Chrysler - Newyorker :: 1992 - Misfire / Jerking Going Uphill
Apr 5, 2013
I have a 92 (3.3L) New Yorker 5th Avenue that has makes the car jerk badly going uphill and occasionally makes a backfire / misfire noise. It is a general jerking, not localized (right / left front) by feel. It starts ok and runs smoothly at idle but once you put it in drive and start acceleration, it begins to jerk. It has over 200k mi. I have had the fuel filter replaced, new plugs and plug wires put on. Mechanics have ran codes on the engine and transmission and tell me that no bad codes show up.

I have a '77 Chrysler New Yorker with the 450 engine. I'm told the electronic leaning module is out and apparently unreplaceable: can't find any parts anywhere. The car won't run w/o it. Somebody said I could maybe install some sort of after market carb conversion?

I have an 88 New Yorker whose digital amp gauge swings between its lowest and highest setting this makes the audio command center report electrical malfunction service immediately. Shortly after the car dies it will restart after 15 to 30 minutes. It doesn't throw any relevant codes, has had the alternator replaced still no luck.

I am looking to purchase a 1993 Chrysler New Yorker and when I test drove it I noticed that every time the brake pedal was pushed a mechanical whirring noise was audible. This happened every time the brake was pushed whether the car was moving or not. The car brakes seemed to work fine and there were no other noises associated with normal brake problems. The noise seemed to come from inside the car. What that might be? Also, any other reasons to not buy a 93 New Yorker with about 115,000 miles on it for cheap?

I just purchased my Elantra MD for just 2 years. Yesterday I went uphill (not steep) then decide to change from auto to manual, then I move the stick, it shows I am currently in gear 5 so i downshift to 4. After a few second the was a 'jerking' with 'thump' sound from the bay. My rpm came down slowly, i pushed the pedal but the rpm wont go up. it just glide. Shut down and up the engine changed nothing. When i try put reverse gear, it reversed fast as if i pushed the pedal, but i am not.

2004 F150 FX4 5.4L. I drove from Vancouver to Edmonton and back this week and I started to get some issues. If I'm in overdrive at highway speeds, from about 90km/h to 120km/h give or take, which would be around 1600-2100rpm, and then I try to accelerate, sometimes on flats, rarely on downhills, but always on uphills, the truck will begin to jerk fore and aft. It feels like it's something through the driveline, either the driveshaft or the differential, but I really can't say for certain as I'm stuck in the driver's seat while this is happening.
If the truck downshifts or if I take it out of overdrive, i.e. getting the revs up high, the problem is no more. Other than the issue I'm having, it operates perfectly so this is very odd. I know that overdrive isn't a hill climbing gear, but normally an engine in the wrong gear will simply lug along until it's downshifted. The entire truck jerking shouldn't happen.
On my way to Edmonton, I noticed that this would cause one single, minor jerk. This is my way of describing it, but it was like the driveshaft had spun freely and then promptly re-engaged with the differential gear, causing a clunk. I doubt that's actually what happened, but I'm just trying to explain the sensation. It kind of feels like trailer jerking.
On the way back to Vancouver, it was a lot worse. Like I said, the whole truck would be jerking about once per second but there was one time that I found the sweet spot and it began jerking rapidly, twice per second. I threw it out of overdrive to stop this but the vibration caused the check engine light to flash a few times but it went away and didn't stay on.
What I might be up against? Been doing a little research. Seems as though this is common and it's supposedly the spark plugs, but those only have 50,000km on them.

I just bought a 2005 Chrysler Sebring sedan 2 weeks ago, has 94,000miles on it. Had no problems with anything until 6 days after purchasing the car. I just got on the highway & was about a mile onto the highway & I was already up to speed 65mph & my whole car just starts jerking (bucking like a horse) & I let off the gas & it'd stop. I'd give it gas again & it would start to jerk(buck) again; I had to get to work so I drove it for the couple miles I had left to get to work.
As I got onto the off ramp I noticed my car didn't jerk/buck like it was at the higher speed. After work I drove back home & on the highway without any problems. I also didn't have any warning lights come on while it was jerking/bucking. (Before this incident, I had drove to my moms, which is 1hr & 45min away, & back with no problems). I took it to a local mechanic & they found nothing wrong, & they test drove it & checked all the fluids/filters/spark plugs. I did need new front break pads & rotors so I had them change those.
Four days later my car did it again.. the jerking/bucking. But this time it was at a low speed & I noticed a ding(like the kind of ding your car makes if you don't have your seat belt on), but again I saw no warning lights come on. I kept driving & was almost to get onto the highway & was about 20mph & my car started to jerk/buck again. I thought it might be nothing so I kept driving to get onto the highway. I turned onto the highway onramp & started going 20-25mph & my car started to jerk/buck like a horse & not let me accelerate any faster.
So I pulled onto the onramp shoulder & turned my car off then back on again & let it sit for about 5 minutes & got on the highway & it was like my car had magically been fixed. I got up to speed (65mph) just fine with no jerking/bucking. Again this time none of my warning lights came on & I didn't have any smoke coming out the back end. I of course immediately went strait home, but had not signs of the jerking/bucking. My car also when I start it, all of my dash warning lights come on like they normally would whenever you start up your car, so I know they all work.

My 2005 2.7L 6 cylinder Sebring with 100800 miles that was running fine just started jerking on me last week. It runs fine untill I get it up to 2750RPMs. Its like its getting gas, then not getting gas and jerks forward all in less than a second and then again, and again and again, until I drop the RPMs back down. Any clue on what I should be looking for?

