Touareg :: 2004 - Engine Do Not Turn Over Intermittently?
Aug 30, 2011
I have a 04 V8 Automatic. In the last few days, only once in a while, with no repeating pattern, it has had trouble starting. The starter cycles but the engine do not turn over.
Battery: I have reviewed the battery charge by checking the voltage on the dash meter before attempting to start and it is consistently over 12V and at 14V when it is running. Usually after multiple attempts it starts or in some cases if I wait and come back it starts. I have never had to jump it. Based in this I ruled out the battery since - if it was drained or not holding its charge I should not have been able to start it - correct?
Items draining battery: I read many posts indicating problems with items such as the compass draining the battery after the vehicle is shut off. I do not think this is the issue either since the battery is holding its charge.
Fuel Pump: I am thinking it is the fuel pump not properly priming when I open the door. I tried to test this by opening the door, listening for the pump priming then attempting to start it. It started whether or not I heard the pump prime. Should the pump prime every time after the engine is shut off? Is this a valid test or does the pump only prime after driving? Is there a better way to validate if it is the pump? Would this show up in the error codes? (I do not have a way to check the codes other than taking it to the dealer)

Without any particular known triggers, the car either will not even turn over, or sometimes the electrical will come on, but the car won't start. Wiggling the keys and steering wheel don't necessarily work, and I can't shift it at all when it's not on. Took it to the garage and left it there for days -- never did it for them. Starter? What to do?

I recently went camping and had the back lid up... and the light on the lower portion would not go out for an extended period of time...( at least 15 minutes long ) then if I opened a door I would have to wait again... the same with the interior lights of the storage area... any way to change the duration for this? had to finally use duct tape over the lights...

I just aquired a 2004 Touareg V10 TD. Two things:
How do I turn of the NAV Warning accept and the seat belt chime? I don't have easy access to a VAG-COM?? Will the dealer do it for me?

My 04 V8 didn't come with the manual when I bought it. I found a document online showing that the 2004 only needed service/oil change every 10K but I wanted to double check that as it seemed a lot of miles to be between services, and I'm at 14,990 miles right now so if I need a 15K service I need to get it scheduled.
Also, how do I turn on the heated steering wheel thing? Just for the "cool" factor I want to test it out but I can't find the control anywhere for it. I'm assuming my car has it since it has the pass through ski bag.

This is the first time I ever encountered this then again this is my first non-Honda/Acura vehicle. I pulled into my driveway turned the engine off , opened the door and the sound that signals your lights are on was blaring. I looked and did not have any lights on and all doors/hatch were shut. I could not figure it out why... then I noticed my right turn signal light was on.............. so I clicked it off and the noise stopped. Is this normal for the engine to be off and the signal light stay on and wail if it has not reset itself from a turn?

We have a 2004 2.4L 4 cyl Santa Fe. Turn ignition key get a click and engine will not turn over. Push key in harder and engine may start fine. If it is the key ignition switch or something else. is there somewhere I can look to see how to remove the ignition switch?

Lat week I dropped my '04 V6 Touareg off at my dealer for some minor warranty work. On the way to the dealer, I noticed a weird noise and vibration whenever I turned the steering wheel. I mentioned this to the dealer when I dropped the car off. They called me later saying that there was a leak in the steering rack and the whole thing needed to be replaced. The car wasn't safe to drive, so they would provide a rental.
Today, I get a call saying that the steering rack finally came in, but that upon installing it they noticed that something connectet to the steering or front suspension (I can't remember what it was, tie rod perhaps?) was bent, probably from hitting a pot hole, and that therefore the replacement would not be covered by warranty. Needless to say, this will not be cheap.
I do not take my Touareg off road, and I don't remember hitting any pot hole so hard that it could have bent something. My questions are:
- Is this a known or common problem/issue with Touaregs?
- Could hitting a pot hole or something a long time ago cause a leak many months later?

Recently however, I have had a problem starting it up on the 1st attempt. I would say that at least a third of the time the engine starts and then immediately cuts out, with the battery light coming on. On the occasions that the engine stays on, it feels as if it might just cut out in the first couple of minutes. It normally starts, and stays on, on the 2nd attempt of starting. I suspect it may just be that my battery is just coming to the end of it's useful life.

My 2004 Camy XLE 4 cyl has developed an intermittent problem. So far this has only happened after the car has sat in the sun at my office for the day and the temp is around 90. When I begin to take off the transmission disengages intermittently and the engine light comes on. After a couple of miles the problem stops, but the engine light stays on. Usually the light goes off the next day.
I have had the car to dealer. First time reset code P0500 and problem returned. Second time, dealer found update for engine control module. "performed to reflash ECM per TSB 0072-04.

