I complained about this 8 months ago and they replaced the compass display module. Then my battery died about 6 months ago and they replaced the compass control module. Now it's flickering--worse than the first time where the backlight was turning on and off. It's just the backlight that appears to be flickering.
View 11 RepliesI had my TReg in for the 5000 mile service this week. Among the laundry list of items on my punchlist for them I mentioned the compass and the fact it was going on and off and the blue light was sometimes changing from dim to brighter when the headlights are on.
The dealer indicated that VWoA has acknowledged some problems with the compass display and I'm getting a new one.
This located near the sunroof controls. It is very hard to read during the day.
View 9 RepliesWhile driving I noticed that the compass is not working or its gone into some mode or something. It shows PM 0:15. Pressing any of the 3 buttons doesn't do anything except holding down the 2 small buttons at the same time brings the name/version of the compass software and releasing seems to reboot or refresh the display. But after that it comes back to PM 0:15. I should also say that after parking and locking the car the display keeps flashing the PM 0:15. 15 minutes later I checked same thing it is still flashing. Whats happening to my compass?

The backlight on the heat unit (the three dial switches right below the radio) has been going on and off. There is no pattern to the outages. I figure the wire harness connection has a problem. A few questions: How to I take that unit out? It is like the radio that I can pull out? I figure that with the radio out I may have access to the wire harness, but I have never pulled the passat radio. If I can get in there, what color wire on the harness runs the backlight?
I cannot find compass on my display? IS this normal for S model? I saw some people use a gps sensor on back door to lure signal into the audio consol. Don't remember exactly. Can I replace mine with a luxury VW Navigation GPS OEM RNS-315 Touch Screen Radio? Try this? Or the compass idea into current basic radio module?

View 1 RepliesI've got a '99 GMC Sonoma that I purchased last summer. Great little rig, runs well and the previous owner took care of it. In the last couple of days the headlights and dashboard display have been flickering at all RPMs. I am guessing a bad battery or alternator, but previous related posts indicate it could be all sorts of stuff electrical.
From what I can tell from previous posts, the easier tests are
1) Voltage across the battery poles with engine off to test for a bad cell,
2) AC voltage at battery with engine running to test for alternator diode problems (should be no AC voltage, correct?), or
3) Something called the A.I.R. pump, which I've never heard of and wouldn't know how to test.
The last time I had this happen was on a 2000 Caravan, and it was the battery.
not always, but the odd time I see out of the corner of my eye the compass flicker off and on. maybe 1-2 times a day... sometimes less than that. is this a common occurance?

View 2 RepliesI am preparing to replace the compass/clock combo in the overhead display with a detachable ham radio head. I am now worried that the navigation unit might use some information provided by the compass. If removing the compass will disable any features on the navigation unit?
I don't know if the module in the overhead display contains the actual compass or if the compass provides any information to the navigation unit to supplement GPS information.
I had a leaky sunroof issue over the weekend. I was driving in rainy weather on I-80 in Sacramento and water started pouring (very steady drip) out of corner of the compass module on Saturday. A few minutes later it started dripping out of another plastic seam towards the rear view mirror.
The head liner also started getting saturated near the compass. I took it to the dealer Monday to fix some other issues, and they said they could not replicate the leak problem, but that they did blow out the drain plugs. I guess my question would be, even if the drains were blocked, how would water get down the head liner and into the compass area?
I look and it appears that the only holes in the sunroof tray are on the sides, which I assume are the drain holes. Did my dealer really do anything by blowing out the drain holes? Additionally, I have only had my Treg for 2 months and have not used the sunroof much due to the weather this year.
Last night I noticed that my overhead clock and compass were dark (turned out it was dead). I tried to access address 6E on my Vag, but it can't be found. This appears to be the ONLY thing not working. BTW, my onstar still works.
View 8 RepliesI have been having the drip problem from the area around the compass every time it rains hard and i accelerate. I told the dealer and they stated that the problem was the drainage tubes were clogged and charged me to clean them out. Since then i have had to have the drainage tubes cleaned 3 times and it solves my problem for a short period of time but then i have to do it again.. I have had several cars with sunroof as well as a cheapo explorer and not once did i ever even have to have the tubes cleaned.

I always have to press the button, but it only stays on for a few minutes. I want to keep it on permanently when I turn on the lights.
View 10 RepliesThis started with the blinking compass (didn't think much of it)... then i got the "Running Gear Workshop" fault (brought it in 3 days ago and they said they fixed it)... but today the "workshop" fault returned, the voltmeter went dead and blinker indicators in the dash went dead (even though the blinkers are functional).
Boston VW just told my wife the "battery is fine" and then admitted they have "really have no idea what's wrong with it. 2004's are a mystery because they were released before the 'bugs' were worked out"... but they would be happy to get us a rental car (and have us pay for it) and they will try and figure it out.... (probably turn it on and off a bunch of times till the problems go away).
How do you keep the compass/clock from turning off when driving at night? You know the near the sunroof.
View 2 RepliesYep that's right a leak around the compass area. It first happened a month ago while driving in the rain. A few drops came out of the area between the headliner and the compass on the passenger side. The other day a couple of drops came out of the other side (driver). I took it to the dealer the next day and they couldn't find any water. Even after removing the whole top console and running it through the car wash. They couldn't even see where any water may have been.
Happens at speeds over 45mph. Raining outside for at least 2 hours. Sunroof had not been used for at long time due to Winter only a few drops have come out so far at one time. Has only happened twice in the 4 months we have owned the car.
Last night I happen to look up at my compass and next to the time I saw two symbols that I had not seen before. One was a fan and the other looked like two overlapping rectangles like on the steering wheel controls and on the compass controls. I pushed the top button and they disappeared. I haven't been able to reproduce them.
