I know that brake light usage varies by driver. However, this driver has never had to replace a brake light on any car I've owned within the first three years. I know this because several have been leased and I never had to replace any bulb.
My Treg brake light went out last week and I had to replace it. Is a shorter brake light life par for the course here? Any fancy reason? How many brake lights have you replaced?
I've recently noticed that the right brake light on my 2003 corolla is not working. When I turn on the light, all the bulbs in the rear right seems to light up (except turn signal of course). when I pressed on the brake, the right brake bulb doesn't get brighter like the left one. Two questions:
1. Am I crazy when I see the brake light bulb turn on with other bulbs (i.e. is it suppose to be on when light is turn on and just get brighter when brake is pressed)?
2. Is this a burnt out bulb that I can easily replace myself or potentially a wiring problem that I may need a mechanic for?
My dad has a 2010 Matrix base model, and we can't seem to get the driver's side burnt out bulb out. I did a Google/Bing search, as well as Youtube, but most results were about the Corolla, and the Matrix and Corolla have 2 different tail lights.

View 8 RepliesI have a 2004 Treg with 28k miles. This car has the air suspension and the dashboard with the LCD display.
When the foot pedal break is released, the break light remains on and the center display sounds off the alarm that the foot break is on as the car begins to roll.
After half dozen additional pulls of the break release handle, the issue goes away. This is now happening almost every time the foot break is used.
My timing belt literally burnt off today and jammed my engine up.

(Headlight area) I open the hood and I can't pin point it....smells vaguely on burnt rubber. I am new to a TDI so maybe I'm just being an idiot, but what is it? I drive spirited on the way home, but dont floor it. I do have one hill thats pretty steep I usually charge up...(fun to burn the rice rockets who struggle!) I thought maybe parking brake? View 2 RepliesSo, my buddy has an '04 Touareg. He went to the local dealer (who are well known for ripping people off) since he had the brake sensor light on. They told him he would have to replace his brake pads AND the rotors as well, for the 4 wheels, coming up to almost $2K. His car only has 36k miles, and I told him I thought they weren't being honest. Why would rotors go bad so early? He drives like a little girl, with no strong braking at all, in dry conditions... He hasn't seen any signs of vibration or lethargy regarding braking, the only indicator being the sensor light. I am trying to convince him on getting a second opinion before he gets mugged by the dealer.
View 18 RepliesQuick question for the techies of the group: my right brake light goes out intermittently. I get the warning in the MFI whenever it goes out. Lasts for about 10 mins and then works fine again for about 2 weeks, then another failure for 10 mins, then good for 2 weeks, etc. The dealer says the bulb is good and he can't find any other problem. Someone suggested there may be a short or it could be the wiring. But can I do if its never "out" when I bring it to the dealer and he says "what am I supposed to fix?"

Once I stopped at the store I smelled burning brake odor on the passenger side right front wheel. Is there anything that should burn off of a new part of shall be concerned about this? View 9 RepliesThe check brake light came on this morning on my way to work. I only have 17K on the Touareg. I did search on brake problems on vortex, Its still to early to change the brakes.
Can get them replaced under warranty or I have to pay for them out of my pocket. This sucks the Touareg is about a year old and I have to replace my brakes so soon. I have 22's on but I dont think that has anything to do with have to change the brake pads/rotors early.
The rear (right) brake light failed per the heads-up display and is confirmed not working on my FSI v8; nothing lights-up when I depress the brake pedal, but all lights are lit when the lights are on. The dealer is a 3hrs drive; thus I was wondering if this could be a common fuse issue that could be fixed sans going to the dealer?

View 5 RepliesMy mother-in-law moved my car and put the emergency brake on (2010 Santa Fe) when she got out. When I got into drive home, I drove about 10miles with it engaged (for some reason the light didn't indicate it was on). When I got home I noticed a burnt rubber smell from the left rear tire. (no smoke though)
Our driveaway is an incline. After engaging/disengaging the e-brake, the light started coming back on again. If I put the car in neutral and release the regular brakes, it will quickly roll back. If I put the e-brake on in netural and disengage the regular brake, it still holds fine on the hill.
I know the damage can vary, but any test or check I can do to determine the amount of damage?
Got a check brake light warning in the display today, I assume one on the brake lights are out and need to be changed. Is this a simple plug and play change, and are the brake lights in the tailgate or rear quarters.
View 1 RepliesI just installed a Tekonsha Envoy trailer brake. I bought the VW wiring pieces and connected it to the factory under-dash plug. The problem is that when this is connected and the trailer is hooked up the green light should illuminate on the Envoy controller. When I have the trailer hooked up, there are no lights lit and the trailer brake unit just seems dead. This is a brand new Envoy.
View 2 RepliesMy yellow (circle with line on each side) warning light for brakes is on in my 2005 VW Touareg. Only 9 months ago I replaced the front pads, rotors and sensors. When I put the car in drive and start to move the warning light flashes 'check front brake pads'. Is it possible it's something simple like a sensor? Is there a way for me to check that? Side note: I replaced the rear brake pads and rotors only 5,000 miles before that. I just want to see if it could be something simple before I take it in to be checked out and told it's something more sinister. I checked the level of brake fluid and it is full.

View 4 RepliesNoticed a burnt rubber smell while driving today. Stopped at a gas station and before I could get around to the other side of the truck, a guy stopped and told me there was smoke coming from the passenger rear wheel well. The truck seemed to run and drive fine. Didn't seem to be any noticeable drag, but once I got home I felt that wheel and it was a bit warmer than the others.
My parking brake pedal is all the way out and pulling on the release doesn't seem to relieve any pressure or "Pop" like it normally would if releasing the brake. We've got a good downpour of freezing rain right now and I'm not able to start pulling things apart. Anything easy I can try for now? Pretty sure it's seized by the way it's acting but I really don't use the parking brake. Auto trans and I live in a really flat area.