I drive a 1992 Chrysler Imperial. It generally runs really good and I've only had a few minor problems with it. I try to keep up with maintenance for the most part and it only has100000 miles on it. I've had a problem with stalling lately - but mostly when I turn left. It only has such problems when I'm below a half tank of gas.

My truck was jerking like it had a misfire, so I talked to a few people on here and they said it could be a bad coil on plug and some said it could be a spark plug misfiring. I put all new Motorcraft plugs and boots in and the problem of the jerking and possible misfire stopped.......until now, its back! The check engine light has never come on and this problem is getting ever so annoying.
Could it be a dirty fuel filter? Can a coil be bad and not throw a code for the check engine light to come on? Something in the EGR? The problem persist at 1000-2000 RPM's mainly.

I had a misfire under a bit of a load (acceleration) and up hills. I changed spark plus with OEM Motor craft ones, truck ran super nice for a couple week.
Had the engine light flash, slow down and the RPM go up a tiny bit then back down and the light goes off
Now I'm back to miss fire different location, and a rough idle. I've swapped coil packs around and the miss fire stayed on cylinder 4.
Spark plug screwed or injector or ?????

I have a 2005 F-150 5.4L 2WD 90K miles. I started getting a misfire and hard jerk when going uphill. No codes for a few days but misfire got a little worse and more jerking at full throttle acceleration or level throttle up a hill got codes p0300 and p0171. I replaced the fuel filter cleaned MAF and changed plugs Motorcraft plugs (none of them broke during replacement). Miss got worse. Missing at idle and no power 3K rmp to get to 40. Only code pulled was p0171. Replaced upstream O2 sensors and COPs. Will barely idle now. Dies when put in gear. Full throttle barely moves forward a few feet just sputters. Checked vacuum lines cannot find anything. Only code I get is P0171. Fuel injectors next? Or shop?

I have a 2002 Chrysler Town & Country FWD with 3.8L V6. Recently, I had an error code of MISFIRE CYL 5. I changed my spark plugs and added some injector cleaner to fuel tank with no results. Then I replaced my ignition coil and the misfire stopped (according to engine computer after reset and smoother engine). While it was misfiring, the gas mileage was reading about 10-11 mpg city. I changed my oil and air filter, switching to all 10w-30 synthetic oil. Since then, my mpg reads around 8 mpg! Before the misfire, I would get 17 mpg in the city.
One other issue that coincides is a 10-12" long thin vacuum hose near the engine snapped and I replaced it with a common rubber hose. The hose I replaced it with was at least twice inside diameter. I think I need to get the reducer/thin hose setup from a dealer. If the vac hose would be reducing my fuel economy by 7 mpg? Or did i screw something else up when changing the oil and coil? The engine seems to be running smoothly and I'm having no noticeable problems aside from paying for a gallon of gas that takes me 8 miles!!

Every time I start and put n reverse I had to rev it before i can reverse or it will die, when in drive if i barely put my foot on the gas it stutters like its not getting fuel or a misfire or something. i have changed just about every sensor there is, as well as plugs. it only stutters when lightly on the gas pedal.
*About once a month* after driving about 50miles when you let off the gas going down the road it starts loping real bad, drops about 4-600 rpm until it dies.

2006 PT Cruiser Touring Ed. The engine light came on 2 days ago, had it looked at today and the error code p0304 "cylinder number four misfire" was diagnosed. What causes that and what would need to be done to fix that problem?

I have a 2003 Chrysler Town & Country and the check engine light is on. I brought the van to my mechanic and he told me there was a code that told him there was a misfire on cylinder #1. He started out with replacing the wire to cylinder #1, no change. He replaced the spark plug, no change. He installed a new fuel injector, no change. The van runs a little ruff at idle and when at a stop light.

My second car is a b5 passat, and i disconnected the battery to do some wiring, but now... it sounds like the car won't come out of first gear (it's an automatic) and won't go over 16 mph without jerking like crazy.. I thought of maybe limp mode because my GTI has done that but i don't know.

I was on the highway a couple days ago and i was in sit and go traffic. When i would accelerate everything was fine but when i would come down to a stop or slowing down at about 1500 rpm i felt the car shake or jerk back and forth. It was too a point where I was scared and about to pullover the highway. Car has 1k miles and its a DSG.

I have a 2005 Toyota Prius that was handed down to me from my grandma (1st owner ) . She had given me the car at 70k miles . Over the past two years I have managed to boost the miles up to 110k . My catylic converter has been giving me problems for the past year ( icon showing up on display screen ) . I just got it fixed . Damn thing costed me 1200$ . Shortly after, my car started acting sluggish . Not going over 50mph , jerking as I press the gas , and when I sat at a red light for too long I couldn't get my miles to go over 20mph .
I assumed that it was the 12v auxiliary battery so I had that changed . Another 300$ out the door . Seems to be running "normal" again but it still has that jerk to it and it takes FOREVER to reach up to 70 mpg. I posted a picture of the icon that has appeared before I had the catylic converter changed ... Still displayed on the screen till this day .

I just have a situation that I would like some insight into. I have a 2004 T-reg V6 that jerks while at a constant speed (usually around 40-50 mph). It does it both while cruise is engaged and disengaged. You can also hear a rhythmic "clunk"ing. The jerking and clunking stop if you accelerate or decelerate.
BTW the car is still under full aftermarket warranty from the dealership where we bought it so I would want to try to figure out what this is before the warranty ends.
