Ford - Explorer :: Loud Tires At Certain Speeds Around 40 Mph

Mar 29, 2012

Background of the car, had a leak in my power steering pump that I had patched, and had the front wheel bearings replaced. whenever I get to about 40 mph, the tires sound quite loud, however they quiet around 45 and don't get loud again until about 65. However, when I go left around a bend the noise disappears. Also, maybe unrelated sometimes when I back up and then put it into drive, the car stalls out. I'm curious if this issue just means that I need to replace my power steering pump or if it might be something else? It's a 2005 ford Explorer.

Prius 2016 (Gen 4) :: Factory Tires Are Making Loud Noise At High Speeds

Just curious about the tires that came from the factory to be noisy and loud when at highway speeds? I only have 1500 miles on the tires, will getting more miles on the tires say after a few 1000 miles or so? Also what is quieter option without sacrificing mpg?

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: Tires Sound When Under Load At Speeds Above 37 - 40 MPH

The issue: when I reach 37-40mph I have a new sound which I believe is the transmission 4R100. It sounds like a flat spot on a tire, or the sound tires make when they leave the sticker on them. The cadence of the sound is slower than the rotation of the wheels.

If I let off the accelerator, the sound stops, as soon as I add load by pressing the accelerator the sound returns. If I shift to Neutral the sound is gone.

If I coast at any speed the sound is gone. It is only audible when under load at speeds above 37-40 mph. The cadence does increase as I speed up, but it doesn't sound as fast as the motor is turning (~1900 rpm's).

I monitor the truck with torque pro using the PIDs defined here on FTE. I can see lock-up in 3rd and the shift to overdrive. When in lock-up, I see 1-7rpm TCSlip.

Watching transmission temp as reported by torque, the hottest I see is 183* pulling an enclosed 6x12 @ 75 mph. Ambient temp is 95*. Excursion currently has 240k miles on the clock.

This sound was first heard by my wife two weeks ago. I thought I had tire issues and they needed to be rotated. The sound is still present, and now identified only when the truck is in drive, and under load, regardless of me pulling a trailer.

Yesterday on my 500 mile trip, the truck hiccuped several times which I believe was around the time I was either moving in or out of overdrive. Details in a different thread: [URL] .....

Anyway, I've looked at all culprits and can't find anything with the motor, or electrical system. I can't get to a transmission shop until Monday, and won't have my AE until I get home Sunday night. I have a 500 mile run tomorrow. I checked the transmission fluid and it's at a good level, pink, and doesn't have a bad smell.

Ford Escape / Hybrid :: Snow Tires - Unable To Drive Due To Shaking At All Speeds

Fitted new snow tires with the intent of leaving them on year round. Now find that the Escape is pretty well un drivable due to shake at all speeds. Balance has been checked by two tire shops. I think that the problem is that the deep blocks of tread are "squirming"The tires are surprisingly quiet but unfortunately will have to go.

Ford - Explorer :: 2008 - Noises After Tires Replaced?

My husband had my tires replaced this week. I drive a 2008 Ford Explorer. The car has been running fine - no problems what so ever. Now there is a sound when I turn or go quite slowly. We live on a street that is 25mph so we go slowly to start. I hear the sound while going straight at slower speeds, but also when turning - almost at full lock. It is difficult to describe the sound - not grinding and not screeching. Its almost as if I turned the wheel too far. The sound when running straight is lower maybe rubbing. The sound seems to be coming from the right side of the car. I can also feel the sound, but it isn't a strong vibration. My husband drove the car and said he felt nothing (of course - just like TV repair man syndrome). All 4 tires were replaced. Hubby checked the nuts - says they were alright.

Ford - Explorer :: 2000 - Clicking Sound In Rear Tires

My 2000 Explorer has been having recently a very strange sound coming from the rear area, especially the rear right tire. You can hear a clicking sound from inside... its not a nut, bolt or anything stuck to the tires, its just a clicking sound that seems to come as the tire spins. Any known causes for this? Should I be extra worried?

Ford - Explorer :: 1996 - Sounds Like Tires With Aggressive Tread Roar

My practically new 1996 Explorer, 4wd, 4.0 with only 162,000 miles has developed what sounds like tires with agressive tread roar. The tires are Goodyear Wrangler RT/S with maybe 20,000 miles on them. I have had tie rods, upper and lower, shocks. The CV boots are like new. Front end was aligned when front end work was done. Tire wear pattern is normal.

Tires rotated last week (I hoped that would stop the roar, no affect). Transfer case and front diff. show no signs of lube leak. I am at the end of my wits as to what can cause the roar. At 30 MPH I have to turn up the volume on the radio to hear, at 60 the roar fades. A slight turn to the right on the steering wheel and the noise stops.

Prius V :: Tires Hum And Whine A Lot At Low Speeds

It seems like the tires on my new Prius is very noisy. Sounds kinda like they're snow tires in that they hum and whine a lot at low speeds. I only have about 200 miles on the car. Tires are Toyo Proxes on 17" wheels and are rated M&S.

