Jan 3, 2010
I had my touareg used for almost three years and never added any coolant. Today was first time I saw coolant warning on dash. I tuned off car and restarted and it was gone.

View 5 RepliesI was towing an enclosed trailer (4000lbs) this past weekend on the interstate and the low coolant warning came on. I pulled in at the next exit at a truck stop to look for distilled water and they did not have any. I decided to buy an off brand long life premixed coolant, pink in color and topped off the overflow tank with about 1/2 gallon of coolant. After reading about not mixing coolants with the G12 that comes in the Touareg, will I have to drain the entire cooling system and refill with G12? or is this not enough to worry about? Should I get the dealer to do this for free since they just serviced my truck prior to my trip and I told them I was going to be towing and to make sure everything is okay?
View 9 RepliesJust over 2000 miles on trex and i just got an "insufficient coolant" warning light this evening. the car had been idle for 2 days or so (i.e. cold start) and the warning light came on. I was running a short errand -- and when i re-started the car to come home, the warning did not come up. A couple of questions...
1) I checked the floor of my garage; I'm not leaking fluid. how could this have happened?
2) If the light didn't come on during the return trip, is everything ok?
3) Checking the manual, it says that i must use a specific type of coolant if I'm going to top it off myself --
I have a VW Touareg 2003. The coolant warning light on the dash keeps coming on and is using 5lts of coolant for every 3 tanks of fuel. Also the oil light has also started coming on. I have had a look around the engine and underneath on the road and have found no signs of leaking. Where the coolant and oil are disappearing to.
View 6 RepliesWhile the dealer was diagnosing my low-oil-pressure warning light issue, they found out that there is a minor leakage around the thermostat housing (So minor that no trace of coolant had found its way to my garage floor). They recommended to have the housing and thermostat replaced. They said that the engine needs to be dropped in order for them to get to the thermostat which is facing the firewall. Now, that's bad packaging.
View 1 RepliesThis morning I went to my car started it for 10 seconds the light on my dash said stop and to check coolant, I got a ride to get some coolant filled it up, drove to work than drove home after work and the coolant level is at the same place I filled it up as this morning. What happend that it was gone last night than fine today? 03 vw gti vr6 24v ....
View 6 RepliesAbout 2 months ago my Touareg was rear-ended. I just got it back from the body shop and am finding little things that are not the same and I am wondering if they just need reprogramming or if these could be a bigger issue (going back to the body shop today)?
1. They replaced the entire liftgate, but the rear wiper is not working even though the washer fluid does.
2. The interior lights are on, even though all doors are shut, when the switch is set to the open door setting.
3. There is no beep when I lock my vehicle with the keyfob, but the lights blink.
4. There are no warning beeps for the parking sensors, even though the dash lights up.
This light comes on and have checked fluid levels and all is OK. Where can I disconnect this sucker?
View 1 RepliesCoolant overheat warning. Luckily, was moments from home so pulled in and stopped for about 6 hours. Checked coolant on level surface...looks ok. Started it up and drove around neighborhood. Car steadily climbs to 200 degrees F and then will sit there for around 5 minutes. As oil temperature breaks the halfway point, the coolant temp begins to steadily rise again until it hits just below to overheat mark for a couple minutes, then finally pushes through into the red.
Parked car overnight.
Drove to VW repair shop. Exact same results driving there. Temp increases from ignition to 200 degrees over a couple minutes then stops for 5+ minutes. Oil gets hot, coolant gets hot, I get very hot.Only 10 Months ago, I replaced the timing belt, water pump, and thermostat with genuine parts. I know what a pain in the arse it is to change these items so I did them all at once. I am sick thinking about having to do it yet again with these apes poking around my car.
few weeks ago i had a coolant light go off and said stop stop flashed and then check manual lights. Keep in mind i do live in socal, were weather is not bad and the time i started this was not colder then normal times, i then parked went on with my day came back and it was fine no warning. This morning i had another light and warning come up (warmer then before) i dont know if it really is low or problem with the ecu? i checked the coolant an it is fine?
View 7 RepliesI'm the guy with the XC90 in Gabon. Someone brought me some power steering fluid, brake fluid, oil,......but I forgot to ask for radiator fluid....crap!
Today I got the red triangle and low coolant warning...topping it off with water made it go away, but I need some fluid. I can't get Pentosin radiator fluid here. Is there another kind of radiator fluid I can put in the car that will mix with the existing stuff? If I just get ethylene glycol base will that work?
