Ford - Mustang :: 2002 - Transmission Overheated / OD Off Light Flashing
Jan 31, 2014
My 2002 mustang with 97k miles just had what has been described to me as a severely overheated transmission. The O/D OFF light was flashing and I noticed some faint smoke and a terrible odor from the burning transmission fluid. I was told by a nearby transmission specialist that it would cost $2500 to rebuild the transmission and put in an external cooling device (which he said was necessary).

I have a '02 F350 just over 114k miles, tow light is flashing and just had P1876 code come up. 4h and 4l engage and disengage with out a problem. Code reads 2wd solenoid circuit failure. Where is this solenoid is located?

Wife's truck- 2002 v8 limited explorer with 116k... Yesterday she calls and says the od light is flashing and the message center says check transmission. She drove it home then when I got home the light was off and all seemed ok. I am taking it to have the codes read and hoping that my mechanics scanner picks up a code.

2002 7.3 4R100 ... The truck started flashing the O/D light pulling a 9K lb trailer on the highway.
The transmission codes read were P0705 (Range Selector) and P0873 (bad 3-4 shift - RPMs did not drop).
On the highway, the TCC seemed to lock up fine in 4th (OD button was set to leave O/D ON). When the truck would downshift (not often) then it would sometimes would rev high when it downshifted. It was like 3rd was slipping or it was downshifting into 2nd instead of 3rd. I think it was doing a 4-2 downshift but not 100% sure.
What confuses me is that if it is doing a 4-2 downshift then it would have to change state of both valve body solenoids. Is it possible that it was doing a 4-3 shift but solenoid was sort of sticking? Trans fluid looks fine.
I have read other posts where people had same problem (titled 3rd gear slipping), but they never seemed to resolve the problem in the thread. How likely is it that the solenoid is the problem? It seems to drive fine in 3rd when the O/D OFF button is pressed and O/D is not allowed.

I have a 1998 expedition 4.6 4x4 check engine light on od light flashing sometimes checked it and got p1747 code i was told epc solenoid or short on trans wiring. I already dropped the trans pan, looking for a step by step easy way to diagnose and find the short or if i need to replace any of the solenoids. I have voltmeter and taste light....

this morning my 02 decided to turn the ABS light on, and start bouncing the speedometer. plus, the OD light is flashing when stopped with foot on the brakes, but the trans is shifting fine.
nothing changed on the truck except almost 3 inches of rain fell last night.
will AE tell me if the VSS is going bad?

I drove 10 hours in my 02 Ford Taurus perfectly fine then a day later New Year's Day car didn't start for some reason I took it to the shop turns out I needed a new alternator, battery, new belt, made sure all wiring was good, and topped off all fluids (which were very low) ...... After that everything was fine for awhile then in the evening I drove bout 36-40 mins turns out my fan wasn't on the whole drive and car started smoking bad (white smoke) when I got to a parking garage popped the hood water was trying to burst out of its compartment in a panic.
I opened the dam thing shit spewed everywhere and burned my arm we let the car cool down started it again added water to the tank where it was lost everything seemed ok then not too long later I was getting off the highways car starts smoking yet again but this time the engine literally stop working I pull over looked under the hood white smoke is now coming from engine and when I try to restart it it's starts and died couple seconds later and from the looks of it I was leaking some fluid as I was getting off the highway and still was leaking something when I pulled over. I just got smacked for the alternator earlier in the day and now all this happens and I'm so confused ...

with a flashing o/d light.
I have a 02 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. V6 4.0L with a 5R55E transmission. About 210,000 miles.
A few weeks ago after a trip i discovered i had a coolant leak. It took me a couple of days to figure out that it was the lower thermostat housing. Fixed that and I thought my troubles were over. WRONG.
A few days later the O/D light started flashing and I got to enjoy the wonderful "Limp Mode". The problem only showed up when I had to slow down for a stop. As soon as I started to go again and it went to shift into second (or overdrive 1st) the o/d would start flashing and hello "limp mode".
I got on the web and started reading. I ended up replacing the speed sensor (in the rear differential), the crankshaft sensor, and readjusted the bands with no luck. I would have to shut the truck off at every stop sign/red light just to avoid "limp mode".
Last week I went to a friends shop to have them change the oil and we started talking about the problem. I got him to flush the transmission fluid and look at the codes.
He got the following codes: P0731, P0732, P0733, and P0734. Incorrect gear ration 1 - 4. He cleared them and nothing popped back up.
That cleared up most of the problems.
Same scenario as before but only after I reach 40-50 mph. If I'm just in city traffic it doesn't pop up. And if I'm driving around with no stop signs/red lights it won't reappear. But if i get up to 40-50 mph and have to complete stop, as soon as I take off again and it shifts into that second gear (or sometimes 3rd gear) it will go into "limp mode".

The below is for a 175k mile '02 Mercury Mountaineer 4.0L with 5R55W trannie that has previously had somewhat of a whining sound in 2nd gear (I thot it was rear differential). Note: I just changed the fluid & filter myself last week due to its shifting being a little harsh. Then, this past Sunday, the O/D light started flashing after about 5 min of driving (but the CEL is NOT on). It also did so the next two times I drove it after that.

I have a 2003 ford ranger, it's on it 3 automatic transmission. Each transmission has had the same problem. The OVER DRIVE OFF light starts to flash, and when it shifts from 1st gear into second it shifts really hard, and shifts hard from 2nd to 3rd. When you turn the truck off and start it back up the OVER DRIVE OFF light does not come on. The second transmission lasted almost 30,000 miles. The 3rd transmission only made it 24 miles before the light started to flash. The 2 replacement transmissions have been Ford crate transmissions, installed by a Ford dealer. I have looked around on the Internet and no one has a answer for how to fix it, other then it's time for a new transmission. I think it's a computer issue, but the Ford transmission guy says its not ...

