Touareg :: Transmission Shifts Into 5th And Stays There Or Extremely Jerky Downshifts
Jun 9, 2005
My beloved Treg is marooned at the dealer again, having been towed there this morning. Transmission is all over the place...shifts into 5th and stays there, or extremely jerky shifts - especially downshifts. Gear position indicator is highlighted in red and no longer indicates which gear I'm in. Check engine light is on; no message in MFI...
Incidentally, it appears that the dealer and/or VWOA is starting to understand how to treat luxury vehicle buyers. Roadside assistance was very responsive and courteous. Dealer set me up with a rental from Budget...made a point to have me pick something similar to the Treg (not a POS econobox). I'm driving a Ford Exploder...a far cry from the Treg, but at least it's an SUV and has similar seating and hauling capacity.

The transmission is shifting extremely hard when it downshifts to make a pass.
Any other time it shifts fine, this is the only scenario it happens in.
It is pretty violent, shifting with a bang.
It is a 2010 corolla, auto, with 70k miles, I have never changed the fluid, and I don't think it has anything to do with it.
The tech said it might be the battery, as it was going bad. I put a new battery in, and it didn't seem to do it for two weeks or so, but is now back doing it again.

Car intermittently shifts very rough and jerky. Just took on a long vacation trip and every AM when it was cold it shifted hard them smoothed out once warmed up. Got home and now it is doing it all the time. Dealer said do the trans flush...I did it and it made no difference. Is this a common problem with this model? Mileage is 39,800...not sure I want to buy this car at lease end.

I just bought a brand new 2013 Elantra! I love the car, but over the past week or so I have started to feel the car's transmission (auto) jerk when it shifts from 3rd to 4th gear. I feel the car hesitate somewhat when going from 3rd and then jerk into 4th gear if that makes any sense. The car has less than 1000 miles and it never did it when I first bought it. The transmission was always smooth until recently. Also, when coasting down the road I feel the car jerk forward when I give it some gas which also feels very strange to me!?

this has been an outstanding van, quite reliable. it has about 115,000 miles on it. Recently, I've noticed that the transmission makes a 'tapping' noise when it shifts or downshifts. every gear has that same slight 'tap'. the tranny shifts fine, smooth, but this sound worries me a bit. any chance this could be a u-joint issue?

Having downshift problems? The dealer has "flashed" the software 3 times and the hesitation still occurs.

Transmission (V-6) is slow on the upshift; and jerky on the downshift. Going uphill, the transmission does not want to downshift into a lower gear unless the accelerator is heavily depressed. So, 6th gear at like 45 mph uphill, then finally downshift into 4th with jerk downshift.
As car comes to a stop, right about 2 or 3 mph, the rpm's drop from idle to about 400; sometimes once sometimes twice. It feels like it's going to stall. Have had all the software updates.

I need to have my DSG checked out.. Extremely jerky starting out in first gear when very hot out and engine warmed up --most noticeable when just easy on the accelerator. Need to get the ok for mechanotronic replacement. Who to trust for a reliable job and evaluation of the problem.

I have a 2011 Hybrid Touareg. I'm just curious if other's are having a similar issue as mine with the V6 or TDI version.
When in drive mode and I shift the shifter to the right for manual down and up shifts, at times, I notice it's not as responsive. I try downshifting, and it won't downshift, it takes maybe 3-4 tries at times. Sometimes it works fine, other times it doesn't respond which can be frustrating. This goes the same with up shifting.

I bought a stick shift GLS in April and overall I'm happy with it. However I think that something is not right with the way it shifts.
Basically when I shift from 1-2-3 it is almost impossible to do it smoothly unless I wait until the revs get to 3K RPM between shifts. This is fine for merging on the highway but not driving around town. Going from 1st to 2nd is really jerky.
Also the engine stalls easily. There is practically no time to give it a little more throttle (or clutch) when you begin to hear the engine revs go down.
At first I thought it was just that I needed to get used to it or the clutch was somehow not broken in yet but now I have 2500miles of driving in traffic and it is not any better. Also I have driven manuals for the past 24 years so, despite what it sounds like, I have a lot of experience driving stick. Additionally my wife drove it for a few days and she had the same experience.

I'm completely aware a lifted truck will not ride factory and most likely ride harder. But this is ridiculous.
So I bought a 8" super lift for my F250 7.3 2000, although the price is very cheap at that shipped to my door debating if I have messed up either with the brand or somewhere because I feel like I went from a casual ride in my lovely 7.3 to feeling like a horse carriage of a few century's ago.
Lift is setup with lift leaf springs in the front, one add a leaf in the rear with a block, and 4 new shocks and all the other hardware included to do the lift.
I'm wondering if it's possible the springs are installed wrong, or the shocks are just that bad or if there a weird issue I've over looked.
Tire pressure is set to 35-40 psi all around on toyo open country mts, (which I was running before the lift so that hasn't changed) but I mean this is so stiff that when I hit a bump my steering wheel jerks and I feel like my suspension has absolutely no flex in it. Debating on returning to stock or not at this point...

