Chevrolet :: 2001 - Popping And Whining Sound

Nov 21, 2012

2001 Chevy impala with 2 problems. First, I get a whining sound that lasts about 1 min after the car has run for about 5 min, and as soon as the noise starts the engine temp goes up (high, but not in the red). It's not the accessory belt, revving the engine doesn't do anything and either does putting the car in neutral. I can get the tone to slightly change by turning the a/c on and off, but it doesn't stop the whining. It sounds like it is coming from the radiator fan and when I tapped the one fan the other day, the noise stopped, not sure if it was just a coincidence. Second, I get a popping noise coming from the front of the car when accelerating. I don't think it's the shocks because I compressed the shocks by bouncing on the hood and got no noise.

Chevrolet :: Popcorn Popping Sound Under The Hood At 50 MPH And Above

At 50 MPH and above, a popcorn popping sound occurs - varying fast and slow - only began after car was serviced. Can't find the source. Checked since it started and still nothing found - but new thermostat was installed, new gauge panel (due to car appearing to overheat but it was a faulty gauge), new wiper arms installed (thought they were the cause), running board rubber re-attached (thought it was flapping) - none of these were the cause because it is still occurring.

Chevrolet - 1500 :: 1995 - Whining Sound At 50 Mph

I've got a noise that has me puzzled on my 1995 Chevy C1500 (2wd). I hear a mid to high pitched noise when I'm driving at between 45 and 55 mph (70-90 kph). It varies in pitch depending on the speed I'm going, starts at around 45 and goes away above 55, and also tends to go away if I lift off the gas. The sound occurs in any gear, but always at the same speeds. My leading suspect is the differential, but I haven't ruled out anything yet. I pulled the differential plug and the fluid isn't very dark.

Chevrolet - Montecarlo :: 2003 - Popping Sound Only When Turning Right

I found a steal of a car for my son, a 2003 Monte Carlo SS. The car had been hit slightly in the LF corner. The car needed front brakes, so I bought a package off Ebay that had rotors, pads, and wheel hubs. I replaced the LF wheel hub when we did the brakes and kept one for a spare since the RF felt good.

Shortly after replacing these parts, the car started to make a popping sound when you would turn right. The popping sound is much like an exhaust pipe dragging on the ground. We checked to make sure the was no contact with moving parts. After reading several forums, we decided to replace the LF hub with the spare we had. This did not fix the situation, so we put the first replacement LF hub onto the RF. Still no fix.

After this we decided to take the car to a empty parking lot and drove in circles trying to find the source of the noise. We discovered that the noise would go away if the car was put into neutral. We were still unable to locate the source of the noise.

So I decided to jack the car up and put it in gear and turn right. The noise did not occur with no load on the tires. However the u-joints on the axles were making some excessive noise, so I put in a new set of axles. Again this did not fix the noise. Now thinking the source must be in the differential.

Well two days after putting in new axles, the transmission went out. This will surely fix it, right? Well the mechanic that fixed the transmission said the pump had gone out, and it appeared the differential was creating shavings that caused this situation. GREAT WE FOUND THE SOURCE. Not so much!

Car still makes noise while turning right after replacing the transmission. I have driven myself crazy trying to find the source of this noise including riding in the engine compartment while my father drove in circles in the local high school parking lot.

Chevrolet - S-10 :: Crank And Just Make Whining Sound When Key Turned

I'm in a 93 S10/Sonoma.

I'd been having a problem for a while where if I turned the key, sometimes it would feel like it was trying to crank and would instead just make a whining sound which died down when I stopped trying to start the car. Inevitably, though, I could give it a second go and it would start up just fine.

Eventually I realized that if I barely turned the key to a very specific point it would start up consistently with zero problems. I called my brother, who advised me it was probably the ignition failing me and if I had a workaround I might be able to go for a while but I'd need to get it fixed eventually.

Well, this morning after spending ten minutes trying to find the "sweet spot" I gave up and decided the ignition must have done as he'd forecast and given up. I was under the impression a locksmith could do this so I called around, but they informed me if the key was turning, it wasn't the ignition at all and was something internal.

So is it the ignition, do you think? The key still turns just as it ought, it just goes NRRRRrrrrrr...rrr... instead of starting.

