Touareg :: HID Has Lack Of Brightness
Mar 11, 2004
My first experience with Xenons was on my BMW 330xi which was a 2000 model year. (Maybe 2001, I can't even remember now.) The Egg's Xenon's seem quite similar in both brightness and coverage, as well as the sharp cutoff that they are famous (or infamous) for. So, thought I, HIDs (xenons) are HIDs, are HIDs. Wrong-o.
I was recently driving behind a Porsche Carrera at dusk. We both had our lights on. His lit the road awash in white. Mine were barely visible on the road. As I said, it wasn't dark out yet.
A friend of mine just purchased the RX330 (butt ugly from the rear). He complained to me about, among other things, the xenons having an incredibly sharp cut off. He's never had HIDs before. We switched cars for a short, few mile drive. While I saw what he was talking about, in that when the car was pointing downhill even a slight bit, the levelers had the lights facing so far downward that they barely lit up 20 feet in front of the car. I felt mine was slightly better. However, his side to side coverage was far superior, and the brightness of his lights were far superior, being much whiter also.

The dash brightness dimmer pot. The roller doesn't have much tactile feedback or resistance, so when I rolled it just beyond maximum brightness, the dash lights flickered and went out. [Of course this could also be a feature I'm not aware of... ] Fortunately, dash lights came back on when reducing from max. Best to just find a comfortable setting below max brightness and leave it alone. - IMHO.

One area we have been disappointed with is the lack of sufficient tension on the windscreen wipers. The local dealer broke the plastic replacing the blade which did nothing to correct the problem. The rear wiper is just as bad, leaving a large area never swiped. The driver side blade leaves a large half bubble shaped area un-wiped in front of the driver.

Any way to increase the brightness of the outside temperature display? During the day, when the sun is shinning, it's impossible to read....even if I take my sunglasses off.
It's almost distracting as texting having to stare at the display trying to read the numbers.
The drivers side set temperature display (heat/a-c) is super bright but yet the rest is very difficult to see.
I have 20/20 vision.
I tried the dash brightness adjustment (odometer reset) but that has no effect.

I drive a 2014 GS but I am driving a GS loaner now that has a newer nav and no manual in glove box. How do I increase brightness of the nav screen? Also is there a way to switch back to 2D maps from 3D?

It's too bright for nighttime driving: The reflexion onto the dash makes it look like I have a constant ghostly green bridge overhead at all times through the windscreen.

I have turned the instrument panel lighting brightness all the way down, but at night, it's still too bright. Can I turn it down more using VAG-COM?

Is there anyway to adjust the brightness of the dashboard (speedometer, tachometer, etc) display when the headlights are not on??? Sometimes if its just cloudy outside and there's no reason to have the headlights turned on, the display is nearly impossible to see. The numbers are not illuminated, only the needles. It is only until after you turn the lights on that you can see the numbers. Is there anyway to have the numbers illuminated without the headlights on???

I've recently came across a site that sells a bypass unit that would allow me to bypass the DRL brightness adjustment settings to "Full" brightness even when the headlights are on. Instead of the "dim" mode when the headlights are on.

On my 2007 GS350 I have an annoying (or) normal problem where the Nav screen has to warm up a little, like an old tube radio, to full brightness when I start up the car on a colder morning. It takes about 15 to 20 seconds. My Lexus dealer first said it was normal but eventually gave up and replaced it. It still seems to be about the same.

I have the Non-Nav with just Display Audio. I have noticed that the display tends to fade in & out. Even at night when the lights are on- I keep the dash on the bright side- the DA/radio info fades. It's still legible but wondering is there a way to fix this? I couldn't find anything in the manual about adjusting the brightness.

I noticed the dash lights go from bright to dim depending on the brightness outside. If i go under an overpass even at freeway speeds it will dim down and then come back up during the day. Even if I have my head lights on during the day it does that. Is there anyway to stop this?

On our 2012 Sonata all stock, the radio display screen is far dimmer than the rest of the lighting. When putting the lighting at a safe level for night time driving (ie not blinding), the display screen is far too dim. In order to see it, the dash lights need to be almost all up.
Any way to adjust? BTW, the radio knobs and preset lights are fine. It is only the diplay screen. This is NOT an issue on our 2012 Tucson. That one works perfectly. I flipped through all the obvious controls and found nothing

I was heading to the gym tonight and noticed that when I had my headlights on the nav screen stays white and does not go into the dark mode it is supposed to with the headlight on. I pressed the display button and there was no indication that there was an option to go back and fourth between day and night mode as usual . Only the option to adjust brightness and contrast. I do have the option to turn off the screen but this is annoying.

is there anyway to adjust the brightness of the lcd info and nav displays. I know the light dimmer adjusts it but not in relation to the gauges, if I turn the screens down enough I can barely read the speedometer. is there a way to adjust just the screens?

So I have a 2003 Chevy Impala Base 3.4L V6 and for some odd reason when I turn down the brightness for my dash the lights on the radio buttons and screen becomes brighter and when I brighten the dash the lights on the stock radio lights go out. I started to notice this after the BCM was replaced.

This is a van (2000)used to transport people for leisure. It has 270k. When she is warmed up and rolling the power output is impressive for the vehicle size and weight. A half punch on the gas will push your shoulder blades into your seat.(I've never floored it)
It has a fairly consistent "lack of power issue". When she is just starting out for the first run. And about 3/4s of the time after she has been sitting at idle for an extended period(already warm). The lack of power is severe. If a hill of note is involved I have to turn around and go the other way. The lack of power normally is dealt with by pulling over and shutting the motor down. Usually, 2 mins or longer is the best. If I am in a hurry and don't go full 2 mins I get improved power but not really full. She will clear herself up then as we go."Refinding" her power always comes with a BIG load of smoke output. She does smoke pretty good when cold, of course. But normal driving not very bad. Smoke is of the whitish to light gray in color.
This has been a problem for the 3 years I have owned the car. She is cold blooded. When I plan to drive the car I plug in the block heater otherwise, I think I am using 2 gallons just to get her warmed up to idle. I just started using the diesel Kleen fuel additive. Got it at Napa. Haven't seen much improvement or change of note at this point.
Other than this problem and the wheel almost falling off once...it's been a perfect rig.The mechanic has not been able to come up with much. Although at the last oil change the computer code mentioned something about a temperature sensor? I have not yet followed up with him about that.

I have a 2003 Grand AM GT 3.4 with 166,000 miles, its hard to explain but will try. When your first taken off the car seems like its holding back, but then once you hit 3,000 rpm's with the gas pedal still pressed the same amount the car takes right off like it has a power band. Same thing regardless happens all the time under 3,000rpm.
Going down the highway at 70 and you start to go up a slight incline, you give it a little gas and you can feel the car having lack of power, then you press a bit more on the gas and it kicks down a gear and goes. Then back in the same situation once back under 3,000 rpm.
The car idles normal, check engine light will come on once in a while, but goes back off before i have a chance to see what code it is. I do notice when the check engine light comes on, you can feel the car lack power for just a second. I just replaced the o2 sensor today thinking it was that.

So woke up this morning take kid to school, got about 1-2 miles from home and engine light came on and had to switch to tiptronic because seemed the engine was struggling to move the car and downshift and was able to drive somewhat fine. but at stop signs the car idle and shook slightly then taking off was a bear because it lacked power. I did notice my mpg was reading bout 10-15mpg less then normally.
I going back to bed because I work graveyard and will look at it more when I get up. but the oil looked good and wasn't any engine burning smell. the only odor i think i could smell was almost like coolant. What could be causing this?
