Touareg :: 2005 V8 Transmission Not Shifting
Feb 24, 2009
It wasn't until very recently that my 2005 Touareg (V8) just dumped a plethora of problems on me all at once. System Fault Workshop, Brake Assist Failure, etc... However, one of the more serious and annoying issues is the automatic transmission.
One day, the action of pushing the shifter over into the Tipronic slot was stiff and unyielding. A little pushing here and there and it popped in there. No big deal. A few days later, once in Tiptronic mode, it refused to downshift, it would only upshift. A few days later, it refused to shift at all once pushed over into Tiptronic mode. Upon removing it back into Drive mode, it also refused to shift there.
Now, to my surprise, my Touareg will not shift gears up or down unless it is in Sport mode, which is not too great for the long-distance commuting I have been doing lately, I would like my 5th gear back. I have been unsuccessful in searching any situations similar to this and I am worried about what kind of parts could have been damaged under the shifter... but I am skeptical about what electronics could be broken that tell not only Tiptronic but also Drive mode not to shift whatsoever, and that it may be more deep-seeded than some flimsy plastic under the console.

2005 Escape CD4E gone...157,000 miles. Previous owner said it was slipping when shifting to 3rd. During test drive the vehicle would hardly move. Only code was for the output shaft. There were metal shavings on the sensor magnet as well as the magnetic drain plug. The drivetrain is now out of the vehicle.
Questions:
1. After a bit of research it seems like there are a lot of tweaks that should be done during a rebuild to make this tranny live longer. Is there any point to having a local trans shop try to rebuild it?
2. Given the reputation of this trans I assume it makes no sense to look at used ones, correct?
3. Any other options?

I have a 2005 2.5 vw jetta.
It has 150,000 miles....the cars been working just fine untill DEC of last year. I had the dealer check the transmission fluid and they said it was low....so they flushed and refilled the transmission oil...they didnt see any metal but that didnt fix the problem.....
Now i have the car not shifting correctly ....theres a delay when shifting in all gears but it is intermittent, sometimes it shifts hard and sometimes you can just baby the throttle and it wont shift as hard.....once on the freeway the car runs fine......but when coming to a stop you can feel the downshifting.....
I figured it has something to do with the valve body....my concern is the dealerships have quoted me 2000$ to replace the valve-body....the cars paid for and was wondering if i should just move onto a different jetta or fix this one?
If i fix the valve body will this jetta have the same issue later? Also i do have the vacuum pump leaking engine oil....not much can this be fixed while doing the valve body job???

I have a 2005 2.7L Santa Fe that was shifting poorly and getting stuck in limp mode intermittently. I read up on it and found that it was probably an issue with the input/output speed sensors. The codes confirmed my suspicions and I replaced both the input and output sensors. The codes cleared and the tranny shifted like a dream. Unfortunately after 2 days and 100+ miles the car suddenly started down shifting randomly on my way home from work. The CEL came back on and the car went into limp mode. Could the sensor have gone bad again? Or could it be the wiring harness that plugs into one of the sensors? I don't understand why the car would be fine for a few days and then all of a sudden be acting the same way.

I posted awhile back about a loss of power and hard shifting in the transmission. I thought I had it fixed, well I kind of did...... Replaced the IWE that had locked in solid. I replaced both, added some transmission fluid, new front brakes, and a new belt back in July/August. Truck was fine for a few thousand......
Well it's back. Now I have a noticeable whine in the cab. I haven't pin pointed it yet. It is only audible when the truck is running from 35-50 mph. It is not RPM dependent, it doesn't change when I take it in or out of four wheel drive. It isn't there when the truck isn't moving.
The truck has 61,000 on it. I bought it with 35,000 on it because I wanted a vehicle that wouldn't nickel and dime me. Something I could climb in and not worry about making home.
Well here I am less than 30,000 miles later and I have had issues with the fuel controller under the bed, brake calipers sticking, IWE's, new shocks, broken front coil spring, recall for the airbag, tie rods, ball joints, power window regulator, and now what appears to be a transmission.
I come from a long line of "FORD" guys, but I am seriously considering something else. This 04-08 model has to be one of the worst pickups ever built by ford.
Are the newer ones any better? Other than routine maintenance a vehicle shouldn't have to be touched before 61,000.

I have a 2000 F150 5.4L with 157k miles on it. I think it has the 4r70w trans. The transmission has started holding 2nd gear too long before shifting into third. Throttle position doesn't matter, it does it even under light throttle. I do not have a check engine light. I have owned the truck since new and the trans fluid has been changed 3 or 4 times. The fluid looks pretty good now, not burnt or anything. The truck has been sitting in the garage a lot over the past 2 years, I drive it at least once a month and have put maybe 2000 miles on it this year. It shifts fine through the other gears, just 2-3 has an issue. Truck has the towing package.

