Camry :: Flapping Noise In Engine When Car Started

What makes a flapping noise in the engine when car is started/restarted? It sounds like a dull slam of a fabric covered lid, slamming shut!

View 3 Replies2007 Camry LE 186K. Car is making a noise like a plastic panel is flapping when driving 55 mph. Sounds like its from the center or console area.
The splash pan is secured with all fasteners, the aluminum heat shield was remove due to looseness. The wheel well seems solid and the front grill panels are tight.
I have moved the heater/air controls to different setting but no change on the noise. I have ramps but that limits what I can look at.
I have a 1998 Camry V6 with 165000 miles. I had brake pads and rotors replaced on all four tires. Two days later, I noticed a flapping/knocking noise apparently coming from the rear of the car. It only happens after the car as been driving for 5-10 minutes. The noise increases in frequency as the speed of the vehicle increases and is unaffected by braking or bumps and gets louder the longer the car is driven. I took the car back and they re-checked all the brake installations and said everything was fine and the noise was nothing to worry about (of course I had to convince them that there really was a noise). They also said they inspected the tires and didn't find anything wrong. I have jacked the car up and looked under all tires and don't see anything close to the tires that could be hitting them. It sounds like a strip of rubber hitting a metal pan. I see no loose plastic guards or mudflaps. The tires were all replaced less than 2 years ago and they have been rotated regularly and visually appear to be in good shape.
View 4 RepliesI picked up my car from the dealer today and driving home once I hit over 70 on the interstate the car started making a slight noise. It sounds like a piece of cardboard sort of flapping in the wind. It feels like it is coming from the engine bay around the level of the accelerator. What it might be?
I popped the hood and nothing was left inside that I can see. The only thing that seems loose is just the induction scoop. It looks like on the side there should be a clamp or something to hold it in place, but it moves freely. I can't find any good stock shots to see if there should be something.
I have an 03 Camry that has a clicking clacking engine noise when started, is sounds like a lifter or a valve; however after letting it idle for about 20mins, the noise disappears and it runs fine. So far i've done.
1. Flush Engine
2. Change oil and even used a very thick oil 20w 50.
Here is a video clip of what it sounds like with the noise and without the noise towards the end of the video. YouTube
Is it even the engine? Is it a blown head gasket? Is the engine done?
I got a 2007 Camry 2.4 l4 engine under the hood and its didn't start this until we had a garage change the oil never did this when toyota changed it. Mostly when the engine is cold started there is a little bit of a rattling noise it will make until engine is warmed up and once its warmed up at times it will still sound kinda bad when it runs at normal engine temperature but this mostly occurs on cold starts and didn't start doing it until a regular garage changed the oil this never occurred when toyota dealership changed it
I don't know what kind of oil that was used in it last at that oil change but it started that about a week or so after that. Car currently has about 133,000 something miles on it ... Its not that loud of a noise but its noticeable when all doors are closed.
I've noticed a few times now on my wife's car when I am driving it around 80 mph there is a some-time flapping or low-thumping noise from underneath the car. It only happens up around 80 mph. My wife says it's a feature to let me know to slow down . I originally thought maybe I had a plastic bag trapped under the car or some loose trim but looking underneath hasn't turned up anything. The only other thing I can think of is maybe it's just a strange aerodynamic quirk of the car that causes the noise.
View 5 RepliesToday I was at a light, stopped with brakes on. Heard weird loud flapping noise like when you put a playing card against spokes of a bicycle. Smoke appeared. No warning lights so I thought it was the car ahead of me - especially since the noise stopped when I pressed the gas. Drove 11 miles home, 9 of them uphill. No problems. Parked for about an hour. Then drove about 4 miles and was again stopped, again the noise (not so loud this time) and some smoke from under the hood. I was right next to a gas station, pulled in and very nice attendant checked fluids, etc. No problems found. He spilled a bit of antifreeze when checking the radiator level. I then drove straight to a Honda dealer. They have proclaimed it a broken radiator on the basis of a brief exam and a sighting of a bit of antifreeze. No leaks anyplace, car was no overheating, the vehicle has less than 50 thousand miles and is regularly maintained.
View 9 RepliesI just purchased my new Elantra 2 weeks ago. A few days later, just after I started it first thing in the morning, it began making a loud flapping noise (seemed to be coming from under the hood). It's been doing it every morning since. The dealership said they couldn't hear anything unusual (after keeping it overnight, then starting it up first thing the next morning).
