V6 Touareg, Sunroof, roof racks (locked together at rear.) At certain speeds (40-45mph) there is a loud vibration on the roof. If the sunroof is opened or raised, the vibration stops. Nothing visible on the roof or sunroof which would suggest the cause of the noise.

View 4 RepliesI took my first road trip last weekend in my new-to-me 2010 Tiguan. At speeds over 70mph, there is a quite loud buzzing noise from the front of the roof area. It sounds like 2 pieces of metal are slapping together at a very high rate of speed. I can't for the life of me figure out what it could be. It is really, really annoying. So much so, that I may take another car for my NYC to Florida trip next month. I'd really like to take the Tiguan though...
I have the panoramic roof - it all seems tight and has no rattles whatsoever. There are no loose moldings, no gaps in the windshield molding. The roof rails appear to be tight, however the front of the right one is slightly raised off of the roof surface. I was going to try to tighten it somehow, but don't know how to even access the screws that hold it down.
In preparing for my end of lease inspection, I mounted my '04 roof racks back on my Treg, and a few days later, I noticed this very loud hmmm/vibration, sounding almost like a steady fog horn, coming from behind me. It lasted about ten seconds, and at first, all I could think of was "that is not us! Until a few minutes later, when it recurred, and I realized that it was probably going to be speed dependent. I eventually realized that the one thing that was different since the prior week was that I put the racks back on the car. When I installed them, I dropped them into their recessed slots, and slid them back to the rear, where I think they are supposed to make the least noise.
Well, not anymore. I think I have to either slide one forward, say to the next detent in the tracks, or get the dealer to back the X3 up better. I think I will slide the forward rack up some, or take them both out for the last month of the lease.
Driving my V10 at around 140 km/hr (87 mph) along the highway and passing a truck (in a tunnel), all of a sudden there was a violent vibration from the roof rack. It seems like it went into its resonance frequency because as soon as I slowed down it went away, and didn't reappear again.
View 2 RepliesVibration coming from either the roof rack or rear of the vehicle? I seem to get it in cold weather sometimes or when I accelerate from between 40 and about 60 mph. I have checked to see if the roof rack needs tightening but it looks good. Of course, every time I bring in for service, guess what, they cannot replicate the sound.
View 8 RepliesSince taking delivery of my Touareg in Sept. I have, on three or four occasions experienced a loud noise that sounds like something striking the roof above the drivers side. It happened 2 or 3 times last fall and then not again until yesterday. It does not appear to be speed or weather related and obviously there is no sign of anything hitting the roof. The roof rack is correctly assembled at the rear.

Its as if something in the wheels/drive train isn't smooth (like a busted bearing) and there is a low grinding noise that is consistent with the engine revs. I can feel it in the gas pedal and on the shifter when I place my hand on it.
View 2 RepliesI have a 04 v6 model , in the last couple of months when I am on the interstate at about 75-80 mph. I get a very loud vibrating noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. The dealer thinks the drive shaft has some play in it.

Since the blue book value on the Touareg is worthless and I've got it paid off, I might as well keep it until the wheels fall off of it. Anyhow, on to the problem at hand ...
When driving on the interstate at high speed somewhere around 80 - 90 mph and you push the accelerator to get that extra bit of speed out of the downshift so you can pass or just for the heck of it, the transmission starts clunking, LOUDLY, which of course causes you to let your foot off the gas. The clunking continues for about 5 - 10 seconds until the car has slowed down a bit.
I can still get the car up to speeds of around 110 mph (my wife tried it just about 15 minutes ago on our way back from Florida), but it has to be done gradually as to keep the transmission from downshifting.
Around town the car responds fine. Occasionally it will have a hard shift, but I can't find a reason or pattern to that. Fifth gear also works fine in city traffic, I've used tiptronic to keep it in 5th and I've also watched the main display change from D4 to D5 to D6 and back again without incident.
I'm too afraid to take the car up to 90 and then engage tiptronic and downshift to 5th. This transmission has had its fair share of problems. I'm on my third stepper motor, the forward transmission seal had to be replaced and then later the hydraulic pump had to be replaced. There are no noticeable fluid stains on the belly pans and there are no stains on my garage floor, so I doubt its leaking fluid. Can you even check the transmission fluid level in this thing?
Other than the transmission problem, the Touareg is behaving fairly well. (Knock on wood) It still rides nice and I've learned to put up with the little electrical anomalies that happen like the blue strobe backlight compass (it's just dancing along with the music) and the lights switching ON in full daylight (with the euro switch installed).
About a month ago my Touareg started making loud rumbling noises at highway speeds. It sounds and feels (it makes the whole truck vibrate) like you're driving on the "wake me up bumps" that are on the shoulder. Some times it last for 30 seconds and other times it goes on for the whole trip. It's driving me crazy; however the dealer can't reproduce the problem so they think I'm crazy. It doesn't do it all the time, however, the only common symptom is it happens at speeds above 65 mph. It has happened when it the car was cold and hot, cruise on and off and variable highway speeds. The transmission was replaced right after I received the car due to a malfunction, so the dealer doesn't think this could be a second faulty transmission.

Anyway as I'm driving every now and then there's a very loud thump on the roof like the wind is pushing the roof in. It seems to happen as bursts of wind hit the car.
View 2 RepliesI am at Hyundai dealership right now, I really wish I don't need to come back for roof noise again, the noise made me feel ' I don't give a about this car anymore', new york has most freaking terrible roads, there are sharp and deep potholes everywhere, causing the car making noise like shooting ak 47, so pissed, i was so outraged and The consequent is I scratched the rim when Cornering, any easy and low budget fix? I would change my rim in two years, but not now.
View 15 RepliesI have a new question regarding my Touareg. Recently my roof rack broke, a latch on one side of one of the crossbars broke almost off. The part that the key goes into and pulls away to release its hold to the roof was broken when trying to force it closed after adjusting the rack's position. Can this piece be replaced or does the rack have to be replaced?
View 6 RepliesIf I drive at higher speeds (anything above 40mph) I get an unusual wind vibration noise when the roof is fully retracted. If I roll it forward an inch or two it seems fine. Seems like a bit of a design flaw.

But the other day I wanted to see what it looks like if i separated the rack. It looks like it takes a key to unlock it, i thought it was the cars ignition key but it's not. How I could unlock it or get a key to do this?

at an angle causes a loud popping noise from my roof. I checked the headliner to see if anything was loose but came up with nothing. This occasionally happens on sharp turns on uneven ground.
I recently lowered my car so now this is happening way too often.
As it's gotten colder, I've noticed my roof interior seems to be popping/squeaking, like really cold plastic shifting - hard to explain but when it's warmer, say > 40, I don't have it at all.

I notice a typical wind noise at highways speeds, not unpleasant, but I wonder if I put them together at the rear, or took them off altogether, it would make much difference. Also, as I take off on cold mornings, I notice exhaust fumes collect on the rear window, then immediately evaporate away.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2004 Touareg V8 (55K miles). Recently I've noted significant rain drippage from the overhead console (sunroof equipped). I've reviewed this forum and note some previous communications regarding similar leakage, which apparently was attributable to poor seals between the outer skin and the sunroof structure (and there has been a TSB released for cars under New Car Warranty).
Is there a system of drains that are accessible (as in my 2000 Jetta, which drains through channels in the door posts) which could become clogged, and which I could unclog (as in my Jetta), before I spend the money and hassle of taking my Touareg to the dealer/service person?
