If you listen closely, you can hear a weird humming sound while it's idling, not sure what it is. It doesn't happen all the time as far as I can remember.

I just towed a friends' boat 1500 kms and noticed while walking around with the vehicle running, I could hear what sounded like a slight humming or hissing sound kicking on and off in the rear, almost like an auto-levelling setup. As far as I know the Tiguan's don't come with anything like that. I don't hear it when nothing is hooked up.

View 5 RepliesWe just brought home a new Tiguan 2012 Automatic and when we are in Drive (D) and going about 26-30 mph the transmission stays in a high gear (5th) and makes a vibrating hum.
It happens on a flat road when someone is in front of us and forces us to stay in the 26-30mph range.
It feels like it wont drop back to 4th at this speed and is overloaded in 5th. When we give it some gas it will hum and lag even more then finallly downshift.
Tiptronic and Sport seem fine but Drive does not feel normal in this range.
When we took back to dealer at 130 miles on the odometer, the tech sat in on the drive and experienced the symptom. His conclusion was that the car is in its "Adaptive Learning" phase and it should work itself out after about 600+ miles.
It could happen once a month or 3 times a day. No pattern and never the first time I start my car for the day. But I will be running errands, park the tiguan, run into a store for 5, 15 or 30 minutes and when I get back in my car and start it up and go, it dies when shifting from 1st to 2nd. I know how to drive stick. This doesn't happen every time. I have called/taken it to the dealer 5 times and they have no clue because it never happens with them and I cannot predict when it will happen again. Also, on occasions, when i start my car, halfway through the day, the engine will idle really rough then the RPM's will spike and the car gives itself gas and my foot is definitely on the brake. These little issues are starting to piss me off, especially since the dealer just shrugs its shoulders.
View 12 RepliesSo my wife's Tig has been acting a little goofy lately since it got cold out. The RPM's are almost always around 1,000 & the dealer says that it's set for 920 from the factory. In warmer weather, it idles at 800 RPM (like on my Tig).
Which is odd right there, but something they can't change they say. Anyways....so when it's idling high, when it's cold outside, there is a loud moaning/howling noise from the passenger side engine/dash area.
It only happens with your foot on the brake & in drive while idling. If you drop it to neutral, it doesn't do it. Only in Drive. So needless to say, you hear it at every stop light.
It's pretty intrusive and can't be missed. Even my wife, who is oblivious to such things, mentioned it to me. So I took it to the dealer and they clearly heard the noise too. A week later and no updates until yesterday.....He says that all their FWD Tiguans (auto trans) make the same noise. Only the 4motion doesn't. So they're just saying "they all do it," so it's normal.
Sound is coming from the back wheels i believe. Iv been driving with winter tires on since last year December. I only hear it when im going over 60km/h on a curve on highway.
View 1 RepliesI hear this humming sound when hit 70mph and I am on the gas. However it lasts till 73mph or so and go away!. Below is the pattern I observed;
1. On gas (accelerating), when hit 70mph (not even 69 mph) I start hearing humming sound. It will last till 73mph and goes away. Not able to pin point the source. I feel it is originating somewhere closer to transmission shift.
2. Decelerate from above 73mph and no gas given, when hit 70 I don't hear the sound. Press the gas pedal, I hear.
3. Set the cruise at 70, I hear.
4. The hmmmm sound appears only between 70-73 mph speed and while on gas.
What is this sound?. What is the source?
Just to start off my tires are hankook ventus v4's
- 2 months ago I had my tires rotated front to rear for the first time since ive owned the car. (Previous owner had put new tires a little before i bought it) Pulling away I immidiately noticed a humming sound whenever i left off the gas. Sounded kind of like the tire was rubbing against the fender but nothing was. Went back and they said it was just the way the tires had worn.
- A couple days later I had the tires rotated BACK to the way they originally were and the noise was gone.
- OK, so a couple weeks ago i go to put two front tires and get a four wheel alignment. After this the noise started right up again. Went back and they said it was because the alignment had been so off that it had caused the rear tires to wear uneven.
