Touareg :: 2005 - Squeal In Rear Driveshaft
May 27, 2011
I have a 05 T with 85,000miles. Recently, it has developed a piercing squeal which varies according to rpm level. VW dealer thinks it is a bearing in driveshaft.

View 3 RepliesGuys, my 2005 V8 is giving me the annoying sign (making a squeal noise while driving that actually goes away when I apply the brakes) that my pads are wearing out. "Just brakes" quote me $89 to change the pads. That sounds too good to be true.
View 5 RepliesI have a intermittent noise from the center of my touareg. It is a squeel or high pitched rubbing sound and seems to be related to load on drive line. I have heard about center driveshaft bearing problems, could this be it.What repairs are available
View 2 RepliesI have a 2005 Trailblazer EXT 4wd. I have an issue with my front driveshaft. I have been hearing a squeaking in a tin can kind of sound. It is kind of hard to describe. I thought front brakes. Checked them and they are fine. I crawled up under the front end and took off the skid shield to look around. Since it was in 2wd I tried to turn the front driveshaft by hand and there was the sound. The driveshaft does turn and the sound was appearing to come from the front diff.
I thought "Oh Crap" is there fluid in the front diff. It would make sense if it was empty to make a sound like this. I unscrewed the filler hole and there was fluid. Then I decided to flush and fill the front diff with fresh fluid. It was pretty dark and I don't know when the last time the front diff was serviced. I took it out for test drive and still have the noise. What i am asking now is what to look for next? Like I said, when turning the front driveshaft by hand in 2wd it makes that sound.
By the way, 4wd works just fine in all modes.
So I have 3 rear u joints and a vibration. I swear I read some where that there was a change to the rear shaft to aid in vibrations. So if that's the case could someone point me in the right thread or tell me what one to use. I have access to both....
View 14 RepliesI suspect my rear driveshaft is causing the vibration/noise I thought was coming from the front. I posted a few days ago about how I suspected it was my front wheel bearings making noise. Now its vibrating real bad and feels like a universal joint.
Can I pull the rear driveshaft out and drive off the front wheels with the switch in the 4x4 position? Last year my wife drove for a few days with no front driveshaft as I had one on order. It worked fine, for that.
I just want to go for a test drive to make sure that its the rear shaft, and not something else.
When I bought my 05 350 dually it had been wrecked, the rear diff was under the bumper and most of the rear suspension, including the back part of the rear drive shaft was in the bed of the truck. I have gotten everything back in place, and have driven the truck for a few weeks, but I knew I was going to have to replace the ujoints because there was visible damage to one of the caps. I have also had a vibration at about 45 mph. I had no way of knowing how the original driveshaft was oriented at the slip yoke so I went with best guess. Now in my research I read that if the driveshaft is not put back exactly in the same position vis a vis the slip yoke it will be out of balance.
Also if the drive shaft is dropped it is scrap, and if I have any lift on the truck {it had 4 inches when I got it} the whole thing will shake itself to pieces. Most of the answers to other drive shaft questions talk about taking things to a good driveshaft shop. No such thing here in the vast stretches of My state. I am pretty much on my own as far as building or repairing this thing. Is there any way to determine how the shaft was originally oriented? I also have some damage on the end of the yoke and will have some trouble getting the ujoint apart. Is the shaft now junk? And if I get an ebay replacement, how do I tell if that shaft is in the right orientation?
I want to and went to buy a new 2012 F350 leftover - everything is good except that Ford.com says the truck was initially put into service In September of 2012 and therefore my warranty will expire in September of 2015 instead 2016.
Dealer says it's an error and will be corrected AFTER I buy the truck, so far I have been unable to get a straight answer from Ford.
Any information about being able ot change the original date a vehicle is put into service ?
My 1997 4.0 Rear Wheel Drive is making a clicking noise when it is put into gear or when it switches from drive to reverse and vice versa. Sound is coming from the back of van. Does not make noise all the time. Drove 50 miles last night with no problems and minimal clicking. Could it be U-Joints going bad? Or is this a different problem?
View 6 RepliesI have been hearing a rattle from the left side of the car. By accident I found that when the rear left sunshade is extended the rattle goes away. When it is retracted it seems to sit in the door frame perfectly. My 05 Treg has 5000 miles on it and I have had this problem for the last 2000 miles.
View 1 RepliesProper alignment and re-installation of the front spline on the rear driveshaft of my 2015 F350.
I removed my rear driveshaft recently (it slipped right out upon removal without any force or resistance), and I'm getting ready to re-install it again this weekend, but I've noticed that one of the grooves between the array of male splines on the shaft itself appears to be slightly different than the rest - it seems to be slightly wider. It even has a white-colored stripe of paint down the full length of the groove as if it were denoting it as being somehow different from the rest?
