Touareg :: Running Gear Fault After Multiple Repairs?
Mar 4, 2006
I have seen a bunch of the older posts. My V8 has been back to shop 4 times for the same problem. I keep getting "new battery cables" new command modules, power draw, etc. but no solutions. I am almost at the end of my warranty and am afraid i will go past without resolution.

I have been getting the "Running Gear Fault Workshop!" message on my MFI almost every day for about a week now. To clear it, all I have to do is shut down and restart and it goes away for pretty much the rest of the day. Is this something that I should get into the shop ASAP? Or can it wait a month until my scheduled 20,000 mile service?

Since we know that most VW service sucks, I'm taking my 04 V8, Nav/Air Susp 35k miles in tomorrow because the whistling/rubbing noise was bad enough on the ride home from work last night that it started freaking me out.
I want to tell the service department to at LEAST check the following:
Whistling: Gets worse with speed and when the car gets warmed up. Sounds more like rubbing when you get going. Check the drive shaft bearing.
Running Gear Fault: Check air suspension piston rings ( I need to look this up again) Something to do with the air bag or air pump seal.
Hesitation: There should be a TSB for this that can be fixed with a computer adjustment.

I have experienced an intermittent fault warning alarm and light that comes on sometimes right after starting my 04 Touareg V8 with air suspension: "Fault: Running Gear Workshop". It has been to the dealer once and they could not find anything wrong so they reset the alarm and since it has continued.

Once upon the time "Stop Fault Running Gear" appeared on central display in my T-reg V6TDI3.0 model 2006 with air suspension. What does it means? It happened only two times, once in snow off-road driving, second on the off-road testing area. I take the car to the dealer, but what does it means.

Took the wifes Treg in today for:
1. Crazy vibration at idle (feels like a V8 running an aggressive cam!
2. Running Gear Fault light on at random
3. Loud "ting" noise under WOT (sounds like a soda can in a bicycle wheel.
4. Onstar - Service not recognizing spoken numbers when trying to dial
5. Air Compressor - works for 5-10 seconds then shuts off, have to restart vehicle to get another 5-10 seconds of air
I had the service manager take a ride and identify all the complaints (other than the compressor and the Running Gear Fault)..he said he will stay on top of it. If you recall, last time I took it in for the vibration at idle, I was told that since no fault codes were present, their is no problem. When sitting at a light your head is literally bobbing up and down, everything loose in the car is shaking...just horrible.
They should have it for a while. I got a Treg V6 as a loaner and actually like it better than the V8 (my wife disagrees). Power is onpar with a vehicle of this size/weight. Felt great, but handed the keys to the wife and grabbed mine and RAN!!!!

On the way I get a msg saying that there was a gear fault. Not sure what it is and I can not find anything using the search. What this may be. After restarting the egg, the message has gone away.

Car was taking 3-4 seconds to turn over when I started it one night. After that, flashing CEL and then CEL stayed. Car idles ridiculously rough, thought it was just a coil pack but seems to be a lot more. What is going on with my car?
Performance mods:
APR intake (stage 1&2)
SPM track edition turboback
Stage 2 revo software
R8 coilpacks and NGK plugs put in 9-10k miles ago
Have 52k miles on the car if that matters

This started with the blinking compass (didn't think much of it)... then i got the "Running Gear Workshop" fault (brought it in 3 days ago and they said they fixed it)... but today the "workshop" fault returned, the voltmeter went dead and blinker indicators in the dash went dead (even though the blinkers are functional).
Boston VW just told my wife the "battery is fine" and then admitted they have "really have no idea what's wrong with it. 2004's are a mystery because they were released before the 'bugs' were worked out"... but they would be happy to get us a rental car (and have us pay for it) and they will try and figure it out.... (probably turn it on and off a bunch of times till the problems go away).

I have an early V 8 04 Touareg with over 60,000 miles. I have had no serious problems and it has been remarkably reliable until recently. I have had multiple "running gear workshop" faults related to the air suspension in the last month.

Got 2 warning lights today in the V10
1) Running Gear
2) Brake Assist
Vehicle is running fine otherwise... Will a Vag Com clear these?