2000 Excursion 7.3 unk transmission
Quick run down on the situation. It has been terribly hot here bumping 105 degrees. I was told by a man he could see fluid leaking and it was trans fluid. I checked it and filled it up and got it to the shop.
Next day they said it was not leaking and that it probably overheated. They recommended an after market trans cooler. They put it in and off I went. 60 miles later I got fluid all over the rear of the truck. I filled it up again and got it home. Shop says I need a new trans.

I replaced my wheel bearings and wheels roughly 6 months ago, right after I noticed my wheels gittered when turning at low speeds. I assumed this was a power steering issue or the new tires. I have now learned from this forum that it is most likely stuck in 4x4 HIGH but has no indications on the dash. Just yesterday though the actual 4x4 High light started flashing in different variations. I get 6 flashes one time, then 8 flashes 2 minutes later on the dash and so on back and forth. When I stop I can put the truck in 4x4 high and the light stays on, same with 4x4 low. Then when I go back to 4x4 auto they go off but I still feel gittering while turning at low speeds. What would cause this? I see a lot of people replacing the Xfer case control module but no one seems to have the same problem.

working on a 2000 F-150 (5.4L & 4R70W). the truck was towed to me with the complaint it would not go forward.
I found 6 transmission trouble codes set. I cleared the codes and was able to drive the truck for about 30 miles. It shifted perfectly and had all 4 forward gears, codes did not come back. I parked the truck to check the fluid level (it was full) waited about 15 mins and went to move the truck, As soon as I turned the key and started the engine the CEL came on and the OD light started flashing, the transmission would engage in forward gears but would just chatter when you tried to accelerate.
I checked the codes and found P0743, P0750, P0755, P1747 and P1760 set. I tried clearing the codes again several times and come back instantly when the key is turned on.
I doubt all the electrical solenoids in the transmission have failed at the same time. I suspect the internal connector and/or harness maybe faulty. what is the best course of diagnosis on this? where so I start?

I have a 99 Mountaineer AWD 5.0 (143K) and having some issues with it. O/D light is flashing once in awhile so decided to check the codes.
- P07401 (Torque converter)
- P1728 (Transmission slip)
The truck shift fine and no having really issues when driving even if there is a weird noise around 70mph.

Yesterday I had a flashing O/D light come on for about a minute, a quick scan shows a P1747 code indicating a short in the EPC solenoid circuit. Poked around the harness this morning and found this:
I'm guessing transmission fluid shouldn't be there. Do I have to replace the whole internal transmission harness to solve this? How much of a job is that?

2001 Ranger 3.0 liter has developed a transmission casualty. I was driving along at 30 mph and the transmission went into "limp' mode with O/D light flashing and truck will only barely creep along with high engine rpm. When I got the truck home I was able to retrieve a p0720, output shaft speed sensor signal fault. I had hoped that replacing the sensor would solve this casualty.
Of course this was not the case. I have read all the posts I can find for this particular fault and realize that I must electrically trace the continuity of this circuit and also ensure that it's not grounded. I have been unable to find the needed wiring diagrams or pin out information.
Before I have to try and blindly start pawing through the connectors I'm looking for the pinout for the PCM and perhaps the bulk connector above the engine between the PCM and the transmission wiring harness. I am also keen to hear of any diagnostic tips that I may have overlooked.

So while driving to work I start experiencing some weird behavior with the transmission. It would shift hard and seem like it wasn't pulling hard at all. I looked down and saw the overdrive off light flashing. Got to work, turned the car off then started back up and the light was off. Any thoughts?

I have a 2003 mountaineer v-6 awd drives pretty good but od light is always flashing even if ignition switch is open and truck not started..and check transmission on message display also..the only thing that i feel its really tight on turns as if it wants to lock up but once steering gets straight it runs fine... I know that a regular scanner cant pull codes I got to go to transmission shop but chances are there gonna tell me its trans time....

Last week my transmission overheated after I saw the the gauge headed toward the red area I shut it down. After shutting it down, 2 minutes later the "Wrench" warning light came on. I hit "OK" and within 7 minutes the temp. was back in the middle.
This was the situation, My truck is a 2013 F350 4X4 SRW Crew Cab 65,000 miles towing a 15000 lbs. gooseneck trailer on a uphill service road, similar to a fire road. Was into it a mile and half into when a steeper section can and I dropped into "2" still in 2WD. Trans Temp. climbed with minutes and I shut it down. Did not look at exact temps when it happened, remember engine temp gauge in the middle.
Backed the truck down the hill a short distance and unhooked. Trans gauge went down to middle (normal) and was able to continue up the hill 2 more miles no problem, without the trailer. I have towed since around town with same trailer and no problems. Checked the trans fluid and it looks like new, clear red.
Here's sum history, I'm running Mag-Hy Tech Trans pan installed at 45,000 miles with a fluid change at the time of install. Towed plenty of times in between install and date of problem.
Had the truck in for service the previous day before the overheating for Oil Change, brakes, and coolant change. Nothing related to trans.
Wondering if I have a trans cooler issue? Temp Sensor issue? OR this is the way the transmission operates and it just could take the load and conditions???

My 2002 Ford Airbag light is flashing 46. I believe this is the Drivers side crash senor. I am repairing the left front fender and left front wheel suspension. I have replaced the two air bags and airbag control module. Where is the left front crash sensor?
