Windstar :: Rear Lights Are Not Working
Jun 14, 2008
My rear lights are not working. (brake, signal, hazard, reverse). I get power to the bulbs... showing 12V on 2 and 2V on one for each side. Fuses are good, and front lights working (signal, hazard, daytime running, full lights). Also, sometimes the gas gauge works, sometimes doesn't.
Also, power door lock will work on the first attempt only if I leave it for awhile... if i continuously keep pressing the unlock, if seems like the power drops each time to a point where all i hear is the FEM clicking... same if i do the lock part... every time i press it, the motor gets quieter and quieter. One time the locks worked and I was able to get all the doors to open... then the back lights all worked... and then the next day, it quit again... just like before.

The rear tail lights on my truck have been out for a while now. I wasn't doing much driving at night so it wasn't much of a bother but the new job is getting me home a little later and having to drive with my hazards on is getting old fast.
My radio wasn't working either and I disconnected it a while back hoping maybe it had something to do with my lights shorting out but no luck. It remains disconnected. Just in the past few days my front running lights have went out as well.
I've tested all fuses multiple times (and replaced a couple of them) and checked and replaced bulbs. My brake lights, headlights, dash lights and hazards all work fine. I have the trailer light hook up on the rear bumper and disconnected it at the wiring harness as well hoping it was the problem but it wasn't.

The vehicle in question is a 2001 Windstar. The OBD Data Link Connection is not working properly. When I plug in my scanner it DOES power up and will read the ABS info, but will not read anything else.
The scanner is new, and a pretty good one for a DIYer, and I've tried it in other vehicles. I've also tried another reader that also didn't work on this van. So I don't think it's the scanner.
My Haynes manual has no info on how to wire a DLC or how to repair/replace one. How can I fix this?

Have a 99 passat and none of the pass rear lights are working right now. I replace all 3 bulbs and they still wont light up. I changed the bulbs earlier today and as far as I could tell the bulb assembly was connected properly. is there a fuse for each side, or some common problem I can look for?

so I have a 2010 Camry and I'm 99% certain the rear defroster doesn't work. I came from a 2000 Camry where, upon pressing the rear defrost button, the rear window would clear up within like 5 minutes (literally-- that thing was fast), but my 2010 Camry doesn't do that.
I drove for about 15 minutes last night and saw no change whatsoever. The orange LED lights up when I press the button (and stays lit) for the rear defroster, but I'm not seeing any results.
Is there a fuse I should check? the orange LED comes on and stays on when I press that button, but I'm pretty sure nothing's happening. This is the only problem thing I've ever noticed that's wrong with my car.

I recently had a Car alarm/remote start installed in my van and it seems that every now and then my ABS Light and Parking Brake Light come on while driving but if i shut the van off the lights all go out and don't come back on for a few days then it's the same thing. I also changed the front brakes right before i had the install done so i don't know maybe i did something or maybe it was the shop i am thinking it was the shop as they seemed pretty incompetent and could not to this day (3 weeks/19hrs shop time (8hr+3hr+8hrs)) get the alarm to function right.

We just bought a 2003 Windstar SE, the door ajar indicator is on on the dash all the time but the courtesy/dome lights don't come on with any of the doors open. The lights will come on manually with the headlight switch? I am pretty sure these are controlled by the GEM module.

I'm having electronic issues with my windstar. Tail lights stay on after shutting off. All dome and interior lights stay on when ignition is on.key fob doesn't lock or unlock. Gas gauge reads empty. WHEN IT RAINS, IT ALL WORKS NORMAL. What can I do? Today, now, not starting. Turn key, not even a click. Theft light flashing. Got power and starter is good. is there a reset?

I have a Ford Windstar 1999 . My license plate lights are both out. I remove the inside panel of the back door, there is a connector between the license lamps and the rest of the car electrical system. I disconnect it. I go turn on the lamps at the dash board, I then reconnect the connector to the license plate lamps at the rear door… and they work! I go back to the dash and switch the lamps (controls side +rear lamps and license) OFF and then immediately back ON, and the license plate lamps stay OUT. All the others lamps on the fuse circuit work fine. When lamps are lit, shaking the wiring harness has no effect. What is happening and where? This is very strange!