Ford - Explorer :: 2003 - Front Tires Replaced / Transmission And Drive Train Hitting Each Other

Recently had my tire guy replace only my front tires on my 03 Ford Explorer. Drove it on the highway and it felt and sounded like the transmission and drive train were hitting each other. Having him now replace the rears as well. Hopefully, they will now be happy together. Fronts were new rears were worn and different tires. Will the new tires reset everything I screwed up?

Ford - Explorer :: 1999 - Clunk Noise Then Steering Kind Of Locked Up / Tires Dragging

I have a friend who called me today, she has a 1999 Explorer Sport with over 200,000 miles on it. She said she was coming home the other day and as she was pulling into her driveway she heard a clunk then the steering kind of locked up, and it felt like a tire was dragging. She moved the truck later and said that it goes forward and backwards fine but grabs and skids while trying to turn.

She called her local mech, and he thought the diff could have given out on her and is basically acting like a locked diff rather than open.. I think the front axle must have somehow engaged, and is stuck.. So my question is this, how does the front axle on a explorer engage.. I know on Jeeps and Chevys there is an actuator that moves an arm that moves a sleeve that engages both sides of the axle. Does ford work the same way?? It would seem to me that if the truck is going front and back fine the diff itself should be ok?? The xfer case was replaced about 3 years ago.

Ford - Explorer :: 1999 - Speedometer Way Off At Low Speeds / Correct At 70 MPH

1999 Explorer Sport 4L 6 cyl SOHC ... Don't know if this is strange or not. My speedometer reads about 5 mph high at 20, 4 mph high at 30, 3 mph high at 40, 2 mph high at 50, 1 mph high at 60 and is finally correct at 70. It's a perfect linear relationship. I've verified this with a handheld field GPS as well as several phone apps. The tires have always been the stock size of 275/35R15.

Lexus GX 2004-09 :: Steering Wheel Vibrating At Highway Speeds After Tires Rotated

Just rotated my tires this weekend and noticed today that the steering wheel has a vibration in it at highway speeds, 65-70mph. It did not do this at all before I rotated the tires, why it's doing it now? Tires are fairly new and Bridgestones H/Ts.

I know my rotors are warped and need replaced but the vibration I'm referring to is when I am not braking.

Prius (Gen 3) :: 2012 Toyota - Front Tires And Steering Wheel Vibrate At 60+ Mph Speeds?

I bought a 2012 Toyota Prius 2 on Jan 28, 2013 (just a little over a month ago). The front tires and steering wheel vibrated at highway speeds (here in NY 65-70mph) and so I took it in, they said it needed wheel balancing and rotation. Fine.

Then I was told to wait it out because of the "snow" and "ice" could be the culprit, fine. Then a week or so later, same problem still, even when it got warmer. Took it back in. This time the wheels were "off balance" again. Hmmm, that's funny. So they did a dynamic or forced balance? I don't know exactly, but it was a step up from "normal" balancing (according to them).

The past couple weeks it hasn't been vibrating nearly as much, but it is coming back again intermittently. Today I was driving home from Watertown, NY to Syracuse. It's about an hour or so drive, and it is a state highway, so it isn't too torn up or potholed. Between 66-70mph the steering wheel vibrates quite bad and RANDOMLY at that. Some roads the car at 70mph feels super smooth others not! And the weirdest part is some of the roads it feels smooth on are bumpy or slightly torn up!

I've looked up all the causes of steering wheel and tire vibrations, and I see that there are about 5-10 potential causes. If I have to take this car in one more time I might just scream.

Touareg :: Tires Are Quite Loud When Driving On The Highway

My T-reg had Toyo Proxy tires on it when I bought it. They are quite loud when driving on the highway. VW has said that there is nothing wrong with the CV joint, so we are thinking it must be the tires. A couple of tire places have mentioned that while the Proxy is a good tire, it is not a tire to have on this car. We really want to replace them but don't want to spend $800+ on a good tire to have the same results. What tires are others driving using without getting the woo-woo-woo sound on the road?

Ford - Explorer :: 2005 - Odd Quirk Only Happens When Cruise Is On At Lower Speeds

My '05 Ford Explorer Limited 4WD has an odd quirk. It only happens when the cruise is on at lower speeds, 30-40 MPH. I'm driving along and all of a sudden the truck shuts down. No accelerator. no power steering, dash all lit up. I wrestle the truck to the side of the road, turn the key off and then re-start it. Turns over, runs no problem. The truck runs great otherwise, has 67K on it.

Ford - Explorer :: 1993 - Intermittent Shake At Highway Speeds

A friend of mine has a '93 Explorer 4x4 with an automatic. He's getting an intermittent shake at highway speeds. It shows up every 5-10 minutes or so. Apparently the problem has been going on for a few months now. I took it for a test drive the other day, and it feels similar to driving on rumble strips. It shakes in both 2wd and 4wd, but he says it seems worse in 4wd. The vibration feels more like it's coming through the seat than the steering wheel. The vibration will go away if you take the foot off of the accelerator, or if you pull it down into Drive. He's got about 220K miles on it. The previous owner said the transmission was rebuilt about 30K miles ago, but who knows. He's had it in the shop for a couple of days, and they've checked the usual suspects - u-joints, ball joints, and the sort.
