My 2005 Ram 1500 makes a knocking noise (like a diesel) when i first start it up. The colder it is the louder it is. Once warm it is quite and i have no performance issues.
View 12 RepliesI have recently noticed that my Azera makes a "knocking" sound right after starting the engine. It just about a dozen of fast short knocks one after another and it is gone after 2 seconds (like a diesel engine started on low temp. It appears more often when the engine is rather cold.
View 27 Repliesit was warmer the day than it usually was so it dosnt make the noise as bad however there is usually a lot of clatter/knock from the engine when cold. does it at idle and while accelerating. it gets less once the engine warms up but has been doing it for a while. car has 93k miles and synthetic oil is used. there is also a metal rattle sound almost like a heat shield that is loose. idk if that is part of the engine issue or not. but it only happens in winter or when temps fall below 60 degrees. kinda hard to hear on the vid but its there.
View 19 RepliesJust started happening today. 2004 Camry LE 4-cyl. About 180k on the clock. Not sure if started has ever been replaced.
RIght after I release the ignition from the "start" position, I hear a load grinding noise, sounds a lot like the noise a Zip Tie makes when being pulled. After a second or so, the noise ceases and the car runs normally.
I suspect the starter may not be disengaging quickly enough. If starter, do I need to replace it, or is there some component that can be replaced?
I have a 2001 Toyota Tacoma that has a knock or ticking in cold weather. The problem starts sometimes immediately after I start and other times it is only when I press on the gas in the cold mornings after a few min warm up. The noise goes away after 10 min. The question I am wondering is this:
1: could it be worn piston rings and the pistons are slapping the cylinder wall
2: is it an oil pump problem or a oil restriction issue
3: is it a valve guide issue
4: with the history of the 2.7 having exhaust manifold issues (poor manufacturing) could a cracked manifold be the issue
I change the oil myself, the oil filters have been OEM toyota, the noise has been going on since 60,000 miles, the truck is at 230,000 miles.
it never ends. upon start up of the treg ('04 v6) the a/c goes through a bunch of clicks and clacks. this used to be remedied with the activation of inside air only; now it does not matter and is non-stop. any remedies? i am going to get this fixed before i run over 50k. i am at 49550 right now!
View 5 RepliesWent out to my car a moment ago, Dodge Neon 2000, couldn't get the engine to start. The lights all come on, battery seems fine. It sounds like the engine isn't even trying to turn over. Instead, the car makes a weird chugging noise. I've got a recording here, is someone still awake that could give me a clue as to what this is?
[URL] .... -- I turn the key twice here and let it chug. You can hear the noise at about the 2-second mark. I don't think I had any advance warning that anything was wrong, though I did have the car in the shop a few days ago to replace a water pump and timing belt.
Sounds like a squirrel knocking on the rear hatch for a few seconds. Is this the fuel pump by any chance??
What i have noticed is that the relay clicking in the CECM is no longer clicking, yet now i hear this knocking in the rear hatch area when i start it up after it sits overnight.
I have two 2009 stick Focus SE 4drs (one for me and one for the Mrs.) Both are PZEV. Mine, with 66k runs great; hers, with 43k talks back when under initial load. When starting up from a stop or up shifting in any gear we get a snorting or knock in the 1000 -1500 rpm range. Once above 1500 rpm all is quiet. The funny thing is that if it is raining out, the noise does not occur. The car is also an absolute dog on any hill, putting the pedal to the floor does absolutely nothing (no knock, either) Having an identical car myself, and not experiencing these two things, I would guess that something is amiss. What might be the cause?
View 2 RepliesWeird noise I am hearing with my mothers new Elantra she just picked up. When starting engine has a knocking noise, not kinding. Letting motor run for a few minutes it goes away but is concerning. I was wondering if there is an issue with the MPFI engine which i believe is new this year which replaced the GDI engine. Definitely does not sound normal to me. to me it sounds like a rode knock or hydro lifter issue. Are these engines known for this. My mother traded her 2012 civic for this with 4500 miles. She did not like the seats and dash board layout in it and we got a good deal on this car.
View 17 RepliesI have a 2005 Chevy Cavalier and have been realizing that the ride has been getting noisier, but when I make a left hand turn ( or even turn the wheel 5 degrees or so to the left) it is much quieter. It sounds like a low vibrating sound and seems to shake the whole front end of my chassis. I can feel the vibration through the gas pedal, and it continues even when in nuetral or without the gas depressed. It is worse between 40-65 mph. Loose parts, misalignment, motor mounts, bad belts? And what it might cost to have this fixed?

