Tiguan :: Subtle Clunk When Accelerating Or Decelerating?
Jul 12, 2014
I have a 2011 Tiguan S automatic. If I'm coasting around 20 mph and hit the pedal, I can feel a clunk or catch type feeling. It also happens when decelerating and down shifting around slow speeds. I know this has been discussed before, but no outcomes were stated.

The vehicle in question is not our 2006 Passat
Car in Question:
2010 CC 2.0T DSG
12,4xx miles
I have noticed that when accelerating and decelerating I feel/hear an annoying clunk. I remember reading about this issue when I was reading this section all the time when our '06 was new, but when I went back and searched there only seemed to be people complaining and no real solutions to the issue. It really is hard to describe, but it seems to happen when slowing down the most, say when approaching a speed bump. I notice that if you apply the brakes longer ahead of time the clunk is less frequent, but its not like I wait until 3ft before the bump and slam on the brakes (also when decelerating into a slow corner/highway on-ramp).
I experience the same clunk when accelerating, usually when using more throttle than less; again not flooring it or anything too aggressive. One more example where I feel/hear this a lot is when coming home; I have a long narrow driveway w/ a garage at the end that I back into everyday. When I stop and put the car in reverse I get the clunk, but not until I press the throttle slightly. One weird thing is that I notice this clunk more when I have been in the car longer, with more stop and go traffic, in and out of stores etc. I have felt this on our '06, but not to this level
Some may say that I my problem could be solved by being more gentle on the throttle, but in all honesty I think I use it normally. There should be no clunk no matter how aggressive I am.
When I was at the dealer for my 10,000 mile service I mentioned the problem to the tech and they said they would take it for a test ride and report back. They told me that it was under normal operation and that the sound I heard was the DSG transmission going into and out of gear. I do know what they mean about the DSG, but this is a different problem, and if that was the case I wouldn't hear the clunk in instances such as reversing into my driveway.

I had the front engine mount replaced on my V6 - 3VZ and most of the what I call a clunk has been solved but when traveling at most speeds and taking my foot off the accelerator the transmission seems to clunk and when I reapply acceleration it clunks again. Its like the transmission has to catch up or decrease to the engine speed......my way of describing it!
The mechanic who replaced my front engine mount talked to his friend in the transmission business and they feel it may be a chain in the transmission that is stretched (like a bicycle chain) and the slack causes the clunk. I have never heard of a transmission using a chain, however, I have no clue. Is there a chain? If there is, can it be tightened? If there is not, is there something else that can be tightened? What can I do to eliminate the clunk?
The fluid was changed last year and is red. We are retired and can't afford a transmission rebuild. Everything else is in good shape on this 1992 with 229,000 kms. at this time.

I've noticed that my V6 and the 2 dealer's loaners have the same subtle hesitation in 3rd and 4th when acceleration. Casual, everyday accelerating. Less noticeable if you hit it hard.

I drove my wifes car today for the first time in forever, and I noticed that it makes a thumping sound between 10 and 20 mph. It does it whether I'm accelerating or decelerating, and it makes no difference whether I'm turning right or left. The car has 60K on it...

I just had my stock clutch replaced with a South Bend Stage II, of the most recent generation.
It's making a weird noise, and sounds pretty bad... kinda like a rough TDI. It makes the sound when in gear, either accelerating or decelerating. There isn't any noise to speak of at idle.
The sound it makes is kinda like this: [URL]................................

Experienced a rough shift (accelerating or decelerating) in 2005 - 2007 ford / mercury 500/Montego/Fusion/Milan with the aisin 6 speed transmission? What is the source of the trouble and has Ford acknowledged a problem?

