Touareg :: Tire Rumble / Drumming At Speed
Aug 2, 2005
I have new Contis on 19 inch wheels. When the V8 Treg gets to 80 mph the kickback rumble and drumming is loud and firm. No way this vehicle is going to 125 with me in it. Alignment was checked befoer installation of new tires. Is this common? Is this due to the air suspension system?

2002 Nissan Maxima with 125K miles. When going around a curve to the left there is a noticable rumble or vibration in the right front tire area. Going straight at high speeds is smooth and quiet. I checked the large neoprene boot and it does not appear to be cracked or anything but there is a joint(I believe it is either the ball joint or tie rod) that had a lot of grease around it, even away from where it connects. Could that be the problem? I could not get under car to see exactly where grease was coming from. Just a quick check by sticking my hand up there and feeling around.

Whenever I stop my T-Reg (like at a light, etc.) I feel a rumble and can see the RPMs take a quick dip below where the car normally idles (this happens just before the car has fully stopped). Pretty much I feel the rumble for about second and at the same time can see the RPMS rapidly dip. When the car has made its full stop the RPMs come back up and the car idles normally. Sometimes the dip is more drastic than others, but you can definitely feel a rumble or shudder. It almost feels like the rumble associated with a car getting ready to stall; except it never stalls. What is causing this?

I have a 2004 Mustang convertible V6 auto with 140K miles. The car has a rumble-strip like vibration that will come and go at any speed. But seems to be most noticeable at highway speeds when the car hits a ruff spot in the road. It will rumble for a short while the gradually go away. It can be more pronounced sometimes than other times.
The car did hit a curb with the right side front tire, enough so that the tire had to be replaced and did scuff up the wheel pretty good also. Had the one tire replaced, all tires balanced and rotated. Front-end alignment done.
Engine and transmission both seem to operate smoothly. New plugs, wires and throttle body cleaned. New brakes all four. I have noticed the ball joint on the front right does have a small amount of play?

Grand prix has speed related rumble. Seems to come from RF wheel. Wheel bearing feels tight. LF front is barely loose. Car has 150k miles. Should I trust my ear and change RF? Car is quiet at 30mph. Seems to make noise at 40mph+

I recently had my local VW dealership replace the alternator on my 2004 V8 under warranty. Upon picking up the Touareg, there is a noticeable increase in exhaust rumble inside the vehicle as well as a vibration coming from the front passenger's seat and footwell. It isn't any louder outside but my wife and son both agree that it is much louder inside the Touareg.
I brought this up to the service representative and he had the shop foreman take a look. The technician said he didn't find any exhaust leaks and said they dropped the motor without removing any exhaust components. He claimed they just removed the clips on the pipes and dropped the motor and exhaust together. I was left to drive away with no solution.

I'm the loving owner of an amazing '02 RSX. She is just about to hit 100K, and has been completely trouble free. This past sunday, I started it up in the morning and immediately noticed a semi-harsh vibration, with high idle speed (1500ish, normal is 500). If I give it gas, the vibration and rumble noise goes away, but if it put it in reverse, it seems to get worse. After a few miles of driving, the idle speed returns to normal and seems to feel/sound fine. Also of note, if i hit a dip in the road, i get a vibration and engine sound that resembles that of a flat tire. I know this sounds random, but it's the best I can do at describing it. There are no check engine lights, temp is fine, and otherwise seems to be driving great. I initially thought bad spark plug or air filter, but have since thought of vacuum pressure or O2 sensor, maybe even an engine bolt break (from the sound it makes driving into a dip). Could this be as simple as getting a bad batch of gas?

So I got my Haldex fluid and DSG fluid changed two weeks ago. When I picked the car up I noticed a vibration when I was making tight turns. Last week I called the dealer and told them. They said to drive it a bit more to see if it works it self out. But now after getting back from H2Oi, it still is doing it but not as bad.
Its a vibration you can feel and a rumble you can hear when making a tight turn at slow speed. Like turning into a parking space or turning at a stop sign. What would this be? I searched but couldn't find an exact answer.

I have a 2000 Ford Focus with about 145,000 miles on it. When I'm driving I can hear a drumming noise. The faster I go the louder and more fast paced the drumming noise becomes. When I hit about 50 I can hear it, and the faster I go the louder it is. At about 60 the car starts to shake a little bit. When I'm going like 20 or 30 or so, it sounds like I can almost hear my tires turning if that makes sense. The noise is really loud and is starting to concern me. A friend said my CV boots are ripped, but before I take it into a mechanic I would like some non biased opinions.

