Clicking sound behind the dashboard? it happens every once in a while and it's a little disconcerting. I can't tell if it's electrical or just loose parts clicking around.

View 8 RepliesBeen driving the treg for a month now and liking it , getting ready for its first (for us) trip to Tahoe on Thursday. This evening while coming home there was a slight clicking/rustling sound from behind the dash then a message comes on the screen "put drive lever into the position P" or something very similar. I stopped the car, re-started it, tried it in all drives, and the message kept coming on for a few seconds then disappearing. What this means?
View 5 RepliesI did a search and see that this random clicking sound has been discussed but a source never identified. Thought I'd ask again 'cause mine is doing it more often and it's driving me nuts now that I hear it. Mostly at highway speeds, not tied to any particular function or steering wheel turning. It's like a solenoid flipping on and off. I know I could never get the dealer to replicate it and I assume if many Tregs have it, it's just a normal function but thought I'd ask.
View 15 RepliesOur V6 just turned 40k and it's developed some interesting sounds. First of all, from time to time at highway speed a whirring/whinning sound has developed. I was driving down the road the other night, no rain, about 60 degrees temp outside, and between 50 and 80 mph this noise seemed constant. I turned off the radio, turned off the climate control and the problem still existed.
It *sounds* like a drive train noise (my old jeep would make a sound when it was in a low gear that is similar). Second, also intermittent, a clicking relay from inside the dash on the drivers side. The frequency and rate are inconsistent and I can't correlate it to anything happening while driving.. just highway driving.
All's going well for 10 miles and then I suddenly notice, the in-dash flasher indicator, is not working or clicking as I change lanes. The outside mirrors are fine - showing turn flashes. So, I pull off into a gas station and shut down the whole electric system, and pull the key out.
I reboot and start up, but still no change. I try to put the emergency button off/on...it works fine. I move the flasher stick back and forth. But still no turn flasher indicator, on the inside dash. So, I guess it's a blown fuse and I will attend to it Sunday in daylight. We go to the restaurant, have dinner and get back into this scrambled egg. I stick the key in and ACHTUNG IT WORKS!
2005 V8, 25k miles. This morning I started the car and heard a clicking noise in the dash right behind the keyhole. It was intermittent and sounded like a cricket as I was driving. It was not too loud, a few db less than a turn signal click. Every few seconds, the MFI message said "Place lever in P position" ... Nothing else doing anything abnormal. Car otherwise sounds and drives fine. The 4WD knob was in high for normal driving.
View 4 RepliesRecently purchased a used 2006 Chevy cobalt, seems like an alright car so far. But lately when I turn on the car and also sometimes when I switch the heat on there is a clicking sound behind the dash on the passengers side that lasts less then 10 seconds. Is it safe to drive on? Or am I causing some great internal damage by just living with the noise instead of repairing it asap (bc tight on cash rn)?
View 3 RepliesThe noise I am talking about comes from near the steering wheel and sounds like a relay or switch turning itself on and off rapidly. I can not pinpoint why the clicking starts, but I believe I have figured out what the sounds is from.
Over the weekend while heading up snowboarding I turned on the rear defroster, and there the sound was. I then turned the rear defroster on and off rapidly and it replicated the clicking sound I hear periodically.
I will be contacting the dealer to see if they can resolve this annoying sound, now that I have found the source.
The sound comes from under the dash. recently the blinkers stopped working all together so I tracked down the problem to the hazard light switch and replaced that and the blinkers are working now. However, the clicking sound remains and seems to happen more just after using the turn signal but the sound happens randomly as well.
I'm thinking it might be the turn signal assembly located on the steering column. So, I was thinking of replacing the unit (it has both signal lever and wiper/wash lever) .
My 2010 prius is making a strange sound, and has been since day one.
It makes a "Clicking" sound sometimes that can be heard inside the cabin and sounds like it is coming from the center dash. It is definitely NOT a squeaky dash or door panel or anything like that. It is definitely electrical in nature. It almost sounds like a very fast clicking relay or maybe another electrical component. It is fairly high pitched (not like the inverter whine, though) and definitely clicking (maybe buzzing), not constant. It sort of sounds like a cricket. I am working on adding some audio/video to this post, should have some up today.
Here are some things I have noticed about the noise:
1. Only happens when gas pedal is depressed, not when braking or coasting.
2. When the display is in "Eco" it happens loudest and consistently when the bar is 3/4 of the way full, but it can happen (although the clicking is slower and less consistent) at 1/2 or just before the power section of the bar.
3. The car must be "warmed up" i.e. doesn't happen right away, car must be driven for 10-15 min if engine is cool.
4. Seems to be happening more/more quickly after starting the car in the hotter weather (I purchased my car in Feb.)
I am the original owner of a 2008 Prius, and am familiar with the various noises that the car likes to make. However, a new clicking noise has started recently, and need to identify the source/cause, so I can (hopefully) repair it myself, or have it repaired cost effectively.
I have attached a pic of what I think is the source of the noise.
