Toyota - Scion :: 2009 XD - Rubbing Noise After Heavy Rain And Flooding
Aug 12, 2014
Not a car person! I have a 2009 Scion XD and we have recently had a lot of heavy rain, including flooding. My carpet got wet and I'm probably going to have to get that detailed if insurance will cover it, but I also noticed that I have a rubbing noise when I make sharp left turns - the sound seems to be coming from front right tire - and noticed it immediately after the heavy rain. Could they possibly be related? I recently had tires rotated, two worn out ones replaced, and belts changed. So, I do not want to take it in again because money is tight right now.

I have now twice had the ESC malfunction in my '09 Sonata (manual Transmission). The last two times I was on the freeway and we had a deluge coming down, the ESC light (dash) kept flashing on and off and it felt as though the ESC was engaging and disengaging rapidly. IN addition, the car started losing power where my speed dropped from 60-65 mph down to 45-50 mph even with my foot buried. As soon as the road dried up a little, it went back to normal. My mechanic checked it out but could not find anything in the codes or anything else wrong.

I have a 2009 Tiguan and after my car sat out overnight in a heavy rain I noticed a very odd thing today. Like normal the car smelled a little musty, something I've gotten used to after a rain. But I think I've found the cause. I hit my brakes hard to try to stop the squeakiness (another normal quirk after the rain) and I heard water running in the back seat. I looked back and saw water running on the floor beneath the passenger back seat. I hit the brakes hard again while looking back and watched it pour out of the other side beneath the plastic strip beneath the seat. I pulled over and looked and there are these little black channels underneath there where I believe the water came from. What are those and where is that water originating from? Is this normal?!

I have a persistent leak that causes the front passenger carpet to get wet after a heavy rain. Truck went to the dealer under warranty and they resealed the third brake light. Not sure if it ever fixed the problem, but I probably didn't check it as often as I should have after the repair. We've had a few good rain storms and the carpet is getting pretty wet. Since the truck is now out of warranty (2011 F150) I made a new gasket for the third brake light. I think it's pretty well sealed, so I'm thinking the leak is coming from somewhere else.

My XC70 makes a weird whistling type noise in heavy rains that last a long time. It doesn't do it in light rains, or rains that are heavier but don't flood roads or collect water on the shoulder or slow lanes, only the really heavy, hard to find the road type.
There are no warning lights when it happens, turning off everything, except the car and windshield wipers, doesn't work. Pulling off the road, works after about 30 seconds, but then we start again, and it continues. This is only happening during really heavy rains, is scary, and I don't have a clue what it's doing or why nor does my mechanic.

We have had a 2004 Volvo XC70 for two years now, problem-free. But recently we experienced a strange, new thing. We were driving in a very heavy rain in Maine (during the hurricane) and suddenly the engine began screaming...not at all like a loose belt or bad bearing, but really loud, seeming from right front. We stopped, no idots lights came on. Began again, soon the same thing. Stopped again, waited, then took off again, with rain lessening. No further problems the rest of the drive back to Vermont. But now, we occasionally have the screaming, only briefly and ONLY when it rains. It concerns us a bit.

I drive a 2008 Cobalt SS turbo. its been a good car and I haven't had any major problems with it aside from the small stuff.
Well for the past few months I've noticed that, whenever i drive in heavy rain or in snow etc I will get a loud Growling/whining noise from the transmission area. Now it will do it while in Neutral, 1st etc and when stopped it will go away. If I stop the car for a few moments, the noise goes away until I hit another puddle and then it comes back again.
I also feel a "knocking" in the shifter and I've noticed its vibrated really badly for awhile now.
the caveat to this is it ONLY does it when its wet outside. I've taken it to GM a few times, and even showed the service manager the issues when it was raining out and he said everything was fine. The car never did it when I first purchased it.
I should include that there are some aftermarket modifications on the car. Catless downpipe, new intercooler, lowering springs. stock exhaust and stock turbo.

