Bmw - 528 :: White Smoke From Exhaust Intermittently
Mar 31, 2012
Our family recently purchased a used BMW 528i (40K miles). Perhaps this is nothing, but I just wanted to make sure anyway.
Today, at around 2AM (maybe 50 degrees C), within minutes of starting the car, we drove into a McDonald's Drive Thru. While I was ordering and pressing on the brakes, I noticed continuous discharge of white smoke/vapor from the exhaust. For maybe a minute this continued. When I moved the car a little bit to get closer to the window, the smoke stopped. But when I stopped again to receive my order, I saw the white smoke/vapor again. My friends who were with me told me that it might just be water vapor, but the hypochondriac in me wants to make sure this isn't a blown head gasket or anything else I've read about in the internet. BTW When I drove away from the Drive Thru and continued driving, I stopped seeing the white smoke/vapor.
I'm as clueless you can get with cars. Do I need to be worried?

2001 Oldsmobile Alero, 4cyl, purchased in March with around 150k miles.About a month and a half ago I topped off the coolant. 2-3 weeks ago I noticed the exhaust was intermittently throwing off white smoke. Not thick, opaque plumes or anything, but more like how your exhaust might look on a cold day. Being May though, I knew the temperature was not responsible.
This white smoke would occur intermittently and usually stop after driving for a a little bit. Since the white smoke was not constant and the coolant levels seemed to be okay I figured maybe it was something with the EVAP system or the fuel mixture. On a hunch and as a matter of maintenance I put in new Oxygen sensors a few days ago. The next day my coolant light went off again. Since then I've put radiator stop-leak in the coolant and some STP "gasket rejuvenator" in the oil.
My theory: if the head gasket is indeed cracked, it's a very small crack--small enough so that after the engine warms up a bit the gasket expands essentially sealing the crack. This would explain the intermittent nature of the white smoke and and slowness of coolant leak. Are there any other tell-tale signs I should look for with a bad gasket, if this indeed that case? I saw in the store some stuff similar to stop-leak specifically designed for sealing head gaskets that involved draining the radiator, dumping this stuff in and running the engine for a bit, draining it out, and letting the car sit for a day before putting new coolant in. If the head gasket is the issue would the combination of stop leak.

I just purchased an '06 V10 a couple weeks ago. Today, I was about 11miles into my 15mile commute when I noticed A LOT of white smoke coming out of the back. The only time I'd seen smoke like that before was just before my old Ford Explorer caught fire. I immediately pulled over and took a look. White smoke (maybe steam?) was billowing out of the exhaust.
I say steam, because it didn't have the strong diesel smell I would've expected. I decided I couldn't sit there parked by the highway, so I got back in the car, checked warning lights and pulled out. Within 1/2 mile, it was gone. Nothing. No more problems the rest of the way. What this might have been? I have 1100 miles on the vehicle and this is the first time it's happened.

I have a 64 Olds Cutlass. I drive it once a week or so. That means it sits most of the time. Lately it's been very damp and rainy. I've noticed that when I start the Olds up there is white smoke coming from the exhaust. This lasts about a minute or until the car warms up and I start driving. Then it disappears. Is this just condensation burning off or, I hope not, a blown head gasket? How can I tell the difference?

I started my car up this morning for work and I noticed it sounded a little different almost like a little more gurgle then usual. I walked behind the car and saw white smoke coming from the left exhaust. The smoke wasn't incredibly white like a cloud but was definitely noticeable i think it smelt like gas or oil I'm not sure (stuffy nose got me some allergies) . After about 10 ish seconds everything was back to normal. What could this be if anything? Hopefully nothing tho.

Literally drove the car yesterday for three hours nothing was happening. Went to turn it on today when it idols a little constant white smoke comes out of the exhaust! Then when I'm driving and my turbo boost lets out a big cloud of smoke comes out. What could this be? Also just filled my car up with gas from empty today if that matters

I was on 285 tonight in Atlanta and had a very hard time seeing because of all the white smoke. I thought some old GM car or Ford was billowing white smoke through the exhaust.
When I finally caught up to what was the cause I was shocked to see it was a Passat. A 2014 at that! 1.8 Turbo. I followed her into a Kroger Grocery store parking lot and parked as close as I could. She was unaware that her car was smoking out of her exhaust. I told her she needed to bring her car to the dealer asap and have them look at it. The white smoke was coming out of her exhaust even after she turned the motor off. She had no clue. I would say she was in her middle 70's age wise. It think she talked to me because I was in a Passat that "looked" like her car. Interesting to me to say the least. What could this possibly be?

OKay, so it's not that cold out here but my exhaust still puts out white smoke so it looks like it is winter time. I didn't blow some seals on my Turbo. And how to fix it?

