Ford - Ranger :: 1997 - Clanking Noise In Engine Area
Apr 23, 2011
Bought truck new in 1997, 4 cylinder, 5 speed, manual transmission, 127K miles. In January developed a clanking noise in the engine area. Do not have a tach but hear the sound when engine is cold. Raise rpm up to whatever is equivalent to 20 mph in second gear. Anything much above or below this speed, sound goes away. Hear it the loudest when I am under the vehicle. Sounds like marbles in the exhaust system. My mechanic said it is not in the exhaust but in the front engine area. Said this vehicle is know to have this problem and there is no inexpensive fix. Sound goes away when engine runs for about 15 minutes.

My dad has a 2010 prius IV. He told me the other day when he backed out of the driveway and put it in drive he experienced a clanking noise coming from the engine. He said it sounded like metal rattling around. It lasted about 30 sec. then went away. What this may be?? It hasn't happened since.

My 2.4L engine is making a clanking noise while running. When I checked the oil level today, it was low by about 1.5 quarts. There's no check engine light.
Car has 74K miles now. I purchased the car two years ago with 35K miles. I have always performed regular maintenance myself. The car had its oil control valve replaced at 55K miles.

2002 Ranger XLT, Super Cab, 4X4, 4.0L SOHC V-6, 5-speed manual transmission. Noticed burnt oil smell. Checking under truck revealed oil drips on garage floor from rear area of engine. Traced to rear corner of left valve cover, but can't see enough of the rear of the engine top-end to say for sure where it may be coming from.
Before I put the truck in the shop for repair, where the oil may potentially be coming from on this particular engine? (I checked; the valve cover fasteners are secure) Any "chronic" oil leak problems with this model engine, or anything?

I had a slight noise from the waterpump area for a while, was waiting for it to fail but instead it was the clutched fan bearings. How difficult is it to repair? And could there be a recall on this, the ranger has 51,00 miles and its all easy miles. 2004 ranger 2.3 clutched fan bearing failure ...

My 1988 XLT 4x4 2.9L truck can't make up it's mind. Oil light comes on when ever it wants. I replaced it with a new one to make sure it wasn't bad. My lifters start clanking then they'll stop making noise when ever . Oil light goes out.Runs great. I let it Idle and once warm oil light pops on again. Rev it up light goes out then comes back on at higher rpm. Let Idle lifters clank again...and so on. seems erratic. Weak oil pump???? slop plugging pick up screen??? I'm running 20w50 oil is has 188,000. It ran today for 1/2 hour no oil light no noise then Here we go again..clanking valves ,oil light on...

So I just installed a fresh 4.6 long-block in my '98 4x4 xlt and I have a noise coming from the manifold area. Thought it was possibly valves or timing chain. Took it to dealer and they diagnosed it as the Intake Manifold Runner Control. Never heard of it!!! Problem is, I can't find that part for this motor. Is it inside the intake? Do I have to replace the whole intake? Dealer didn't tell me, once I said I would do the work myself.

2000 f150 supercab 4x4 offroad. Sometimes in a very strong wind, I get a lot of air noise around the doors which is up in the window area. I occasionally get it if I haven't got the back half door shut tight.
Just wondering if there is a way to puff up those door seals without replacing them? Inject them with something or use a hair dryer to heat them?

I have a 99 F150 4x4 4.6L automatic trans. The truck has 260,000 miles on it. Saturday, while going down the interstate, this chirping noise started up from the rear. When I got home I jacked the rear up and spun the wheels while listening. There is a chirping noise that, as best as I can tell is coming from around the front of the driveshaft around the u-joint area. I've never known of a u-joint to make this type of noise before. There is no vibration or anything, just the noise. The frequency of the noise increases and decreases as I speed up and slow down. I don't think it's coming from the transmission, but it's hard to tell, as everything echoes. I couldn't imaging the driveshaft itself making this noise, but I guess it's possible.