View 1 RepliesThought it was another AC flap that is playing up but it was the small plastic flap next to the tyre that was giving me the headache.
Still, could not find the rattle at the rear which i think is caused by the underfloor storage compartments. Thats for another day.
I have a 2012 and just passed 14,500 miles.
I was driving home recently and heard a flapping type noise on the drivers side and thought something was stuck in my undercarriage or even in my tire and the wind was causing it to flap. I pulled over to check, saw nothing, so I kept driving home and stopped into my local Toyota and they didn't see anything loose or out of place. We went on a test drive and of course, there was no noise.
Later that night as I was driving, it started in the middle of my drive, I parked and when I drove again, no noise and I haven't heard it since; this was 3 days ago. I thought it was just at highway speeds, but I've heard it at different speeds.
My exlporer heat and A/C system has been making "ticking or flapping" noises for sometime. So, to make it stop I would turn fan to full blast and it would stop and the heater would function fine after that. Last week we hasd a warm spell and I switched to A/C (going through the same process to stop the noise). All was well until I tried to switch back to heat after the warm spell, and now I get nothing but cold air. The noise will only stop when I turn the temp dial to the cold side, but either way, all I get is cold air. Is this something I can fix, and if not what am I looking at for repair cost? I'm freezing!!!
View 3 Replies2012 accent bought in February, 57k miles.
Wheel barring already went out?
The front driver wheel does his flapping noise, it sounds as if there's a rock in my tire. No tred problem, no cv boot problems.
It is finally getting hot here in Texas and I turned my AC on Max the other day. It has a sound like there is something flapping around inside the duct work or something like that. Like a flag whipping in the wind. I tried feet, defrost open and closed loop etc and the noise is always there. It is really annoying when it is on high speed. Also, I did not notice the noise during the winter. Is there some where that leaves or something like that can get into that might cause this type of noise. The truck is a 2010 FX4.
View 3 RepliesI recently turned on my AC and heard a "flapping" noise from the cabin air circulating fan blade. After a minute or so, noise gradually subsided. Two days later, I turned on the AC and a smell most foul filled the cabin. Being a farm boy, I know the odor of ripe dead animal and I'm guessing a mouse. Is there any reasonable way to gain access to the area where the fan is so I can attempt a clean-up?
View 4 RepliesI have a 2004 F150 XLT super crew cab. I bought this used with around 99,000 miles on it. There is a plastic / rubber two piece cowl panel between the hood and the windshield. There are little rubber type material tabs on the outer edge between the fender and the cowl panel. They are there on my truck but they have started to come off. I have noticed that when I get up to roughly 45MPH and over I get a flapping wind noise on the drivers side of the vehicle only. I thought it was that little rubber flap because it came off completely and the noise got a little worse. I super glued it back on but the noise is still the same.
View 4 RepliesI had to remove the battery to get at the DS parking bulb. When I reconnected the battery and started the engine the idle did not go way up like normal, but I thought it was because I had removed power from the computer and it needed to relearn my driving. Well the idle was so low it was difficult keeping it running and it did not improve.
View 9 RepliesI have a 2002 Camry L4 and when ever the car is started it makes a knocking noise. The engine turns off unless I press the gas pedal. This all started after I changed the valve cover gasket myself. I had to change the gasket because the oil had started leaking. I changed the gasket after about 6 months because I wasn't sure what the problem was. The car has about 120,000 miles on it and I have never had this engine rebuilt.
View 14 RepliesSo our 2012 with 55k miles started knocking and now it's really bad. Started about 5-10k miles ago.
View 14 RepliesMy 2010 Xle camry, only has 10.030 miles, today engine light turn on and SRC too, when i started engine shake few, then 2 light turn on together, 2 months ago happens some similar but i thought Was battery. And I changed , immediately two light turn off.
View 1 RepliesWhat's the deal with making fuel filters difficult to replace? My engine has started sputtering (cutting in and out) and I began to wonder if it was the fuel filter. So, I investigated how to change it. Apparently it's part of the fuel pump and located in the fuel tank -- good grief.
A filter is there to catch stuff, and if it catches stuff it can get clogged, if it gets clogged it has to be replaced. It appears they put in the filter to catch stuff but assumed it never would.
