Bmw - 328 :: Replacing Suspension Rack?
Apr 28, 2011
A few weeks ago I drove my car straight into a curb and killed the steering column. The car was not drivable. After a discussion with BMW service rep, I obtained a copy of an addendum to the steering and alignment manual that indicates if certain parts were damaged to the suspension then the steering rack MUST be replaced -- despite the fact that there is absolutely NO indication that the part is damaged. My problem is that my insurance company is refusing to pay for the part since it shows no signs of damage and BMW will revoke the warranty on the steering column and attempted to remove themselves from any liability if the steering rack did fail after suspension repairs. I can't consciously drive my car knowing that there is a possibility that the steering rack could go out at any time so I am forced to pay the 2k. Is this fair? Can an auto manufacturer force their customers into a catch-22 like this? It is my understanding that BMW and Mercedes are the only automakers that do this. Not even Ferrari.

My main concern with this replacement job( I am not doing it), is that the R rack is different that the standard golf rack. is that so?
I have a very good friend and excellent mechanic who said "...it's the part number it gives me." which makes me nervous. I don't want a "less sporty" steering feel.
so are the racks the same? what part number it should be I am having a hard time finding it.

Our 2000 Subaru Outback has just over 200k. We want a vehicle that is safe, but do not want to put a lot of money into this. At the last service the dealership said the left ball joint boot and power steering rack boots need to be replaced and the rear differential bushings are broken or loose. All of this would be > $1000 to repair. They said that the ball joint could get dirty and fail catastrophically and be a safety issue. Is that right or will the steering start to feel rough beforehand? Can we drive it safely?

Whenever I would make a tight, low-speed right turn you could hear two or three solid thumps from the steering rack/front suspension area. I figured this wasn't good for the car only having 600 miles on it at the time, so I took it over to the dealership, and they told me this...
I know a little bit about cars, but what that means. The service advisor told me that it was a "rubber boot or bushing nearly the steering rack that was sagging." I don't really see how that relates to them tearing the glovebox and dash apart...but they clipped something in, I can't hear it anymore and apparently the part is on order.

I bought my first X a month or so ago and I am looking into replacing the suspension. Truck has around 250K on it and I doubt the suspension has ever been touched. I won't be towing often, though will be towing some and want a smooth ride. I was thinking v fronts and b backs but its a clean slate. I am not looking to lift it a lot just wanting a nice smooth, comfortable ride.

Is there any way to replace the stock nav system with something that is easier to use and more up to date and works? I did upgrade the disc and it's still a pain to use. My Iphone does a much better job, is easier to use. Also can upgrading the stock suspension on a 2003 SC 430, I got it a couple of months ago with 24000 miles but would like better handling but would like to keep the ride decent.

I made a thread in the F150 section but maybe it should have went here. Anyhow I'm replacing the front shocks on my 99 150, and well the bushing was completely seized up to the bolt on the bottom of the shock and I ended up breaking the one side of the shock mount off with it. I can't see any easy way of getting it off, I fear I might run into the same problem with the other side.
Would it be ok to just bolt the new shock back on, sans the forward mount? If its just bolted through the rear bolt hole will there be too much play? I really don't feel like replacing the whole lower suspension arm on this beater truck, and I dont think my welding skills are up to that. I don't think my little stick welder even has enough heat.

I have a new question regarding my Touareg. Recently my roof rack broke, a latch on one side of one of the crossbars broke almost off. The part that the key goes into and pulls away to release its hold to the roof was broken when trying to force it closed after adjusting the rack's position. Can this piece be replaced or does the rack have to be replaced?

I've been using roof racks for years and despite the towers being padded, I always end up with some scratches and or 'outlines' of the tower pad left behind. On my new car I wanted to avoid this so I made up some pads from paint protection film. They're practically invisible when the rack is off the car. I was really happy with the way they turned out so I'm thinking of producing them in quantity but would like some feedback first. I use a Yak rack but the pads would be made large enough to accommodate just about any of the popular roof systems available.

I bought my treg a couple of months ago and it came with the stock roof rack. I never thought anything of it, since I barely use it. But the other day I wanted to see what it looks like if i separated the rack. It looks like it takes a key to unlock it, i thought it was the cars ignition key but it's not. How I could unlock it or get a key to do this?

Mine is leaking badly from both tie rod ends. I am guessing the seals got nicked up when the tie rods were replaced. Is there anyway to replace just the seals? I would really like to avoid replacing the rack.

Is that unusual?

Was picking up some pumpkins with my wife on Sat. Loading the rear up. Pop from overhead and the tailgate comes crashing down on my head. Seems that one of the struts let go.
Im also having issues with the little plastic bits on the seat rails flying off. they catch my pant leg and get pulled off. Im also having some wicked wind noise from the rack. almost a drumming noise. such are the joys of owning a 50,000$ VW.

I took my 2010 Camry LE for its 70K service to the mechanic to find out there is a leak in the rack and pinion. The tech said that this might happen due the wear and tear as the seal might get eroded or so. He showed me the leaking part and interestingly I never found any oil leak on the garage floor until the day. Anyways I just got the basic powertrain warranty on my camera so will have to take the repair costs on my own. They suggested replacing the rack and pinion with a quote of $1.4K (out the door which includes tax, labor and wheel alignment etc). Not sure if its a rip off being a novice in the auto field. Now my question is, is there a way to get this leak sealed or should i go for the replacement of rack and pinion? Also is it dangerous to drive around in the car which has this leak?

Would a Yakima 44" Fairing fit on the OEM roof rack? And are there any simple mods to get rid of the wind noise from the roof rack?

I'm going to replace tie rods assembly. I have a question about inner tie rod boot. How do you attach it to the steering rack? No room there, horrible access.

I bought a brand new 07 Legacy 2.5i sedan at the end of 2006. At 1500 miles the steering was problematic, took it in to the dealer, and by the time they were done, they replaced the entire power steering system. They said the problem was with the power steering rack, which they replaced. I asked if this new part was from the same supplier, so could also be defective, and apparently it is. I am rather alarmed, this is the 1st brand new car I have purchased in 20+ years.

I'd noticed an oil leak drivers side and upon investigation it appears the rack has developed a leak. I lifted the car on the vehicle lift and when I did noticed oil pouring out of the boot surrounding the steering linkage coming from the steering rack. With the tires dropped the full amount this created a tilt of said boot allowing the oil that had filled the boot to drain out. My conclusion is the rack has developed a leak with the boot being full of oil.
I did a "steering rack" search but nothing of value appeared.
