Touareg :: Getting Strong Fumes Inside The Car
Dec 15, 2007
I'm finding that when I'm stopped I'm getting fairly strong fumes inside the car. Is this unusual? I'd like to have some info before I talk to my dealer.

View 5 RepliesI have a 98 honda crv. I live in Las Vegas and when the temp outside is over 100, like today, there are terrible strong fumes like strong dry cleaning fluid in the front right area of the car. This starts after the AC has been running for about 10-15 minutes. If you run the car longer than this, the fumes get worse inside the car, nauseating. I have had a mechanic tell me to replace the gas cap, but this did not work. This happens when the gas tank is empty or full or in between.
View 2 RepliesI've had my car for 6 months and have noticed that when I start my car with the vent on blowing air I can smell exhaust fumes. It doesn't seem to happen every time and if I start the car with the air off I don't smell anything. I can turn the air on after ten minutes of driving and the smell is there at first then seems to go away, either that or I get used to the smell. My closest dealership is 60 miles away
View 4 RepliesI have a 2005 Passat and recently I noticed an exhaust fumes smell inside the car; windows closed. This occurs when driving in no traffic... My circulation is on open or outside air...
View 3 RepliesFor weeks I've been smelling gasoline fumes inside the car, usually when the weather is cold and when the car has been sitting overnight; sometimes while it is idling. Have had to car to my mechanic, who I have confidence in and who has done a good job with repairs in the past. He could not locate the source of the fumes.
View 9 RepliesThis is my first car with leatherette, wondering if that is causing the smell? Its not the monster mats. I have had several new cars and this is different than the average new car smell. Looking to getting rid of it?
View 11 RepliesI'm getting a strong fuel smell inside my car typically after i fill the tank regardless of how much i fuel i put in. What could be causing this?
View 4 RepliesWhenever it's cold outside (I live in MN, so it gets really, really cold), my car fills up with a very strong gas odor. It only happens when I am at a stop as well. I have taken it in, and have been told that nothing is wrong. The smell is so strong that I have to roll down the windows and my friends are refusing to ride in my car! I am worried that it's dangerous.
It's a Pontiac Grand Am from 2005. 102,000 miles, roughly.
My father in-law gave us a 1996 explorer AWD with a 5.0 for my son who is 16. A couple of weeks later he's out learning with my wife and a very strong electrical smell took over the cabin. They came right home and when I got in I found all of the gauges not working. The instrument lights work, blinkers work, but all gauges do nothing. Pulled cluster and wires look O.K. behind it from what I can see. They saw no smoke, just smell, fuses look O.K.. What could cook on this vehicle that would wipe out just the gauges?
View 5 Replies2004 V6 155K : Today I've experienced a strong vibration that only happens going uphill and goes away as soon as I level out onto a flat surface. I had the drive shaft replaced under warranty several years back. The vibration is so strong I thought I had a flat tire.
View 3 RepliesOver the last 2 days here in NJ were its been cold. When starting the Treg and get out of the car I smell a strong odor of gas from the Exhaust. This normal? Haven't had this smell before. Seems like it drives normal. Don't get to drive it everyday anymore. Only on weekends as my wife take the Treg to work now.
View 7 RepliesI remember reading very recently about someone who found a fix to the strong fuel odor on cold starts. I can't seem to find it anywhere. I think it mentioned something about a bad ignition coil or something.
View 4 RepliesNot long ago my wife said the air recirc doesn't work any more on our '04 V8 and I had to admit that I agreed. After a little investigative driving, I noted that heavy acceleration (or uphill climb) causes V8 to tick (can hear it reflecting on passing walls, for instance) and strong smell of exhaust in cabin.
I thought it might be a manifold/exhaust system leak causing the noise and the exhaust smell. Seems to be only when driving aggressively or climbing. Soonest the local dealer can see it is 7/21 (16 days from now). You think it safe to drive?
2004 V8 - ~62k did the 60k service about 2 months ago. No other problems other than tpms not liking 50 degree swings in temperature. Haven't really had time to examine it, but wife left work this morning at -18F said she was getting a weird smell, no lights, a little smoke when she was stopped. I thought nothing of it.
Went to the garage to leave for work and it was like a dingy night club, fog/smoke everywhere and a strong smell of burning oil. Its supposed to warm up to 20 or so tomorrow, so I'm hoping whatever started leaking seals up.
I searched and didn't come up with what i think is the issue although i'll check out what was found in my search.
2006 Toureg V6 squeak issue:
**sounds like it is coming from the front
**noticiceable from inside the cabin only from approx. 15+ mph
**squeak does not get louder as speed increases
**when brakes are applied and vehicle comes to a stop squeak goes away
**when vehicle begins to move forward again, squeak returns
Brakes have been checked thoroughly and tires are good to go.
I've noticed that often in the morning, my Touareg has condensation forming on the inside of the front winshield. I don't drive the vehicle daily. I have looked for a moisture source inside of the vehicle but it is bone dry.
View 3 RepliesThe headlights on my 05 V8 (12K mi) are starting to "fog" up a bit on the inside -- and all within the last 200mi or so. The fog doesn't appear to be the result of condensation inside of the lens. Instead, it almost looks like the glass is now dirty and, I'd guess, about 10% opaque immediately in front of the main projectors on both sides. It shows no signs of going away under any conditions. FWIW, the weather has been steady temperature-wise and has been quite dry for the last few weeks.
View 6 RepliesI know this is a T-Reg ongoing issue but has there been any resolve for the inside passenger door release handle sticking? I have it too.
View 4 RepliesI recently had my local VW dealership replace the alternator on my 2004 V8 under warranty. Upon picking up the Touareg, there is a noticeable increase in exhaust rumble inside the vehicle as well as a vibration coming from the front passenger's seat and footwell. It isn't any louder outside but my wife and son both agree that it is much louder inside the Touareg.
I brought this up to the service representative and he had the shop foreman take a look. The technician said he didn't find any exhaust leaks and said they dropped the motor without removing any exhaust components. He claimed they just removed the clips on the pipes and dropped the motor and exhaust together. I was left to drive away with no solution.
Started up the Touareg last night to come home from work and immediately heard a new noise. It is loud and clearly audible from inside the vehicle. I was able to isolate it to something inside the front driver's side fender, something above the wheel well. Sounds like a cross between a blender and a leaf blower (a device that I could certainly use at this time of the year.) Note - the noise goes away when turn off the climate control system (by lowering the fan speed all the way.)
View 9 Repliesi have noticed that my front tires are wearing quicker on the inside. that is to say they don't seem to be wearing evenly. have almost no tread left on the insides of front tires and these tires only have about 13000 mi on them. is this and aligment problem? dealer says no.
