Sometimes when i reverse and come to a full stop i sometimes hear a loud thunk..coming somewhere close to the right rear hard to tell since I am in the car when it happens, I'm due for my 10k soon..

My wife just handed me her 2001 BMW X5(165,000 miles...new engine at 97,000) because they offered only $2000 on a trade-in. It still looks great - better than my Tundra with numerous whiskey blisters delivered by misbehaving cows. The Beemer tires are in good shape BUT the car has developed a loud knocking noise in rear end when you accelerate from a full stop (scares the heck out of you because it sounds like the backend is going to fall off). If you accelerate slowly it doesn't always knock, but other drivers try to run over you. Just had the air levelers repaired. My local mechanic thinks it is the drive shaft but not sure and won't touch it until something breaks or falls off. My question is - if it is the drive shaft and it falls off while driving - is this going to be a dangerous problem? Our mechanic doesn't seem too concerned and just doesn't want to tear it apart to check the noise. If possible (financially) I would like to repair it but will have to drive it to a bigger town to have it done. Or should we just throw in the towel and donate it to NPR?

My driver' side window had been making a thunk sound when first lowered from the full closed position for the last 6 months. I opened the door and couldn't see anything wrong. Now it won't go down at all, although I can hear it seem to try when I push the button. The motor is likely shot or some sort of other problem? It is a 20 yr old car and starting to drink oil, so I want to try to fix if possible cheaply.

i am wondering if any other touareg v-10 owners have experienced what i call "slop in the drivetrain"?symptoms: when just crawling off from a dead stop and then letting off of the pedal i can both hear and feel a little clunk whether forward or reverse. its real subtle but its always there if you listen for it. Is this just what they call normal "slash" of the worm gears in the differentials? i would hate to find out later once warranty's gone that i should have done something about it earlier? i have 19,000 miles on it, 70%highway and 30% city driving.

I picked up a mkIV about 2 weeks ago, I've noticed that when the car is warming up that it feels like the transmission makes a *thunk* when coming to a stop. It seems to go away for the most part once warmed up, but every once in a while it will happen randomly after the car is warmed up though. I'm assuming this is the transmission disengaging as the wheels stop turning. Is this something I should be worried about, or is this "normal"...

I've got my 2013 sonata and have noticed over the past couple weeks that after the car has sat for a while and I shift out of park that it makes a thunk/shifting sound that's coming from right below the car. I think it's coming from the gear shaft but I'm not a car expert so I can't be sure, it's more prevalent when I shift into reverse. What it could be? The car is still completely under warranty so I'm fine with making it the dealer's problem.

I just picked the car up at the dealer, after having had the new window regulator installed.
They were just closing service and I didn't think to test the window before I left the lot, but on the way home I put the window down... nice and smooth and quiet.
Then I put it up and there was a loud thunk at the top of the travel. I tried to capture it in the attached video but it isn't nearly as "bass-y" as it is in person. Crappy mic on the phone I guess.
My other three windows have a very soft sound as they reach the top of the travel, nothing like this thunk. What it might indicate?

I described about 3 weeks ago this loud metal sound coming from the exhaust with any revs above 4k at stop or on the road. The car sounds like a Z06 Vette with out the cats on-it is really a loud disheartening sound. The VW stealership replaced the whole exhaust but the sound is still there. Where I should direct them to look??

2007 Santa Fe 2.7 engine
My wife was driving along and she said she heard a loud 'thunk' and then she couldn't accelerate and the engine light came on. I don't know if she had to restart it or what but she finished out her day and made it home ok. The engine light went off. When she got home I put the scanner on it. I have a Actron 9580A. It came up with 3 codes.

From what I've read on here and what the codes tell me I guess I need a throttle position sensor and that a computer update is needed. Is the ECM update something that can be done without taking it in? If I do need someone to update it is the dealer the best place? Can I install the TPS then drive there? Or does it have to be done at the same time? I was just thinking I might save a few bucks doing it myself.
Prior to this the Santa Fe had no codes. I do need to replace the battery which tested bad last month. I think the battery will need to be replaced before doing the update.

The differential inside the trans. of my 91 Corolla 1.6L with 175K grenaded as I was cruising down the highway. Just heard a loud "thunk" and the front wheels locked up. The stock trans is a three speed A131L hooked up to the AE92. The engine still has a lot of life left in it so I will be putting a new transmission in it. This 6th generation Corolla was availabe with a four speed trans. Can I replace it with a four speed trans? I can get the shifter out of a recycling yard but don't know if anything else needs changed-out.
I'd like to get a re-manufactured trans as who knows how the previous owner took care of their transmission if I pulled one out of the bone yard. I'd hate to put in a trans only to have to re-do the job three months later. Are there any reputable transmission re-builders you would recommend? I'm in the Tampa area and am willing to go anywhere in the state for a known good trans.