2003 Ford Explorer 4.6 liter AWD. Having some kind of VERY STUBBORN idle / emission problem. When it started it was an intermittent rough idle, mostly going too low or making a periodic "drumming" sound that could be felt and heard at the air cleaner box. CHeck engine codes were PO 442 evap system leak. I first cleaned and inspected throttle body, mass air flow sensor and idle air control valve. I inspected hoses for leaks, including spraying cleaner to see if I could detect idle changes / leaks. I then replaced Idle Air Control Valve. Did not seem to cure problem . SO took it into Ford Dealership and they smoke tested and said needed Vapor Management Valve and Vent Solenoid. I replaced VMV myself. Idle no longer "rattled" but when driving and braking the idle would drop down very low and sometimes not "kick up" and would die. I then took it back to dealership to have them replace the vent solenoid and reprogram the PCM. Still doing it. They said I might have a defective (new) Idle air control and to replace it- otherwise they dont have a clue.

The tire roar (not engine or wind noise) is unbelievably loud on my car. I drive a lot between San Diego and OC usually at 80+ and it is difficult to have a conversation on the phone and it is starting to drive me a little crazy. I have the all seasons on my car. I noticed a big difference on my S4 and my 550i when I changed tires to PS 2's from the stock Conti's.

Tire screeching noise (the same noise you might hear when traveling at a high rate of speed while turning; as if it's losing grip) when making U-turns or 70-90 degree turns? I notice this every time I make a U-turn or when I'm in parking lots where a higher radius of turning is involved; both at low speeds (probably around 5 mph)
Tires are the Michelins that come from Toyota. Thread is still at least 90% according to my previous service record about 4 months ago and I don't see any abnormal wear on the tires themselves. On another note, I have these same tires on a 2010 Sienna and they do not make any of the noises as stated above.

My 04 treg is displaying "Check tire pressure", and I don't know how to reset, also I do not have an owners manual .

For some strange reason, my T-reg has set itself to 0.00 psi on all four tires. I went into the program and attempted to have it reset. The tire pressure "off" icon appears at the top of the screen and upon start-up the annunciator states that it is recalibrating. How long does it typically take to recalibrate before you get a psi reading on the tires? Shouldn't it come immediately? It still has not recalulated after 5 miles. Should I have VW service take a look at it or is their a simple adjustment I can make?

My avg MPG with mainly city driving was around 14 with 39PSI all the way around. I adjusted my tires up to the recommended 44/36 front/back and I am now at 16+ in the city.

Okay, my newly delivered Treg came with Continentals, and are 225/55 R18s. The dealer had them all inflated to 45psi, however, the sticker in the door indicated that the fronts should be at 39psi and the rears at 45psi. Seems odd to me that the same size tire would have two different standard inflation levels, especially given that the car has the Air Suspension which would level out any unbalance in the ride height fron to rear that they may be trying to compensate for. What pressure are folks running front and rear?

Are you experience abnormal tire wear? - I'm collecting data or tire wear for the Matrix.
My car is wearing the inner most tread only front and rear tires. And I am getting tire noise that increase with speed - it's annoying to say the least.
My mechanic says this is normal - yeah right!

I recently purchased new tires and rims for my Mazda 626 thinking it would get rid ot the loud tire noise (2 rims were bent). However, the noise still exists. I cannot seem top pin point the source of the noise but, it increases with speed.

It's like a tire grinding or shuffling at low parking lot speed, hard right or left turn, more evident when slowly braking during the turn. Dealership claims the negative camber contributes to this phenomenon and that nothing can be done about it.
I realize we have about a 1.5-degree negative camber in 2011-and on IS-F (I have no mods and still running with stock Potenza RE-050s), perhaps this contributes to the feel of the tires at parking speeds.

I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata GLS with 65k miles...it has a 2.4 liter motor (4 CYL), auto transmission. The car currently has 205-65-R16 tires on it with a 95H speed rating. They all have worn down to the wear bars so it's time for replacement.
On my previous cars, I've always had Uniroyal Tiger Paw touring tires because I love how they ride. I found the same tire size for my Sonata. However it has a different speed rating...95T.
The only difference is the letter "T".
EDIT: It currently has Nexen N5000 tires and I bought the car with these tires already on....crappy tires...worn down in only 30k miles.