The vehicle is a 2004 Jetta MK4 1.8t.
Last thing I had replaced about 2 months ago was the Solenoid valve, the MAF and Solenoid hose. Car ran fine for about a month, and bam...engine light came back on, along with the ASR light. At first it was saying "cat converter" so I researched that, and what a surprise, it spoke about being a $1k piece to replace. NOTHING HAS BEEN CHEAP ON THIS CAR, and I'm losing my mind.
The latest adventure happened today coming back from the gym. Car started jerking (which has been normal since every now and then the ASR light will come on, which I'm told is the traction control light. Causing the car to jerk. Simple fix is pulling over, shutting the car off, and turning it back on. That always clears it, and then I'm back on the road.) but instantly it lost power. It wont shift, but the traction control light didn't come on. I plugged my OBD2 tool up, and came back with these fault codes:
P0420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
P0753: Shift Solenoid "A" Electrical
P2637: Torque Management Feedback Signal A
I'm going to go to these guys tomorrow, but I would just like to get an educated guess on what might be going on, so I don't look like a lost dog while they're figuring out what to do next. These guys seem knowledgeable, but they're missing something since I've been in and out of their shop several times and still getting my traction control light on at random times, and now all 3 of these codes.
Does that Solenoid code have anything to do with the Solenoid valve they put in? I was told that cleaning the throttle body and the cat converter might work. Would those be cheaper options to consider, and see if that works?
I also read that unplugging the alternator and plugging it back in, then cleaning the male and female with electrical cleaner might work. I was told about a month ago that my battery barely passed. Could this be causing any of my issues? I also did a log while I was driving, but all that's showing up is a google map document.

I have a 2008 Sedona with the following trouble codes: P0018, P0300, P0302, P0304
I have replaced the coils and plugs, a torn air intake hose, and a camshaft position sensor for the side of the engine with even numbered cylinders.
It still runs rough has a blinking CEL, and gives the same codes.
I found that unplugging any of the myriad of sensors under the hood will keep the ECM in open loop so that it runs like a dream, but as soon as they are plugged back it, the trouble comes back. I used that fact to my advantage to drive the car to the mechanic a few miles away.
After running diagnostics, he says the ECM is bad based on the fact that the number 2 and number 4 fuel injectors stop pulsing after a couple minutes of idling. He says they are not even getting a signal from the ECM. He does not have the equipment necessary to flash a new ECM and recommends going to the dealership for a new one and getting it flashed there.
My question is, if I am being lied to, what do I need in terms of equipment to get a used ECM, install it and flash it with my VIN myself? If such equipment is cost prohibitive, can I contact one of these companies that sells ECMs and have them send me one preprogrammed with my VIN?

I bought my 2001 Jetty w/2.0 only yesterday. While I was looking under the hood this morning, I noticed there was no fans running while engine was going so I took a trip to local auto parts store. O'Reilly's hooked up my Jetty and told me there was four error codes but they weren't sure what they meant. Here are the codes: P0302, P0301, P1128,and P1580. I have no clue of what these errors mean. I am not familiar with Volkswagen at all and there are no volkswagen dealerships close.

I was driving and the red BRAKE came on flashing and it beeped. Then the message came on saying Emergency Brake Failure - See Manual. Then the Emergency Brake light came on. Next the Antislip light came on. After a few miles another light came on - ESL or something like that. Then the ABS started kicking in almost every time I stepped on the brake. Later the trans stuck in 3rd gear.
Wouldn't upshift or downshift - even in TIP mode. I took it to the dealer the next day and they couldn't find anything wrong, so they gave it back to me and said to call baco or bring it in if it does it again. Then a week later it did the same thing except getting stuck in 3rd. Took it back again. This time the Emergency brake light was still on. They have had it since yesterday and still can't find anything wrong.
I suggested looking for a bad ground connection somewhere. They say they have done that. Battery is original but starts just fine. Also suggested battery cables.
It's a '07 B6 Wagon - 3.6L TIP ....

Recently "acquired" AB Fault that would not go away. Upon routine 10k service, here is what was found out. If you move the passenger front seat within the first few seconds, the self-tests (including determination of seat empty to automatically turn off passenger airbag) get confused and a fault code is thrown. Fault will not go away until reset by VW service (or presumably VAG-COM can do this).
The recommended "fix", at this point, is to not mess with the seat adjustment for 10sec after ON. There is no written information on Touaregs, apparently, but same problem is documented in a Technical Bulletin for New Beetle. A relevant quote from that document is: "Volkswagen Technical Service is investigating the following condition. After switching ignition ON, the Airbag Monitoring indicator light stays illuminated and DTC 02511 014 - Seat Occupied Recognition Control Module Fault - is stored in DTC memory.

So got a check engine last night.... Dealer cleared it today and said it was "just a fault in the cat" "probably due to moisture or a dip in the temperature".... I'm still awaiting the code as my wife just left the dealer. I was also told that if the check engine light comes right back on then they know to replace the cat. However in my case, I was lucky and the fault just cleared with the VAG...

Well, I didn't get 10 miles from the dealer before the air pressure monitor fault hit. I had asked them to check this in advance and my salesperson said that only some T-regs have it and that there is no way to know until it happens. Was the dealer right? Or could they have saved me this additional 1-day hassle of having the problem fixed?