I just broke my 2000 F350 7.3L 4X4. I never had any shift problems in the 3+ years I've had this truck. 3 days ago, I stood on it to enter the freeway, it dropped into passing gear, then a loud THUNK, a shudder, and no gears whatsoever. I coasted to a stop, checked to make sure the transfer case hadn't jumped to neutral, ran the tranny through all gears, and nothing, truck wouldn't move.
I took the tranny pan off this morning and its clean, just a little fuzzy on the magnet but nothing more than normal for 3 years and 200k miles without service. At this point, I'm thinking its the torque converter let go and won't pump fluid. Tranny Shops only want to sell you the whole assembly, not fix the problem.

Our 2013 RX350 makes an annoying thunking noise, coming somewhere from the rear underside of the car, every time you come to a complete s stop, e.g. at a traffic light. I had a test drive with a mechanic from our Lexus dealership, and he told me that every 2013 RX350 he ever drove made that noise. Is that true?

Sometimes it happens at slow speeds too but it's so random that I know it will never do it at the dealer. I can't say "When I take off fast or stop hard it makes a weird sound" it's a lease and they will probably blame me for whatever is wrong. Sometimes the tranny doesn't feel right either. I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee LTD that made a similar sound and it was bushings but this car has only 4,000 miles on it. What should I do?

The Truck: 2011, 250, 4x4, Super Cab, 6' box, 6.2 with 6R140, currently 40K miles. It did have an 8' plow on it. An 80 year old gent plowed his personal 200' driveway with it for 2 winters before I bought it. You can tell the truck was taken care of, or I wouldn't have purchased it. I have all the service records. He had his local dealer do all of it. Plow and all the controls were removed prior to my purchase.
Scenario: Trucks cold (summer ambient). Driveway has a grade down to road. Doesn't matter if I am nosed or backed in. Start up, back/pull out of driveway on to flat road, and very slowly take off. The 1-2 shift produces a lose thunk sound and sensation, very faint not loud. Almost Like a lose motor mount. Only will do it once, only on the first start and 1-2 upshift. Ive tried to reproduce it after the first occurrence, no luck. If you gas it under the same circumstances it wont do it.
It doesn't necessarily feel like an internal trans problem. More of a "somethings just lose enough to shift or move" problem. Sounds like somethings hitting the frame, core support, cab floor on this slow 1-2 up-shift. Its upfront passenger side. I've spent several hours under it looking for lose items witness rub marks etc...to no avail
Again it only does it after it sits or upon the first start in the AM or when leaving work PM. Not when its warm.

Just purchased a 2010 prius III and had a question about the HSI bar. I didn't notice this at first, but when pressing the gas (from a complete stop) the HSI bar lags a second then turns on without a gradual increase. Is this normal? While the car is in motion the HSI bar is smooth and gradual, but starting from a stop it seems there is a lag before the bar "lights up" sometimes past the middle line. I press the gas gently but it doesn't ramp up gradually. Probably just my OCD kicking in.

I just replaced my my k03s with another one with only 20k on it. After I did this, I noticed a loud screech sound when in WOT. The screech lasts a little bit after i left off the gas when revving in neutral. I've been doing research on here, and I've read that it could be a boost leak somewhere or even the turbo dying. The shaft play is minimal though.

After 12,000 kms of trouble free motoring on my replacement Treg (first one a lemon) it seems to have developed an unusual problem. The best I can describe this prob is that when I go into almost full turning lock (obviously at snail pace speed) the car shudders quite noticeably. The problem occurs intermittently however as of late at least on 50% of occasions. Seems to be worse after reversing uphill a short distance.

My 2011 Lincoln MKT hesitates after a full stop...randomly. After I apply the gas she will hesitate, as if she can't find the right gear, RPM's go out of sight then there's a sudden and hard jerk and away we go! The weather is not a factor...happens anytime anywhere. The cruise control will shut off randomly as well. At times the warning buzzer and light flash on the windscreen that we are about to crash...and there are no vehicles in the way.
It has been to the dealership 4 times in the past 3 months for this and they can't find anything wrong... (Ford does not have a bulletin on this problem either. We've had the car since Feb. 2011 - it has 20,000 miles on it now. Regular maintenance is done as scheduled.)

Car is an automatic 1.8T and has a rough idle when the car is in DRIVE and I am in a full stop. Car also idles rough when in park. Not sure if it is an idle valve stabilizer, or a coilpack? Car does drive well once in motion and does not feel like it lacks power.

When I accelerate from full stop with 3/4 throttle when car gets to 60-70 mph it stops accelerating for 1 or 2 sec, there is is also a little jerk. After that it continues to accelerate normally. The problem is not present if for instance we drive 30 mph and then use 3/4 or full throttle. I talked to dealer and they said there might be a little jerk but nothing more, and it might be solved by software update. In my opinion its definitely not a slightly jerk, car completely stops to accelerate for a moment. Car has about 45 k miles so its almost like new.
