Ford Taurus with 238,000 (yep, you read that right). I'm thinking transmission (and, I really want to be wrong). I've had the transmission flushed every 30,000 miles and serviced at 150,000 per Ford's maintenance schedule. I have taken very good care of my vehicle, but I do put a lot of miles on it every day as I drive 120 miles round trip to work 5 days a week.

My 2000 ford Taurus which has 120,543 miles needs an outer tie rod end. I went to sts for an oil change and asked them about an alignment after I did the tie rod and they told me I need to change my struts. If I only change the front struts could I get an alignment or am I going to need to change the rear also? Also, i know I have to get new tires in the front because they are getting bad from the alignment being off so I would have to get tires also.