Chevrolet - Silverado1500 :: 2000 - Buzzing / Whining Sound Coming From Under The Hood

I recently replaced the fuel pump and afterward started noticing a buzzing/whining sound coming from under the hood. The noise goes away when I remove the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator and after the car has been driven for 1/2 to 1 hour. Sometimes it comes back, sometime not, but it always is there at a cold start. Had the shop take a look and they said the fuel pump is ok and recommended replacing the fuel pressure regulator. I did but that but it did not solve it. I suppose I should check the fuel pressure. 2000 Silverado 5.3L ...

Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Whining Sound But Not From Engine?

Over the past week I've observed a whining sound. I've been trying to narrow it down and here is what I've got:

- It is speed related but not RPM related.
- It is not louder at any particular speed.
- It happens when coasting in neutral (manual transmission).
- The volume does not change based on whether turning or going straight.
- The pitch is mid/high, very similar to the whining from a too tight timing belt. And it gets lower and higher based on speed.
- As best as I can tell it is coming from the front driver's side.
- It is intermittent, although it's there more often than not.
- No uneven wear on front tires or other signs.

It's worth mentioning that another sound came soon after this whining. It's a sort of fluttering click sound. It becomes a lot louder when accelerating uphill. This also is speed related but not RPM related, in that the flutter/click increases in speed as the vehicle increases in speed.

Ford - Taurus :: 2001 - Popping Sound From Muffler?

01 taurus pushrod motor. Vulcan? Today it started idling poor/ stalling. I can hear a popping sound from muffler. Almost like a coffee percolator. No codes. Motor seems quiet. No odd noises or metallic sounds. Friend says burnt valve? Last week or so I thought I heard exhaust drone on acceleration. Almost like a hole in muffler. But muffler is good, same as exhaust pipes. The perc sound is not rhythmic. Sort of uneven. Like a chugging/ puffing sound. Intake manifold leak? Upper/lower? This year does not have IMT. Intake tuner device?

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: Won't Turn Over / Whining Sound When Tried To Start

I have a 2001 Santa Fe with around 140,000 miles on it. I've had my share of problems with it, but the last couple of years have been fine until this morning. I tried to start it and appeared to have full battery power, but it would not turn over. Instead of a clicking sound, it was more of a whining sound it made while it tried to start. I took the battery into AutoZone and they told me it was dead, so I bought a new one and replaced it after cleaning the connector cables. The same thing is still happening with the new battery. I've attempted to jump it as well.

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: Whining Sound That Increases / Decreases With Speed

I have a problem with my 2006 Sante Fe. When driving (at all speeds) my SF has developed a "cyclical", repetitive whining sound in the engine compartment that directly corresponds with the speed of the car. The "revolutions" of the sound are slow at slow speeds and very high pitched and fast at high speeds.

It happens at all speeds, with or without throttle being applied. I do NOT hear it when the car is in park or in neutral and I rev the engine so it has something to do with the rotations of the wheels/axles/drive shaft/gears or something that rotates in synch with how fast the car is going. I still hear it when coasting.

We recently put on new tires a few months back and I thought maybe it was just the sound of the new tread on the road but now I am almost positive this sound is coming from somewhere in the engine compartment. It is possible that it is coming from under the car but the problem is a can't confirm that because I only hear the sound when the car is moving. So far, it's just an annoying sound, it does not affect the performance of the car.

Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Timing Belt Tightness And Whining Sound

I recently replaced the timing belt, tensioner, and roller in my car. Today I became concerned that I hadn't tightened the tensioner properly so I did a quick check (it was). I also noticed the timing belt felt a bit loose, so I tightened it to what I thought was about 1/4" deflection with 5lbs pressure—not what that feels like in that tight space.

When I started the car there was a noticeable whining sound. Before I changed the belt there was a slight whining sound (but there was no whine after I changed the belt). So I loosened the belt a bit and there's now a slight whine. I feel like the whine shouldn't be there but it's hard for me to imagine that the belt should be any looser since I can move it 1/4" inch without much effort.

So, should I be tightening the belt to the point where the whining is gone, or is a slight whine ok?

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: Drive Shaft Failure / Whining Sound

So I own a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS 2.7. I am the fourth owner and currently there is 168k miles on the vehicle. I purchased the car with around 110k miles on it and have had it for nearly 5 years now.

