How do you replace an oxygen sensor in a 1997 Cadillac Deville? Where is it located?

View 10 RepliesI have a 96 Cadillac Deville Sedan. Last year, I had problems with the heat and A/C working intermittently. Then both crapped out. I went the summer without A/C...waiting for winter. Have gone all winter with no heat, which is not a huge problem, since I live in Florida. However, I'm planning on taking this car on a 1600 mile journey to Maine. So on Thursday, my bf installed a new HVAC fan motor. Or, yeah, whatever you call them. It worked and the car produced heat. I had a parade to go to Thursday night, so I drove the car there and it was fine. On my way home, the car was revving, like I was driving a lawn mower. Then, while I was still driving at a low speed, the mph went to 0. During the 10 mile drive home, which included interstate, the mph returned and the car acted normal. Then the mph went to 0 again. The speed sensor failure light came on, along with the check engine light.
I thought maybe while replacing the fan motor, the bf might have unhooked the speed sensor. This makes sense to me. But the bf checks and can't find anything obvious.
Today, when I first start driving the car, it again sounds like a lawnmower. The rmp is into the 3000 and 4000 range, while I am driving (approx) 15 mph. If I step on the gas, the car lurches forward, then returns to lawnmower status. The mph is showing 0. The instant mpg is also remaining at 0. The fuel range is showing numbers, but they are not correct, since there are 14 gals of gas in the car and the range is at like 85 miles and declining. I get around 20 mpg. So that's not an accurate range. After a few miles, the car stops over-revving and sounds normal. On the interstate entrance ramp, the mph started working, and worked for several minutes, then reverted back to 0.
So, to summarize. The check engine light is on all the time. The speed sensor failure light comes on in the beginning. The struggling lawnmower act lasts for the first few miles. Lurching if I step on the gas. Then, it might drive normally. The mph stays at 0. Every once in a while, the mph will start working, then stop again. What could have happened during this fan motor repair to have caused this? Or is this just a huge coincidence?
I have just replaced an almost new oxygen sensor on my 2000 Grand Am. After about 40 miles, the check engine light came back on again. I have not had a chance to check it, but I assume it is the oxygen sensor again. What am I missing?
View 1 RepliesWhere the fuse that controls oxygen sensors on a 1997 pontiac grand prix 3.8L engine? i read some where it is under hood fuse panel, but what is the marking for the fuse?
View 2 RepliesAt least this is how I did it after a P0133 code.
The back ground on my truck (see sig) is that I am the second owner (my former neighbor was the first) and it has 293K miles on it at the time of this post. The truck is bone stock FWIW.
I searched the internet and couldn't find a good step by step replacement write up. The front oxygen sensor on the passenger side is hard to get to so here is what I did:
Jacked the truck up and placed jack stands under it. Removed the front passenger tire and the plastic wheel well liner.
Tools needed for this part are a 7/32 socket and a trim tool remover (for the plastic push in fittings).
There are 5 screws and 3 or 4 plastic push retainers (don't know actual term) to remove.
Because of the location of the sensor I had to remove the transmission dipstick tube. *If you do this have a pan or bucket under this area as you are going to lose fluid* the dipstick tube is held place by an 8mm bolt about the middle of the exhaust manifold. Unscrew it and with a little pressure the tube will pop up and out, and so will some fluid.
Wheel well liner out and dipstick tube pulled out of the way.
The connector where you will disconnect the old 02 sensor is tucked up behind the engine block and is kind of hard to get to. A little time and patience and you can get it separated.
From underneath the truck I cut the end off of the old 02 sensor (because the closed end of the wrench wouldn't fit over it) and used a 7/8 box wrench to unloosen the sensor a little at a time until I could get it out with my fingers.
I put the new 02 sensor in finger tight and then tightened it down with small turns of the 7/8 wrench until tight
The cord on the new sensor is longer than the factory one so once reconnected I used zip ties to keep the slack up and away from the hot parts.
New 02 sensor installed and dip stick tube back in place. Note the attachment approx 1/2 down the dipstick tube. It is the 8mm bolt I previously mentioned.
Wheel well back in place. Truck lowered back to the ground.
I am having an issue with my car not starting due to the alarm i see you can bypass but i was wondering if i have an aftermarket alarm installed would that take care of the problem.
View 9 RepliesAt times when going to start our 1998 Caddy you can turn the key and ..... nothing happens, no clicking ... nothing. Everything else works but it is like you are not even turning the key. Is there a weak spot on these cars?
I am familiar with solenoid/starter issues but this seems a bit different for some reason.
I have a 1992 Cadillac DeVille with 25,000 miles on it. It’s never been driven in the winter and garaged when not being driven.Last year, it was running rough, so I took it to the dealer. They changed the spark plugs and wires. There seemed to be some improvement after that. After about 500 miles, it started to rn rough again. I returned to the dealer who changed the spark plugs again and replaced two of the fuel injectors. Still no improvement. A few hundred miles later, I took it to a local mechanic. He replaced four more fuel injectors and there seemed to be some improvement. After another few hundred miles, the engine started to run rough again, the fuel dropped down from about 20 mpg to 10 mpg, and it stalls at traffic stops or if the brake is applied. After 30 minutes of idling it will use 5 gallons of gas. There are no strange odors or visible leakage.
View 2 RepliesRecently my check engine light came on on my 98 Cadillac Deville. I went to Autozone and got a free engine diagnostic and was given a printout of a bunch of stuff I did not understand, the technician told me it was just an issue with the light, and it could be fixed with unhooking the black end of my battery for 10m. Just a little bit ago, i popped the hood, and touched the black end of the battery to see how i could unplug it. When i touched it I heard a click and now there is no power to my car. Every time i jiggle the negative end I hear a click from the right side of the engine and nothing happens. I did not even unhook the battery.
View 1 Replies04 deville. Trans is stuck in gear. Or seems to be. Car is off. Crank car, starts fine so gear selector/neutral safety switch is ok? Car is running, shifter is in park, take foot off brake amd car moves forward. Since its in gear. Apply brake, shift to neu or rev and car will still move forward. The 2000 caddys had an external neutral safety switch. The 04 cars have an internal switch. If that has an bearing on discussion. Could trans shifter linkage inside trans be messed up? So spool valve in trams is always in gear but shift selector works properly so car can be started?
View 2 RepliesI recently had a lot of repair done to my 2003 cadillac: new bearings in both front wheels, new power steering line, rotors turned, cv axel replaced.I also bought new Michelin "Symmetry" tires as I am taking a long trip.
I had Toyo tires with some wear and had them rotated at another place other than my mechanic's. After that I noticed the humming noise in the front; it sounds like it is coming fron the driver's side and is most noticeable when I drive 35 or 40 mph. My mechanic said he checked everything carefully and couldn't figure out the problem.
This noise just recently started, when i go about 65mph I can hear a chirping noise from under my hood. It only happens when i go at fast speeds though.

