Possible to turn on and off the passenger side airbag? In order to have a child's car seat in the front I need to be able to turn off the airbag. I need to turn it back on when an adult is sitting there. It is a Touareg 3,2 V6 Tiptronic.
View 6 RepliesThe Passenger Airbag Off light is always on no matter if the passenger seat is empty or has someone sitting in it. It magically went away for a year and worked perfectly and now it came back to haunt me. I tried pulling all connections to the seat and cleaning them with an electrical cleaner, but the light is still on. What else can cause Airbag Off light to turn on?
View 1 RepliesI'd like to turn off the passenger-side airbag in my 2006 Prius. I have a dual swing arm laptop mount that rises from the seat bolts on the passenger side seat and the apparatus sits clearly in front of the airbag. To give a visual of what I'm talking about, some pictures of the laptop mount can be found here.
For safety's sake, I need to turn off the airbag to prevent the possibility of crushing the passenger's chest or face in the event of a frontal collision. I'm trying to avoid a trip to the dealership as they can be pretty hesitant to do something like this. (Which is understandable, but in my case, I need to have this modification done.)
Here's the situation. When my wife sits in the passengers seat, the "Passenger air bag off" light comes on half the time. It will turn off half of the time (meaning the air bag is on) but the other half of the time the light is on. It turns right off when I sit in the passengers side and stays off, the problem is only when she sits there.
I've had the recall fix on the passengers side seat done already, (before, the light was always on). I don't think it's her size either, she's 5'8" so it's not like she's too small. She's tried sitting in different positions, but we can't figure out what's doing it.
I don't know how to get rid of annoying "Passenger Airbag Off" BEEP. Follow the instructions for removal of head unit.

2. Disassemble the light unit into its constituent parts. You can pull the display panel off the electronic bit with some modest force, and it'll be obvious how the prism is separated:
Note that I painted the prism surface black with a sharpie. That doesn't work much.
3. Layer a precisely cut piece of thick black paper between the prism and the inside of the panel. Check for a light
leak by holding it up to a bright light. It's tough to cut the paper just right so that there are no light leaks.
4. Reassemble the light unit and stick it back into place.
5. Reseat the head unit.
Warning: you can't just leave the light unplugged. It'll throw an airbag fault. That's why I opted for blocking the light, rather than getting rid of the light altogether.
Bought 09 Buick Lacrosse CX 4/11 with 26K mi. Jun. '12 passenger airbag began turning off intermittently with passenger in seat. Buick shop replaced pps module. In 2/13 it began doing it again. This time buick shop said the computer was being confused by placing items on the seat weighing less than 75-80 lbs. and didn't know whether to stay on or turn off. They "reset" computer. Been placing items on the seat ever since buying and never experienced this problem. Is the airbag sensor that sensitive? It's doing it again, a few days after the shop "fixed" it with the reset, and I only placed a newspaper on the edge of the seat and snatched it back up immediately.

I dropped by the VW dealership and they said that a clip broke off from inside causing this and they were asking me how it happened! How I occupy only the drivers seat in my car.

I know the es350 was so bad like this that there was a threat of class action. I've read the weight sensor is in the passenger seat rail and you can also do a calibration with a scan tool.
Recently "acquired" AB Fault that would not go away. Upon routine 10k service, here is what was found out. If you move the passenger front seat within the first few seconds, the self-tests (including determination of seat empty to automatically turn off passenger airbag) get confused and a fault code is thrown. Fault will not go away until reset by VW service (or presumably VAG-COM can do this).
The recommended "fix", at this point, is to not mess with the seat adjustment for 10sec after ON. There is no written information on Touaregs, apparently, but same problem is documented in a Technical Bulletin for New Beetle. A relevant quote from that document is: "Volkswagen Technical Service is investigating the following condition. After switching ignition ON, the Airbag Monitoring indicator light stays illuminated and DTC 02511 014 - Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module Fault - is stored in DTC memory.

View 2 RepliesI just did TSB036-07 on my 07 I4 for the sluggish problem. It turns out very good. Now I got another problem right after that fix, the "Passenger Airbag Off" light is always on even with an adult (over 150 lb) sitting there. I suspect they touched some wires during the TSB service. I will certainly take it back to the dealer and report it back to you. Searching the forum, I saw one reported that the ECU has to be replaced to fix it.
View 5 RepliesI received an Air bag Fault and Parking Break Fault yesterday when I started the car. Found my (drivers) belt latch sensor wiring was buggered so I fixed that. I don't know if that was the technical name for it, but it was the wiring from the receiving latch to the connector. The parking break fault went away so my guess is that short pissed it off. But who knows, it could be unrelated.
However, the air bag fault will not go away. I thought by fixing that it would vanish, but I guess not.
I have found that the light goes out for a moment and then reappears when the "passenger air bag off" light comes on. The other day, it thought my wife was still in the seat after she got out so I'm guessing the passenger seat wiring is the culprit.
I don't have a VAG-COM so the above detail is all I have. I really don't want to go to the dealer, but do I have a choice?
I haven't posted on Vortex since I owned my GTI VR6 I bought R32 number 258 last Summer and I have been loving it. Last Friday I installed all new dash vents as the tabs for aiming them had busted off every single one. I bought a full set of vents from a Chinese vendor off Ebay along with the dark red hazard button. The setup looks a million times better, but there is no indicator for the passenger airbag, and leaving the connector unplugged seems to throw and airbags fault. Any workaround? Will the airbags still fire in the event of an accident? Does the weight detector in the passenger seat still work?

First time two weeks ago - Airbag light came on, brought it in...Repaired wiring harness reset light. Light comes on next day, make an appt.
Second time today, brought it in...Just picked it up, fired up the Treg airbag light comes right back on. I was told another harness was repaired and something about a side airbag firing something...
So my third time is in the next week or two... fab. They say the whole harness is to be replaced, which is cool. I respect my service team, the engineers as well... I'm going with the flo, I'm pretty laid back.
My questions is...How long do I need to go with the flow if this keeps happening? All the while this is going on, for every issue I have that's super legit airbag, stepper, running gear. They keep giving me the hook up on, new wood trim, new headlight switch, new mirror switch, new buttons on my center console, new buttons on the nav....

View 3 RepliesChanging the OEM steering wheel to something sportier? I have a 2002 1.8 Passat, without the multifunctional steering wheel. The wheel is huge. I am thinking of changing to a hree 'spoke' wheel, a la GTI or R32.
How would that effect the airbag? What about ease of turning?