This pic is looking upwards under the dash, above the brake pedal. In the center of the pic is a white thingamajig. This thing is attached to a motor on the right side (to the right of what I think is a yellow bearing or washer), and the other end is attached to a darker gray arm. When the climate control makes an adjustment, the motor turns, the white plastic piece turns, and the arm moves. What appears to happen is that sometimes, the motor continues to operate when it shouldn't, and these plastic pieces all kind of move around, clicking.
I have a '84 Bronco and before I redid all the ignition wiring when I turned off the key the engine would stay running for about 6 seconds and then turn off. Now when I turn off the key and turn off a switch about 6-8 seconds later I here a click sound that comes from under and about center of the dash. And sometimes it clicks on and off in rapid secession kind of like when you flip a light switch on and off quickly. Some days it does it and some days it don't.
If I leave the battery hooked up then it drains the battery overnight or within a day, and sometimes its just fine. So to be safe I unhook the battery whenever its not being driven or started periodically. I am wondering what is in the center of the dash that needs power and that controls the ignition stuff?
Outside store Touareg will not start, dead no power just a clicking sound and no lights on the dashboard. Jump start and work ok, as soon as I stop no power. Do I need new battery? The battery indicators starts low when jump start but stays at 13 after running.
View 3 Replies1996 lincoln towncar wont start intermittently. Started doing this yesterday, was troubleshooting and my friend jumped the starter to check it and he said it was good. I messed with a few fuses wires and it started up fine. Drove today with no problem, parked and it won't start again... same as yesterday... turn key and all u get is a clicking sound from the inside sounds like under the glovebox in the dash...
View 12 RepliesWhen I turn off my car I always get out within 10-20 seconds until today. When I shut it off after a errand I was checking messages on my phone and after about 45 seconds I started hearing this repetitive clicking noise from the left side of the dash near the vent area by the door. It clicked about 5 times and stopped for about 20 seconds, then clicked 5 more times, stopped for 20 seconds and again, 5 clicks, then it stopped and didn't start again. I am not sure if it is just the computer making adjustments, etc, but it is a little unsettling on a new car with 320 miles.
I thought maybe a bomb was in there. It was about 90 degrees outside and I had been using the A/C. I plan on listening again tomorrow evening when I get home from work and see if it does it again. (My car is a '15 SE 2.4L if that makes a difference). Maybe I am just paranoid, but you buy a new car to get rid of worries, not still have to worry if your car is breaking down, but I know new cars have a lot of features/settings/computers, etc and certain sounds may be normal.
I have a 2004 Ford Focus that has always run like a champ; (71,000) miles. Two years ago it started having some really strange "issues." The car's dash light for the ABS would start to flash off and on, accompanied by a clicking sound whenever it flashed. The brakes are always fine. Next, though, the car starts kicking and "bucking" as though it wanted to die. Whenever I pulled off the road, turned off the car and turned it back on, everything was fine. This went on for weeks but it was sporadic in nature; and naturally it didn't do anything for my mechanic even when I left it there.
I finally took it to the Ford dealer who charged me $800 for a new alternator belt, but it came with no guarantee - they said they frankly didn't know whether it would work or not. Turns out it did, for a couple of years; but it has just now started doing it again. I can find nothing that I'm doing or not doing determines whether this happens or not. Now I've got the same scarey problem all over again, and every couple of years for a new alternator belt, I might as well give it up and sell. I'm getting so tired of hearing "I don't know what's wrong". Oh, by the way, the "check engine" light never goes on.
I have a 08 F150 king ranch and have a couple of issues. There is a strange sound coming from the dash behind the gauges it sounds like a computer hard drive clicking and the heater seems to be stuck on will not even blow outside fresh air.
View 1 RepliesI have an '04 V10 and most mornings, particularly when it's cold, I hear a clicking sound coming from what sounds like behind the radio. It sounds like a relay clicking on and off or a muted turn signal. It lasts for about 15 minutes. It has no relationship to RPM and cycles about once a second, maybe slightly faster.
I am bringing it in for its 10,000 mile service. I have had no driveability issues and no check engine lights, although I have not hooked up a Vag to check for codes.
OK, I just got the airbag fult and am scheduled for service. I just noticed a clicking sound coming from the steering wheel Area... it does not occur with any specific movement and is fairly quite... definitely sounds like some kind of electrical switch tht is continually trying to do something (sensor??).
I am wondering if this is related to the airbag fault? Very annoying once you pick up on it... along with whatever is loose in my driver side pillar next to the seat belt strap that rattles with the bass!!
When I turn on the rear wiper there is a clicking sound that comes from the front dash. (click...click... ever time the wiper goes up/down)
I could have sworn I have never heard this noise before (and it is noticeable), but the dealer says it is the relay and it is normal.
I only bring this up because in the Ford I have as a rental while the Elantra is fix makes no noise when you use the rear wiper.
2004 Jetta Turbo Auto ...
"I inadvertently had my foot on the brake and lights on for awhile when the car was not started. Ignition on. then when i went to start it, it made a clicking sound inside the car (not at the engine) and the lights on the dash flickered. during that time i was initially still able to turn on radio, turn on headlights, use power locks, etc so i don't think it was the battery (tried jumping it and it did not jump start). maybe it's the starter?
Starter had given no problem previously. Or is there an interlock or module that could be keeping it from cranking?
