I have a '99 Volvo V70 XC AWD that is making a high pitched whine that sounds kind of like a siren at times. Usually goes away if I'm driving at high speed on the highway. It's more pronounced during in-town driving on acceleration/deceleration. Turbo?
View 3 RepliesWe were driving last weekend in a heavy rain storm when our 2004 XC70 started making a loud siren noise. The noise increased with acceleration. We pulled off the road, turned the car off. When restarted the sound was gone, but then returned again when driving in heavy rain. Any clues as to what is causing this noise and if it needs attention?
View 21 RepliesI just wrapped up a full day's worth of tear down/reassembly chasing an oil leak at the turbo pedestal. while I had the turbo out I replaced the pedestal with a non-ebpv pedestal and replaced the outlet with a high flow outlet. I also removed the stock exhaust and replaced it with a 4" Turbo Back from MRPB. Once I got everything put back together I hit the highway to check out the new exhaust.
To my horror I started to hear a high pitched airhorn-like sound while accelerating. It sounds a lot like an old police siren... I'm wondering if this sounds like a turbo or simply a boost leak. I obviously had everything taken apart so a boost leak seems likely (still original boots with 191,000 miles). I've ordered new boots from RiffRaff but wanted to make sure it didn't sound like an exploding turbo and that I could safely drive it until I can fix the old boots.

My mother's 09 Corolla XLE just started making this high pitched noise.. It makes this noise every other day, then it makes a loud pop sound and goes back to normal..
With only 1,800 miles on my 2016 Sonata Limited, the brakes make a high-pitched noise when applied and backing up. I noticed yesterday the noise has also started as I brake for red lights.

It's most noticeable when making left turns but can sometimes be heard when going straight or making right turns.. I'm thinking it might be the metal tab/wear sensor on the brake pads rubbing on the brake rotor but not sure, haven't looked at it yet? It doesn't turn out to be the wear sensor?
View 1 RepliesI noticed my truck makes a high pitched whining noise. It does it at idle and while acceleration up to 40 mph or so. The pitch of the wine increases with RPM'S. It is not the cold start whine issue I have researched on YouTube.
It is in the cold or warmth. No difference. It's always there. My 2012 6.2 did not sound like this at all. I have crawled under the truck and it appears like it is coming from the transmission.
my 1992 960 wagon with 332K miles today started making a moaning noise when making a significant turn at low speed. At first it seemed to be only when I was accelerating but if that was true, it now is doing it at any low-speed big turn. Tonight, turning around in the driveway, it added what I call juddering during the turn. So naturally I am concerned.If it is something as minor as power steering fluid I might trust a local gas station to fill it up, but probably not any more than that. (There used to be a dealer about 45" away, but they seem to be gone now, and the closest one is hours away. I am 250 miles and one week away from my own trusted mechanic, so I hope it is something like fluid!).I haven't noticed any puddles on the driveway where it is parked, but I suppose it could leak out only when the engine is on and the car is moving.
View 4 RepliesSo, first, I need to tell that my car was just turned away from the only mechanic that is a "volvo mechanic" in the region because he said it grumbled and shook too much and it was too much of a liability.
There is only one thing I am concerned about, because it has been grumbling and shaking since I bought it five years ago and it hasn't gotten worse (so why worry!)
This car is a 1991 Volvo 740 sedan with 250,000 miles, a 4-cylinder gas engine and rear-wheel drive.
I have a siren sound coming from the front end, but only sometimes.
When I first start moving forward, I hear a "whooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPP!!!!" (sounds like a siren) for about 50-75 feet while I am going about 25-30 MPH. It only happens when I first start rolling forward when I first turn the car on from sitting for a while (3 or more hours). If I come to a stop, I don't hear it. If I park and run in somewhere and come back soon, I don't hear it.
I have been hearing a small "whoosh whoosh whoosh" sound coming from the front end that gets faster the faster I am traveling, and I don't know if that is related.
I own a 2004 Volvo S60 2.5T AWD. I have noticed that usually when I am driving and it starts to rain heavily, there is a loud siren sound coming from the engine area. This sound stays till it doesn't stop to rain. Also, if I don't step on the accelerator, the sound goes away. I have taken it to the dealership a couple of times but haven't been able to replicate the sound.
View 18 RepliesThe T/O bearing makes a high pitch squeal until you put light pressure on clutch then it will go away. Does this thing have a preload on bearing at all times or should there be free play like in the old days??
Another thing that has me wondering is when I push clutch all the way in it actually puts a load on the engine. Having T/O bearing so bad it puts a load on the engine?
I think my setup may be unique in that I have an XM commander, and Christian at Enfig made a special cable so that I have power connectors to the CD changer and my XM commander unit. Christian did a great job with this.
My dilemma is that there is a high pitched noise coming through the XM when the engine is running. It is not loud, and is not as audible at lower volume, but with my hearing problems, it is louder to me than to others.
The noise is not there when the car is not started. I guess there is no filter running the power to the changer (I am guessing), and now my XM commander box. I would not even know what to do regarding a filter or where it should go. The CD still plays clear with no noise. I have not connected an IPOD yet to the X3, but since the power to the CD and the XM commander is coming from the car battery, I figured that was the culprit.
Also, if I did not need the additional audio inputs, the XM roady I had in my center console via FM transmitter had more volume and more bass than my XM commander via X3. The XM roady did not sound good at all via the X3, and the XM commander was clearly better via X3 interface.

