High pitched whirring noise when the climate control fan (compressor?) is running at low speeds. It doesn't seem to matter if the air is on or not. I'd like to know what it cost to fix and if it is covered under most extended warranties.
View 4 RepliesI have had my certified 2010 Prius II, not two because it is a 2010 and 2010 used uppercase roman numerals for model designation, with 82000 miles about 3 months and sometimes when I apply the brakes I hear a high pitched whirring noise. I think the closest thing to compare it to would be a skill saw but not that loud.
View 2 RepliesIn the last few days there has been an intermittent high pitched whirring noise coming from the rear undercarriage of my 2009 Elantra with automatic transmission, at least it seems where it is more pronounced on the outside of the vehicle. The pitch is unaffected by acceleration or climate control changes. It just comes and goes at random. The temperature here has dropped considerably in the last week or so and seems to have started since then.
View 3 RepliesWhen starting in morning (even if weather is warm) or after car has sat for several hours, my 1999 Taurus makes a high-pitched whirring noise. Thought it was a loose fan belt, but mechanic said that was wrong. Have taken it to several mechanics and, of course, it doesn't make the noise after I've driven it there. Have to leave it overnight, which is HUGE problem as I don't live near public transportation. Noise occurs several times as I shift into DRIVE and then accelerate. After that, it disappears, then comes back again, if I leave it sit for several hours. One mechanical friend checked the tranny fluid and said it's fine. Also said it is probably not the tranny but didn't know what it could be. I took it to one of your recommended mechanics, but they couldn't find anything and said they didn't even hear the noise, although I did leave it overnight at their garage. (Won't go back there again.)
View 5 RepliesVery high pitched "whistle"(enough to give you a headache) as vehicle speed increases or fan speed increased. This will not occur on recirculate and will go away if a window or roof is opened.

View 1 RepliesI have a 2001 Toyota 4Runner SR5 with AT and V6 with 70k miles on it with pretty much everything loaded. The car has been trouble free since I got it 3 months ago. However,the past month, the engine has been making a high pitched "squeaking" noise whenever im at a constant speed. If I accelerate or brake, the noise goes away.
I also noticed today that it stays constant no matter what when I am in 4WD mode, but when I am in 2WD it behaviors like I describe earlier. I had the Toyota dealership do a complete lube service and they found two of the belts were "dry" and re-lubricated them however the problem persisted. The noise doesn't happen when im in idle or at a stop either. The noise seems to emanate from the right side of the engine.
Also, do 4Runners have a noisy brake cylinder system? Almost every time I brake I hear this slight "Pssssssssssssssssssss Tick!" sound from the engine. The car brakes just fine and the Toyota dealership found nothing out of the ordinary but i've never heard a car break that noisey before. This a 4Runner trait? What could be causing these two noises, especially the gawd awful squeaking noise from the engine. It never made that noise until just one day..
My '04 started making a high pitched noise from the right front wheel within the last two weeks. It's in the local dealer now and they tell me they suspect a bad right front wheel bearing. I don't see any posts about similar experiences here. I kind of worry that the fact the vehicle is two years old and only has 9200 miles on it may be part of the problem-is infrequent use enough to cause the bad bearings? I drove it infrequently (1-2x/week, sometimes no driving for a week or two) up until the last three months, and now it's being driven daily.
View 10 RepliesReading thru all the squealing noise posts made me want to ask about mine. I have started to notice a high pitched squeal/squeak that occurs while sitting stopped with your foot on the brake...then let off the brake and take off and get this momentary squeak that doesn't continue (at least I can't hear it). It seems to stop once you get going again.
Seems to be coming from the passenger side front. I think I started noticing this after my most recent tire rotation and balance. What the brake wear indicator sounds like or if I will get an icon on the mfi when the brakes need service. The brakes do not squeal when in use. I currently have 27000 miles.
My 337 didn't pass inspection (control arms, inner tie rod, no cat because the guy I bought it from sucked etc) but it sat for probably 3 weeks and I just sold my other car (I was planning on using that $2000 to get the 337 to pass inspection) but I just drove the VW down the street for the first time and it's making some scary sounds.
Basically when I give it throttle there's a high pitched whirring sound and something keeps rattling that sounds like its coming from the engine bay. I'm really freaked out, I'm leaving in two months because I'm transferring to a new college and I need this thing to run perfectly.
It's also shifting a little strangely and if you don't shift absolutely perfectly then it starts to rattle (not like you're about to stall but something completely different) I can't take it to a VW dealer or anything because I'm way over the 15 days past a failed inspection and I can't afford a tow.
I have a 2004 F-150 SCrew Lariat 4X4 with 80K miles. Over the past month or so, every once in awhile there would be a loud metallic "clacking" sound (kind of like sticking a peice of aluminum in a bike's spokes) that would start at higher speeds and would turn into a low pitched whirring gear sound as I slowed down and eventually there would be a thud followed by a sensation of running over a small bump and the noise would be gone. Kind of confusing I know, but that is the best way to describe it. My gut feeling is a wheel bearing or transmission problem....
View 9 RepliesSo my girlfriends Toyota RAV4 (2005) is making a medium pitched whirring noise from the passenger side of the engine compartment. (Same area where the serpentine belt and the alternator and all those goods are located.) The battery warning light is on, solid. I have not had a chance to take my DMM and check voltage but I suspect this is going to be a bad alternator since it is a noise consistent with the RPM of the vehicle and visual inspection of the belt is that it is still in one piece, not frayed, flexible, etc. I didn't rev the engine because I didn't want to freak her (the gf) out. My plan is to test voltage before she does anything rash like take it to the dealership which she is already planning on doing but the noise concerns me since noises tend to come from things that move which is probably an indication of some sort of mechanical failure and that tends to cost money. Luckily it's her car.

