My sister's 2010 corolla with 80k has a rattling. She sent a video. The oil level is fine. She had a belt squeak previously that she had fixed. My concern is a bad water pump. Is there a service bulletin on this that we can confirm?

He replaced the Water pump which had gone bad and the belt that shredded. The car ran beautifully for a week. Now there is this constant rattling sound coming from the water pump area. I attached a video with the sound. The sound will quicken as you accelerate. At cold start up it is usually not present then starts a couple of minutes in.

09 Toyota Corolla 75,000 miles. The garage where I have my car serviced 2X a year (oil change, minor tune-up at 7K miles) says the water pump is starting to leak. I haven't noticed anything, but the mechanics suggest a $600 repair. First, is this a common problem with my model car? Second, is the estimated fee appropriate? Is the car or am I in any immediate danger (how long can I put this off)? I've only been going to this garage for a couple years as my previous CarTalk-referred mechanic retired. I'm not sure whether to trust the new guys (no longer a single individual, but a group of mechanics in a middle class residential suburban neighborhood).

Over the last few days, I have noticed that there is a rattling noise occurring in the front passenger side of my car around the glove box area when the heat is on. As soon as the heat is turned off, the rattling goes away. It's a relatively faint, whistling noise. The rattling does not change loudness or frequency if I drive faster or slower. It only changes with the heater being on/off. I'm thinking it is either something with the car heater or maybe there is some debris stuck somewhere?
View 11 RepliesThe water pump on my 04 with 132k miles is rattling / wobbling (but surprisingly, not leaking). So I am going to replace the water pump, serpentine belt, and thermostat. The idler pulley seemed fine so I am wondering if I should replace it. What is the failure mode on the idler pulley and how will I know it is going bad without having to check it? Or should I just go ahead and replace it?
View 9 RepliesMy wife calls me yesterday and said she could hear a rattling noise from the engine area, but no other issues presented themselves. Later, I checked the engine compartment for the noise with the engine on and found that the noise was coming from the area of the engine water pump/idler pulley but i couldn't really narrow it much closer. The noise honestly sounds like bearings about to go out. I did see that behind the water pump pulley there was a small buildup of corrosion on the water pump, but no apparent leaks or wetness. The car has the original water pump and idler pulley with 140k. I plan on replacing the water pump, idler pulley and thermostat in the morning. Or is this overkill? I don't want to lose the engine nor do I want my wife to get stranded anywhere.
View 9 RepliesSo recently every time I start up the Rolla I get a chirping noise real quick and everything seems to run alright. I had my neighbor, a GM mechanic just look quick; and on the belt connected to the water pump looked like it was unusually worn on spots of it.
The car has about 27XXX miles on it ('10 Rolla S).
Going for an oil change next week, going to try and find out what's going on with this thing. I've seen other threads talking about the water pump causing the symptoms I've described at around the same amount of miles. Seems like a common part to fail on the car.

I'm also thinking that there isn't adequate lubrication near the gear assembly or the belt. Could there be a problem with the tension in the belt?