View 14 RepliesI have a high pitched noise coming from my car's navigation DVD. If I eject the DVD, the noise goes away. It starts up again when I put the DVD back in. Sometimes it doesn't make any noise, but it's typically on the whole time the car is on. When I stop the car, it continues for a little bit, which makes me think that it has something to do with the DVD rubbing against something.
A few months ago, I would get sporadic errors about the disc that would go away if I ejected and reinserted the disc. Other than the high pitched noise, it seems to be running fine now. The main question I have is whether replacing the disc has any hope to get rid of the noise or if I have a bigger problem and need to repair the system.
My car is making a sort of whining noise; it sounds like some sort of tire noise, but I checked the tires and don't see anything that could be problematic. My husband checked to see if anything was rubbing, and doesn't find anything. The car is quiet when it is not moving, and the noise gets somewhat louder and slightly higher-pitched as I accelerate. It almost seems like the noise changed on a different road surface, but again, I don't see anything different with the tires. The car has about 140-150,000 on it. The noise has only been noticeable for a couple of weeks. No other problems, no change in steering or handling. No incident that I can think of that could have been a catalyst.

Anyhow, the R is making a horrendous high pitched noise while coasting to a stop. This starts at just under 30 mph and is most pronounced in neutral. Accelerating in gear stops it. It is loud inside and louder outside and there is some rough "clanking" associated with it. My guess is a belt or bearing. It is coming from the front passenger side.
It's been pretty cold here and haven't started my R in 2 days at the most. I turned it over this morning and got this high pitched noise, like maybe a belt slipping or a bad bearing? The CEL flashed a few times then went away.
I couldn't stick around to check codes or inspect the bay, but what it might be?
I got in my car today and realized it was making a whining noise, kinda like the whine of a super charger, I don't hear it at idle but when I accelerate or rev it in neutral it gets louder and higher pitched. Friend had this problem in his Mercedes and he said it was a bad belt.
View 3 RepliesI'm having a strange, very high-pitched, noise that seems to be coming from my turbo or (possibly) somewhere else in the engine bay. It sounds very screechy, and it may be paranoia, but I believe it also may have a slight metallic sound to it.
It all started yesterday after changing the thermostat housing for the third time in 2 days (autozone sold me a faulty, warped, housing that leaked after install). During this repair the engine never overheated (it did however leak fluid and go a little low) and the main point for replacement was a stuck thermostat. After finally getting it fixed I took it for a test drive and noticed the horrid noise after hitting a good amount of boost (no gauge installed). The noise occurs when boosting and doesn't happen when spooling in the 3k-4k range. I had no hint of the noise before this.
There doesn't seem to be any drop in performance and it still pulls hard. Hoping this to be a loose exhaust connection or boost leak. May be spooling sound escaping.

I just noticed after I turn the car off the noise that is usually a hum is now a very high pitched noise, until that motor turns off.
View 1 RepliesI've noticed more and more that when I am braking that I heard a high pitched whining noise. Sort of this ultrasonic type sound. It will only go away if I depress the brake pedal very firmly after being completely stopped. However every so often the firm press will not stop the noise. I hear it more in the evening on the way home than in the morning to work, though I may not be paying attention as much in the A.M. due to morning brain fog.
I don't hear it any other time. I'm worried something is wrong with my inverter.