I noticed that the RC was blowing out a lot of white smoke from the exhaust. I peeked underneath the car and i hear what it sounds like droplets of water falling down. and then i go inside the car and i see an engine light(yellow triangle). I honestly don't know what it could be wrong right now.
The car only has 12k Miles.
Here is the video......

It was a rainy day and I was going to drive my GS300 2006. After starting the car and let it warm up for a bit I notice a decent amount of white smoke from my exhaust which at first I thought was due to the rainy weather (abt 28celcius in Thailand) but it doesn't feel normal. Shortly after I see it coming from the engine so I opened the hood to check. I also went for a short ride around the village and the white smoke still continues from both engine and exhaust...
Its on the right side in between the engine and the battery...
There is also something like a little boil from that joint...

I drove through some hills and inclines before reaching my destination. When i pulled over the lobby of the clubhouse, the guard noticed the smoke my car was emitting. I checked the exhaust and it did emit smoke all the way up to the parking area.
I parked for a good 1-2 hours. When i drove it again for around 10-15 mins up and down inclines, it was not emitting smoke.
Turned the engine off and parked for a good 30 minutes as i waited for someone. I drove back to the clubhouse and the car stood on idle for 10 mins.
As i took off, i looked at my side mirrors and noticed that it started emitting the same white/bluish smoke. This is my first brand new diesel car so I'm not quite familiar with how the appearance of smoke should be. My car is :
- 2015 purchased Tiguan 2.0 TDI 4motion, 140 Ps
- I have only driven it for 2000 km
- has been with me for just 30 days
- running on Shell V-Power diesel
The dealer said Tiguans really do emit smoke like this regularly. So I'm hoping this is not a symptom of any major problem.

What are the repercussions of my turbo leaking, and how do I fix it? Could this cause white smoke to blow out of my exhaust when i take off after the car idles for about 10 minutes, the smoke goes away, but if I let it idle again for about 10 minutes it blows out more smoke. Also the oil consumption is really high, obviously due to the oil leak, is the turbo bad, do I need to change it?

I recently noticed a lot of smoke coming out of exhaust pipe. Checkout video : [URL] .....
Video was taken after I drove for about 40mins. Then parked (engine still running). Then immediately recorded the video. I also noticed smoke while I'm driving too. I checked yesterday and saw some water (not a lot, just drops) dripping down the pipe.
Weather is a bit cold these days. Here in WA, its usually in the range of 35-40 degree. Is that normal?

I have 04 santa fe with the 3.5 l engine that just started blowing white smoke out the exhaust. I didn't see any smoke when I test drove it and all. but previous owner said that a/c compressor blown which i replaced etc (but found out it was the connector that was needing to be replaced so still have old comp when doing the a/c compressor i saw it has been leaking from valve cover gasket (front can't really see the rear).
I changed oil on it about a week after i got it looked good then. about 3 weeks after that it needed some oil about a qt low, then just last month i noticed a little bit of smoke nothing big and there was barely any oil in it. (oil light came on)... did another oil change and put 4 quarts of oil in it.. now it is smoking more and more smells like burning oil and something else (oil was real low again put 2 qts in to take it just over half). when i check the oil off the dip stick it does not appear to have any color change (not milky or anything).
I am thinking it could have a bad head gasket too (besides the valve cover). BTW it runs good except for the gas mileage kinda dropping a little bit. very strong doesn't not appear to have any pressure drop in cylinders or miss firing. NO codes showing up. So i am at a loss on what it is. (figure head gasket would case pressure loss). I did notice it was low on coolant but has not over heated (put in about 2 quarts of 50/50 coolant). What it is and why it appears to be going thru so much oil.

I recently bought a accent, changed the oil then upon starting it back up it just pours out white smoke from the exhaust. i might have put a little too much oil in, would that cause the issue? It didn't happen before the oil change either.

I have a 2004 Camry that I purchased used 8/2006 with 20,400 miles on it. It now has 83,000 miles on it. I’ve changed the oil and filter every 3,000 miles, and I’ve never had to add oil between changes. I’ve also replaced the antifreeze on time, using 5 yr/150,000 mile antifreeze. The only time I’ve had to add antifreeze was 4/23/13, to top off the overflow reservoir. Saturday I did my annual tune-up (plugs, air filter and fuel injector cleaner added to the gas). Plugs looked normal. Last week the car sat for several days, no issue on start-up.
Yesterday afternoon I started the car after it sat for two days. A huge amount of white smoke came out of the exhaust. It ran fine. I mentioned this to my wife, she said that about two weeks ago she saw a lot of black smoke (she thinks black) when she started the car and that it ran rough for about the first 4 miles and then started running ok. It has the 2AZFE engine, and I’ve read a TSB (TSB 1507) “It has been reported that stripped head bolt threads have been found on some of these engines during tear down. When the two rear head bolts lose their clamping ability they allow coolant to seep out at the rear of the cylinder head.” Could that be the problem?