We took our vehicle to our local Goodyear because we had been hearing a noise and they discovered that the water pump had actually dislodged itself from the engine and was only being held on by the belt itself.
Also when I said the brakes weren't working they would work but since they were getting coolant on them they were making a horrible grinding noise. I took the vehicle to brake check to ensure the brakes were good because we have lifetime warranty and they assured us the brakes were fine.
It wasn't until we noticed the water pump that the Goodyear tech also showed us that the coolant had made it's way onto our braking system on the passenger side.
I had the timing belt and water pump replaced on my wife's 2001 Toyota Solara about 2.5 years/30,000 miles ago.
Recently I have been told by a different mechanic, other than the one who performed the original timing belt/water pump service. That water pump looked as if it had been "taken apart and glued back together". Also the same mechanic told me that the reason for my continuing oil leak from the valve cover was that it was incorrectly changed and the wrong "putty" was used when the valve cover gasket was changed. This was the third time V.C. began leaking since it was changed a year ago at said timing belt mechanic and reason for the visit to a new mechanic. So my problem is who or what to believe. I have a 30,000 mile old water pump making lots of noise and leaking a good amount of coolant. I tried to contact the owner of the original service shop but not yet spoken to him directly about my problem. Prior to this I had nothing but good experiences with this shop in regards to my 91 Nissan pickup truck. But as soon as I take my wife's car in I have had nothing but problems.
I'm absolutely clueless when it comes to cars. I bought a 99 Carolla with 130k miles from a family friend, Randy, who owns a repair shop. The car was brought in with a blown engine as its previous owner ignored its oil needs. Randy put in an engine with 90k miles and tightened the motor mounts. It made the 14 hour trek from Nashville to my new home in Houston, but now the bottom makes a rattling noise going over any bump. I'm not talking big potholes- even tiny cracks cause it to rattle. Some notes:
The exhaust sounds normal. The sound is coming from in front of me at ground level beneath the hood. Just took it for a test drive and I heard it from both sides as well as the middle. I don't feel it through the steering wheel, pedal, or seat. The only thing indicative of a problem is the noise. If I had the radio on at full blast, I wouldn't know there was an issue.
The check engine light also came on. I took the car to AutoZone and got two errors- the first, P0505, was an air control valve control circuit (probable causes per AutoZone: open or short circuit condition, poor electrical connection, and/or failed IAC motor) and the second, P0420, was catalyst system efficiency below threshold- bank 1 (causes: air leak in exhaust before rear HO2S (heated oxygen sensor), AF sensor error, fuel system fault, and/or faulty catalytic converter).
I've noticed a rattling noise coming from under the front of my 02 toyota corolla. I looked under the car and there seems to be a piece of metal under the front of the car thats vibrating and making the noise. The piece of metal is almost directly in the middle front of the car, in-between the front tires. The sound seems to be most prominent when I accelerating or backing up.

At first I thought coming from the dashboard area, like under the hood. However, I tried listening under the hood and couldn't really hear it over the engine noise. Finally I realized it actually seems to be coming from under the dashboard on the driver's side, right above the pedals. I made a recording holding the microphone down there. Yesterday, when I started the engine I heard a rattling noise. Opening it up and looking inside, it seemed to be coming from the area of the serpentine belt. Looking closer, I saw that the pulley appeared to be wobbling slightly, although it didn't feel loose to the touch.
As I'm out of town on a roadtrip and needed to try to get home, I decided to try to drive it anyway. Aside from the noise itself, the car ran fine - the engine temperature stayed normal, which I kept an eye on closely.
After a bit over 50 miles of this, however, the serpentine belt got thrown off. With my engine temperature rising, alternator not functioning and power steering cut out, I pulled over immediately and shut off the car.
Looking more closely at the water pump pulley, I could see that it was clearly tilted in its alignment in comparison to the other pulleys along the belt's route. This explains the wobbling I saw. Clearly that needs to be repaired, lest it throw off the serpentine belt again.
So, this brings me to my questions here.
Given that the water pump itself seemed to be functioning fine during the drive until the belt got thrown, is it possible that just the pulley itself is broken? Or that it's misaligned?
If so, is it possible to replace / realign the pulley without having a mechanic tear the car apart to get the water pump out?
If these aren't the issue, is it possible that the water pump itself is just misaligned as opposed to broken? If so, can it be realigned without buying a new one?
I'm basically trying to assess
* what exactly is the problem
* whether it is something I can fix myself without a mechanit
* whether I'll need parts and what those parts would be
* how many hours of service I should expect to have to fund if I can't do it myself

I purchased a used 2010 Toyota Corolla LE with about 40k miles back in February of this year. Since then, the car has been issue-free and has responded accordingly.
Two weeks ago I noticed that the car when idle or at a stop light it'd make a subtle rattling noise (as if it was something behind the glove compartments rattling against metal). At 1st I thought maybe it was something inside, but as that week turned to days, I noticed that while I was outside the car and it was on and idle, I could hear the rattling from the right side of the car under the passenger seat (closer to the engine, as if right below where the glove compartment sat)--It is a constant rattle at the same frequency..meaning it doesn't rattle one way 1st and then another later. It sounds the same, but it is random.
It evolved from a subtle rattle inside to being a loud rattle outside under the car. I noticed that if it was rattling and I turned off the air, the rattling would stop, but after 20 seconds, the rattling would return just not as frequent.
It was advised to me that perhaps it was the blower...but the blower sits behind the glove compartment and should not sound so loud under the car. Not only that, but if the blower isn't on (when I turn off the air) it shouldn't sound...at least that's my logic for it.
The sound is getting louder and more frequent at this time and I'm just not sure what to do about this. I live in Miami, FL and hearing so many rip offs at mechanics, I don't know what this rattling is and I've already crawled under the car and see nothing wrong, nothing shaking violently, nothing.
