Ford - Freestyle :: 2005 - Shaking If Drive Over 60 MPH
Jan 29, 2011
I took our 2005 Ford Freestyle to get an oil change this morning. It is now shaking violently if we drive it more than 60 mph.

View 2 RepliesI have a 2005 Ford Freestyle 140,000 miles, that has kind of a hiccup miss also there are times when all of the gauges drop and them come back up. I have had the car at the dealership twice and to another mechanic. When I took it to the dealership the first time they told me that it was the spark plugs and the number 1 coil also had a mouse nest in intake manifold. I have replaced the spark plugs, coil 1, clean intake and replaced gasket, replaced MAF, fuel rail sensor and EGR as the codes have been read.
Last time I picked it up from the mechanic it started missing in less than 10 miles to the dealership. The computer said nothing at first then the mechanic took a drive with it. He did have the gauges drop. The codes said charging system. My other mechanic check the battery said it was charging fine and that the alternator and battery cables are all good. Dealership and mechanic are at a loss for what to do.
Last night I was sitting in the car looking for a button that had lost. The car had not been driven all day, off, no key in the ignition. I heard the static noise that I have become familiar with and looked at the cluster and the gauges were all at the below their normal off position shaking and then stopped and returned to normal position. Should I change cables, battery and alternator even when tested they say that they are OK?
My freestyle has 239K on it and the it has been infrequently having periods of starting the car and having no drive and then turning it off and every thing is fine when you start again. The other day it stuck in 3rd gear and wouldn't go above 50. We stopped the car and started it and ran fine but the check engine and transmission light came on.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2005 SEL Freestyle with 114K miles. Cyl #3 missing. Has all the symptoms of a "lean misfire" - reading the code said #3. The indy mechanic already replaced the spark plug and the coil. Misfire still a problem. Tried to put some cleaner in there which did not work. He thinks the head needs to be replaced ....
The a/c is also busted. Needs a compressor. Not to mention I'm probably looking at brakes before much longer.
I have a 2005 Ford Freestyle Limited AWD and there is a loud ticking noise at idle. It seems to quite a little when put in gear.
View 6 RepliesI have a 2005 Ford Freestyle with 59,xxx miles. My wife and I drive it less than 7,000 miles p/year. About six months ago it began to surge (we had already taken it back to the dealer for some work on a recall related to surges while idling). However, the surge that now occurs is not related to the recall--it can happen anytime, even when on the highway while in cruise control at 70 mph. It makes the driveability of the car questionable. We have had it back to the Ford deal repeatedly, only to be told a number of high dollar things that seem to be based on guesses rather than actual data. No codes have come up with computer diagnostics.
We have also taken to independent mechanics, only to be told there is nothing wrong. Only once did a mechanic say that he 'felt' the surging when he test drove the vehicle. But even then, the shop said that they would have to do a tune-up (which raised a red flag with me because tune-ups no longer seem to be the proper term to be used with modern engine maintenance). I did a lot of research and as a result I asked a mechanic to test the fuel pump. The result is that the low pressure was 39.5 lbs, and, the high pressure was also 39.5 lbs.
Fitted new snow tires with the intent of leaving them on year round. Now find that the Escape is pretty well un drivable due to shake at all speeds. Balance has been checked by two tire shops. I think that the problem is that the deep blocks of tread are "squirming"The tires are surprisingly quiet but unfortunately will have to go.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2007 Ford Freestyle and last summer the A/C would only blow cold air when you would accelerate. If you were idling like at a stoplight it would blow warm air. I bought one of those freon refill kits and added freon but it said I was already over pressurized. So now that winter has passed I bought an AC manifold gauge kit and emptied the system and tried starting over. When I add freon the low pressure side goes up way too much and the high pressure side doesnt go up enough. So the low pressure side is over the recommended pressure and the high side is under the recommended pressure. Do I need to replace the compressor or is it something else? (I can also hear the compressor kick in when I put on the A/C)
View 5 RepliesI just had a leaking transmission seal replaced and I was told by the mechanic that the Freestyle was notorious for leaking. Is that correct?? Will this car need lots of repairs if I keep it.
View 5 RepliesMy stepmother has a 2006 Ford Freestyle AWD with a 3.0L Volvo engine. It seems to be consuming a great deal of oil. (Definitely not leaking it.) But not on a regular basis.... Within a couple weeks of changing the oil this time, it has consumed nearly 2 quarts! Other times it hardly uses any. This has been going on for a couple years now. She has taken it to the dealership numerous times and they cannot seem to find the issue. It doesn't have a "burnt" smell when I pull the dipstick either. The mileage is low as she hardly drives the car. (Under 80,000 miles) I've looked online and can't seem to find this problem elsewhere.
View 3 RepliesI have a 98 F250LD, its a Lariat, so everything electric/auto. Shift on the Fly 4x4, 5.4, 188K, Factory rear air suspension. Typical Minnesota rust. Anyway, I just noticed in the last 75 miles or so, a drive-line vibration. There is nothing until 39 MPH. Then from 39-41 MPH there is a decent vibration. Stops until 50, then from 50 MPH up it is a steady vibration. I have already changed the u-joints in the rear shaft. I have pulled/wiggled on everything else I can think of with no luck of finding of anything loose.
