As it is, my roof racks are separated, as if they were going to carry skis or something else on them. I notice a typical wind noise at highways speeds, not unpleasant, but I wonder if I put them together at the rear, or took them off altogether, it would make much difference. Also, as I take off on cold mornings, I notice exhaust fumes collect on the rear window, then immediately evaporate away.
View 3 RepliesSo the rear rack mount on my 2dr Golf has completely rusted out - theres literally nothing to stop the one end from flying around.
I'm moving in 2 weeks and was counting on my Golf to make it happen - the racks were going to haul the mattress, couch and dresser.
Can i get a replacement mount or am I stuck with getting a new set?
Would a Yakima 44" Fairing fit on the OEM roof rack? And are there any simple mods to get rid of the wind noise from the roof rack?
View 1 RepliesIf I drive at higher speeds (anything above 40mph) I get an unusual wind vibration noise when the roof is fully retracted. If I roll it forward an inch or two it seems fine. Seems like a bit of a design flaw.
View 10 RepliesI collected a 6 month old demonstrator Phaeton on Friday to replace my previous 3 year old.
It's interesting all the little changes in the upgrade model, and it has (to me) a different feel. Quite a bit of this may be due to the 19" wheels which do contribute quite a but more road noise at higher (motorway) speeds.
My real query is the sunroof on this car. I hear significant wind noise from the closed roof at higher speeds (an indicated 80 to 90 mph). On inspection I suspect that the front lip of the sunroof is a few mm proud of the roof.
04 GX470 , open the back window while driving also had front windows open and all of a sudden I hear this noise like a helicopter to find that my moon roof was vibrating ? So I closed the back windows and everything was normal?
View 12 RepliesIn preparing for my end of lease inspection, I mounted my '04 roof racks back on my Treg, and a few days later, I noticed this very loud hmmm/vibration, sounding almost like a steady fog horn, coming from behind me. It lasted about ten seconds, and at first, all I could think of was "that is not us! Until a few minutes later, when it recurred, and I realized that it was probably going to be speed dependent. I eventually realized that the one thing that was different since the prior week was that I put the racks back on the car. When I installed them, I dropped them into their recessed slots, and slid them back to the rear, where I think they are supposed to make the least noise.
Well, not anymore. I think I have to either slide one forward, say to the next detent in the tracks, or get the dealer to back the X3 up better. I think I will slide the forward rack up some, or take them both out for the last month of the lease.
Vibration coming from either the roof rack or rear of the vehicle? I seem to get it in cold weather sometimes or when I accelerate from between 40 and about 60 mph. I have checked to see if the roof rack needs tightening but it looks good. Of course, every time I bring in for service, guess what, they cannot replicate the sound.

While I'm at the topic of wind noise, do you also notice that when driving on a two-lane hwy, the wind noise leaks from the rear sunshade opening on the door panel when driving by the opposite traffic?

Anyway as I'm driving every now and then there's a very loud thump on the roof like the wind is pushing the roof in. It seems to happen as bursts of wind hit the car.

I think I remember something about a vent or breathing hole in the b-pillar that's supposed to be open...but when covered causes wind roar at elevated highway speeds...
Over the last 6 months I have had my car back to the dealer to look into wind noise and a knocking noise from the door mirror. At first they just kept saying they couldn't find anything wrong, then they said there was a fault report for the mirror and had the car in to get it fixed, but the noise is still there intermittently. After numerous returns for the wind noise I noticed that if I push on the door or the window it gets noticeably louder - the dealer took the car back in and said they adjusted the door but I still have both noises - they are intermittently better or worse. What the cause is - the dealer has suggested changing the door seal but wants me to pay for it and I am concerned I will end up paying out and still not get the problem fixed. As for the mirror I just don't know what to do....
View 4 RepliesSince taking delivery of my Touareg in Sept. I have, on three or four occasions experienced a loud noise that sounds like something striking the roof above the drivers side. It happened 2 or 3 times last fall and then not again until yesterday. It does not appear to be speed or weather related and obviously there is no sign of anything hitting the roof. The roof rack is correctly assembled at the rear.