My check engine light comes on intermittently, fuel consumption normal. I have not had any noticeable performance issues. I took it to O'Rielly's for a scan but they could not establish a connection to get a readout. Is there a special scan tool needed? The on board Lan Monitor shows EMV codes below, are they meaningful in any way?
Code Sub-code

01-D5 190-52-F
01-D8 190-35-1

I have a 2004 Accent GS. It is an automatic. I have had it for almost a year.
In early November, the check engine light came on when the temperature dropped drastically and it went off when it warmed up a bit about 3 days later. Since then it seems to come on randomly and stay on for a few days then go off (usually around once-twice a month). Then in late December I noticed that the car had trouble starting after I refueled it, the first two times I though it was because I had let the fuel get down too much. Now every time I fuel up it does this. But just the first time turning on the car and no other time after that.
The check engine light had not come on again for almost a month, and then about a week ago it came on again. I double checked all the fluids and the gas cap but that's about as far as my knowledge of cars goes. When the light has come on I have not really noticed any handling differences. However since I need to put the car through an inspection very soon it is now concerning me a bit more. What could be causing the check engine light to go on and off?

I have a 2004 Audi A6 wagon that has an intermittently flashing check engine light. I took it to the dealership to have the codes read and they told me that they got codes for Cylinder 2 and Cylinder 5 misfires. Additionally they got a code saying the Engine Coolant Temperature Sender was electronically faulty. What is this part and what does it do? Is it essential to fix it immediately?
The dealership recommended changing the spark plugs and the air filters for the cylinder misfire issue. We are also talking about replacing the timing belt since the car has 105k miles on it. I know there are several other parts that are replaced during the timing belt replacement (like the water pump, thermostat, oil seals, etc). Is it essential to replace these items if there is no immediate need to do so?

After having the rear axle seal replaced 3rd time, my 2004 Toyota makes a sound/noise behind the dash, drivers side, in the engine compartment. Noise is intermittent and only when braking. Hard to describe....electronic sound. Brake pedal feels like ABS system is kicking in. But no ABS light comes on. Mechanics all tell me, "when light comes on, bring it back". Had the brake system flushed today? Still makes the noise.

I just did my plugs in my 04 F150 5.4 The truck had a really bad miss, and I figured it was time for plugs. I broke all eight plugs which I expected as the plugs were in there since new and had 120 000 miles on them. Replaced with champion double platinum and I am not certain that was the best idea.
The truck is much better with the new plugs but still has a miss and a rough vibration. The truck seems to shake side to side at idle but smooths out during normal driving conditions. I have noticed that it seems to lack power intermittently if that makes any sense. Also, the check engine light was on for a while but I tracked that down to a broken wire in the evap system.
So I am thinking first step is to verify that the coils and boots were installed correctly. I have to see if we have the scope module for the Genisys at work. I am going to check for vacuum leaks as well. I just changed the fuel filter and no change. Is there anything else I should look at? Would cam phasers cause a rough idle and intermittent loss of power?
I don't drive this truck every day so I can take it apart to diagnose it further...

With the DRL light on, sometimes the dash board is illuminated and sometimes it is not. I can't figure out what triggers the dash lights to be on together with the DRL's.

My turbos shut down intermittently, after several hours of highway driving and after shutting the ignition off. Upon re-start, the check engine light illuminates and I have no turbos. Letting the car sit (turned off) for several hours will re-set them back into operation. Three visits to the shop have not solved the problem and the technicians have no clues. I don't think the turbos themselves are to blame. More likely the computer is getting a signal from somewhere that is prompting it to set a trouble code and disable the turbos. Is this what is called "limp mode"?

Quick question for the techies of the group: my right brake light goes out intermittently. I get the warning in the MFI whenever it goes out. Lasts for about 10 mins and then works fine again for about 2 weeks, then another failure for 10 mins, then good for 2 weeks, etc. The dealer says the bulb is good and he can't find any other problem. Someone suggested there may be a short or it could be the wiring. But can I do if its never "out" when I bring it to the dealer and he says "what am I supposed to fix?"

Exhaust signal on MFI ... Yesterday in the morning this sign came few times blinking and then became solid. I felt like the engine was "hesitating" and not reacting. Later on the day it disappeared.
This morning came again. When I check the manual at section 3.1 page 39, it says something about "not enough oxygen..." Its been cold here in Charlotte NC, around 28F overnight and I am leaving the car on the driveway since we moved to a new home. Should I rush to the dealer?

We have a 2004 Volkswagen Touareg . 1000 miles ago the check engine light came on and the dealer (I will never go back again) said the catalytic converters were shot. We were going to get second opinion but when we picked up the car the engine light was off....so 1,000 miles later it came back on. Is it a good for us to buy a diagnostic tester and see what the issue is ourselves then take it to a mechanic and have them fix that exact issue?