I have a 2016 4 Motion 2.0T auto transmission with less than 9000 miles on it. During heavy rains or when I drive through "deep" puddles of standing water the car will start to make a rubbing noise. It seem to be from the front passenger side. It will fade away as I coast or slow down but on acceleration it because louder.
I've checked twice now to see if there was anything stuck in the wheel well or axel area. I've made sure the wheels are aired correctly, balanced and the lugs are TQ'd to spec. I can not come up with any info as to why it only happens in the rain.
There is no power drop and I can't feel any type of resistance while driving, the noise being made would be best described like a mud flap of small branch is stuck in the wheel well. At times on the high way it sounds like I'm riding on a rumble strip.
The only difference in the car since I bought it, is the engine now sounds deeper and I can hear a more defined idle, I chalked that up to it breaking in and haven't thought anything of it. The car is also completely stock.

I'm getting a rubbing type of noise when i'm turn right and it sounds like a rubbing noise perhaps its a wheel bearing? how easy/hard is that to change. The noise is most notable when I'm on the highway and I'm making a left lane change or if I'm coming or going on a off ramp (left).

I have a 2009 Toyota Camry with approx 124K miles on it (my daily commute isn't that great...). Lately I've noticed some vibrations or rubbing when I'm turning:
There is a constant rubbing/grinding noise when turning. It is more obvious when I turn right. It is definitely coming from the front tires. It does not sound like metal at all. Just like a rubbing noise, that causes a slight vibration up front.
When I'm driving straight, at a certain speed, I notice the vibration/rubbing sound, but it eventually blends in with the sound of the road. The ride isn't bumpy at all, so I don't think it's related to the struts. When I pull out of a parking place, turning left, it just feels "loose", if that makes any sense.
From what I've been reading, it seems to lean towards a bad wheel bearing, or CV issues. What the problem could be?

I have a 2003 BMW 525i. A couple of years ago, after a heavy rainstorm, I found water in the footwell of the backseat behind the driver’s seat. I took my car to a mechanic and he mentioned the door’s vapor barrier and the vapor barrier was resealed. Again a heavy rain storm, back to the mechanic and the vapor barrier was resealed. This has happened three times and I feel that there is a problem somewhere that has been overlooked by my mechanic. Normally, my car is garaged, but when out of town, my poor car is at the mercy of the weather.

Friend has '04 LS and he says that after a heavy rain, his LS will only go about 25 mph. Water is getting into something but where? This lasts for about 2 weeks and then all is OK. Water is finally evaporating, I assume, and problem goes away.

My car is suffering after being stood out in heavy rain - which there's been a lot of recently. When I go to unlock it there is no response and starting requires using the key to be turned left first. Keyless entry doesn't work. All electrics are dead until the car starts. When it's not raining everything's OK again.

My 1990 Honda Civic DX died in heavy rain. Diagnosis: Need new alternator. Got it. Car immediately started surging loudly whenever idling. Took it back to the shop. 3 mechanics huddled for 3 hours and couldn't figure out what was wrong. Quick fix: Deactivate IAC. They said I should be good for a couple of months. Took one 25-mph drive around the neighborhood. Car ran very rough; panel under steering wheel jolted loose. Made it home but now car won't start. Battery is fine. Wonderful Firestone manager is willing to look at car again. I'm broke after the alternator on top of paying the IRS in April and really want to keep my generally reliable car (only 255,000 miles), at least through the hot South Florida summer.

My '02 Impala makes a low moaning sound only in heavy rain and only if I am forced to drive through a large puddle. It first occurred a year ago after it had it's catalytic converter replaced due to the recall. The dealership mechanics checked their work and could find nothing. I tried spraying it with a garden hose under the car and under the hood while moving the throttle, still no sound. A local, and very thorough mechanic, heard the sound on a rainy day, but could find nothing. He could see nothing wrong, but thought that changing the serpentine belt would work. I replaced it with one from the dealer, but the sound still returns on rare occasions.

I have a Ford F150 Triton Super cab that once and a while it will not start after a heavy rain. When I turn the key it sounds like I am not getting a spark or gas. Besides that everything comes on normal.

Last May I had the distributor replaced in my 2001 Nissan Xterra. Since it was replaced my car has shut off while I am driving three different times, separated by weeks to months, and only in heavy rain storms. When the car does shutoff it takes up to 15 minutes until it will start up again. In each case, once the car restarted it did not shutoff again. I recently noticed a correlation to heavy rain because I did not have any problems all summer long ( I live in Oregon where it never rains in the summer) and then last week in a heavy rainstorm the car shutoff while I was waiting at a red light.
