105K miles, developing a groaning noise when turning steering wheel during low speeds and stopped. Can feel slightly through steering column. No other problems, no clunking or any grinding noises, just "groaning" sound on initial movement. Fluid is full. View 6 RepliesI have a weird issue - I think. I recently purchased a 2005 Volvo XC90 V8 with about 150k miles. The car runs great and is really in good shape. The one issue I have is that sometimes the car wont start. There is just a clicking noise when turning the key. This only seems to happen immediately after the car is stopped. If I wait 10-15 minutes the car starts up just fine.
View 11 RepliesI have a Volvo XC90 2.4 D5 2004. But none of the buttons on the steering wheel are working - not volume for radio, not cruise control.
Symptoms are following:
* buttons on the steering wheel are lighted up
* buttons on the steering wheel are not working, none of them
* horn is not working
I have checked internet over and over and have 3 conclusions, what might be faulty:
1) steeling wheel lining/wire/connections - but in this case they would work periodically and the buttons would not be lighted up;
2) steering wheel module (swm) - in this case also the turn signals would not work and also the headlight would be faulty;
3) clockspring - in this case the airbag light should light up in dashboard.
We just bought a 2011 XC90 in Jan 2011. About a week ago we noticed that when you are using the brake and turning a corner there is a weird noise coming from the front end. It only does it at low speeds. It doesn't do it if you turn and you are not pressing the brakes. You can also feel it in the brake pedal as well. I hope this makes sense. We love this car and really don't want to regret that we bought it. Just really confused on how a 2 month old vehicle can be already making a weird noise.

The car recently got most commonly problematic suspension parts replaced to no cure to the noise.
Mechanic said that it is the steering rack but can't tell what exactly is making the noise.
I hear a noise when I turn my steering wheel. It happens when I am stopped or rolling. It sounds like a giant, stretching rubber band. Or maybe someone rubbing two balloons together. What it might be?
View 4 RepliesOne my F350 with 175,000 miles on it, at low speeds when turning the steering wheel it seems as if it has two places during use that it rubs or has an oblong spot in it. I have 285 tires on it and have for years.
Kind of like if you were turning a shaft in a seal and it rubbed or was rough. It makes a faint, muffled, barely audible grinding noise or feel. I have a lift and level of about 4" and 285s for years. This just started in the last 5 months or so.
I'm driving a 2000 Chevy S-10 pickup, 5 spd manual, with about 133k miles on. Truck has been great for the 11 years I've owned it. I've had this problem for a while, and for some reason am only getting around to it now, as I've never directly asked a mechanic to fix it or diagnose it. I think because it didn't seem urgent, and out of fear I'll get the runaround on what it actually is.
But now, what was once just a sort of "groaning sound" when I turned the wheel, has now actually turned into some tightness in the wheel itself -- especially if the car is cold or hasn't moved in a while. Here's a video clip of the sound: [URL]...
I suspect it's a problem with the power steering fluid system. I've been parallel parking for years, and don't know if that's what's had an impact.
2002 regal LS 3800 V6 . Steering makes a groaning sound in either direction, even when not moving.
View 7 RepliesHad my 2004 Phaeton in to take care of some smaller interior issues under warranty. One of them was that the steering column makes a groaning noise when it is being retracted. Service advisor told me that the Phaeton technician (who is also the shop foreman - Jim Ellis VW Marietta) told him that this is common with Phaetons and there isn't a realistic fix for it. I've read the post already about the felt strip wearing down, but I'm wondering how many of you have the steering column groaning noise when it's being retracted when the car is shut off? I'm trying to decide whether to push the issue with the dealer or just live with it.
View 12 RepliesMy friend with an 07 with about 109k miles on it now has started getting a "groaning" noise whenever the wheel is cut hard to the right or left, either sitting still or rolling. A local repair shop (not the dealer) checked it out and said there was some "stuff that needed to be lubricated". Not trusting this opinion he went to a Toyota dealer where he was getting new brake pads installed on all 4 corners (no Lexus dealer in the city where he lives), they diagnosed the car as needing 4 new struts and a new balljoint.
If in fact he does need the struts and balljoint, I am thinking chances are there will be a bunch more suspension stuff that should really be done at the same time when everything is apart anyway - perhaps bushings, endlinks, etc?
Is he better off sticking with the OEM strut replacements or should he go aftermarket? He's not looking to slam the car or anything, and is more of a ride comfort guy than handling enthusiast.

Pulled into my driveway last night with the power steering working intermittently for last 5 minute leg of my trip. Woke up this morning with no power steering and sqealing noise coming from engine.
No fluid leak on driveway. Drove to dealer with no power steering. Very hard to turn wheel - even while moving.
Dealer checked and said it was not a fluid issue and that they thought a screw might have fallen out and needed to take apart the rear of the engine (a 5-6 hour job) just to diagnose the problem.
A screw from the steering column in the rear engine?
I just recently replaced the inner and outer tie rods an got a 4 wheel alignment on my 2005 camry le and now whenever you turn the steering wheel all the way lleft or right, it makes a loud groaning noise, and it sounds like something is scraping kinda? What this could be an how to solve this problem? It is not low on power steering fluid...!

Rotors & pads
Replaced axle shaft
Oil & new air filter
Replaced steering wheel pump #1 - with new liquids
Replaced steering wheel pump #1 with #2
Replaced steering wheel pump #2 with #3
Supposedly checked the rack & pinion
New hoses for the steering wheel pump
Alternator replaced
All front, right and rear engine mounts have been replaced
I am about to literally come out of my skin with the subtle vibration that comes through the steering wheel, seat and floor on the drivers side. When I put my hand on the shifter I don't feel the vibration nor when riding on the passengers side. I have to stay that the car sounds like an old Singer sewing machine too, not the smooth engine sound that I had before all the repair work. There is also a very slight lag when starting off and a grown that comes from under the dash to the right of the steering wheel when in reverse and turning. My regular volvo mechanic says that the car is worn but I should keep it anyway.
You can hear the clunky, groaning noise around 8 and 11 seconds when I turn the steering wheel, making a tight u-turn in an alley way.
What can it be..? I hope it has something to do with my tires since I'm getting new ones today. The current ones are pretty bald.

View 2 RepliesSo my car has been at the dealer this week for the 4th day. I have a whining/whirring noise from the rear of the car at cruising speeds of 70mph that goes away with a little throttle and comes back when coasting or at enough throttle to maintain speed. Car must be warmed up to hear it. I know this has been documented on the forum a few times with some getting "it is normal" responses while other have had the diff replaced. They are still diagnosing this but I am not expecting much. I did have the 30k service about 5k miles ago.
Second issue is a creaking noise from steering when stopped or a parking lot speeds. Mostly heard in quarter turns of the wheel. Sounds like it is coming from the column but not really audible from outside. This one the dealer says is normal. Manager says a new MKVII GYI does the same. I haven't verified this yet.
Last, my RNS-315 intermittently does crazy things with my iPhone 6 while listening to music through Bluetooth: Sometimes it will freeze up but I can change to radio and sometimes it will play music through a phone call. Meaning the phone icon is up as if I were on a call with music playing but I can't hang up! I think they are ordering a new head unit.
Sometimes, when I take off from a red light or stop sign, my car makes a thump. This feels as if it is under the car, not a transmission shift noise. It would seem to me that it has to do with exhaust or fuel???? I am guessing.