Well recently i bought a 79 f150 4x4 with a C6. I have been going over the regular stuff like vacuum lines, fuel lines, etc. I replaced all vacuum lines because most were cracked or stiff or just falling apart. The problem I am having is that the tranny doesn't want to shift to 3rd. I replaced the vacuum modulator hoping it would work, but no go.
The old modulator had the adjustment screw pretty much turned all the way out, so I am guessing that was done to cover up another issue. The truck shifts smooth as butta from 1-2, but over revs and never shifts when going to 3rd. This happens manually and when it is in D. Could it be an intermediate band? I am new to the auto tranny world so I am trying to soak up as much info as i can.

I don't have seamless shifting. I have a 2004 V8 and right now I'm driving a 2005 V6 loaner and it's soooo much smoother and is more of a joy to drive than my V8. It rides better and everything!

When shifting to LOW range is it ok to do this with the engine off. Like turn on the car but not with the engine on, as if to listen and make sure it sounds ok.

Today (not 2 days after taking delivery) I was travelling on the highway. stopped for fuel and as I am decelerating on the offramp when the truck shifted from 5th to 4th it went CLUNK, It did this twice, in the same circumstance. I can't make it replicate the noise every time. But 2 times in 24 hours is enough.

I have a 04 V8 with a hesitation in the shifting. The VIN is in the 44000's. The dealer says there is nothing they can do to flash the tranny, they've tried and it won't let them. I found the TSB referring to the engine code and they insist it doesn't apply to my vehicle. Is there anyway to find out for myself whether or not it is possible?

I am hearing a noise first thing in the morning when I leave my house and the car is shifting from 2nd to 3rd. The sound, I think, is coming from the front center of car, say directly below the radio area. The noise lasts only 1 to 2 seconds and sounds like when some tries to put a transmission in reverse while still rolling forward. A metal against metal sound of two pieces trying to mate up. I'm thinking transmission...I'm hoping center diff. There was mention of a scraching sound coming from front passenger side on initial startup. Idea was this could be Immobilizer or ABS.

I am new to the all wheel drive breed. When I turn the all wheel drive knob one click over to the right (4x4 low I believe) how much rougher should the shifting be. I notice it starts in 2nd gear, but 2-3 shift jolts the car to the point it almost snaps your neck(not WOT just normal accelaration). Each subsequent shift is a little smoother, but still very noticably rough. Is this normal? Even in the regular high mode, sometimes my regular around town low throttle shifts are pretty jolting.

My 2004 V8 clunks when shifting gears, causing the engine to oscillate right through the seat. It also happens when driving a steady speed, e.g., 10MPH in traffic, and you goose the gas or release the gas altogether. So far:
1. Replaced transmission valve body
2. Replaced stepper motor
3. Replaced rear propellor shaft and bearing
I think this started with a reflash of the trans to cure the death lag.

Whenever I am in sport mode i shift into first prior to stopping, but when in normal drive mode the car comes to a complete stop before shifting into first is this normal???

Seems like the problems just keep building up. Today leaving work T-reg shifts fine untill it got to 5th gear. It was around 35 mph. Went to give it more gas and it never shifted out of 5th to a lower gear. It did accelerate but even with pedal to the floor it never downshifted. Whats going on. It has done it twice in the past two days. After only having it on the road for less than 5 min each time.

Occasional clunk when truck is shifting gears. Not consistent. On highway at high acceleration clunk is more apparent. Any thoughts. 2004 v10 with new engine placed at 70,000km now at 85000km. Otherwise truck is running great.

Is it recommended to completely stop the Touareg before shifing from the Sport mode to the Normal driving mode?

Lately I have been driving in the Sport Mode more often. I have noticed that when accelerating from a stop it revs to just below the redline before shifitng, is this normal?
I also notice that when slowing down or coming to a stop, it has a "hurky jurky" feel. As if it was downshifiting way to early. is this normal?

bought the truck about 3 weeks ago and still having problems with the transmission. Replaced the VSS and it didn't work. My problems are it shifting hard from 1st to 2nd, it feels like it falls out of gear ( i can floor it and the speedometer creeps up then shifts hard.) Now i read having the 3rd brake light out is a problem with the trans too, my 3rd brake light is out along with the interior dome light ( doesn't go on when doors open) i plan to replace the TRS on the tranny tmw is there anything else i can do? how do i solve the brake light problem?