One thing I did notice, is that the front axle is locked in all the time. How long it has been like this: years for all I know... I can flip the switch from 2wd to 4H and 4L. It all seems to work fine, I hear clicking, the 4x4 engages, the proper lights come on/off. The front axle will pull when supposed to. The transfer case seems to be working fine, but the front axle won't disengage. I am hoping this can be fixed cheaply/easily (DIYer), and also hoping this explains my low fuel mileage.
Front axle? Where to look or what to try and fix for the vibration?
Recently I've noticed that every time when shifting from park to drive and occasionally from reverse to drive in my 05 Golf GLS, I would have to remain off the gas for 3-4 seconds otherwise the car would jerk forward. If I press on the gas ever so slightly, the rpm would go up to around 1000 then jerk. Why this is happening?
View 2 RepliesI have a 2005 f150, when my AC is on (it's summer in the south so yes it's on constantly) my truck shakes. The best way to describe it: you know when you're at an idle, and the vehicle wants to stall out and it has that shake to it? That's what my truck does when the AC is on, I mostly feel it when there is no gas applied. Also my AC makes a horrid sound when idling (like a loud pop now and then) and unless I'm driving, it won't blow cool air. Why?! Simple fix or time for a new AC?
View 13 RepliesI have a 2005 Ford Freestyle. The climate control fan currently will not shut off or change speeds. It runs a full speed all the time the car ignition is on. I changed out the control module but didn't work.
View 11 RepliesI have a 06 Ford Freestyle with roughly 121,000 miles that I purchased 2 months ago. I love the car. Only issue I am noticing is when accelerating at take off, once the car gets up to speed I notice a slight, quick pull to the left and then its fine. I sometime feel this pull when turning to right(like around curves).

I bought it used and it had a slight helicopter noise coming from under the hood. Mechanics at Ford dealership didn't find it remarkable. Now, 16 months and 15K miles later, the noise has increased in volume so much over the past 30 days that typical road noise doesn't disguise it. Folks are giving me looks when I drive by in the parking lot.
I have a clip of the noise posted if you want to take a listen: [URL] .... I've read some posts that this is symptomatic of transmission problems...specifically the insert shaft is grooved, warped, etc.
I have a 2000 Volvo S80 T6. I have been putting in premium gasoline ever since I got it about 5 months ago. The previous owner did the same. I called my mechanic and asked about regular gas vs premium gas. He said regular gas would do just fine. So about 4 days ago I took my car to a parking lot and had some fun in the snow. It was mainly just pulling the e-brake around corners. I hit a few snowbanks, but no visible damage to the car. Anyway, I was below a quarter of a tank (21 gal) and I filled it with regular. I drove it straight home after that less than a mile away. Now when I drive it above 40mph the entire car vibrates as a vibrating chair does. It is almost a shaking, even. At first I thought it was because of the gas, but after talking to friends, they think it could be an alignment issue due to my parking lot activities. I also just had to replace the transmission and brake lines about a month ago. What do you think is the cause and the actual problem with my car?
View 3 RepliesI was driving my f150 going down the highway. Cruise set at 110kmh. All of a sudden truck started shaking And sounded horrible. Shut off the cruise. Floored it.it misses fired like no tomorrow and no power, looked down check engine light was flashing. Then all of a sudden everything normal. Now its intermediate and light solid on. So I thought I will just I will hook up the code reader. And NOTHING it didn't turn On. No beep nothing. Tried 2 readers no connection. Trucks a 2005 ford f150 fx4 5.4 217600km on the clock
View 2 RepliesIt seems like I am going thru brakes I just replaced my brakes in May and my Rotors in July and when I brake my truck shakes like crazy. Is it the brakes again or am I missing something.
View 7 RepliesI have a 2004 Camry LE with 297,756 miles and my from right wheel shakes when I drive 60+ mph. I took it to my mechanic and he told me to get a high speed wheel balance. So I took it to the tire shop only to be told I need to replace my tires. All four was replaced but the shaking continued. I took it back to the mechanic and he then told me the lower control arm bushing need to be replace. I replaced the left and right lower control arm and the shaking is still there. What could be causing the shaking on my right front end?
View 10 RepliesI have a 2005 F150 XLT with a 5.4 (198,000miles) RWD. A few months back it developed a miss due to bad COP's, typical shuddering around 50-60 MPH.
I pulled off the COPs and while I was in there I pulled my old plugs as well. New Motorcraft SP515 plugs went in with a little nickle anti-seize being careful not to get any near the end of the plug and I put a set of Granatelli COPs on with a little di-electric grease on the inside of the boot. The miss went away and the truck drove like a champ.
I will also note that I replaced the front wheel hub/rotors, front calipers and new pads. I resurfaced the rear rotors, new pads and new E-brake shoes also.
The issue I am having is under light acceleration, or "normal" driving conditions the vehicle has a mild shake which eventually smooths out.
My first assumption was that I did not torque my front wheel hubs correctly or that I messed something up so I took the truck to my local front end/alignment shop for a full inspection and they said everything is great. They also said that they didn't really feel the vibrations that I mentioned. I am used to this truck driving very smooth up until the misfire situation so to me it is quit noticeable. After the front end shop I went to Discount tire cause they mentioned that my rear wheels are bouncing pretty good and that may be what I am noticing. Turns out the tires were out of balance which Discount took care of and rotated my tires while I was there.
The vibration is STILL THERE! No CELs to reference, just an obnoxious vibration. I tried to isolate the issue by accelerating in 1,2, and in D. The issue occurs regardless of the gear I start off in.