I have just purchased a brand new LX570.
I can only explain that the vehicle vibrates. Whether driving, accelerating or decelerating there is a constant vibration just like driving on a poor road surface. We have superbly flat and new Roads in Dubai, and I drive them every day in my 2 other (far less expensive) 4WD's and I do not feel shaken, stirred or positively nauseous. The only time u feel at ease in my new Lexus is when I am stationary. Transmission also occasionally lags and I can feel the gear changes, sometimes a judder and a bit of a jump as it searches for the gear. Take off is sluggish (i know it's a big car!) but I feel it's not good enough for the car that it is supposed to be.
This is my first Lexus. I opted for the full top of the range with s few extra options and a big spend. This is certainly not the car I was expecting and it is definitely not the Lexus experience that I thought that I would get. What is the problem with vibration? The whole body shakes ( not the steering wheel) albeit mildly, it vibrates almost constantly. it is simply not a smooth drive.
The Lexus service centre has changed all the tyres at 100 km claiming flat spots due to transit and storage. The car now has 300 km on the clock. It's not the tyres or the alignment. They claim to have run full diagnostics but found nothing. I can't believe that his issue is on my car only. I have taken 2 other drivers out and they agree with my concerns, something is definitely wrong.

I am currently having a clunking noise coming from the front driver's side when accelerating from a stop or decelerating to a stop. It seems to happen only at low speeds and only on the driver's side. No strange vibrations or noise when turning or when going over bumps. I am thinking strut mounts or possibly trans mount.

2004 Ford Focus ZX3. Manual Transmission. Alternator replaced 1-2 years ago for different symptoms/issue.
My problem is that the headlights dim or flash (pulse down to very very dim then back to full) when accelerating or decelerating. Pretty much only when in gear. They will go back to normal when I depress the clutch pedal (usually I think) or am coasting in neutral. The fan in the car and other electrics/indicators seem to suffer from same power fluctuations too.
A little while after seeing this, I noticed a faint then more pronounced clicking coming from left side of dash. (Fuse/relay box?) It seemed to click when the "shift" light would pop on and off about 20% of the time the light did. Otherwise mostly when accel/decel.I started pulling relays and driving around a parking lot to see if it was one. The click seemed to disappear after pulling the horn relay. (And not the "Battery saver" relay next to it. Odd) The clicking issue does not happen all of the time when driving. The power dimming does.

We have a 2005 honda civic hybrid; there is a squealing noise coming from front passenger side, when braking, when accelerating, decelerating, but not while driving at speeds of 30 mph, straight. Also when backing up, turning wheels. It's going to the mechanic on monday for regular maintenance, 100K miles, etc.

I recently bought an 04 lariat crew cab with 56K miles 5.4 and auto trans. Before i bought it i complained about an exhaust noise and acceleration issue at 40mph and 1100 rpm as well as the ac not being very cold. They replaced the exhaust manifold on the passenger side, coil pack on the #3 cylinder, a transmission flush, a flash drive update and recharged the ac. This seemed to take care of the problem but i mostly drove under 30mph and did not notice it. I took it on a few road trips, and country roads and noticed the problem of sputtering and shuttering between 40-60 mph's after decelerating and slowly accelerating. The problem occurs consistently with ac and over-drive on in the above mentioned conditions and mph range. Problem is less noticeable with ac off and have not noticed it at all with over-drive off. It feels like a limited slip kicking in or driving on dry pavement in 4wd. Tranny shifts fine through all gears in a straight pull of acceleration and even full throttle pulls. Problem only occurs after decelerating and slowly accelerating. I don't know of any codes as I don't have a code reader, but I have not had any check engine lights come on nor has the dealer mentioned any codes.

Have owned a 2014 LS460 since April. Ever since then, when accelerating decelerating between 1000 and 3000 rpm, we hear a whining and grinding noise.

when i accelerate or let off the peddle I hear and aloud thug or dull bang. I've checked and greased all the u joints. Disconnected the carrier bearing and separated the drive shaft and greased it up. Still get the noise I have very little play in the carrier bearing but I don't think that's the problem. It sounds to me like might be at the transmission. What do y'all think it is?

My Tig has been doing a sharp clunk (single) for awhile when going a bit too fast over speed bumps. I just ignored it, as I'm not flying over bumps regularly and I had just replaced the OEM struts all around. Now when accelerating over 60 kph the car has a side to side shimmy. Also when compressing or unloading the front end suddenly, like with dips on the road, makes it clunk. Checking the various suspension components?