- FINALLY, i went back and put two rear tires of the exact same type and guess what...the noise didnt go away...at all
So ive ruled out it being a noise from the tires as they are all brand new. The tire shop said that it could be the wheel bearings but ive always known for wheel bearings to make a deeper hum and this noise is only when i left off the gas and increases with speed, touch the gas and it goes away.
Our car is a 2003 2.2L 4 Door. 132,000 miles.
About 3 days ago it started doing this thing where once we hit somewhere between 30-40 mph, it started making a low pitch humming sound. At 40 MPH+ it is very loud. To me it sounds like an airplane, I don't know how else to explain it. There is no shaking, though sometimes I can almost feel the vibration from the humming at my feet. My husband says that the higher the RPM's, the louder and slightly higher pitched the sound is. If we go below 30 MPH it stops.
We were a little late on our oil change and I assumed that was it, but got it changed today and it's still doing it. Other than that, about 2 and a half weeks ago, our rear driver side tire went flat. My husband was in the middle of no where on the way home from work so he used Slime and that fixed it (never went to get it repaired because we didn't have the time and it didn't go flat again).
Could it be that the tires are not balanced correctly because of that, and it is causing the humming?
Also, this may be completely unrelated but: The only other problem we have had/still have with the car is that about 2 years ago we drove from Texas to Nevada, and at one of our stops the coolant dumped out (did not overheat/no other issues). Took it to 2 different shops and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Drove fine until 6 months ago driving from Nevada to New Mexico, it did it again, but this time it also overheated. The mechanic said it was the water pump. Replacing the water pump (which is expensive!) did not fix it, so without consulting us they also changed the thermostat. Charged us for both, told us it was fixed, and about 2 month ago it did it again, but did not overheat/no other issues again. Hasn't done it since...seems it only happens on long drives. Anyway, I don't think it's related, but I thought I'd mention it.
I have an 06 4-cylinder Camry LE. I recently had the belt tensioner, idler bearing, and water pump replaced under warranty. I originally went in to have it looked at because it was making a rattling/humming sound when I put it into gear, but would go away for the most part after running down the road for awhile. The other day, I had to back up to the house (on an incline) and it started making that same noise, but louder. For the most part, it goes away after driving, but I can still feel that humming vibration in the gas pedal however. I took it into the dealer and had them inspect it again. I was told that it is nothing to be concerned about. The computer was checked and came back clean. It was stated in my invoice as the following:
"Due to prolonged disconnect of the battery during previous repair. The engine needs to relearn all it's preset values. This condition is not a problem."
I have stumbled across others stating a possible valve issue, along with "you need to replace the water pump," which I already did.
I am hearing this buzzing sound in my trunk its really loud for ex: those annoying sounds people played as kids that people over "18" cant hear...back to the point its by my rear left tail light inside that area where all the wiring is also kinda hear it where the spare tire is all my lights work I unplugged the light and it still made the sound! It only does it when the car is running. Car is stock aside that it has no radio and the cd changer in the area that noise is coming from idk if its because a few wires that connect to the cd changer or what ever it is are unplugged but its coming from that area of the car its really high pitch and annoying.
View 13 RepliesThis is a question about a Subaru Outback, but probably pertains to many other cars as well. I have a 2006 Subaru Outback with 112K miles. I bought new tires for it in May 2012, and in September 2013 I started to notice a low humming/buzzing sound while driving. I looked online and came up with 2 options - either the wheel bearings or the tires. Because the sound changed pitch depending on the road surface, I thought it must be the tires. I took it in for an oil change and had the mechanics check the bearings. They said the bearings were fine, but the tires were cupping and feathering badly because I hadn't rotated them, and that was the source of the noise.
I had them rotate the tires and do an alignment and went on my way. The sound slowly got worse - it peaks at ~65 MPH and then changes pitch above 70 MPH and is not so bothersome - and I started to lose gas mileage ( 4-5 MPG). On Dec. 30, 2013 I took it in for the next oil change and bought brand new tires - Bridgestone Turanza Serenity designed for quietness - and had them do an alignment, and drove away only to find that the noise is still there and I still have lousy gas mileage.