Or....If I drain it all,out and start over from scratch...does it matter what kind of fluid I put in?
At the end of last winter, I got the warning flash that my coolant level was low. So I topped up (about a pint or more)About 3 weeks later I had to go through the same scenario !! but then it started to get hot outside and my air conditioner mode took over and lo and behold - no more coolant loss.!!?? Now that winter and cold weather is back - so is my leak!!
So I run off to the local dealer and they get the car up. And drop the belly pan with the engine running and the heat cranked up. the mechanic said he found a dripping hose coming from UNDER the intake manifold.
The engine is a 2002 2.8 v6....
On a few occasion, usually during cool weather, the engine temperature rises up to 130 C, the coolant overheating warning comes on for a few about a minute or two and then the temperature goes back to normal (90 C.)
The car has 106,000 km. I purchased it last summer from an independent use car dealer. I inquired about the car calling the previous owner. He did mentioned that the only problem he ever experience was that the car overheated on a few occasion during the winter months (cooler weather).
Could it be that the thermostat needs to be replaced?
Just as the title says, I have had the PIAA bulbs in my DRL for about a month. Today I swapped out the 27W PIAA 7440 with the 21W stock bulbs and am getting bulb out warning on the dash. The stock bulbs appear fine and were working when I swapped them. I put the PIAA back and it works again. It seems like the car has "adapted" to the higher wattage of the PIAA and now thinks that the stock bulbs are too low wattage to be a functional bulb?
View 3 RepliesIt's been pretty cold the last few days and tonight when I was coming home the car told me to stop and check the coolant.. and servicve manual....what does this mean...I have read to check the coolant level (pink G12 stuff)...the resevoir is full....could something be frozen??
View 7 RepliesI have a 2004 W8 Passat wagon. I just went over 60,000 miles and was wondering how to reset the service warning for coolant servicing.
View 1 RepliesAbout a month ago I noticed the coolant level looked a little low. I attributed it to the fact that the engine was warm after driving. Tonight the coolant light illuminated and the mfd states the level is low. Sure enough it's quite low.Is this normal for the R? I know my MK5 GTI burned oil like crazy. Should I be concerned?
View 2 RepliesWhen I start up the car in the morning, the infamous "STOP!! CHECK COOLANT LEVEL" warning will come on, and then shortly thereafter it will go away. I topped off the coolant level (with the pink stuff of course) and yet this light will come on occasionally. It mostly comes on first thing in the morning when the car is started up and cold, and *sometimes* come on when the car is warm. Fluid level is all topped off. What gives?
I was reading that there is a fluid level sensor that sometimes goes bad? could this be it? I changed the coolant temp sensor back in the summer of this year. (not sure if that has anything to do with it?) Not sure if I have a leak, cause I look under the car in the morning and I have no spots of coolant anywhere.
Had my low coolant warning light and message come on while driving home from work. My car is 1 year old with 30k on it, motor is hot right now and coolant is a good bit below the minimum line (will post a pic soon). I do my service intervals at 7500 miles at most and regularly keep an eye on my oil and coolant levels.
I just checked the coolant last week after an oil change and noticed it was at the bottom minimum line, it's fairly below that now. Does this call for a ride to the dealership? I've seen where people have had pumps/hoses replaced already due to leaks. Nothing on the ground from what I can tell and nothing seems to be leaking under the hood.
My coolant level keeps dropping really low underhood and the light comes on on the dash, but I went and bought coolant, opened the hood, and the level was back to normal. Where is it all going? Should I add any when it's low if it's coming back? This just seems weird.
View 11 RepliesI am working on my daughters 1999 Grand Am with the 3.4 L V6. I was told by a shop that the heads gasket(s) were blown and needed to be replaced.
Well, the front head, cylinders 2,4,6 showed a "clean" cylinder2 while 4 & 6 looked ok. The rear head had no visible signs of leaking to a cylinder. After cleaning and reassembly, everything appears to be in order except for;
When starting from cold, the engine runs for about 15-30 sec. and the radiator fans come on. I thought that this was strange since this didn't happen before and I was told by someone that the fans don't come on until the coolant temp reaches 230 degrees.
After running the vehicle for about 20 minutes the heat to the interior is very good. In fact its downright HOT. However, the temp gauge on the dash reads "100". Thinking I broke the sensor while I was working on it, I replaced the sensor. No change.
The "Low Coolant" light on the dash is on, yet the level in the surge tank is above the full cold mark. I've replaced this sensor twice. No change.