Yesterday I was on the highway - dry surface, a little bit of wind, but not much. While driving I kept feeling *kind of* like the Tiguan was getting pushed around by the wind, but not really. I looked at the trees, at the other cars and trucks on the road and none of them seemed to be moving around like me.
It was "kind of" like getting pushed by the wind - but actually more like the car was "crabbing" ... like the wheels were not spinning at the same speed. Very similar to the way it feels on snow/slippery conditions when traction control kicks in and straigtens out the Tiguan. It was like the front was fighting the rear and the car was twisting.
I chalked it up to being windy, although I've been in the Tiguan before in windy conditions and this was not the same.
Then today, I was leaving Home Depot. I closed the door, started the Tiguan, foot on brake and put the car in drive. Then immediately I had 4 tap-tap-tap-tap. Very much like if someone was pulling into the spot behind me and tapped me with their bumper.
I spun around in the seat and no one was in the car behind me, plus I have the trailer hitch in, so it would be a different feeling.
hhmmm ... very odd. I put the car back in park, back to drive and no tap.
Now I am curious. I turn the car off, wait a second, start the car again, back to drive, and sure enough another tap.
This is not the engagement of the transmission, this is a harder tap that happens after the transmission engages.
Tried it another couple of times and can replicate it.
I have to drive by the exit where my VW dealer is to get back home, so I stop by *HOPING* that I could replicate it again to the service manager, and sure enough - close the door, start the Tiguan, foot on brake and put the car in drive. Transmission engages, then immediately tap-tap-tap-tap
"hhmm that's not right he says". It was too late to get it into the shop tonight, but I left it overnight. Given my odd driving experience yesterday and the tap-tap-tap today, he was not sure if it was a safety issue with continuing to drive it.

The car: 2012 Tiguan SE 4mo (auto)
The noise: there is a loud pop/cluck/knock from the front drivers side footwell, can sometimes be felt in the pedals
When it occurs: Most frequently it occurs on deceleration. Letting off the gas, there is a slight delay then the noise. It doesn't happen every time. The intensity of it is very sporadic and unpredictable. In stop and go traffic, it is typically the worst, gently accelerate, let off the gas, loud clunk. During other normal driving, accelerate up to normal (55mph) speed, let off gas, quieter clunk, intermittent. Infrequently it makes the noise when I shift into reverse. I can also hear it faintly when i start the car sometimes.
There seems to be very little correlation to vehicle speed and the noise. It is typically louder at low.

Two weeks into an 09 CPO Tiguan and I have a question about a clunk sound. I hear it (and kind of feel it under my feet) if I pull off the gas after a burst of acceleration. Kind of a muted clunk -- not too bad -- from underneath the floorboard, right as the car is getting back to its equilibrium position. Doesn't affect the driving, so my gut says not transmission (auto).

2010 SE 4Motion: My Tiguan's tranny seems to clunk pretty bad when coming to a stop. Wasn't a problem until after I got flashed to APR stage 1 so it may still be adapting, but I'm not sure.

Have just picked up a 2011 Tiguan Highline, and there is a loose clunk in the front going over high frequency bumps in the road. I own a MKIV Jetta TDi and it feels similar to bad sway bar bushings on my MKIV, however it's not the bushings on the Tiguan.
I crawled underneath and tried to find looseness in the suspension with no luck. The sway bar end links seem tight (compared to the MKV Jetta I also have), and the strut mounts do not seem to be loose.
What I did find were some suspect control arm bushings. I'm new to suspension noises in this platform, our MKV has been flawless for the past 7 years. Could these worn bushings cause a loose clunk?
I also checked the subframe bolts and fuel lines that come up in common searches.

Just changed the struts, control arms (both used) and sway bar links (new) in front and when braking or accelerating there is a clunk on the right side. Checked the bolt on the control arm and its tight.
