Chrysler :: Whistling AC When Car Slightly Accelerates To Recover Speed
Jul 18, 2014
After almost a year of fruitless trips to my local service center of a national used car dealer, I am still having a problem with an in-cabin whistle. This is the problem: There is a whistle inside the cabin of the car when:
1) The AC compressor is on,
2) The car is under slight acceleration, and
3) The engine is running at one of the following RPM ranges: 1500-1800 RPM, 2500 RPM, 3000 RPM.
It will happen at any speed: pulling out of a parking space, or running down the interstate. On a long trip, the whistle will occur every 45-60 seconds while on cruise control, as the car slightly accelerates to recover speed.
I have read that it is likely the AC Expansion Valve (two other posts on CarTalk), but my question is Why the dependence on the engine RPMs? I can make the car whistle continuously if I run the car at 2,500 RPM in 5th gear on the interstate. At 2,400 RPM or 2,600 RPM, however, the whistle disappears. The used car dealer can reproduce the problem on the road but not in the shop.

Having throttle hesitation problems. This is the 3rd time I have had it in for this problem and they can't figure out what is wrong. The vehicle moves slightly forward from a stop and then goes dead for a few seconds then seems to recover and go.

Check engine light comes on, car starts "chugging", recovers, chugs, recovers. So we limp to our destination. Check engine light goes off after car stands overnight. Repeat after driving car again. Mechanic replaced a 4" square "switch" somewhere "hot" last time. Said heat makes it go bad. Can't find anything 4" square under the hood. Mechanic says this part goes out all the time on this model and year.

Very high pitched "whistle"(enough to give you a headache) as vehicle speed increases or fan speed increased. This will not occur on recirculate and will go away if a window or roof is opened.

Is there a typical cause for whistling noise on Elantra ? Mine is a 2011. The whistling noise started recently, and occurs only at high speed say 80 kph and higher. It definitely sounds like wind noise, constant frequency no matter the speed. Does not sound like brake noise or belt noise, and does not change with changes in accelerator or brakes. I have taped up most gaps around the front of the car, including all around the windshield, with no impact. Note that I recently fixed a windshield wiper washer nozzle, which necessitated the removal of the plastic assembly that sits atop the bottom part of the windshield. The re-installation went well and everything seems well seated down (I had to replace 4 plastic rivets).

I've a new Santa Fe bought in March this year. Car works perfectly but i just noticed a whistling noise problem coming from the top/back of the car (it si located over the roof) when reaching speed of 70mph or above.
I removed the roof rack cross rails but still this noise remains. I feel it is something related to the aerodynamic of this car and the particular roof rails system. Tried to tape some connections between the rails and the car roof but nothing is changing.
I drive mostly on highway all days for work and this problem is driving me mad. I took back car to the dealer, he checkd (but i'm not sure) telling that everything is "normal"!

Just wanted to post a recent experience I had with the catalytic converter issues Escapes seem to be prone to. A friend has a 2003 Escape 4x4 with the 3.0 V-6 and automatic transmission. It has 141,000 miles on it, she bought it with 40,000 miles on the vehicle.
Recently it developed driveability issues: No power with a whistling noise and top speed of 10 M.P.H. I researched on here and her symptoms matched threads that came up using the search function. I told her I was pretty sure the front cat was bad and had plugged the rear cat, causing the issue. She took it to a local repair shop and confirmed my diagnosis. Their estimate for repair was north of $1,500.00. My neighbor and I were sure we could repair it cheaper.
We towed it to my house and pulled the front and rear-most cats. As suspected they were both bad. The back cat on the engine looked pristine inside so we left it alone. We ordered all of our parts from rockauto. New front and rear-most cats, exhaust and intake gaskets, serpentine belt, and one O2 sensor that was damaged when the insides of the front cat let go.
Installation was straight forward with no major issues. We also changed the plugs with brand new ones she had purchased but never had installed. The vehicle now runs fantastic and she is extremely happy with it.

Is it possible to slightly raise the Idle speed of our R32s?
And if so, how is it done?
Is there a procedure with Vagcom?

Well my 05 Touareg V6 is at VW waiting for a new tranny. It has approx 55,000 miles. The problem is, when i'm decreasing my speed say at 55 mph due to traffic or whatever, then begin to accelerate at approx 30mph, the engine revs slightly and the transmission kicks into gear very hard. VW test drove my VW and acknowledge that there is a serious problem with my tranny, but after 4 days, could not figure out why my tranny was doing this. So they are going to install a new tranny this week. I've already experience the hesitation problems and VW has attempted on fixing that too, but it still does it but i/wife have both have learned to live with it.

I have a new 2015 Subaru Forester and I noticed the following problem: When driving at a constant low speed, in the 20-30 MPH range, the car bucks/hesitates slightly off and on, while driving. At first I thought the engine was missing, but I noticed the RPM was at about 1000 RPM, very low. And a missing engine would cause a "check engine" warning.
So I think this is a combination of the CVT and the engine lugging. The CVT should move down a notch to a lower "gear" but it doesn't, so the engine is forced to operate at a problem speed. A normal transmission would downshift, I would think.
Can I do anything to solve this, other than manually shift to the low range?

