Touareg :: Whistling Right Front - Variable With Throttle
Dec 1, 2006
I have an 04, vin 70k+ V8, Nav/Air Susp. with 35k miles. My problem seems pretty specific:
I have a solid whistle in the front right area of the truck above very slow speeds. It really does sound like air moving, so I was thinking mirror/rack, wheelwell, etc. But, when I push the throttle, even a little, it subsides greatly...almost gone. That's what makes me nervous.
Of all the posts I read, the only one that seems like it might be my problem is the driveshaft bearing, maybe because of the torque, etc placed on it during acceleration (I'm no mechanic). I would think that any aerodynamic type problem would have nothing to do with slight throttle changes.
Am I on track? Common occurrence? Anything I should tell the dealer? I'll probably take all this to them when I do the 40k service. I also got a the running gear fault last week, but it hasn't returned. Do you think my Air Susp seals/piston rings are going too?

The weather here in AB Canada is very cold lately -30oC. I have noticed a whistling noise from the front window defrost area. The auto feature also annoys me as the fan goes full throttle when I start the vehicle and it isn't even warm. I wish it would scale up as the engine was warm only. As well, I am finding the inside of my t-reg fogs easily. Yes it's cold, and I do park in a heated garage, but even after being out for a while, I still get some fogging.

Our 2011 w/140,000 miles has a variable front end noise that I suspect from past experience with other vehicles is a bad wheel bearing. I've seen posts of the procedure for replacing the Gen 2 bearings that requires the hub and bearing be pressed out and new bearing back in which would limit the DIY'er, but looking at the replacement parts diagram for the Gen 3, it appears that the hub and bearing unit is bolted in with 4 bolts and may not need a hydraulic press to install.

1998 3.1 ... 206,000 miles on it. Transmission rebulit about 25,000 miles ago, about 1 year ago.
Yesterday and again today from initial takeoff i noticed a whistling sound from about 20 mph up to about 40 mph.and it seemed to increase as i applied throttle. Is there some kind of vacuum to do with the choke maybe causing it?
I didnt notice the whistle after car was operating temp.

97 Sierra K1500, 5.7 liter. High pitched whistling sound underhood in the vicinity of the throttle body. Starts after truck warms up and quiets down when accelerating. I've wiggled hoses, disconnected what I could without stalling engine, checked air lines into throttle body, checked air filter, etc. Sound does not change when I apply brakes so I don't think it's related to master cylinder. The only time it changes is when I accelerate, then only gets quiet until I come back to steady speed.
Truck has 85,000, runs great. No codes.

I have a 2001 Echo 5-speed that I bought it November. Loving it so far. One thing I've noticed is an electronic-like whistling sound whenever I'm applying light throttle. The sound goes away if I left off the throttle, or if I give it more gas. When I say light throttle, it's when I'm applying enough pressure to maintain maybe 1500 RPM in neutral, so not much. It's only at that specific point that I'll hear the noise, and it's in all gears and not related to vehicle speed. I've searched through the usual channels but didn't find anything related.
In the few months before I bought it the previous owner had the MAF sensor, alternator, and water pump replaced by the dealer so those components are covered under the 1 year/20k parts warranty if they may be a culprit. I'm hoping to narrow down what the problem could be before I take it in for routine service anyways.

When we were driving our Touareg from the dealer, I (my dad did not notice) noticed that there was a faint whistling sound coming from the car. This happened on surface streets, not freeways, and about 35-40 MPH. Sunroof and windows were closed.

Experienced a wind noise that is very irritating at above 40mph?I am by no means being nit picky about either,it's very loud. The sound is best described as wind whistle. The frustrating part is that it is hard to pin-point and a search here turned up ....

I got my v-8 12-22-03, very pleased. however at exactly 53 miles per hour and higher a high pitched whistling comes from the right side of the sunroof, whether open or closed. The dealer is perplexed and stumped. Sticking my head out at 55 miles an hour is fun (very dog like and my son was driving) but no way you can hear anything and pinpoint the noise. It does not appear to be the roof rack which is properly installed and both in the rear. In the words of the teacher in ferris bueller..