View 13 RepliesI own a 2007 Dodge Ram Pickup (3500). One day it started by itself while parked outside in the driveway. It drove into one of my other pickups and pushed it into my side by side. It finally pushed both aside and was headed toward the house but was stopped by a tree. I heard a loud crashing noise so I looked out the window and saw what was happening. I jumped into the pickup to try and turn it off but the key wasn't turned on. I put the clutch in and took it out of gear but it just reved up more. The horn was blaring and smoke boiling out. I turned it off by opening up the hood and unhooking the battery cable.

I talked to a couple specialists who said it could be valve noise another said valve noise would not abate when the engine warmed up. He suspected piston slap. A valve adjustment is pricey and the local independents are afraid to touch it given the complexity and needed shim packs. If it is piston slap I would be disappointed after spending a pile of dough to still have the same noise.
Have I missed a possible cause?
I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey with over 100k miles. Recently, it has started making a loud whining noise (it reminds me of the sound my old manual transmission sedan would make when I was in second gear but needed to switch into third) when we drive at highway speeds (55 mph or more) for more than 20 minutes or so. The sound continues at lower speed and even when we go into park. It doesn't stop until we turn off the engine, but the next time we drive the sound doesn't start until we've been driving at high speeds for a while. It also intensifies when we make sharp turns. I took it to my mechanic who thought it was simply the fan coming on because our coolant was low, but we refilled that and it hasn't made a difference. Also the temp gauge doesn't show that or car is overheating.
View 8 RepliesI have a 2011 Limited and the center console and dash around the nav system is very brittle and makes a crinkling noise when touched slightly. I can pop the shifter bazel and all the surrounding plastic off with a slight finger pressure. Over bumps and when I'm driving with side pressure from my legs everything makes noise.

View 10 Repliesl have a 98 s10 with the "x" code 4.3l. While driving the cel started flashing and it lost all power. after got home i scanned the codes and revealed a MAF sensor error. replaced the maf sensor, which did not work. Then replaced the cap, rotor, and wires as they were burned through. This made the truck run fine when given gas, but makes a knocking sound at idle and stalls.

So with that in mind, I had a local garage (trusted...dealership in this area is notoriously crooked) replace my timing belt, tensioner, idlers, thermostat, and water-pump last week. I've had the car back for about 3 days and I just noticed today, that while the car is idling, I'm hearing a knocking noise coming from the engine somewhere (could be while I'm driving too, but maybe I just not hearing it) - I don't recall this sound before bringing it in for the work. When I rev up the engine a bit, it goes away, but when the car sits for a few minutes, it comes back.
I've already had it back in since the change for a defective tensioner, which the garage replaced free of charge. I plan on calling them first thing Monday morning to bring it in so they can have a look, but in the meantime, what this likely to be?
I have a 2002 1.8T with about 75k miles which makes a harsh rhythmic sound at idle after about 30 minutes of driving. If I tap the accelerometer to increase the rpm and release it goes away and is silent. Recently it also seems to be making the same sound when it starts but goes away as soon as I drive. The sound seems to be coming from the front lower right (passenger side).
I have changed the timing belt about 18 months ago (along with the water pump, tensioner, etc. using an ECS tuning kit) and it ran fine (seemed even smoother than before) but it had a small engine oil leak which my mechanic fixed. I think this sound started after he repaired the leak. I've left the car with him for a week and he just called and said it he couldn't figure it out but it could be an oil pressure problem but I have not had any issues with an oil pressure light.
I have had issues with the P0411 code over the same and have replaced both the secondary air pump and the combi valve but the code just reappeared and my mechanic says he has checked the entire system again and can't figure out what is causing the problem. Not sure if the two can be related but just thought I would add that. The car runs fine otherwise and I have always used synthetic and the large oil filter but I am beginning to think this could be a sludge issue (the noise).
My car is making the dreaded lifter tick noise. The dealerhip is telling me that my lifters need to be replaced at a cost of $1200. I have been letting my car warm up for about 15 minutes before driving because I cannot stand that noise. I am living near Charlotte, NC and would like to know if there is a cheaper fix for my problem.
