Touareg :: Radio And Nav Muted - How To Turn Off Mute Function
Aug 7, 2007
My Dad just bought a 2004 v10 and has somehow messed up the mute function on the car. He Now has both the Radio and the Nav muted and cannot figure out how to fix the situation. He doesn't like to use the computer and asked me to figure it out. I'm sure I could stumble into it if I wasn't 800 miles away.

I am having come from owning a stream of Hondas and Toyotas where one could separately turn off radio whilst using navigation, I was wondering if there was something similar for the Discover Pro system with Navigation on my GTI. Is turning the volume knob all the way down the only way to mute? I know that the non-navi Discover Pro systems have a convenient Mute button where the Navi button normally is for the systems equipped with navigation. I feel like there would be a simple solution for such a simple task.....

I've just acquired a 2008 Cranberry T'reg V8 with the Techno and Lux packages. Whenever any function on the Nav/Radio unit is activated, the radio turns on. For example, when shifting into reverse, this activates the reverse camera screen -- and the radio also turns on. Likewise, if I turn on the navigation screen, the radio turns on. This is kind of annoying if I don't want the radio on, but want other functions activated. Is there a setting that I'm missing? The only thing I can figure is to keep the volume setting at zero.

So I'm not sure if it's something I did or an actual issue. I've had my t-reg less than a week and I just noticed that for some reason the turn signals don't seem to function properly.
Here's what happens: The signals outside the car (incl. side view mirrors) will work. But I get no clicking noise and the indicators on the dash do not light up (same issue with hazzards). I turned the car on/off and the radio on/off and nothing.
So I turn around and come back home to call my VW dealer, but all of a sudden the signals just started working again after I restarted the car. Did I do something?

Brought the Prius v in yesterday for the 3 yr service. Service advisor was very nice, did not try to sell anything more than an oil change basically. I was concerned the voice prompts do not mute the radio, meaning it is very hard to understand the voice guidance unless you turn down the radio volume. Service advisor first calls and says the Bluetooth is working normally. I clarify that the Navigation voice prompts are the issue. He says he'll call back in a little bit. Calls back and says it is normal. Is this normal? The bluetooth functionality mutes the radio. I don't remember it being like that in the past....

The other day I used the Navigation system because of a city area with a lot of one way streets. I don't used the navigation system very much. It was then that I notice that when the voice spoke, the radio, running in the background, stayed on causing an overlap.
Is there any setting I can use that would mute the radio when the Navigation voice speaks, then put the radio back on after directions have been spoken?

So, I've owned the PiP for 10 days and 140 miles, and this is the first car I've ever owned with built-in navigation (TomTom and Garmin have served me quite well previously). One of the benefits of built-in nav should be the integration of the voice guidance with the audio system. Yet on my PiP, the system does not mute the radio when the voice guidance announces a turn. Am I missing something? Is there a hidden setting? I've searched the manuals fruitlessly so far.

Radio controls no longer function. Only the volume and the seek buttons work. Have to use controls on the steering wheel to make any changes.

On my 1993 Subaru Legacy wagon, when the ignition switch is turned on to engage the starter, normally the power to the windshield wipers and radio is cut off until the key is released. What is happening is the power to the wipers and radio is occasionally delayed by a couple of seconds up to maybe a minute or two. This is happening sporadically, maybe once every other day or so, unpredictable. What is going on?

Silly question but what are the 2 round plastic buttons on the back seat for? They're located on the back support near the lower lumbar regions on each side.

First, the Touareg navigation radio has two AUX inputs, plus a telephone audio input. One AUX input is an AUDIO/VIDEO input. The other is an AUDIO only input. Below is a photo of two Dietz cables connected to the two different AUX inputs:
How to actually connect these cables and what parts are required would be too lengthy a post for this thread. So if you want to know these details, click on the link shown in my signature below.

Looking for a tutorial on how to remove the multi-function switch? I have the, seemingly, common issue of wipers not turning off. I bought the new switch, but don't see how to get it out without taking the whole steering wheel off. I can't get to the screws on it at all. I got the plastic covers off, but can't see how to get the switch out.

I have a 2008 Honda Accord. When I start the engine I hear a muted clacking sound not a whoosh like air and then it disappears after a few moments. This does not happen after I drive the car to the and park it for less than a 3 hours but if parked longer it occurs again.

So I am new to the VW TDI, and I am hearing some noises I am not used to...
First noise, when the transmission is in neutral, clutch pedal not depressed, I hear a noise from the clutch (makes the TDI sound louder than it really is), if I put the car in gear, the noise goes away (even if I put it in neutral and keep the pedal pressed in), sounds like the pressure plate or clutch could be making that noise, is this normal or not ?
Second noise, when accelerating (especially accelerating hard) above 3500 rpm or so the engine makes a weird muted sound, I can't really describe it, maybe like bubbles of air in water would do, but muted ... it's a weird sound !

My 97 Civic DX Coupe has 74,400 miles. In recent months it has started making a grumbling kind of muted creaking sound when I make any hard turn, does so on any 90 degree turn unless I take it slow and gradual. It has never made this sound before so I wondering what is up.

I can't figure out how to mute the navigation system. I found the volume control, but it doesn't have a silent option. How to do this?

I have an '03 Screw which I've noticed now has an intermittent muted beep coming from somewhere in the interior of the vehicle. I've had the truck for 9 years, and this is the first time I've noticed it. It seems to come randomly but no more frequent than 2-3 minutes apart. As I am typically driving the vehicle, I cannot stop to locate the source. It reminds me of the low battery beep on my Blackberry, but like it's tucked away in the console or glove box (I checked - it's not the BB...).
I have a recurring SES light which is attributed to cylinders 1&4 misfire (discussed at length in a different thread), but I don't know what would cause this beep. I have read about the 5x5 "airbag light" beep, but this doesn't seem consistent with that. It does not seem like a repeating pattern - just a single beep, which sometimes varies slightly in length but is consistent in pitch and volume.
It's another thing in the growing list of gripes that are pushing me toward selling it. Just afraid of something big coming along unexpectedly... trying to manage the little things so they don't turn into that big one.

Recently, I lost function of brake lights, turn signals, and hazard flashers. All happened at the same time. Some threads discuss flasher relays, short steering column wiring (position of steering wheel), and fuse failures.
I checked #18 fuse and a few others. All had continuity. I assumed my bulbs were all good. My hazard push-pull switch did not feel right. There didn't seem to be engagement. At this point, there was a good chance that the multi-function column switch had failed so I decided to try replacing it. I'm happy to report that this switch was the cause of all the light function failures and now, all is well again.
Removal is done by prying the key lock switch cover off,, removing three 1" Philips head screws that attach the lower column shield to the upper shield. At that point the upper shield can be completely removed. The lower shield was not totally removed because the tilt lever was left on. The switch is attached to the column with two 3/4" Torx 20 fasteners. The upper is easily accessible and the lower fastener can be removed by pulling the lower column shield down so access can be achieved. The two wiring harnesses have a conventional harness lock to depress and the connectors pull outward from the switch. Installation is the reverse of removal, noting the dowel locator and small plastic dowel on the lower shield.