My car has a bad whistle sound from the sidemirrors if I travel at over 40mph, I heard someone else had the same problem and the dealer fixed it but putting something on the mirror.... is there a TSB on this? I'm going to the dealership next week and i would like to see if he can fix it. List of things I have.
- Sometimes when i enter my car and start, my seats don't move back to the previous setting....... I had to hit "1" to get it to move back. it fails 3 out of 10 tries.
- Wind noise from the side mirrors, especially when over 40mph..... whistling sound.
- dash vibration when the weather is cold.... Not sure about this one.
- See if the dealer will turn off my DRL for me.

I have close to 60k on my V-8 and it has been virtually trouble free. The last few days I have heard what seems to be a whining or whistling coming from the drive train at the top of 3rd, then 4th,5th and 6th. Kind of sounds like metal to metal, but is a very quiet whistle.

Having the problem of when the A/C is on about 1/2 way (3-4 bars), you can hear a kind of turbulent whistling noise behind the drivers seat? I think its coming from the drivers side passenger vent that's in the B pillar.
At first I thought it was a fan motor that was going bad, but was informed by the dealer that there is no fan there. They thought it might be a duct not making good connection with another duct and air escaping.
My dealer is clueless (of course) and said that they could not find a TSB on this problem.

Very high pitched "whistle"(enough to give you a headache) as vehicle speed increases or fan speed increased. This will not occur on recirculate and will go away if a window or roof is opened.

Since we know that most VW service sucks, I'm taking my 04 V8, Nav/Air Susp 35k miles in tomorrow because the whistling/rubbing noise was bad enough on the ride home from work last night that it started freaking me out.
I want to tell the service department to at LEAST check the following:
Whistling: Gets worse with speed and when the car gets warmed up. Sounds more like rubbing when you get going. Check the drive shaft bearing.
Running Gear Fault: Check air suspension piston rings ( I need to look this up again) Something to do with the air bag or air pump seal.
Hesitation: There should be a TSB for this that can be fixed with a computer adjustment.

Noise in the Touareg's drive/brake system during cold weather.Someone even recorded the noise. One person stated that VW replaced his drive shaft and hanger bearing assembly.I was wondering how that worked out?Did it solve the problem? They used "electronic ears" to diagnose my problem and it certainly indicated the hanger bearing. I had assembly replaced in my '05 V6 and the noise returned within weeks! And now the noise is present in warmer temperatures...up to 43 degrees. Is it possible I got another bad one?

I have a 2005 Touareg TDI european model, with an anoying whistling sound somewhere in the drivers door or the b-pillar. The sound is not constant, but change according to the settings to the fan. I have been to the VW dealer, but they have not found any solution to my the problem yet.

Whistling sound from the pillar vents behind the driver and passenger sides? I get the whistling sounds from the passenger side when the fan is on a certain speed.

I am having a whistling noise coming from my front axle... It only happens when the hubs are locked and in 4WD when hubs are unlocked and in 4wd there is no whistling noise... I know they are vacuum operated for the auto hubs... We just got a good snow fall the past few days and have had to have the lockers locked to stay straight... Also can I keep the hubs locked and cruise and 55 to 60 mph ? or is it not good for the locking hubs...

Variable idle. Ignition new as is air filter etc. Idles fine in neutral, a bit rough in drive, smooths out with AC on. Sometimes it's also fine with AC off. Sometimes not, literally stop to stop. Removed and cleaned IAC. Reinstalled with new gaskets etc. 30 ohm resistance between center and either side pins. Manual specifies 19.3 to 22 ohms. Is the 30 ohm reading enough variation to indicate a bad IAC in need of replacement?

2001 F150 SCAB with 74,000 miles. There seems to be a whistling noise coming from the front axle. It is definately a rolling noise. I can shift into neutral and put it in 4H and still have the noise. Brakes are good, tires are fair... I just rotated my tires (criss-crossed front to back) also sprayed all of my boots with silicone spray. Still has a whistling metal to metal bearing sound. When I have the front jacked up and spin the wheels, there seems to be a decent drag turning by hand. I don't remember having much of a drag before.

So I noticed this ever since I got my Elantra (2013). When I have Active Eco on, it seems like the AC fan speeds up and slows down a little, sporadically.