I've got sort of a howl going on, was thinking rear end, but when i jacked up the wheels and spun the driveshaft the noise seemed to come from the transfer case area. I haven't had a chance to check the fluid yet, could it be a bearing in the t-case? Its only when i'm on the gas if i let off its gone. 2001 f150 super crew 4x4

2000, F-150, 35K +original miles. 4.6L V8
Some weeks ago a noise started that sounded like fan blades striking against heavy plastic fan guard. At first I thought it was coming from the transmission/Transfer case area but after a few weeks of listening to I now believe it's coming from behind the dash area, however, I can't find any reason for it be from there.
The noise usually starts around 45 MPH
I checked the heater fan and it appears to be Okay. I don't know of any other fans in that area.

Have a noise coming from the serpentine area. Sometimes it's a bit of a chirping, other times it's almost like a solid grind.
I pulled the belt off and the idler pulley had a bit of play so I replaced that. The tensioner pulley felt fine. I'm suspecting the fan clutch, as the noise only appears after the clutch has disengaged the fan (although it could be this is just masking the other noise because I've got a heavy duty / loud fan clutch setup).
How can I be sure that the fan clutch is the culprit before replacing it?

Got a 1999 ford f150 2 wheel drive. I have replaced both upper and lower control arms with ball joints on both sides. New shocks, new stablelizer links, new inner and outer tie rod ends. Also, a new steering gear and i still have popping noise coming from both sides around the wheel area when i enter or leave out of drive ways, turning, or running in a hole. Doesn't do in going straight. I don't know what else to do. Driving me insane. I keep spending money on this truck and still where i first started.

I have a 97 250 LD 5.4 that suddenly has a grinding noise coming from the area where the transmission and motor meet. I took the inspection plate off the transmission and can look up inside there and see everything moving. I use a screw driver and if I flex the plate that mounts between the transmission and the motor I am able to get the noise to quiet down until I release the screwdriver and then the plate flexes back and scrapes making the noise again.
I can not see where the plate is grinding when I look up inside there. I can't figure out how to fix this.... Why it would just start doing this on its own as none of the bolts on the housing have been removed except for the two bolts that hold the starter on. (Changed it a couple of weeks ago). Thought about loosening the bolts on the tranny housing but I'm afraid that it would open me up to further problems???

So aside from many different fluid leaks, and the sound of rattling coming from my engine which I have been told is my gas pinging. I am hearing what I can only describe as the sound of a small explosion coming from under the hood. Its not as loud as a backfire, but it definitely sounds like something is combusting where it shouldn't be. its a '93 XLT V6. What could it be? how screwed am I?

I have a 2014 Explorer Sport and I'm having problems with cranking. On really hot days when its 90+ degrees, my explorer will make a clacking noise when cranking. When its 100 degrees, the first try on cranking will give the same noise, turn over and not start. On the second try, it will start. The odd thing is, after it does crank, it will crank normally when I try it again. After waiting a few hours, the same issue will occur again. I'm thinking this may be a starter issue. I will take a video and post later.

I used my truck in 4x to pull a couple of little stumps. Nothing major, just put it in 4l more or less to keep from tearing up the yard. Noticed a couple of weird things today. For a minute had a good pull to the right. Just felt "weIrd" in front end. For lack of a better explanation. Jacked up and checked for play, nothing unusual. Took off the tire and checked other stuff and couldn't find anything. Lubed up joints etc and drove later. I'm hearing a slight " clanking" noise in front. I know it's got something to do with the 4wd but I don't know where to start.

I have a 1997 4.0L Ranger with an oil leak. It is near the front of the engine, I don't really see where it is. I was wondering if there is any common oil leaks near that general area?

I have a 97 ranger 4 cyl that's been making a whistle noise the last few weeks. The sound is literally like a whistle and the noise level varies but its never obnoxious or loud. The sound does not happen when truck is idle, seems to happen mostly when I first accelerate and slow down although sometimes it does happen when I am going 20-30. it doesn't happen all the time but lately its happening more. What this could be? The truck idles and runs great.
