2005 Ford Taurus 3.0 engine. Only at idle has a popping noise out of throttle body. Found lots of people with same problem but no fixes.
I did find out noise goes away when unhook alternator wire and comes back when reattach. Found someone replaced there alternator and that didn't fix it either. I think its electrical?
The problem is intermittent: After turning off the car, there is a clicking noise coming from the needles in the dash. Sometimes the needles click and jump repeatedly; sometimes there is just the clicking noise. To get it to stop, I'll turn the ignition switch several times. At this point, the car seems "dead" but not from the battery. The car actually will not do anything electrically including popping the truck, unlocking, etc. It will not start.
After turning the switch several times, the car would eventually start like nothing was ever wrong with it. I am just guessing that there is something wrong with the switch or something electrical. I also want to think it coincides with something to do with the battery. The problem seems to be worse after checking and seeing that the battery may be low. We have had the alternator checked, we've had the battery itself checked, etc. In addition to driving around with an angry (bad) catalytic converter, this problem, etc, I really would like to send it off of a ravine.
I have a 2005 ford f150 supercab 4x4, and around feb I replaced all the ball joints my self, and now recently when back with the wheels turned turned to the left and then put it in drive and turn the wheels all the way right and give it has to take off there is a popping noise that comes from the driver side front wheel and it just does it once I take off and quit . I've looked and everything and cant see anything that would cause this. And know when I put it in park and it rolls forward I can hear a popping noise that sounds likes it coming from the rear end. I had my rear rebuilt, with new pinion bearing and race, a new axle on the pass side with bearing and the shop told me that it the driver side is questionable on the axle but it has new bearing also, they also told me that it needs a carrier case cause it had groves wore in it where the axle bearings wore out so much. at the time I could afford to have them to replace the carrier case. what would cause the popping from the front end and now the popping in the rear end.
View 1 RepliesHow to check the stabilizer links. 05 Taurus, 4 sedan, 83K miles. Have a distinct noise coming from the front passenger side when going over a bump. Just checked the following and here's what I've found: Checked the ball joint - no play whatsoever, it looks good under the "pry bar" test under the control arm. Tie rod end is tight- no play at all. Strut mounts seem fine. The stabilizer link looks fine - no rust, tears, etc. But I can easily, by hand, twist it freely. However, prying up on the stabilizer bar doesn't seem to show any play on the link itself. Should these be tight (at the joint) to the point where you need some "muscle" to turn them ?? I'm not sure what's left to check.

It always makes this sound when I first start and it is wet outside. After a few minutes the sound stops, presumably after whatever is squealing dries up.
01 taurus pushrod motor. Vulcan? Today it started idling poor/ stalling. I can hear a popping sound from muffler. Almost like a coffee percolator. No codes. Motor seems quiet. No odd noises or metallic sounds. Friend says burnt valve? Last week or so I thought I heard exhaust drone on acceleration. Almost like a hole in muffler. But muffler is good, same as exhaust pipes. The perc sound is not rhythmic. Sort of uneven. Like a chugging/ puffing sound. Intake manifold leak? Upper/lower? This year does not have IMT. Intake tuner device?
View 4 RepliesI have a 2000 Ford Taurus V6 DOHC w/170K miles. When engine heats up, oil pressure light comes on, but only when RPM fall below 1500 or at idle. There is a burnt smell sometimes after driving the car. I do not see froth or coolant in the oil. Car burns a little oil, but no more than it has been for the last 50K miles. Just had oil and filter changed 300 miles ago; I was using 10W-30 but I believe the mechanic used 5W-30. (Also, if I drive more than 45 minutes, the "low coolant" light comes on-- however, the engine is not overheating, and the radiator/reservoir are full.) What part(s) I should order first? Oil pressure sensor? Oil pump? (If at all possible, I need to repair myself, as I simply cannot afford my mechanic's hourly rates right now.)
View 7 RepliesMy 01 Excursion Limited 6.8L 2wd is having what I think is a tranny/shifting issue? Mileage is about 160K. She has been doing just fine and no recent work or out of the ordinary maintenance/replacements..
Got in her this morning to go and noticed that the tranny seemed different. First thing I noticed was that the shift form 1 to 2 was long in coming and then sort of hard / thump when it did change. Then is seems to rev higher in the rpm range than normal when going into 3rd maybe 4th.? I pulled over into a parking lot, turned it off and did a brief inspection of the underside, fluid, etc.. and did not find anything strange. Started her back up and went to leave when I heard a popping / thumping noise from the tranny. Threw it in neutral and reved the motor to see what it sounded like and it was good. Back in drive again and the noise was there. Seemed to go away after getting up to say 45/50mph but the shifts were still off. Took her back home and now trying to decide whats first on diagnosing this issue?
Alright, so about a month ago I was driving when I heard a terrible noise sounded like a pop can stuck between a bike tire coming from the front end. I figured this was the dreaded noise most folks hear when the 4wd system isn't getting enough vacuum.
It did this for about two days, even after replacing the IWE solenoid, then it just stopped and I haven't heard it since. Me being on the cautious side, I'm a bit worried. I haven't jacked the truck up, but I did (brace yourself) lay under it while my buddy drove slowly over, there was no unusual movement.