I have a 1998 windstar with a 3.8. I took my daughter Christmas shopping and noticed the car did not want to shift out of first gear. I shifted it manually to second and then DRIVE and that worked until I stopped at a light. I took off in DRIVE and the car did shift to second and third on its own but it shifted late and hard. Also, the speedometer quit working and the overdive light on the shifter just turned on by itself and then went out. By the time we got home, the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light was on. All these symptoms happened in a relatively short amount of time (5 miles). I suspect something electrical but am not sure. Is there a speed sensor fuse on these cars?

The lower rear brake lights on my Venture aren't working, while the high light at the top of the door still works. I've replaced both circuit boards on the driver and passenger side, and all of the bulbs are fine. What I might have missed along the way?

2001 Ford Windstar, select tail lights will not function. All lights serviced by Fuse #7 have ceased to function (left rear turn lamp, right backup lamp, right stop lamp, right rear park lamp, right license lamp, left license lamp, and left backup lamp). Checked all bulbs and replaced any that were questionable but to no avail.

2002 Windstar A/C problem. Blows cold in the rear but not the front. Blend door actuator in the front is operating properly. Compressor cycles on and off but not excessively. When temp levers in full warm air blows to floor but it is not warm. Compressor runs even when the A/C on/off switch is in the off position. Indicator light is off but compressor still runs. Condensate puddles on floor in rear but none in front under vehicle.

1998 Windstar Limited. I have no vacuum to my rear Auxiliary Unit. I am considering buying a hand vacuum pump. However, I never used one. Is there a video available.

After not starting my car following several days of extreme cold, my battery died a couple of weeks ago, and after boosting the battery, I noticed a couple of electrical accessories (power windows, rear defrost, rear brake lights) are no longer working. I was told by a mechanic at the local Wal-Mart that it was possibly the main relay, which I replaced at the dealer, but that did not fix the issue. I've checked the individual fuses for these accessories, and all of them are OK. How to troubleshoot this?

I have a 2001 F150. Front brakes replaced a few months ago. Last night, I realized my rear brake lights weren't working. I'm not sure how long they've been out or if it's related to the bigger problem.
While testing the brake lights by pressing the brake pedal, the pedal seemed to give out and sink lower. While driving the brakes worked but only when I pushed the pedal all the way in. Eventually the ABS light came on and stayed on.

2001 Ford Windstar rear auxiliary unit will not blow hot or cold air. The front system works fine with very cold or very hot air as needed. The system has been in this state for the past four years.Last month I had a local shop evacuate the refrigerant and then I replaced the following A/C components (compressor, front orifice tube, rear expansion valve, receiver dryer, and condenser). The shop then recharged the system and the front blows ice cold air...amazing! Unfortunately the rear system just doesn't want to blow any air, hot or cold. To date I have completed the following checks:
Relays
- Front cabin relays #3 and #6 were swapped with no change to front system.
- Rear unit relays make a clicking sound when either front or rear control panels set blower motor speed.
-- I swapped out with front and rear cabin blower motor relays with no change to front blower motor.
Engine Compartment - Both 40A fuses were checked (117 & 120).They are supposed to be 40A fuses but my box had 50A in both places. It had been like this for years with both systems working fine up until the rear unit ceased working.(NOTE: maybe this is coincidence but when I changed these from 50A to 40A my son noticed that some of the rear tail lights stopped working. in fact all of them associated with fuse #7 located in the passenger cabin.)
Fuses - all related fuses were checked and are fine.As noted above the distribution box fuses were changed from 50A to 40A with no detrimental effect on the front system working.
Front Control Panel
- Heat and air work fine (blower and temp controls)
- Front control panel appears to change rear unit temperature setting but only one of blend door actuators adjust when changing temperature setting
-- The one closest to the blower motor does not function. The one that directs air to floor or ceiling functions properly.
-- Shouldn't they move together based on the temp setting?
- Front control panel blower motor settings only result in hearing a clicking noise for each setting.
- Setting front control panel to REAR CTRL allows rear control panel to function.
Rear Control Panel
- Temperature settings - same result as front control panel with blend door actuators.
- Blower motor settings - same result as front control panel.
Rear Auxiliary Unit
- Expansion valve makes a hissing sound on A/C or Defrost settings.
- Blower motor was removed and benched tested for operation.
-- Electrical connection looks fine and seats snug.