My 2003 Camry makes a a grinding noise when the wheel is turned even slightly left. The noise is present at any speed, and is the same volume no matter what. I'm fairly certain its coming from the driver side front wheel. I changed that CV axle in January so hopefully that's not the issue.

I have an occasional issue when pressing the gas pedal while stopped or at low speed the car hesitates and slightly kicks. It doesn't seem to happen at high speeds. The auto mechanic I took it to said he is getting a read that it might be the thermostat. My temperature gauge has not moved above normal. The auto guy says they need to start with the thermostat and see where we are with the problem at hand afterward. This does not make sense to me. Maybe the electronic read is right and the thermostat needs replacing, but how can this affect my occasional hesitation problem?

I have posted several times about my 03 Ex and it's driveline vibes- mainly highway speed and when slightly on the gas... Took it to a local 4 wheel drive shop that specializes in lifts. They jacked it up and I ran the X up to highway speed with the rear in the air. It was amazing how rough it is, even at 55mph. I hardly feel it in the vehicle at that speed while driving.
Anyway, they felt the vibration but where it is coming from. They said pinion angle looked fine and since I have a retubed driveshaft and rebuilt rear, they ruled that out. The owner has an 04 with a 6 or 8" lift and 37's and seems to know about Excursions.
I then took it to the local Ford dealer and had the service manager drive it. He strongly feels it is gear mesh with the ring and pinion. I am not totally convinced as the rear is quiet, gear wise. For that matter, my slip yoke has quite a bit of torsional slop, likely as much as the backlash on the ring and pinion but the driveshaft shop said that it is acceptable.

I have a 2003 Ford Escort ZX2. Recently, I've begun to notice issues with the RPM. When I'm not actually giving it gas, such as idling or coasting in neutral, I notice that one of four things start happening:
1) the car stalls outright,
2) the RPM drops from 1000 to around 500 and stays,
3) drops to 500ish then recovers after a few seconds, or
4) acts normal.
Which one is completely random. I am getting OBD codes p0171 and p0420, which points towards either oxygen sensors or the catalytic converter. However, I've been told that it might be the idle air control valve too. Which seems more/less likely? I don't have a lot of money to commit to repairs at the moment, so I am leery of playing trial and error.

I've got an 02 Camry with the 2.4l 4, it's got a whistling sound from the engine that isn't ground-speed or engine-speed dependent, it's triggered by specific throttle positions...
Because of this, I'm 99.9% sure it's simply air whistling over the throttle plate at certain angles (my old 88 ford station wagon's throttle screamed like a banshee when the cruise was set to 78kph on level ground) but I thought I'd ask in here in case any variable cam timing system or something that can cause similar noises.
The noise has been there as long as I can remember, but it made me wonder the other day when I had my windows down (been trying to limit AC use to save fuel unless it's *really* hot) and heard it reflecting off passing traffic; Wouldn't Toyota have noticed something that loud and done something about it in an engine design?

My 2006 PT Cruiser Touring Edition has a lot of squeaks from the front. Most noticeable at low speed going over speed bumps or potholes. My mechanic has checked front end and says noise is coming from rear cradle bushings and wants to drop rear cradle and inspect/lube bushings. Also says sway links are dry and recommends lubing these as well. Everything else is OK. Estimate is $100-$150. Other than the annoying squeaking (which I can live with) is there any other reason (safety/mechanical) to get this done?

My 07 LS460L has a pulsating idle. Approximately 2-300 rpm from 1200 rpm. It has, while in Drive dropped to 4-500 rpm then will recover. Also it has dropped so low that I thought it was going to stall but then it jumped to 1500 rpm fluctuated then recovered. I had it in at Sewell 2 weeks ago and they couldn't find the reason until a week later they said the throttle body was dirty. The tech cleaned it and I still have the same issue. No performance issues just idle? I have two LS430' 01&06 and neither one of them have this issue. The fuel rails were replaced under recall.

Have lost all fan speed control in both hot/A/C settings. Resistor pack checks out okay. Fan runs when voltage applied direct to it. Have +12v into r-pack. Fuse (inside) okay. The fan speed is controlled by adding resistance between Fan & ground. Thermal cutout part on R-pack okay. How do I test out the relay (in engine compartment), and could that even be the prob? Will look at dash switch next. Any schematic for this?

I have an 2005 F350 4x4, 6.0 with 294000 miles. My gauges recently started to shut down on there own and then recover. at any speed with no effect on the engine. When I park and shut the system down, they all come back on again at start-up. However, they shut down again and then operate at will as I drive. What's causing this?

I am the new owner (one week) of a VW Phaeton 3.2 V6 (2003). Tonight, after I put a sudden brake, the car accelerates slowly at first and then, after increases speed, goes well. Going in reverse it's ok, no problem.

My old truck's engine starts accelerating when I put it into gear. This is a 1973 Ford F-100, 3 on the column. I just had it in for work (had let it sit for a long time and had noticed a gas leak at the carb so I had it hauled in). The mechanic cleaned the carb (carb kit), fixed the leaks, changed fuel filters, plugs, wires. It seemed okay when I picked it up.
The next time I drove it, it started fine, idled fine, but when I put it into gear the engine began accelerating on its own. As I was driving it would do that intermittently and I had to keep kicking the gas pedal to get it to let off. The engine had done that once before when idling before I found the gas leak and before I took it to the mechanic. What is sticking or why?