Question is, if I had to replace anything, what exactly would it be and how much am I looking at? My warranty will be up in about a month or so and Ford has been less than spectacular with repairs thus far so I'd like to go ahead and fix it myself
I noticed my serpentine belt started squeaking about 3 days ago. And yesterday as I was driving to work I heard a clicking sound coming from the left side of the hood, then my car started to gradually shut down and white smoke was coming from the engine. When I got to the stoplight it completely turned off, but I was able to turn it back on again to turn into the parking lot before it shut off again. When I checked it there were no visible leaks, my reservoir for my coolant was still full, and my meter never went up indicating that my car was over heating. I'm not sure what's wrong with it, but after it sits for awhile it is able to turn back on again for a while.

View 10 Replies2000 Excursion V10 4x4. I'm getting a popping noise coming from the rear end when I apply the brakes and come to a complete stop and when I release the brakes to take off. It only happens the moment it comes to a complete stop and the moment it takes off. Not when I'm putting it in forward or reverse or accelerating or decelerating. U joints are fine. I was laying under the truck poking around the other day and when I roll it back and forth in park the few inches it'll go, when it comes to the end of it's travel the axle wraps a little and it seems like the transfer case output shaft flange is moving in and out of the transfer case and causing the noise. I'm assuming there is a snap ring holding the output bearing in place. I didn't have time to drop the driveshaft but am planning on it this weekend to see if it still does it when I roll it and to inspect the transfer case. I need to check to make sure the driveshaft splines are not seized up but they seem to have a little free play to them.
View 2 RepliesGot a 1999 ford f150 2 wheel drive. I have replaced both upper and lower control arms with ball joints on both sides. New shocks, new stablelizer links, new inner and outer tie rod ends. Also, a new steering gear and i still have popping noise coming from both sides around the wheel area when i enter or leave out of drive ways, turning, or running in a hole. Doesn't do in going straight. I don't know what else to do. Driving me insane. I keep spending money on this truck and still where i first started.
View 9 RepliesMy mom was driving to pick me up and she said that all of a sudden about half way here that the car started making a knocking sound and white smoke started coming from hood, the car was also trying to shut itself down while she was trying to pull over. It is a 2000 ford taurus with like 130k. I am so scared that it is the head gasket because my mom, myself and my daughter, and my 16 year old sister all share that car to get around. Is there anything else it could be besides that or is that probably what it is?
View 19 RepliesOn my 2005 with 234k miles on it the engine has a bit of a piston slap. Its not severe but the noise is there and I have been trying a few different 5w30 oils to try and quiet the noise a bit. I have found some better than others but since its time for an oil change again I am considering bumping up in viscosity and giving a 40 weight oil a try to see if a little heavier oil might work for it out a bit.
View 15 RepliesI have a 2007 Camry LE, with about 104,000 miles on it. Lately I've noticed a noise ONLY when the car is idling, rather in park or drive. I don't hear it all when I'm driving. It's somewhat hard for me to tell if it's coming from the engine or under the car, but its definitely near the front and sounds lower in the body. My first instinct told me that it was related to the exhaust system, but it doesn't quite sound like a rattle. It sounds closer to a belt struggling to turn...it actually sounds a little bit like when my water pump and alternator went, but I had those replaced 15 months ago so I really don't think it's that at all. I also had the radiator replaced 2 months back, so I don't think it's that. I don't know drive far to work, so I haven't put a lot of miles on the car in the last year.
Otherwise the car drives normally, just hear this sound at idle. The only other thing I've noticed over time is that when the car gets to about 2500-3000 miles after an oil change, I notice the light flashes when making hard turns..but that's it, and it goes away when I get the oil changed. Obviously I know that the engine is burning oil probably faster than it should, but I'm not sure if that might somehow be related to what I'm hearing above.
My 2013 sonata gls is only 2 months old and I am hearing a pinging or more like a pop noise coming from my engine about every 15 sec when in idle, what it could be?
View 2 RepliesWe have a 2004 Passat V6, and we've noticed at idle, the engine makes 5 or six fast ticks, stops, then goes again, over and over. I tried searching but didn't find anything relevant.
Also, sometime when the AC is on, all of a sudden the air stops coming out, but the blower still roars, then a couple seconds later the air comes rushing out of the vents again.
I can't figure out what this popping noise is that is coming from under the car (towards the back, not from engine). Its infrequent and I only notice it at idle. If I had to guess it would be exhaust related, but that still doesn't sound right. What could it be? See the video below for the sound I am talking about.
View 2 RepliesI just purchased an 06 passat 2.0t with 59,000 miles on it. It has the 2 yr /24k mile warranty I've had it about a week.
Today I noticed something odd. The car is in motion, in an overdrive gear, idling (about 1500 rpm). When I push the accelerator lightly, I feel a very faint "pop" or "click" in both feet on the floorboard and can hear a faint click noise as the RPM increases. This happens at any speed, but is more noticable at higher speeds. Again, it is still hardly noticeable at all.
What concerns me is that it is a repeatable condition. Is this something I should worry about now or perhaps wait and see how it develops before worrying about it? It should be noted that there is no gear change when this happens.
I have a 2005 mk4 Gli 1.8T with 69,000 miles. This ticking sound that I hear from the inside of my car is coming from the right side of the engine bay. It starts during idle. It starts ticking and gets a little faster and then stops for a few seconds then begins again. It fully stops while driving. I changed tensioner, belt, serpentine belt, water pump, and oil change with mobile 1 synthetic 0w-40.
