Over the last several days I've noticed a faint whining noise coming from the engine when I pull into the garage. Sounds similar to the noise you hear when you keep an elevator door open for too long.
This is the first turbo engine that I've had so I'm not really familiar with the sounds it may or may not produce, and whether this is normal behavior.
Turned my car (07 SE v7 with 240k on the clock) on this AM and there was a high pitched whine coming right from the engine bay - matched to the revs of the car, regardless of gear.
This is a new noise to me and the car - but I'm assuming it's some kind of belt issue.
I just picked up a 20th about a month ago. It has 50k on it and recently I've noticed a faint whining coming from under the hood, most noticeable under idle and it changes pitch when I turn the wheel. I check the P/S fluid and it was low so I topped it off and I believe it has improved a bit but not too sure because I haven't gotten a chance to drive it yet. The steering does feel a little heavy but I figured that's normal because, well it's not a cadillac.
View 1 RepliesI recently noticed some kind of a faint buzzing noise coming from the engine area. basically when the radio is off I can hear some kind of a buzzing noise under medium load, it sound like a loose heat shield or something. I took it to a dealer this morning, did a test drive with the tech who also heard the noise, got a call later on telling me that the noise is normal and is present on the other Tiguans as well.
View 4 RepliesOur 46K mile 2012 Tiguan starting making some pretty loud whining/growling/rattling engine noises recently so I took it to the dealer shop and they diagnosed a bad accessory belt tensioner. However, they didn't have one in stock and would have to order it. Well, that's fine but it's a 300 mile round trip to the dealer so I came home and ordered one from ECS Tuning.
I found a copy of an official VW (ETKA?) procedure on the web for replacing the tensioner for the TSI in a Golf so I suspect the procedure for a Tiguan is similar: remove the bolt for the secondary water pump and move the pump out of the way, remove the end bolt on the tensioner mounting shaft, remove the three bolts from the pendulum/dogbone, support the engine, remove the top two bolts from the passenger side engine mount, drop the engine about 2 inches and pull the tensioner out.
To be honest, I was very surprised that the dealership didn't have a tensioner in stock. This was a rather large and pretty good dealership shop (three service advisors). I guess accessory tensioner failure is really rare on the TSI.
I got in my car today and realized it was making a whining noise, kinda like the whine of a super charger, I don't hear it at idle but when I accelerate or rev it in neutral it gets louder and higher pitched. Friend had this problem in his Mercedes and he said it was a bad belt.
View 3 RepliesMy 2003 T-Bird (52,000 miles, original owner and only driver) has a fan coming on occasionally (in front) while I am driving. No warning lights. It goes off when I shut off the engine but then I get a high pitched whining sound (in front) that shuts off after a few minutes. I took into the dealer and they checked out my radiator level (full) but found a pinhole leak in the radiator hose. "The engine is not overheating, not to worry, fan is electronic and is normal". I don't think its normal since this is the first time its doing this after 9 years. Could this be the same problem as Elaina is having: An evaporative emissions pump sticky valve or leak in this system?
View 5 RepliesI recently replaced the fuel pump and afterward started noticing a buzzing/whining sound coming from under the hood. The noise goes away when I remove the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator and after the car has been driven for 1/2 to 1 hour. Sometimes it comes back, sometime not, but it always is there at a cold start. Had the shop take a look and they said the fuel pump is ok and recommended replacing the fuel pressure regulator. I did but that but it did not solve it. I suppose I should check the fuel pressure. 2000 Silverado 5.3L ...
View 1 RepliesMy left headlight has been going off periodically, so to confirm that it's the bulb, tonight I switched the bulbs from left to right/right to left.
The job went very smoothly. It took me about 20 minutes, but I took my time. I buttoned everything back up and turned on the lights. Both sides came on, but I immediately noticed a very loud buzzing/whining sound coming from both headlamps. It is very loud and I know I would have noticed it before at some point over the course of the last three years that I've owned the car. Obviously, this is not normal, but I can't for the life of me figure out what I could have done wrong, if anything.
"93 Subaru legacy 175,000 miles: Just picked it up yesterday after timing belt/water pump replacement. Now it makes a high pitched whining noise sounds like from engine, the mechanic called it a whistle, but it ain't no whistle and wasn't there before.
View 3 RepliesThis might just be car engine in general regardless of make or model, but upon a cold start, my GTI engine whines or buzzes for approximately 1 second before it stops. I had a 2009 Toyota Corolla that also did this, but I had it fixed with a TSB due to the oil not reaching the VVT-I gears or something in time. It's not the same noise in my GTI, but I was wondering about same sound almost every time upon a cold start?
View 13 RepliesI bought a CPO 2010 Camry LE (2.5 4 cyl, 6 sp auto) a few months ago. The car had around 34K miles when I got it, and ever since then, it has had a high pitched whining noise when accelerating or revving the engine in park. It is noticeable from around 2500RPM up, and seems to be a little louder when the engine is cold.
I have left it at the dealer twice, and both times they have come back and said it is normal. I can't believe this, because I have owned many cars over the years, most of them being fairly dilapidated, yet most of them haven't had a noise like this. I think I have read a comment online somewhere that an issue like this was found due to a bad power steering pump .
After engine is up to temperature the engine has a buzzing/whining sound just at idle. Pick up rpms and its gone. They thought it was comeing from the oil filter and changed the filter and it disappeared for a while but its back again.
Very hard to pinpoint the sound even with a styphiscope. Going back to dealer.
I have this noise, and it has become very annoying as it occurs at the engine midrange rpms.
It is buzzing/howling noise that comes on above 2500-3000rpm, whether it is in gear/underload or in neutral/park. It is noticed most while in sport as it holds lower gears longer.
Electric aux water pump was replaced not so long ago. Have read about the wastegate rattle issue, but im not sure.
Took it to the dealer about two weeks ago for this and the tech said he could not even hear it on the test drive.

I have a 2012 golf R with about 25500 miles. I'm getting this high pitch noise coming from the front of the car. I can only hear it with the windows down. It is intermittent, sometimes doesn't show up sometimes there. Gets louder when I turn right. What am I looking at? Wheel bearing? I'm on coilovers.
View 8 RepliesLast night around 1:00, I was awakened by a noise I think was coming from my car parked below my window. It was plugged in at the time. I heard a loud, high pitched whine, followed by a couple of knocks or thumps, then a sound like R2D2 makes when he turns his head, then a couple more knocks, and another R2D2 noise. I think I may also have seen lights flashing around the the edges of my blackout blinds, but am not sure, since I had just been sound asleep.

View 1 RepliesI have a whining sound coming from somewhere on the left side of my Accent HB SE 2013. 6 months old...it isnt audio related, and is intermittent - sometimes I can hear it, sometimes I cant. It can only be heard above say 40km/hr... and gets higher pitched with speed... lower and whirs out to silence when coming to a stop.
It sounds almost clutch related, but my guess is fuel pump related. A visual inspection shows the belts are fine.... I tried to see if it was hand-brake related by pumping a few times before pulling off... no dice. Now I'm trying to keep fuel above half to see if that has an effect on cooling the pump....
2013 Camry SE; I am experiencing a plastic buzzing noise coming from the left side of the steering wheel, the noise seems to be coming from the small compartment area (below the AC vent). If I press my hand against it, then the noise stops.

View 5 RepliesI am experiencing a buzzing rattle coming from the left corner of the dashboard in the area near the horizontal speaker. It's not loud but it's annoying. It only happens when the car is moving. It doesnt seem to be affected by the audio system being powered on or off. The best thing I can think of to describe it the sound a Geiger counter makes, but not as loud.