View 3 Replies1995 Cadillac DeVille Base 8Cyl 4.9L - Transmissions & Drivetrains check vehicle soon, error code p039 TCC engagement Torque Converter Clutch. I looked up what error code p039. How to correct the problem.
The problem I think is the torqure converter sensor or pcm = Powertrain Control Module / prom = Programable Read Only Memory is not working or sending the single to the computer.
The trans does not slip and drives great. Is there a chip or module I can purchase if so where. How can I find out how to repair myself if possible.
I have a 1991 Cadillac DeVille sedan with about 150,000 miles, I purchased this at an estate sale. As soon as I bought it, I replaced the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, serpentine belt, power steering pulley, and of course changed the oil and oil filter. I was getting about 14-15 mpg (compared to 12 when I picked the car up). And the car ran good, not like brand new, but good. About a couple of weeks ago (as it started getting hot) the car would start chugging, backfiring and stalling, only after about 20 miles of driving (my commute to work is 35 mi), so I would spend the other 15 miles driving with four-ways on going at most 30 mph. But, on the drive home (at 2 am) I would have no issues. So, I got sick of that fun and changed the PVC valve and fuel filter (which looked like the original) and with every fill-up in addition to using 93 octane gas (as directed) and fuel injector cleaner, the gas mileage is around 10 mpg and the chugging persists after heating up. Two things to note,
1) the fans for the radiator do not turn on at all, and
2) the catalytic converter doesn't smell like rotten eggs.
We recently purchased a used 99 Cadillac Deville.after buying it we took it to the shop for an oil change, we were told that we had a slight oil leak and slight transmission leak but that both were small snd nothing to worry about, thinking we had a decent running vehicle we took the car out of town 2 times we still didn't have any issues until about a week later we were running errands and the car alerted us that the coolant was overheated and to idle engine...my question is what could be the cause etc?? We did buy coolant because afterward we noticed it was low we filled it up and we r still having this problem.
View 19 RepliesI have a 1993 Cadillac Deville and the Fuel Data panel will not display except once in a while it will for a minute then it'll go blank again. The Electronic Climate Control panel displays and works just fine. I have no trouble with the a/c or heat at all.
View 1 RepliesI have a 1999 Cadillac Deville. when you start the car, it must warm up and then a signal appears on the dashboard that says to depress brake pedal and shift into gear. HOWEVER, after the message appears and I depress the brake pedal, it still will not shift. Now I have the world's largest paperweight sitting in my driveway, because I cannot even get it to a repair facility. What is wrong, How do I fix it?
View 1 RepliesI have a 92 Deville. I drove a pretty good distance today and on the way home stopped at the store and left the car on in the parking lot. I got in and the engine died as I tried to pull out of the lot. When I try to start the car all the lights come on but nothing happens, no clicks or anything. Lights don't even go dim. Could this be the alternator? I know that the starter suddenly dying won't cut off the engine like that. Everything seemed fine before idk what gave out?

View 1 RepliesI have a 2003 Cadillac Deville with about 120,000 miles on it. The SES light came on and I had some maintenance done at STS. The light came back on the night I picked it up. I took it back the next day, they said it was related to the transmission and they do not do transmission repairs. They cleared the light and said if it came back on they could flush the transmission and maybe that would take care of the problem or they suggested I should take it to a transmission repair shop. The error codes are p0741 & p1860. Once in a while at the beginning of a drive I experience a sluggish acceleration, it does not last long( a second or 2) and then runs fine for the remainder of the drive.