Problem is, when visually inspecting the splines on the inside of the receiving yoke (the part that the spline fits into), I do NOT see any such differences. In other words, it doesn't appear that there is only ONE way to properly insert the front splined-end of the driveshaft. What am I missing here?
Is the front splined-end of the rear driveshaft intended to be inserted into the yoke in ANY position around the dial? Or is there only ONE specific position or orientation that it is intended to be inserted or installed? NOTE: I've seen references elsewhere on-line that seem to indicate the need for proper alignment when there are multiple U-Joints, and maybe this is a part of it (?), but I'm not quite sure which U-Joints to consider or how to interpret such an "alignment".
I had the exact same problem with my 20th AE GTI... Any solutions out there? This is for a 2008 T2 ...
View 6 RepliesWe've had a few cold mornings here in NY, especially at the time I leave the house where it's 10-15 degrees. I started the engine on these cold mornings. However, whether I warm her up or not I get a squealing noise from what I believe to be the steering. If I move the steering wheel (the first time it happened I was getting in and shifted the steering wheel), I get a very high pitched squeal. Once I've driven her a few minutes, the squealing disappears. But it doesn't matter how long the car has been running before I drive, I always get the noise on cold mornings. If it's warmer, no noise. This is my first winter with her, so I don't know what's normal and what's not.
View 11 Replies2004 egg with excessive brake squeal? I have under 5k miles and it's pretty loud. My dealer is covering it, but VW refused to cover it as a warranty item. Even though I love my vehicle, I'm forced to agree with other posters that feel VW isn't ready to be a luxury vehicle provider. I don't think I'd have gotten that response from BMW, Lexus, Accura, or Mercedes.
View 7 RepliesWhen I step on the brakes during traffic & released it to roll the wheels, I hear the brakes squeaking a few rounds & then it will disappear. It sounds like the brake is still engage with the rotor & doesn't fully release until a few roll. This happens more during warmer days.
View 6 RepliesI did a search for this symptom but didn't see anything that sounded right... High pitched squeal from right front wheel well area (sounds like a tea kettle actually).
Starts at 10+mph and is speed variable (faster=louder)... but not effected by applying the brakes (so doesn't seem to be related to the brake assembly)... It doesn't happen all the time... but getting more frequent... annoying...
wheel bearing?
air suspension?
What it could be?
My Treg has about 3K miles on it right now, and since I picked it up, the brakes have squealed (some times VERY loud, some times just a slight squeak at the end of the braking process). It is currently in the shop for the second time to get a fix for this or an adjustment, and I just got a call from my service advisor telling me there is nothing they can do to quiet the brakes--it is the nature of brakes to squeak and squeal.
I realize that brake dust (and man, there is a lot of that on this vehicle) can make the brakes squeal a bit, but does it even make sense that they would tell me that brakes are supposed to squeal?
I am also having a sticking door handle and a defective ac/heat control issue looked at while the Treg is in (I can illuminate both the "auto" and "econ" buttons at the same time, instead of one switching the other off). Should a vehicle at this price point have noisy brakes?
Reading thru all the squealing noise posts made me want to ask about mine. I have started to notice a high pitched squeal/squeak that occurs while sitting stopped with your foot on the brake...then let off the brake and take off and get this momentary squeak that doesn't continue (at least I can't hear it). It seems to stop once you get going again.
Seems to be coming from the passenger side front. I think I started noticing this after my most recent tire rotation and balance. What the brake wear indicator sounds like or if I will get an icon on the mfi when the brakes need service. The brakes do not squeal when in use. I currently have 27000 miles.

Of late, I have noticed a hi-pitched squeal, but only on sharp right turns!
I only just noticed it recently, the one time I had the radio off and windows down. Normally, the sound is too faint to hear.I did a few turns, both left and right, and it definitely only occurs on right turns -- eg when turning the corner.Since I only just noticed it, I have not yet brought it to my mechanic.
Also, I would note that the sound does not occur if I turn the wheel when stopped (eg at a light). It's definitely a car-in-motion symptom. Any possible areas to check?
I have a 2005 prius. Got it 7 months ago. I hear brakes squeal when braking. I think I may need new pads. Are they easy to replace?
View 4 RepliesI have a 2005 Jeep Liberty. It recently started making a noise that I think is most accurately described as a groan/squeal. It only happens at low speed, < 20MPH, and happens more often the lower the speed. It also seems more likely to happen when the vehicle is turning. I haven't noticed any other problems with the car. The brakes and serpentine belt were recently replaced.
The brakes were replaced because they were starting to get old, looked corroded, and were starting to squeal when braking. The serpentine belt was replaced because it had a crack in it and was under warranty after being replaced for the same reason only 10 months ago. I don't believe that the noise is related to the brakes as the noise has occurred many times when the brakes were not being applied and it does not appear to occur any more or less frequently when they are applied