Aside from general maintenance I have never had a single issue with it, until last weekend. On the way back home from a road trip I began to notice a whining sound, and then very abruptly the car shook and I lost control of the vehicle and had to pull over on the shoulder. I was on the highway and was VERY fortunate to not have gotten into an accident.

After inspecting carefully I discovered my 4WD Drive Shaft was literally hanging by a thread. The knuckles were ruined, and in the process my Transfer Case and Exhaust System were all severely damaged.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2001 - Whining Sound Coming From Engine

I've had this car for awhile now and it's always had this weird whining sound coming from the engine.I had the transmission serviced thinking maybe that was the sound and it wasn't. I've taken off the serpentine belt and spun all the pulleys. I can't figure it out, I'm thinking maybe timing chain but I'm not sure.

Elantra XD (2001-06) :: Knocking Or Whining Sound That Corresponded In Speed / Pitch To RPMs

After 10-15 minutes of driving my car tonight I noticed a knocking sound and maybe a sort of whining sound that corresponded in speed/pitch to the RPMs. No warning lights, codes, temperature gauge ok, performance was fine.

I looked under the hood and I'm pretty sure it's coming from the left side of the engine (where all of the belts are). I didn't have time to isolate it further.

After 2 hours I started it up again and the noise was gone. As I drove I listened closely and after about 10 minutes I started hearing it again. It was quieter than before, but I assume it would have continued to get louder had I not arrived at home and turned off the car.

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: Whining Almost Electric Motor Like Sound Coming From Rear Of Engine

I have an 03 Santa Fe, 2.7 l AWD. Recently I've begun to notice a whining almost electric motor like sound coming from the rear of the engine. It get more noticeable the longer the trip. The weird thing is that it seems to respond to throttle input more than speed. If I'm cruising at say 65 I can ease off the throttle, reapply the throttle enough to increase RPM but not speed and hear it. I've had the differential, brakes, bearings checked. My mechanic has had it in the air 4 times and has spent atleast 4 hours on two occasions trying to find it. He can hear it. My thoughts are that it could be the Fuel Pump, or the exhaust.

The clutch is fine but the trans is hanging up, anyways i have a granny gear transmission a buddy of mine gave me out of an 85 f150 that had the inline 6 if i take the bell housing off of my transmission can i put the internal slave cylinder on that transmission? Chevrolet - Malibumaxx :: Whining With Acceleration And Deceleration In 1st And 2nd Gear

I have a 2006 Chevy Malibu Max with automatic transmission, 129,000 miles. It's got a higher pitched whine that increases as I accelerate between first and second gear and between 2nd and 3rd. I can't hear once it's in 3rd gear. It sounds like an RC car or early video game race car sound. I can hear it winding down as I slow down through those gears. It's also audible when the car is in neutral or park, but not then the brakes are fully applied. I can't really hear it in reverse.

I bought it used with 65,000 miles on it. I'm not sure what was done before that as far as maintenance/preventative maint. I did get a transmission flush three years ago (don't know the mileage at that time). I don't think this will impact things in any way, but I just changed the spark plugs and wires a few weeks ago.

It has a rough/shuddery idle (but doesn't feel like it's goign to stall out) and seems to be riding rougher than usual lately. I feel it more in the seat/overall car vibrations than through the steering wheel.

Transmission Oil Pump? Planetary Gear Set? I was really hoping to not have an expensive repair, but I am fearing the worst.

Chevrolet - Equinox :: Whining Noise When Running With Air Conditioner On

My 2013 Chevy Equinox has 30,000 miles. When the car runs with the air conditioner on, it has a whining sound that goes off when the A.C. is turned off. I have taken it to my local dealer several times, and they say that the whining is normal for this vehicle. They also say that Chevrolet will not authorize a repair under warranty for this problem.

Impala - Chevrolet :: 2009 - Whining Noise Coming From Under Hood

So I have a 2008 Chevy Impala LS that hasn't given me any real problems. I had some battery troubles recently that were the result of me leaving the parking/security lights on for 10 consecutive hours, but overnight-charged the battery and was good-to-go after that. But it seems like RIGHT after that was when the whining noise started.

It seems to be related to my power-steering system. I know this since the whining seems to pick up with acceleration and turning. However, I checked my power steering fluid and it did not appear to be depleted at all. I did notice, however, that it seems to be a light greenish color...which from doing a google search, I've gotten the impression that it's probably not supposed to be that color.

What exactly is going on here?