The steering wheel vibrates at speeds above 70mph on relatively smooth highways (my Wrx and the crappy Jetta rental I drove today showed no vibration to 90 mph on the same road.). The vibration is slight, but definitely there and noticeable if you take your hands off the wheel not a great way to drive at 75mph.
The dealership says they found no problem with steering wheel vibration.
My question is: is some vibration normal in this vehicle, given vehicle size, tire size, and crappy construction? I'm just not used to seeing any based on the Japanese cars I've always driven.
I have a rather annoying high pitched tone coming from the front passengers side widow/mirror area. The dealer says it's normal wind noise from the mirror and can't do anything about it. I think they are just being lazy, and I think it's actually a window seal issue.
Here are more details; I hear the noise typically only at speeds above 60-65mph, although I have heard it as low as 40mph, but was driving into a head wind (so the combined air speed was about the same). It is a high-pitched, high-frequency noise that almost sounds like a continuous tone. It is loud enough to be annoying even with the radio on at moderate volume. It will disappear completely at speeds lower than mentioned above. It is localized only to that one side. The drivers side mirror/window is silent (for this issue at least) no matter what speed I am going.
A recent road trip gave enough frustration on this issue to make me begin experimenting. I taped up various mirror seams in a number of configurations and none alleviated the noise. At one point I rolled down the window about an inch to see If I could hear it more clearly from the window. The noise disappeared but I thought the turbulent wind noise at that speed might be masking it. So I rolled the window up and then just *tapped* the switch down the slightest amount and to my surprise the high-pitched noise disappeared completely, yet I did not open it enough to hear regular wind noise. This all leads me to highly suspect a window seal issue, and not mirror noise at all. Cracking the seal so slightly must allow the pressure to equalize canceling out the noise.
When I took it in for the issue they say (of course) "Can not replicate, wind noise from mirror within factory spec, no action taken" and something about cracking the window "re-aligns the flow over the mirror into the cabin reducing the noise" sounds because the drivers side is as silent as the grave, and the mirrors are symmetrical to my knowledge.
When I turn or go over speed bumps/drive way entries or anything that seems to move my suspension around I hear a creaking noise from what seems to be the roof of my car. It's like metal rubbing on metal and it's pretty apparent. Is this something I should be concerned about? Or something other people have had? I've had this Camry for almost a month, it has 53k miles and was a corporate fleet vehicle before I purchased it.
View 14 RepliesPurchased my LS 460 last week and noticed when going 55 mph or more there was wind noise coming from both the drivers front window and passenger's front window. Decided to go back to the dealer and was told that is a known problem with the LS 460 (not the 460L because I was told they use a different type of glass which apparently has a better seal). You can't hear it with conversation or radio, but if there isn't anything on, it's there. Kinda like when a window is just barely cracked while driving is the sound you hear. I test drove a different LS 460 while at the dealer and was able to verify it too had the same wind noise. The dealer suggested that if there is enough comments made that Lexus would undoubtedly look into a "campaign" to correct the problem. Went online and checked a few review sites by consumers and noticed others had also commented on this wind noise. If you have the LS 460 (not the 460L) check it out...and if you hear it, consider filing it with Lexus Customer Service at 1-800-255-3987. Overall, a great car...things like this can happen with the first year of a body redesign.

View 8 RepliesSo I noticed I had some wind noise on the highway coming from my sunroof. It was actual wind coming through the dry rotted seals around the glass. Well I got really lucky and a truck kicked something up on the highway and it went right through the glass. Called the insurance company and since glass is covered free in Ma, they shipped an OEM sunroof to the local shop. Got it put in this morning, and it is all quiet again.
View 4 RepliesI have a strange "wind noise" at 70+ mph -- only coming from the passenger side -- definitely the mirror area. I think the door seals are OK and the problem is the painted mirror cover making a sound (resonating/vibrating) when the wind hits it at high speed (I was tapping on it with my fingers and I could see where this might happen). So I went and got some Dynamat type stuff to put on the inside. But I cannot figure out how to get the cover off.
I saw a couple posts on people installing the turn signal indicators, with pictures of the mirrors half torn apart, but none of the posts mentioned how they got the painted cover off. I tried to pry it off by jamming my fingernails in a crack and getting a hold, but that's not working.