My next thoughts were the transmission or the catalytic converter, but since the noise doesn't change when I take my foot off the gas or put it in neutral I don't think it is either one of those. The alignment showed that the Caster on both front tires is off, but since both tires are off by roughly equal amounts I was told that this is not something to worry about. I do occasionally notice some vibration while driving or while idling, but it is intermittent and I don't think it has anything to do with the noise.
I've noticed that when I have the fan on...A/C on or off...there is a humming noise coming from the front of the car at approximately 900RPM - 1100RPM... At first I thought it was the A/C compressor but there's a sound even without the A/C on... the sound is like a motor running, low pitch sound...it is very noticeable when you are driving at very low speeds like when you drive around a parking lot looking for a spot... it is also noticeable when you are coasting to a red light or stop sign and the RPM's hit about 1000... not sure if it's the fan making the noise because it doesn't have enough lubrication or something of a bigger problem...
View 8 Replies2013 ES350 silver for my wife - bought 3 months ago and drove 600 miles.
About one month ago, I could hear a humming sound at the back of the car (somewhere around backseat or in the trunk). At that time, car was parked in the garage. This sound is similar to having several honey bee in that area and humming at the same time. The sound disappeared by itself after several hours.
Yesterday, it happened again. We parked the car in the garage around 4pm and did not hear this sound at that time. At around 10pm, when I went to garage to get some tools, I heard this humming sound again. This morning, as soon as I woke up, I checked the car and the sound is gone.
I am not sure if there are any other reports of similar issue for 2013 ES350, or maybe this issue is just for my particular car? And this humming sound is not always there, so I am not sure how to repeat it in the repair department. Maybe I need to bring it to delaership and just let service technician take a look.
My 2005 Toyota 4Runner is the V8 version with 4 wheel drive. I'm getting a pulsating humming sound at around 70 MPH - woh woh woh. Thought it might be new tires but it stops the instant you let off the accelerator. Hard to pinpoint location but if I had to guess I'd say driver's side front.
View 4 RepliesMy DSG Autobahn 4 dr with 4800 miles has developed a humming and vibration at highway speeds and my dealer and I are stumped as to what it is. I don't really hear the humming until 60mph+ but then its a 1 second pulsing hum coming from the front of the car and I can feel some vibration through the pedals and floor board.
The dealer has checked all wheel bearings and actually replaced the passenger side front bearing. They have also rotated all the tires and one rim that was slightly bent was swapped with another wheel but this did nothing to eliminate the sound. I'm waiting for my dealer to get back to me of when a VW engineer would be available to have go at it.
My ES350 is always parked in my garage. One afternoon, I went into the garage to get something and I heard a humming sound coming from the car. It was very hard to identify where it was coming from. It sounded like a low horsepower compressor of some sort. I put my ear next to the rear wheel on the drivers side as this was the area the noise appeared to be coming from.
This is the second time I've experienced this happening. A couple things to note:
1. The car had not been operational for at least 8 hours.
2. There was no indicator lights on the dashboard flashing.
3. All doors were closed.
4. It seems to happen intermittently and I can't replicate on my own.
I just got my Prius in August. The car makes a humming sound when I accelerate and brake. Is this normal?
View 7 RepliesMy 2010 is humming like bad.....I think it's the rear. the faster you go, the louder it is. Put new tires on - same noise.
View 5 RepliesMy 2008 Prius had a front quarter panel replaced after my wife back in to a fire hydrant. The body work looks fine , no issue there, but now when the car is coasting with the gas engine off you can hear a humming sound that was not there before the repair. Also it does,nt seem to be recharging the hybrid battery at the same rate.My thought is maybe the body shop caused some damage to MG1 by spinning the front tires on a emision testing machine or rollers.Does special precautions would have to be used when testing wheel clearances after a quarter panel replacement on a hybrid? Would a body shop need to do this ?
