Over the last 2 wks or so I have been hearing grinding noises out of the right rear brake. 1 day it sounds like it was metal on metal. Think is just all the road salt catching between the brake pads?
View 10 Replies2008 Passat Komfort Wagon with 34,500 miles. Started to get grinding sound when I applied brakes, which diminishes as I drive. Thought it was rust, but sound is very loud and sounds just like pads are gone and digging into rotors. The brake warning light is not on.
Dealer told me rear caliper was closing unevenly and recommended service---not covered by warranty of course. When I picked-up car same noise as before. The service manager told be that the car was just washed and the rust built up in the last hour---I could believe some built-up, but the sounds made my teeth ache. When we went for a test drive the noise got quiter, but was still apparent. The SM told me this is a "normal" noise. I have had many cars with disc brakes, dating back to a 1960 Jaguar; none have made this "normal" sound.
Is it just me or is this an ABS thing? during a snow storm i was going about 25mph and had applied the breaks and started making a grinding noise... if it is the abs how are you suppose to work with the response time for a quicker stop.
View 2 RepliesHere's my issue, after a full break job my right front brake began to grind. Curiously it wouldn't grind initially after breaking soon after start up. I could go on and slow break for quite a distance, but soon after a hard brake or just slow breaking long enough the grinding begins. I've taken the car back to Firestone three times and even after a few adjustments or cleaning the problem persist... I've starting to feel bad for Firestone and embarrassed to be holding on to this 99 Chevy. I can't continue to drive this small car that sounds like a MTA bus while braking.
But I digress... I did notice, purely by accident (or it may be a mere coincidence), a few times the ABS light came on and during those periods the grinding was less abrasive. This leads me closer to believing the issue is with the caliper.
Coming to a left turn signal I was anticipating it turning red on me, and I drove into the turn lane briskly 30mph and then applied brakes as I made a u-turn. It sounded like a cross between dragging the front air dam and metal on metal brake grinding as I made the turn. Stopped immediately and did not scrap the air dam and all front end components checked out, okay. Car is driving just fine now, has only done this once.
View 18 RepliesI noticed yesterday a sound, like a grinding sound, *sometimes* as I apply the brakes to stop. I'm at 68k. The noise only happens when the brakes are applied so I suspect there is an issue with my brakes again.
Some BACKGROUND info: At around 60k (or 8 months ago roughly), the front pads were replaced after the brakes were squealing and a pulsating brake pedal when stopping. The pads were replaced by a dealer. In addition, both front/rear rotors were turned at the same time. Rear pads had 40% at the time and were not replaced.
Some weeks later the pulsation came back and I went back again and they machined them again. For this current issue I was thinking about taking the car to someplace local (not a dealer) and getting a free brake evaluation of what is going on.
I'm also concerned that all this machining the dealer did to eliminate the pulsation may have decreased the life of the rotors and perhaps they need replacement now.
1950 cadillac - standard drums on all 4 corners.
I put new wheel cylinders on each drum, and replaced the drivers front hose, as it was clogged. The passenger side I left because it works and doesnt leak. I've cleaned all the brake surfaces, shoes and drums, and bled everything.
When I brake, and only when I brake, the front right makes a grinding noise and the car pulls to the right.
I tried tightening the star wheel today to bring the shoes inward in hopes that would equalize brake pressure up front, but when trying again today, I got that grinding sound still.
There is no scoring or gouges on the shoes, drum, and the inner and outer ball bearings seem fine - round chrome balls with no discoloration, no gouges on the spindles. Granted I don't drive this far at all, especially now that I have this grinding.
How can I really tell if its the ball bearings? It only makes the grind when I am on the brakes.
I thought I'd be free of problems having bought a new Toyota Rav4 in Jan. In June, with less than 3K miles, my husband had a (BIG) fender bender (turns out his meds made him blank out, he was driving at 10-15 mph) (and he is going on 80). Repairs cost over 3K, but I was able to drive it to the dealer. Soon after I got it back a month later, I started hearing a brief grinding noise under the accelerator, at speeds of 20-30 mph. Mostly after I took my foot off the accelerator, once or twice after I took my foot off the brake. This noise sounds like brakes grinding, appears very sporadically and briefly. I took it to the dealer and of course they could find nothing wrong, said everything checks out. They said to bring it back when it's doing the noise. Which it does maybe once a week, for a second or two. sheesh.What to do? I actually want to start all over, I do not want to drive with my ear to the gas pedal. (My husband now only drives in town!)
View 5 RepliesGuys, my 2005 V8 is giving me the annoying sign (making a squeal noise while driving that actually goes away when I apply the brakes) that my pads are wearing out. "Just brakes" quote me $89 to change the pads. That sounds too good to be true.