I have a 2003 F250 with a 5.4L V8 automatic transmission with 64,000 miles. The truck runs and drives well, but occasionally while driving, it acts like it shifts into a higher gear, slips a bit, then downshifts and runs fine. The duration of this "acting up" is about 1-2sec. It seems to do it when going up a slight grade at cruising speed about 40-50mph. (Not towing when it does it) It doesn't do it all the time. I'm planning to change the filter and fluid but am doubtful that will work. The fluid color is nice bright pink and does not smell unusual.

ES350 Transmission - I have the following issue that has happened to me twice now.
When it's cold outside (around -10C or below), I start the car and let it run for about 1 minute. I pull out of the parking lot and drive down the street for a very short distance and stop at the intersection and wait to turn left. This only happens when I wait for a minute or more. I go to turn left and the car feels like it has no power and stays in 1st gear all the way up to 4000 rpm and then shifts. After this the car is totally fine and it shifts at the normal 1500 rpm or so going about 15km/hr. When I'm sitting at the intersection waiting to turn, the car is idling at about 1200 rpm or so while the car is warming up.
I've tried many times to recreate the issue but I couldn't do it because I never let the car sit and idle. If it's constantly moving with stop and go it's fine.
I called the Lexus dealer to ask about this and they told me the first thing to do is change the transmission fluid because it could be low or dirty. The car is 6 1/2 years old (July 2006) with 58,000km on it. They said the transmission fluid should be changed at the 6 year interval. They also asked me if I had the car in the shift manual mode (which I didn't) because it seemed to exhibit this behaviour.

Replaced the 2002 ford explorer 4x4 traction control module because of a shudder in first gear. With the new module the shudder disappeared but now the truck shifts into 4wd by itself and stays there. I am now on my 2nd new module because I returned the first one thinking it was defective.
If I cycle the 4x4 high switch and the 4x4 auto switch, the truck switches back int 2wd but on for a moment then goes back into 4wd. I don't get a 4x4high indicator light but I can hear and feel it is in 4wd. Almost like it thinks the truck needs work with the traction. I have now disconnected the module completely and the trucks runs/shifts beautifully in 2wd. I know my transmission is good. BTW, I have no trouble codes.
Do I have a bad speed sensor somewhere? and How do I trouble shoot for it?

I had the tranny/transfer case flash done sometime ago, which yielded smoother driving in "D" mode. However, I noticed that when braking in "S" mode, the downshifts actually cause the car to surge forward strongly. It's disconcerting enough that I now avoid driving in "S" mode unless I need to merge into traffic quickly; even then, I prefer shifting manually instead.

Shifts slowly or stays in shifting mode longer than necessary. Must stop accelerating and wait a few seconds until the shifting is complete. Does something need adjusting?

I am getting to the point with this car that I can't stand driving it This thing where the transmission downshifts as I slow down and come to a red light is the most obnoxious feeling I've ever experienced in a car. What's worse, is when I go to speed up again and it's in the middle of one of its downshifts and hick up so bad it feels like it's can fall out of the bottom of the car. I'm done trying to deal with Toyota dealerships, all they do is tell me that Toyotas don't have transmission problems and that my car is fine unless it kicks on a light.
I feel like if this transmission was reprogrammed to act more like a normal transmission Like the electronically controlled transmission that was in the 1995 Alexis that I sold a few months ago, or my wife's 2006 solara or the 2008 I asked to 50 I used to have, the car would be fine. But this thing is neurotic, jerky, and unpredictable.

Ok so here is my problem now. I'm sure its in the tramny but not sure what else. My shift from 3-5 has always been a little hard. Yesterday on my way to work I noticed shifts 1 thru 3 were hitting hard. Once I got up to 65 mph it was okay. Then pulling into work when I shifted to reverse it didn't go into gear right away and then it would hit into gear. Later that evening on my way home from work it was shifting the same but seemed worse. Then my tow/haul light started flashing and it seemed like the torque convertor wouldn't lock in. It would just stay in 5th gear and the more throttle I gave it the rpms would go up but I would only get a little response from it. Then a few miles down the road it just completely shut off on me. It will not even try to turn over. I could also hear a noise coming from underneath the truck. Something ive never heard before. I really need to figure this out

I still have the original Pirelli Scorpion tires on my 2010 Touareg (30,100 Miles). For the last year or so the tires have become extremely noisy. Before the warranty expired I made the dealer check to make sure there is nothing wrong with the wheel bearings or the drive train and of course they told me everything is fine. I had an alignment done about 3,000 Miles ago since the tires showed a little uneven wear.

We have a 2007 Limited that we love everything about except the way the transmission downshifts to first gear when it seems to me it should stay in second. My inlaws have a 2007 XLS and it doesn't do this. This is our third Avalon and the only one to do this. The dealer we bought from says this is normal but I strongly disagree. Is there a service bulletin on this or what else can be done.

I've noticed lately in auto mode (not in sport mode) when I'm going downhill on a section (doing maybe 45-50 mph) of road and apply the brakes, the transmission wants to downshift automatically to 5th gear. I know in Sport mode if you are not using paddle shifters this seems normal. I don't think this is normal in just auto mode, non sport.
I don't think mine is normal as I don't remember it downshifting this much in auto mode. I'm thinking fluid level needs to be checked. I know there is a sensor in the transmission that senses the angle of the car so not sure if it's being overly aggressive or not.