The sound seems to come from the middle of the car. The car is at the dealer and I want to hear some unbiased post regarding this.

View 2 RepliesThe vehicle is a 2005 Touareg 4.2 v8 with 81k miles. I purchased from a dealership and have been having nothing but problems from the day I purchased it. (2 months ago) the day after I purchased it check engine light came on, headlight range light, air bag light, and now this noise I have owned about 15 vag cars and also own vagcom no codes pertaining to this noise... Above 10-15mph there is an intermittent whine (high pitched) for the most part the noise is there most of the time.
It does not stop when in neutral not effected when the air is off or on, does not change if you down shift, no change if the wheels are turned. I broke down and took it to a very trustworthy Audi shop in the area and you guessed it the entire way there no noise... The tech drove it no noise so I had them flush and fill the trans as it was due for it anyways. They informed me that it was dirty and I figured that it may have taken care of it. Well after a 20 minute drive home the noise started again! I took a short video....
I have a 2002 B5.5 Passat sedan. 140K.
Inside my passat, when I run my heater on #1 speed setting there is a high pitched squeak but it goes away on the #2 speed setting. It hasn't been a constant annoyance but enough to want me to fix it now. [URL]....................
High pitched noise when car is running at idle and when not on the gas. Whenever I accelerate it goes away. Pitch/Loudness seems to be higher with RPM's. Could be coming from front of the car.

I read some other posts about this and fully disconnected my aftermarket radio. I'm pretty sure it is not a ground loop as no power to HU shouldn't still create the whistle.
What I have:
I have an EIP aftermarket street exhaust. I checked the exhaust to see about the flapper, but I don't believe I have any of the items involved - maybe I'm wrong. After some more reading it sounds like a vacuum leak as it goes away upon acceleration. I need identifying what vacuum hoses are still in place/clamped off with having an aftermarket exhaust.
I do not have a CAI, just a K&N drop in.
Our V6 just turned 40k and it's developed some interesting sounds. First of all, from time to time at highway speed a whirring/whinning sound has developed. I was driving down the road the other night, no rain, about 60 degrees temp outside, and between 50 and 80 mph this noise seemed constant. I turned off the radio, turned off the climate control and the problem still existed.
It *sounds* like a drive train noise (my old jeep would make a sound when it was in a low gear that is similar). Second, also intermittent, a clicking relay from inside the dash on the drivers side. The frequency and rate are inconsistent and I can't correlate it to anything happening while driving.. just highway driving.
I did a search for this symptom but didn't see anything that sounded right... High pitched squeal from right front wheel well area (sounds like a tea kettle actually).
Starts at 10+mph and is speed variable (faster=louder)... but not effected by applying the brakes (so doesn't seem to be related to the brake assembly)... It doesn't happen all the time... but getting more frequent... annoying...

I have a intermittent noise from the center of my touareg. It is a squeel or high pitched rubbing sound and seems to be related to load on drive line. I have heard about center driveshaft bearing problems, could this be it.What repairs are available
View 2 RepliesI have been getting a loud, high-pitched mechanical-sounding noise coming from the middle of the dash, near the CD player. It lasts only a few seconds, but it scares the sh!t out of me every time! It happens out of the blue after I've been driving for a few minutes about every 3 weeks or so. The sound is almost impossible to describe...but if you've had it happen you probably know exactly what I'm talking about. It happened today while I was listening to a CD, so I can't imagine it's the player that's doing it. Non-Nav/Air V8