We recently took our car in to get some service work done and the mechanic informed me that he thinks the tranny is starting to go and just baby it....Fast forward a month the wife is driving the car, she said at around 40mph 2k RPM and the RPMs just drop after hearing a screeching/grinding noise....
Then she tried to apply throttle and it redlined...She said it would shoot up in RPM and not go over 30mph, she used the triptonic to get home and was able to get up to 45..Sat for a bit and I drove it, everything seemed ok..Shifts good, stops fine, no weird noises, etc....
Car is a 2002 Jetta 1.8t w/ 148k miles, regularly maintained, never had tranny oil flushed..
After putting my Ford Ranger in park and pressing down on the E-break to get the news-paper or mail. I've noticed that there is a consistent squeaking coming from the back drum brakes when the brake pedal is applied. But only for a certain period of time; then the squeaking stops.
View 8 RepliesMy right rear brake is making a grinding noise when the brakes are applied. I took the drum off a couple weeks ago and the shoes are just a bit worn. Just getting into the numbers printed on the side of the shoe material.
I could not see any thing that would be making the metal on metal sound. Are there any wear indicators on the OEM shoes?
I lost a brake line on my pickup truck, had it replaced a couple days ago. Occasionally, when i apply the brakes i get a brake chatter. It has occurred 3-4 times in the last 4-5 days. No pattern to it happening.
View 4 RepliesI have a 2007 Toyota Camry 4 cylinder and the ABS light comes on intermittently. Not only does the light come on, but sometimes when I apply the brakes, the brake pedal makes a grinding, vibrating sound that I can hear and feel under my foot, and feels as if the brake pedal is going to go all the way to the floorboard. If I quickly pump the brake, it stops that sound and the brake works fine.
I have taken the car to O'Rileys and Firestone and they put it on the analyzer. Two codes come up which indicate that the right front ABS was bad and/or an open circuit. I replaced the ABS sensor, but the problem described above persists. I took it back to Firestone and the same codes displayed. Firestone said it was an open circuit and that I should take it to the Toyota Dealer. I called the Dealer and they want $135 to analyze the car. They won't tell me what they will do in the analysis. I also took it to Just Brakes and they kept it for 3 days and could not or did not do much other than suggest I take it to the Dealership. I have read that the Dealership will probably say the ABS computer needs to be replaced ($1,000). I have also read that the 2007 Camry Hybrid ABS brake system has been recalled, although my Camry is NOT the hybrid.
There has had two fender benders on the left front side and the right front passenger tire hit a curb which bent the tire, but the tire has been balanced (not sure if the wheels were damaged in these minor accidents or if the wheels could be causing this?) Other thing that occurred right before the ABS light started coming on, and the brake issue, is that the air conditioner went toes up, and there were small metal fragments within the air condition housing unit. I replaced the whole A/C unit. I haven't been able to assess if one would have anything to do with the other, but it is interesting that the ABS and brake issue all started within a few days of the A/C unit being replaced.
Recently whenever I am backing out of the garage, the brakes pop when applied. I have only noticed this when backing.
View 1 RepliesI just purchased a 2012 GX Ultra! So in the contract from the Toyota dealer (where we purchased the truck from) offered a 36 day "warranty" which says they will cover any problem that we experience from time of purchase to the 36 day mark.
The vehicle came to us clean, one owner, and the Lexus warranty for the 4 yr OR 80,000 KM just ended. The warranty just reached the 4 yr mark and has only 78,000 KM. Firstly we we called Lexus Canada to try to get info on extended warranty or as they call it "ECP". They said the local dealer usually does provide the warranty in a short time frame after expiration like this.
Secondly we are experiencing a sort of rumble when the brakes are applied. We felt this rumble on the test drive, and told the sales person we wanted this fixed before we drove off the lot. When we did leave it still had the rumble. Now we might think it is a mechanism within the car to alert the driver the brakes are being applied.

Yesterday I had my snow tires installed at Costco. Immediately afterward I noticed that the rear brakes squeak when I apply the brakes. I took the car back to Costco and asked them if they applied the proper torque or if anything unusual appeared during the change-over. They said no.... I loosened and retorqued the wheels and no change......they still squeak when I apply the brakes.
Questions: I assume there are wear indicators on the rear pads, could this be causing the squeeling? If so, aren't they supposed to squeel all the time when they reach their limit? I haven't inspected the wear yet...... What the tolerance is for the amount of lining on the pad. Could this be a rotor problem? I"m not feeling any pedal vibration.

View 6 RepliesMy R has recently started making some horrible grinding noises and was getting a ton of vibration in the pedals. I let it sit after I got home that night and made an appointment for vw. Blah blah blah
It turns out the previous owner had an aftermarket clutch installed in the car, and the flywheel and clutch were reinstalled with all hardware finger tight. I drove the car for a yaer and a half, 30k, without knowing until the sound started.
Ive been told the clutch is now destroyed and warranty wont cover it. VW says I need a new flywheel and clutch kit. Since they aren't covering it, I am thinking maybe upgrades are in order.
Should i stay with oem flywheel and clutch? Or go with a lightened flywheel and stage 1 clutch etc. Is it worth it to upgrade?
Mods are c2 race file, evoms cai, koni coils, usp hi flow cats in the test pipe, short throw kit. I will have cams installed at some point and it might see sc down the road. No turbo or big hp.
While driving recently I experienced what felt like continued acceleration when I applied the brake. It was only a fleeting moment, but was scary nonetheless.
View 2 RepliesOur gen 1 has developed a (currently minor) noise issue when braking. I'd like to sort it out before it becomes serious.
The brakes are still strong, and the regenerative system appears to be working. When the brakes are applied (even gently) there is a pulsing raspy sound, seems like it is coming from the front, driver's side. It is more rapid at higher speeds, and louder during rapid deceleration. I guess I'd call it 'grinding', although this is much less unpleasant than the classic 'grinding brakes' I've heard on other cars.
In any other car I would figure a warped rotor or worn out brake pad. But I had imagined that the regenerative system handled light braking, and conventional brakes took over beyond a certain threshold. Now I'm hoping they work in tandem, even on gentle braking and this is just a boring, simple pad issue.
